Buenos Aires, 16 de septiembre (Télam).- La diputada María Elena Naddeo presentó a la Legislatura porteña un pedido de informes al Ejecutivo por el recorte de viandas los días sábados a los chicos de la Orquesta Infantil y Juvenil de Villa Lugano.
Coincidentemente, la Cooperadora de la Orquesta Infantil de Villa Lugano denuncia la suspensión del subsidio de todo 2012 sin comunicación alguna del Ministerio de Educación.
La subsecretaría correspondiente está a cargo de Soledad Acuña, quien ya suprimiera viandas a Puentes Escolares en el inicio del ciclo lectivo 2012, indicó el comunicado de la legisladora.
"El derecho de los niños, niñas y adolescentes a una educación de calidad, máxime en una propuesta como la que constituye el objeto del presente pedido de informes, no puede ser obstaculizado por supuestas fallas en la comunicación entre funcionarios y la comunidad educativa", expresó Naddeo, presidenta de la Comisión Mujer, Infancia, Adolescencia y Juventud de la Legislatura.
Añadió que de confirmarse la denuncia efectuada por docentes y padres inserta en este pedido de informes "solicitaremos expresamente el restablecimiento inmediato de los subsidios y de las viandas para los chicos". (Télam).-

La Sole esta encantada con el programa de Canal 7, que este año agrego entrevistas a musicos consagrados. Destaca que el formato de Telefe “no se banca la pelea ni la confrontacion” y dice que trabajar en una emisora publica no la define politicamente: “Trato de no opinar porque en mi lugar se corren mas riesgos y lo que yo hago es lo mas puro que hay; cantarle a la gente”.

Nunca imaginé que iba a llegar a hacer cinco temporadas consecutivas de Ecos de mi Tierra. Ni loca que estuviese pensé que el ciclo iba a ir tan lejos. Pero ahora estoy muy orgullosa del producto que estamos haciendo. Es un proyecto que con el paso de los años ha ido creciendo y madurando. Estoy recontenta de cómo están saliendo las cosas. Es una propuesta interesante, de música y de charla”, dispara de entrada Soledad Pastorutti, quien volvió a la pantalla de la Televisión Pública para presentar un renovado Ecos... con toda la fuerza de la música en vivo y la calidez de un encuentro íntimo con los músicos más destacados de todo el país.

“La música del país crece día a día y Ecos... también”, informa la gacetilla del programa conducido por la Sole y con la co-conducción de Marcelo Iribarne, en la quinta temporada de este espacio, ahora con nuevo día y horario, los sábados de 21.30 a 23.

“Cada semana, un invitado especial está en el living del programa para compartir con Soledad un encuentro de amigos músicos en el que no falta la interpretación de clásicos del folklore, un repaso musical de la trayectoria del visitante y las anécdotas que le dan cuerpo a la historia de la música del país. El invitado especial está además a cargo del minirrecital del cierre del programa. Y como es habitual, cada sábado el ciclo presentará durante una hora, tocando en vivo, a los jóvenes artistas de todos los géneros que cada vez suman más reconocimiento en todas las regiones, nuevos talentos que buscan ganarse un lugar y a artistas de comunidades originarias que, en conjunto, hacen crecer la heterogénea expresión cultural nacional”, agrega. En el primer envío, Jorge Rojas conversó con la Sole en su living, interpretando canciones juntos.

Con respecto a la actualidad de la música popular argentina, sostiene que “el folklore tiene la capacidad de ser fuerte siempre. Esto se ve claramente en los festivales del interior del país, que siguen congregando a mucha gente. Los festivales son netamente familiares: va toda la familia con el equipo de mate. Los festivales siguen pasando un muy buen momento, independientemente de los artistas que cantan en esos festivales. El tema que está difícil es el de la difusión. Después de la gran difusión que hubo en los ‘90 del folklore, ahora no hay tantas radios que difundan nuestra música. Tampoco han surgido figuras nuevas. A Abel Pintos no lo considero una figura nueva, porque ya es un artista consagrado. Es como que ahora tenés que ser un poco más pillo para ver la veta de cómo difundir tu música, fundamentalmente por Internet”.

