Gingham Galore ~ Two Finished Quilts!

As promised, here follows a gingham update together with a warning for another picture heavy post:

It certainly was pedal to the metal this weekend! Thankfully both quilts basted and quilted really easily and without problem, and my sewing machine played nice. The few hiccups encountered along the way were operator error, brought about perhaps by lack of sleep. Self-inflicted.

Gingham Quilt ~ Lime Marmalade

Thank you so much for all of your comments on my previous post featuring the start of these two quilts! I loved reading all of your comments, and have been spurred on by your enthusiasm.

Several readers wondered how well the gingham would fare during the washing and tumble drying process. Upon hearing these concerns I immediately threw all caution to the wind and soaked the finished quilts in a tub, spun the quilts in the washing machine to remove excess water, and then tumble dried on a "crease guard" and "gentle" mode.

Both quilts emerged from the tumble dryer wrinkly and crinkly, but in cozy and comforting way that really suits the style of these quilts! The images seen here are post washing, and I must admit that the crinkle factor has been played down somewhat by the use of a warm steam iron.

There was no color run, or noticeable fading. I am really pleased with how well the gingham, vintage linens and quilting cottons endured this process; so much so that I've been back to Spotlight to stock up on a little more gingham!

I have used a striped fabric to bind both quilts, a black/white stripe and a red/white stripe. And yes, I do still machine bind all of my quilts. I've had A LOT of practise machine stitching the binding. It is a technique that you get better at and becomes effortless over time. I am just about there.

Both quilts have been backed entirely with Little Apples (Round and Round in White Linen) by Aneela Hoey.

The Gingham Phase

Earlier this week I ventured out to my local Spotlight Store (I gather it's much like an US version of a Joann's Store), in search of maybe finding some of the more recently released Denyse Schmidt fabrics.

I did find some DS fabric, but nothing that needed to come home with me. As I made my way out of the store the section of gingham fabric caught my eye ~ 100% cotton, woven fabric in an array of colors that immediately set my head in a spin! Why had I not seen these before?

The team member at the cutting counter eyed me with curiosity even asking what I had in mind. Huh? A quilt, of course!

Since then I have enjoyed the fabric play, auditioning prints, retiring some and calling upon my vintage sheet fabric collection for dainty floral prints that work well with gingham.

I had such a wonderful time creating the first quilt top that a second followed soon after!

We'll call this the gingham phase, and I hope you'll bear with me as I ride out this creative whim.

I am busy working on completing the second quilt. Basting, quilting and binding are yet to commence. More pictures soon.

St Ives ~ A Finished Quilt

I have worked with Lecien fabric collections on numerous occasions and have always found Lecien prints to be a lovely quality fabric with a nice hand; a soft and light touch.

St Ives by Sarah Fielke is no exception and I have enjoyed working with just the Cherry color palette. I have showcased Sarah's prints by keeping the design simple. The alternating solid fabrics used are Robert Kaufman Kona Cotton Solid in White and Ash.

Instead of using cotton batting I have used a product called Quiltlite. Quiltlite is a 100% cotton woven fabric similar to a loosely woven flannel fabric. It is used in the same way as normal batting, sandwiched in between the quilt top and back, and offers a presence of batting without the bulk.

Quiltlite reduces the bulk of the quilt considerably (which makes the task of machine quilting so much less onerous) and means that the quilt is like a thin, light weight blanket, easily folded/stored and therefore very portable. Great also for use in warmer climates!

I have used Aneela Hoey's Puppy Dog Tails in Cherry for the quilt back and a lime green and white stripe (From Little Things) also by Sarah Fielke to bind the quilt. The lime green stripe fabric perfectly matches and highlights the splashes of green in the St Ives prints.

This week's Sunday Stash features recently stashed or re-stashed Japanese prints, some of which are hard to find, rare, or out of print.

This bundle of four Fat Quarters are by Kumiko Fujita (Yuwa). They make a good addition to my growing collection of text prints. I love the clarity of the text, the individual written words, followed by short sentences to show use of that word: House. He lives in a small house.

Next up, another Fat Quarter bundle of Japanese fabric by Yuwa with French text: Je Vous en Prie (You're Welcome!) in black, red, white, green and grey. Some of these prints have already been cut into; they really do coordinate well with the rest of my fabric stash.

Again another Japanese Import ~ Yuwa ~ addition, a Fat Quarter bundle of Daisy Flowers by Suzuko Koseki in Blue, Yellow and Green:

And I may just have been in the right place at the right time to pick up a several fat quarters of the sought after Kerchief Girls by Lecien. These sweet girls have made an appearance in a number of my quilts and I can only hope that Lecien is considering a re-print of this collection in every color of the rainbow ... as well as black, and grey and ... Soon please?

St Ives in Progress

Way back in November last year I was sent a bundle of St Ives by Sarah Fielke for Lecien as featured in Sunday Stash #120. This bundle of fabric has been patiently sitting about awaiting for inspiration to strike.