A propósito de su participación como integrante del jurado del exitoso ciclo musical La Voz Argentina (los domingos a la noche por Telefé), afirma que “antes de empezar mi único miedo era si iban a cambiar el formato del programa y afortunadamente esto no sucedió. Obviamente se trata de una selección muy subjetiva, que no siempre va a coincidir con el gusto del público televidente. El programa está muy bien y es un suceso más allá de quienes estemos en el jurado. Con otro jurado, La Voz... igualmente sería un éxito. Se trata de un reality y la producción que trabaja es muy seria. El formato no se banca la pelea ni la confrontación”.

Sobre el episodio que la involucró cuando se dijo tras la primera emisión que conocía a uno de los participantes, expresó: “Eso es parte de la tele tras algo que es un éxito. Yo no lo conocía al participante como se dijo. Igualmente se aclaró que la mayoría de los intervinientes son profesionales, que algunos de ellos ya han grabado hasta discos. Aunque probablemente a algunos de los participantes ya los conozcamos”.

Mientras prepara el show que ofrecerá el próximo 3 de noviembre en el teatro Gran Rex de la calle Corrientes, con su espectáculo Canciones a la Carta, con el cual ya hizo gira por el interior del país, interpretando los temas que le pide el público, opina que “el hecho de estar trabajando en la Televisión Pública no me identifica políticamente. Yo no hablo de política. No sólo he trabajado con este gobierno sino con todos. Lo que hago es muy simple, voy y le canto a la gente. Yo hablo de música y de folklore. Cada uno tiene la libertad de expresarse como quiere y como más le gusta. Por lo general trato de no opinar políticamente. En mi lugar se corre mucho más riesgo y lo que yo hago, es lo más puro que hay”.

Mendoza, 10 de septiembre (Télam).- El Movimiento Independiente de Músicos Mendocinos (MIMM) ofrecerá un nuevo concierto el próximo jueves en el emblemático teatro "Independencia" de la capital provincial, informó el Ministerio de Cultura local.
El MIMM agrupa a un número considerable de nuevos artistas regionales de género variado y en el concierto del jueves a la noche actuarán las agrupaciones musicales "Fadangos" que desde hace tres años interpretan canciones rioplatenses y portuguesas (fados, tangos, mornas y cedinhos) y "Escolazo", trío que ofrece tangos del siglo pasado y composiciones recientes.
A ellos se agregará por primera vez el músico cubano radicado en esta capital Rafael Quevedo que presentará temas clásicos de la trova de su país y canciones de su autoría.
Integran "Escolazo Tango" los músicos Alejandro Sicardi en voz, Rubén Carrión en guitarra eléctrica y Leonardo Martínez en guitarrón.
"Fadangos" cultiva un amplio repertorio con Mario Galván en piano, Víctor Silione en violín, Federico Gil en guitarra y con Patricia Slukich (periodista) en voz.
Para el acceso al Independencia el Ministerio de Cultura local dispuso que las entradas se canjean por un paquete de alimento no perecedero que están destinados a comedores comunitarios. (Télam)

Repudio Agresión Física y con Arma Blanca

El día miércoles 29 de Agosto cerca de las 12hs el músico Emanuel Bonaccorso fue apretado por 4 civiles que lo patotearon y le dijeron “no somos de la federal, ni de la metropolitana ni de espacios públicos sino te vas te rompemos todo y no ves más los instrumentos” en las inmediaciones de la calle Florida, casi esquina Perón, donde se preparaba para realizar su show. Este espectáculo lo realiza desde hace años en ese espacio público que comparte con otros artistas.

Recién acusábamos el golpe y nos proponíamos definir qué acciones seguir ante este repudiable hecho, cuando el día viernes 30 de Agosto cerca de las 11hs el grupo de tango El Método se proponía dar su show en florida casi esquina perón volvieron a presentarse los 4 matones. Los compañeros del grupo Jamaicaderos que estaban por tocar en otra parte de la peatonal se enteraron y se acercaron al lugar para apoyar. La discusión con los matones subió de tono, empezaron a empujar y a tirar algunos golpes y en ese momento uno de los 4 saco un arma blanca con la que intento por más de 10 minutos agredirnos. Esto sucedía impunemente en plena peatonal, en hora pico y con la no presencia policial. Este último hecho a nuestro entender y sabiendo cómo se maneja la federal en la peatonal fue una clara liberación de zona que demuestra la connivencia de la federal con estos mafiosos.

Por suerte y gracias a los transeúntes que se solidarizaron con la agresión recibida pudimos detener al cuchillero, que se escondía tranquilamente en uno de los locales con otro de los matones (este último no fue detenido porque la policía lo soltó inmediatamente).

Por lo que averiguamos este individuo manejaría todas las mafias que se van sucediendo en la calle florida y seria el nexo entre la calle y la federal. Antiguamente habría sido el que cobraba a los manteros por trabajar. También sospechamos que habría connivencia con comerciantes que no quieren que haya vendedores ni músicos en la peatonal.

Desde hace 4 años un grupo de músicos nos organizamos para cambiar la realidad de la ciudad y que esta sea un ejemplo de cultura y de libre expresión. Fuimos por el camino lento, el legal. Nos sentamos con legisladores, abogados, otras agrupaciones de músicos, investigamos jurisprudencia internacional, de todo. En el camino tuvimos que soportar los malos tratos de la federal, amenazas, golpes, fracturas, detenciones, causas armadas, quita de instrumentos, días y días sin poder laburar, contravenciones por ruidos molestos sin control de decibeles (¿la música es un ruido?) y también operativos surrealistas ordenados por fiscales amigos de vecinos y comerciantes con poder. Todo esto soportado por nuestras familias, el tocar en la calle es un ingreso digno para el músico y a veces el único que tenemos. A pesar de todo esto continuamos con la convicción de que teníamos que luchar por un cambio. Y hoy en el 2012 gracias al apoyo de legisladores, abogados y organizaciones pudimos empezar a cambiar esa realidad. A darle un marco legal a nuestra actividad, a tener una protección del estado.

Al verse trabados en sus reclamos los comerciantes, los policías corruptos y demás hacedores de las cajas de dinero de la calle han tomado la triste decisión de usar a estos barras cobardes para atacar a los músicos.

Pedimos difundir esta información.

También les pedimos a todos y todas los que alguna vez escucharon a cualquier músico en la calle estén en los días que vienen acompañado a los músicos para que no estemos solos en esta avanzada violenta contra el arte.

El 9no. Encuentro de Músicos Populares, una cita de formación y arte que se desarrolla en Rosario desde 2004, sumó desde anoche el inicio de sus conciertos con la presentación de la Orquesta de Música Argentina Juan de Dios Filiberto dirigida por Atilio Stampone y el grupo Anacrusa, en un recital gratuito en el teatro La Comedia.

En esa misma sala, esta noche se reunirán Raúl Barboza, Lars Nielsen, Susana Ratcliff, Ernesto Méndez y el cuarteto vocal local Karé, mientras que el viernes en el auditorio Príncipe de Asturias del Parque España actuarán Tamvos y los dúos Verónica Condomí-Liliana Vitale, Luciana Jury-Moscardini y Guillermo Risotto-Pablo Giménez.

La serie de actuaciones se mudarán luego a la sala Lavardén donde el sábado confluirán la panameña Patricia Vlieg, Mateo Villalba, Melania Pérez y la muestra de los dos únicos talleres que se repiten: el de ensamble instrumental dirigido por Lilián Saba y el de ensamble vocal a cargo de Fernando Carmona.

El domingo, en el cierre, se presentarán Grupo Vocal Argentino, Vitillo Abalos, Marcelo Dellamea y los dúos Iván Tarabelli-Silvana Grosso y Ñandutí.

El guitarrista Marcelo Stenta, uno de los impulsores de estas jornadas, destacó a Télam que este año tenemos cerca de 600 inscriptos y es una verdadera fiesta entre los músicos consagrados que vienen a mostrar lo que saben y los jóvenes que se acercan a la ciudad.