Since then I've seen some lovely projects made from a variety of these prints but have in particular been taken by the Cherry (red/pink) color palette of the St Ives collection as featured in the free pattern designed by Sarah Fielke for Lecien:

Inspired by Cherry color palette of the St Ives collection I have commenced a new quilt project; something relatively simple so as to feature the colors and the prints.

I think this quilt top needs some interesting quilting to jazz it up, and having just completed two large quilt projects I am really looking forward to quilting this smaller quilt (50 x 50 inches).

Red and Pink ~ just in time for Valentine's Day!

I suspect it is going to be a quilty weekend!

Custom Order Pillow

Yesterday was spent working on a custom order; a repeat of probably one of the sweetest pillows that I've ever made:

A tumbler patchwork pillow cover featuring the all of the cutest prints from Sarah Jane's fabric collection Children at Play for Michael Miller.

It really is very satisfying to make a small project now and again. Even the basting (!!) and the quilting become a joy when the quilt sandwich is not much bigger than a 20 inch square.

For the back of the pillow cover I have again used the Children at Play border print - Parade - and have used a light weight fusible interfacing for stability and durability. Fusible interfacing is easy to use, and with a warm iron it is quickly applied. The interfacing has added body to the back of the pillow without stiffness.

A zip is hidden under the overlapping flap not quite half way down the back of the pillow. The pillow form/insert can therefore be easily removed before washing the pillow cover.

This patchwork pillow cover is ready for shipping and I have a feeling that one lucky little girl will enjoy this pillow very much!

... on Monday? It's Monday morning on my side of the world, but definitely still Sunday over on the other side, so it still counts right?

It's a re-stash this week! This bundle of fabric is the popular Bijoux by Heather Bailey, a collection which was first released several years ago, and became more difficult to source find for a while, until it was released again more recently.

I especially love every single colorway of Mod Beads (pictured above) and have previously used these prints throughout many of my projects. Small scale designs complement larger scale, busy prints and can therefore balance and tone down an otherwise busy project.

These colors and prints suit my fabric stash perfectly. I have split up the bundle and added these fabrics to my arranged by color fabric stash. They've settled in well.

The Labyrinth Quilt and Quilt Pattern!

They say to strike while the iron is hot, and so I did. Just like that a new quilt and quilt pattern has emerged from this week's creative burst! I think it may be something to do with the relaxed holiday mood, but rest assured that is soon to come to an end.

The new quilt and pattern has been called the Labyrinth Quilt Pattern,

a name which requires no further explanation.

I have really enjoyed working with these boldly graphic and colorful prints (especially the larger scale dots and circles) and have been pleasantly surprised by the overall balance of the colors.

Whilst piecing blocks I was itching to introduce several more colors (particularly green!) but showed restrained and kept myself to the bundle of fabrics as gifted.

I have quilted the Labyrinth Quilt with minimal straight lines, although this doesn't represent minimum time and effort. With 48 stitching lines each 65 inches long that would amount to 3120 inches or almost 80 meters of slow stitching and quilt wrangling. I like the numbers thing!

And more stripey binding. This time a grey stripe from Sarah Fielke's fabric collection "From Little Things."

Just a few things that need a mention today.

1. I have received numerous email inquiries regarding the black/white stripe fabric I so often use for quilt binding here at RPQ:

It is certainly no secret and I am happy to share with you that this fabric is a print by the Japanese manufacturer Lecien. The fabric selvedge doesn't provide much more information that just that:

I have lucky to find this stripe fabric at my local fabric store (GJ Discount Fabrics) as well as at times at Purlsoho, or at various Etsy Stores (search Supplies for "lecien stripe"). There are several substitute fabrics including Robert Kaufman Clown Stripe which is a wider stripe but more readily available.

Summer is in full swing in Melbourne and this week's warm weather is keeping me close to home, air conditioner, and sewing machine. Alas, a new quilt is in progress and it is starting to look like it might be another productive week.

Emma from Ballarat Patchwork very kindly and gratuitously sent me a FQ bundle of the same yummy fabrics that were featured as a giveaway earlier this month:

This bundle has been sitting on my cutting table for the last few weeks. Each time I have caught a glimpse of this bundle an imprint was made in my mind, and slowly a quilt design evolved. I have learned to be patient in this process, and trust that a suitable plan, or quilt design, will come to me. Eventually.

This block is based on a traditional Rolling Stone Block, however I have jazzed it up a little by varying the width of some of the components and by reconsidering the traditional fabric placement.

More blocks are being made and a layout is yet to be considered.

Brrr! by Laurie Wisbrun for Robert Kaufman!

When asked if I would like to pre-view Laurie's yet to be released fabric collection Brrr! I had no hesitation in accepting this offer, after all I have previously enjoyed working with Laurie's earlier collections including Urban Circus, Tufted Tweets and Pickups and Pooches.

How fun are these prints? The colors are Wintery and perhaps a little Christmas-ey, and those Polar Bear prints are just plain adorable! The range comes in two distinct colorways, a green (pictured above) and blue palette:

Brrr! by Laurie Wisbrun is due to start shipping in June this year, and what with time passing by so quickly, June will be upon us more quickly than anticipated.