Este año, además de los talleres de Saba y Carmona, hay otros 13 espacios de formación que son Construcción y mantenimiento de guitarras contemporáneas por Esteban González; Danzas por Diego García y María Inés Vitanzi; Letras por Teuco Castilla; Flauta por Lars Nilsson; y Música litoraleña por Raúl Barboza También hay de Percusión, por Facundo Guevara; Canto e interpretación, por Ethel Koffman y Marcela Fernández; Bajo por Nardo González; Ensamble rioplatense por Nora Sarmoria; Orquestación por Guillo Espel; Guitarra por Rodolfo Gorosito; Canto por Chany Suárez; y Aerófonos por Matías Marcipar.

Entre lo que se genera en los talleres y en los recitales sentimos que tenemos un público cautivo de un espíritu que no tiene nada de comercial ya que los participantes perciben un cachet mínimo y nosotros, como organizadores, no cobramos un peso, apuntó Stenta.

El guitarrista que desde hace siete años toca junto al trovador Jorge Fandermole, es, junto a Raúl Rey, Myriam Cubelos, Juancho Perone, Lucrecia Cartabia, Paola Murias, Laura Mussi y Mario Bernachea, entre otros, parte del colectivo que impulsa este encuentro.

La idea primigenia que nos impulsó -repasó Marcelo- fue difundir la música de raíz folclórica dándole espacio a los artistas que no tienen el lugar que se merecen y por suerte pudimos mantener el criterio estético con el que comenzamos.

Al margen de esta fiesta melómana declarada de Interés Municipal por el Consejo Municipal de Rosario, de Interés Provincial por la Cámara de Diputados de la provincia de Santa Fe y de Interés Nacional por el Senado de la Nación, sumó para esta edición una declaración de interés cultural de parte de la Secretaría de Cultura de la Nación, Stenta repasó su presente artístico.

Mientras prepara su actuación junto a Jorge Fandermole y Fernando Silva, el 8 de septiembre en el SHA de Buenos Aires, y toma parte en el registro de un álbum doble del cantautor, contó que participará de la sede rosarina del festival Guitarras del Mundo.

También este año -adelantó- quiero hacer un disco de carácter folclórico con composiciones mías y con invitados como Raúl Carnota, Carlos Aguirre, Franco Luciani, Juancho Perone, Myriam Cubelos y Carlos Pino.

Con mucho p?blico se llev? a cabo la segunda pe?a de la AMSLa Asociación de Musicos Salliquelenses organizó un nuevo encuentro en el salón de fiestas del club Jorge Newbery. Gran cantidad de artistas redondearon un buen espectáculo con mucha participación del público presente. Como casi siempre, además de ser el locutor oficial, fue Juan Jauregui el que rompió el hielo de la noche pasando por varios estilos autóctonos, con zambas, chacareras y hasta un tango.Hizo una presentación Federico Ramos asombrando con dos instrumentales a guitarra criolla con una impecable interpretación hasta que estuvieron listos los del próximo número.Y no se bajó del escenario porque acompañó con Sergio Volpe, Gepy y su bombo personalizado y Tello, al cantante Marcelo Di Piano.Ezequiel Mesa fue quien le siguió en primera voz y al igual que su antecesor, les costó bajar del escenario porque la gente les pedía otra.El multi instrumentista Carlos Carrera tocó y cantó excelente como siempre y no quiso extenderse para dar lugar a los próximos artistas.Sin hacer esperar al público subió al escenario el Kupay Dúo de Tres Lomas, ya muy reconocido en la zona. Orlando Moro y Analía Lapasset demuestran excelencia y además de gustar hicieron participar al público, cantando y bailando.Antes del número principal, subieron Gastón De Jesús y Santiago Vaquero, que encendieron al público, los hicieron cantar y aunque pensaban hacer sólo dos canciones, porque ni guitarra habían traído, revisaron todo su repertorio a pedido de la gente y dejaron a esas dos guitarras prestadas sacando humo sobre el escenario.Desde Santa Rosa llegaron frescos "Los Caballos Cansados". A tres voces, con tres guitarras y bombo deleitaron a los presentes con su repertorio folklórico.Tampoco les fue fácil bajarse del escenario porque la gente quería más y aunque ya pasaban de la una y media de la madrugada volvieron a enchufar las guitarras para saciar las ganas de música del público.Ya todo lo preparado se había presentado y la gente no se movía de sus lugares, por lo que volvieron a subir los artistas de Tres Lomas y la noche se estiró.Y como no podía ser de otra manera, el asado final para los músicos.Gracias como siempre, a la gente que asiste a los eventos que organiza la AMS que crece día a día con más músicos y aficionados que se incorporan.Gracias a los chicos de las bandas de rock que esta vez, aunque no les tocaba el escenario ayudaron a atender a la gente y se logró que todos se fuesen satisfechos con el show.(Crónica extraída de http://msalliquelo.blogspot.com.ar) Las notas más leídas de la semana:

"El acto de compartir hace que la música crezca, que sea otra, que cada cosa sea dicha de otro modo y mirada desde otro ángulo", aseguró Zabala, cultora de un lenguaje que atraviesa el folclore, el jazz, el tango y la música brasileña.

La autora ofrecerá tres conciertos en el CAFF (Sánchez de Bustamante 764), los domingos 16, 23 y 30 de septiembre desde las 21 y oficiará como bastonera entre diferentes artistas invitados: Juan Falú, María Volonté, Yusa, Georgina Hassan, trío Aymama, Raúl Carnota, Carlos Aguirre, "Mono" Fontana, Gabo Ferro y Franco Luciani.

"La idea básica es compartir desde el arreglo y desde la improvisación con todas las posibles formaciones que ese grupo de invitados pueda ofrecer", anticipó Zabala.

"La clave -agregó- será la espontaneidad y la diversión, tenemos la expectativa de que el público se sume a ese código".

No se tratará de encuentros fugaces en el escenario sino que la guitarrista escribirá arreglos para cada uno de los músicos invitados al ciclo.

"De acuerdo al invitado del momento se armará y rearmará el repertorio. Ellos participarán activamente en mis músicas, en especial en las de mi último disco ("Presente infinito", 2011), y luego tendrán un espacio para las suyas, donde también haré un aporte. Habrá mucho campo para la improvisación", dijo.

Esa propuesta, además de la tímbrica que sume cada invitado, tendrá el soporte instrumental de una formación integrada por Eliana Liuni (vientos), Mariano Martos (bajo fretless -sin trastes-) y Mario Gusso (percusión).

Además de las composiciones de cada artista, el repertorio común incluirá obras de autores como Atahualpa Yupanqui, Pascual Contursi, Gustavo Leguizamón o Luis Alberto Spinetta.En el desafío de interpretar de modo personal las obras ya consagradas, Zabala señaló que el objetivo "es trabajar de modo tal que el músico logre apropiarse de esas melodías".

"Yo no me preocupo mucho por si los recursos que utilizo son o no copiados; sí me preocupa que respeten un estilo y que su uso sea genuino", apuntó.

"En Aguaribay (2009), mi primer disco -agregó-, incluí varias obras consagradas pero fue una incorporación natural. Me encontré cantando y haciendo cosas a través de esas obras y de a poco fueron surgiendo los arreglos", explicó.

En aquella obra Zabala incluyó versiones propias de "Los ejes de mi carreta" (Yupanqui), "Gricel" (Mores-Contursi), "Chacarera de un triste" (Hermanos Simón) y "Zamba para la viuda" (Leguizamón-Pérez), entre otros.

La guitarrista incluirá en el CAFF obras de su próximo disco -ya grabado y que aparecerá en 2013-, con creaciones inéditas para guitarra de la compositora chilena Violeta Parra.

"Lo llamativo es que se trata de obras especialmente escritas para guitarra sola y que fueron creadas poco antes de que Violeta se suicidara", reveló.

Ya tenemos a otro hetero padre de familia de nuestra parte. Norman Quentin Cook, más conocido como Fatboy Slim se ha posicionado muy a favor del matrimonio igualitario en el Reino Unido. Con una actitud bastante clara, el DJ, músico y productor afirma que hay que apoyar el matrimonio igualitario sin pensarlo dos veces.