A Quilter's Palette Quilt Pattern

First I must thank you for all of your comments regarding my growing fabric mountain created during flurries of creativity, and I am ever so glad to hear that I am not alone in being at risk of being buried in an avalanche of fabric!

And I am also happy to announce that I have finished the quilt that I have been working on for the last week or so. I have had to tie myself to my chair behind the sewing machine and laptop this week, stitching away to finish this quilt and then write up a new quilt pattern!

The new quilt pattern is called A Quilter's Palette!

I have thoroughly enjoyed working with these colorful fabrics, some of which I have had in my fabric stash for quite some time. Fabrics aren't just for storing though and I am glad to have been able to use some of these special prints in this way.

The Quilter's Palette Quilt has been quilted in my signature style of straight quilting lines stitched with walking foot, one slow stitch at a time.

Similarly, it is bound with one of my favorite binding fabrics, a black/white stripe.

A Cascade of Color

Touching base today to let you know that I am still behind the sewing machine. More blocks have been made, and I may even have started piecing the blocks into a quilt top ...

I have been in fabric heaven piecing these blocks! The patchwork blocks you see here are made using many of my all time favorite designer fabrics, some salvaged from the scrap bin, others cut from stash.

Meanwhile a huge pile of fabric needs returned to stash. Do you return fabric to stash as you go? Or like me in a creative frenzy, allow that pile of fabric to turn into a fabric mountain ready to collapse?

Loulouthi Velveteen by Anna Maria Horner

100% Cotton Velveteen! Now, I'll confess right up that I've not worked with velveteen before so I can't tell you (yet) what it is like to work with. What I can tell you though that it is low pile fibers feel velvety plush and luxuriously soft. The colors are rich and saturated.

The weight of this velveteen collection feels perfect for home decor, bags and accessories, pillows/cushion, and of course I wouldn't hesitate piecing it into a quilt! It is supple and super soft and even a little fancy.

Patchworking

I have my fabric stash organized by color: black/grey, red, pink, orange, green, blue, yellow, white (and then there are those prints that aren't dominant in any of those colors). I really love this arrangement, and enjoy the color spectrum as I work away on my quilts.

To kick start 2012 I thought it might be nice to work with my fabric stash, piecing simple patchwork blocks from within each of the stashed colors.

Blue .... Red .... Yellow .... Green ...

and Orange ...

I have also been enjoying collecting the selvages as I delve deep into my fabric stash. It doesn't take much to make me feel quite content.

There are more blocks to be made. I'll keep stitching.

Half Moon Modern ~ Scissors, Big Zig Zag (Chevron) and Polka Dot

The prints are graphic, bold and fun, and the colors are sharp, vibrant and saturated. I have been tempted to split the bundle up as the colors easily fall into my color coded stash. However I am not ready yet to give up the nicely bundled eye candy, moving it around my sewing area for viewing, and prodding.

Cladonia III

As soon as my new curtains were up and being admired from afar, I turned to my yarn stash, and without so much as a moment of guilt I started a second knitting project. I don't generally like having two knitting projects on the go (as I tend to forget what I am up to) but happily made an exception. This time.

The Yarns:

Cladonia by Kristin Kapur (Again!)

Knitting is my time out, my relaxation, and I make no excuse for having repeated this pattern, Cladonia, for the third time. It is for the most part very easy knitting and purling, increasing stitches at regular intervals with stitch markers as reminders to do so. Perfect holiday knitting.

And the yarn ... so dreamy soft ... makes for the most gorgeous knitted "fabric". Some fierce wet blocking has also nicely removed the irregularities of my left handed knitting idiosyncrasies.

I have followed the pattern verbatim however admit to adding my own stripe study variation by introducing a third color, striping for three rows at regular intervals with the darker yarn which I then also went on to use for the lacy edge (and nicely finished up a leftover skein).

A Little Holiday Crafting

For all the ham, turkey and plum pudding, I couldn't find my knitting groove over the Christmas break. I so tried, and had to grit my teeth as I ripped the lace edge of my knitting project back to the body of the shawl, not once, but twice.

Instead the itch to sew was constant. So shortly after Christmas I gathered together my vintage sheet collection, whipped out the rotary cutter and not long thereafter the sewing machine whirred back into action.

The plan was to make a pair of patchwork curtains for the double window in the upstairs bedroom. Something so simple was soon complicated by a desire to line these curtains with a heavenly lightweight sheer cotton. Several hours was spent (read wasted) contemplating the lining, the layering, hemming, bias binding for edges, nifty ways to suspend the curtains, etc.

However, as soon as I had finished the first fully lined curtain, I didn't like the way it was hanging. The fabric had lost some of it's natural drape (probably because of my lack of experience working with sheer fabric). And so with seam ripper in hand, the patchwork fabric was taken back to it's basic state; just squares sewn together ~ no sheer lining, no pretty Liberty bias binding.

In fact, although both the sides of the curtains have been hemmed, the bottom edge is raw; let's call it organic, natural, edgy.

Once I was happy with the finish (or lack of finish) of the first curtain, the second took no time at all to complete.

I am rather pleased with my decorating efforts and have already measured up another window ready for a similar treatment.