Uno de los musicos que participase en la ceremonia de clausura de los Juegos Olímpicos londinenses afirma que habla abiertamente con su hijo de 11 años del tema del matrimonio entre personas del mismo sexo. Una vez más, los niños demuestran lo sencillo de la vida. El hijo de Fatboy Slim le preguntaba asombrado porqué alguien iba a tener un problema con que dos personas del mismo sexo se casasen.

Los hay que tienen mucho que aprender de los niños. Y los hay que tienen que aprender a dar la cara y posicionarse, como Fatboy Slim.

Devinci Dixon RC review

The impeccably engineered French Canadian builders Devinci have created a superb mix of state-of-the-art hard-riding balance and bombproof long-term strength with their Dixon aggro trail bike.

Ride & handling: Super strong on the trails, if heavy on the climbs

Haven supply a shock-volume reducing shim with the bike, which allows you to create a more progressive spring rate by unscrewing the air can and clipping the shim onto the damper shaft.

The spacer addition isn’t a cut and dried choice. Full volume means more bounce and occasional wallow when you get caught deep in the stroke, but bottom-out is never harsh. The bike swallows square-edged slaps like sweets, and more sag means a lower centre of gravity for extra stability.

Adding the shim definitely gives a firmer feel through your feet if you’re pushing hard through berms, but it’s more abrupt off big stuff. It still manages to drive forward through rock heaps and step downs as though it’s self-pumping.

Whether you stay with the stock XV air can or stick the shim in to make knocking the travel indicator less likely, the initial travel is remarkably smooth. Part of this is due to the plush initial stroke of the Split Pivot design. The smooth and easy-free movement of the perfectly aligned bearings (very noticeable if you take the shock out) makes a massive difference, letting the bike glide over small rocks, stutter bumps or roots without skipping a beat or losing traction.

Add the impressive braking and pedal stroke isolation plus decent ground clearance and the Dixon delivers unerring propulsion whatever’s underneath your wheels. That easy initial movement means you’ll be glad of the shock firming ProPedal lever when you’re grunting up a long, smooth climb though.

The extra beef also makes it less playful to hop and flick about at lower speeds. Get some momentum behind you and the surefooted ground connection and beautifully balanced handling is inspiring. The cockpit dimensions are just right, and while the mid-height BB means it’s not an absolute cornering scythe, it’s clearance means you can get on the power earlier.

Add in that fluid suspension and it also means you can drive it low through rooty, rocky or rutted ‘natural’ corners without pole vaulting off a stubbed pedal. Even on groomed trail centres you can still leave the brakes off, lean in hard and look for the exit very aggressively – as far as the Kendas let you, in fact.

Having done several runs with our test Fox 34 fork in place of the 32s, we can also confirm it’s more than stiff enough to team up with a tougher fork. You really don’t want to raise the bottom bracket much higher than it is, though.

Frame & equipment: Functional but heavy

Devinci have stayed resolutely homegrown. No containers of Far Eastern bikes unboxed, stickered up and bolted together for this company – they go for billet alloy and raw tube stock going in, and finished bikes rolling out the other end, giving them total quality control.

The Optimum G04 tubeset is triple butted and pressure-formed into curved, box and convex-sided rhomboid tubing to match the loads in each frame section. Convex rectangular section rear stays get cleanly machined, open-ended terminals and an asymmetric junction behind the relatively high main pivot.

The bearing seats in the mainframe, the rear pivot and the rocker linkage are all final-stage machined once the frame’s been heat treated and assembled. It’s more awkward than machining each piece before putting it together and hoping it stays straight during welding and age hardening, but it means the tolerances in bearing alignment are far more accurate than on most bikes. This translates into a noticeably smooth and easy suspension movement, plus better bearing and shock bushing life.

Switchable ‘Full Response Geometry’ chucks for the rocker link pivots let you slacken the head and seat angle half a degree and drop bottom bracket and standover height 7mm.

Devinci have hooked up with renowned suspension engineer Dave Weagle to use his Split Pivot design. This joins the chainstay and seatstays at a concentric pivot around the outside of the 142x12mm bolt-thru rear axle. A rocker link then drives the vertically mounted Fox RP2 shock.

There are chainguide mounts around the BB and mounts for a remote hose/cable for a dropper post under the top tube. There’s a bottle cage mount on the down tube and the rear brake is post-mount-style for easy alignment.

Tyre clearance is adequate for a 2.35in tyre in filthy weather or a 2.4in in the dry. It’s not the lightest frame in the 145mm category at 3.17kg (7lb) with shock, but the lifetime warranty shows Devinci are confident they’re more than strong enough. One niggle is the noise from the guide-free gear cable as it clatters around inside the chainstay.

While everything works fine, the frame quality and Canadian origin mean component levels on the complete Dixon RC are par with a mainstream bike several hundred pounds cheaper. The hefty frame and bombproof wheels also mean a chunky overall weight, although adding £250 worth of RockShox Reverb dropper post and a titanium seat collar for £205 is still tempting. It would add another pound or so, but allow you to easily get more from the bike.

There was a definite divide between testers on whether they preferred the shock spaced or full volume with slightly higher pressure, but everyone agreed on the Dixon’s awesome overall balance and performance. If you don’t mind a bit of effort on the climbs to give yourself a big advantage in terms of traction and control on the descents – plus superb hand-built strength – then the Dixon really has to be on your shortlist.

Mountain bikers looking for the technical advantages of a dropper postwithout the price tag of one of the higher-end options now have a budget option from KS.

The new eTen seatpost offers 100mm ofdrop via air sprung and hydraulically locked internals similar to the company'sflagship LEV seatposts.

However, whereas the LEV has its guts built directly into the aluminumstanchion, the eTen uses a separate sealed steel cartridge for easiermanufacturing. Also, the eTen uses a more basic microadjustable single-boltseatpost head, as opposed to the LEV's twin-bolt setup.

Not surprisingly, the eTen is also quite a bit heavier at 643-723gdepending on size. But on the upside it's also quite inexpensive. The cableactuated remote version is just US$175, while the manual variant is cheaperstill at only US$150.

The KS LEV continues to be an appealing option for 2013

Simon Richardson MBE lit the final paralympic cauldron outside City Hall in Cardiff on Monday. It was part of a series of flamecelebrations that have happened around the UK in the lead up to the 2012 Paralympic Games.

"I was so proudto light the cauldron and get nominated to do it because there are so many morepeople more worthy than me," Simon told BikeRadar. "I got specified by John Morgan and the team atDisability Sports Wales to do that. I'd just like to thankfriends such a Magnus Backstedt and his family and my family and the manypeople who just turned up out of nowhere in the pouring rain for being part ofthe special day.”

The multi-Paralympic medalist's ownpreparations for London 2012 were dashed when he was knocked off his bike andleft for dead during an early morning training session just over a year ago by drunk and partially sighted farmer Edward Howell Adams, driving a van onthe A48 near Bridgend.

Talking about the court case which comes toa conclusion with sentencing for Adams this Thursday, he said: “It will be nice to getfull closure from the accident. Whatever happens, happens to him but the CPS haspushed hard so a precedent will hopefully be set so that drunk driving withadverse outcomes like this now automatically becomes dangerous driving.Hopefully my misfortune has helped the roads be slightly safer and to makeprocedure slightly easier for those involved in future incidents.”

“I would have loved tohave been there in London to compete but now I'm setting my goals on Rio," said a determined Richardson. "Ihave a really good team behind me and I'm looking forward to the (back)operation in mid-to-late September.” Whether he will be on a two wheeled bikeor in a hand-cycle remains to be seen as the procedure he will undergo willlikely reduce his ability to bend his spine.

Tue 28 Aug 2012, 12:00 pm BSTBy Cycling PlusThis is similar in style to the top-end Dura-Ace, and though there are performance and weight differences, it’s hardly detectable out on the road. Shifting isn’t quite as smooth or quick, but other than that there’s little between them – why pay the extra £200, you might ask.

Well, the pedal threads on the cranks were slightly oversized – several pedals showed a slight wobble in the thread just before final tightening – and though this isn’t a huge problem short term, we’d question their long-term life if you swap pedals a lot.

Considering the price and performance, though, it’s hard to find anything better.
