Signs of Life in Lake Eustis

Ventured out to Eustis last Friday night, over hills and through the rain, to attend the opening of Jeff Whipple's Signs of Life show at the Lake Eustis Museum of Art.

Jeff is an extrordinary talent, and the most prolific artist I know except for maybe my Dad. Certainly my favorite teacher of my college years, he has had a profound influence on not only my sense of design and art, but to a great extent my life and the way I see things.

So, make a trip to Eustis and check out the "Van Gogh" of our times ...

Arriving a day late due to bad weather, we finally reach our destination: TM Studios. Located in Furth, Germany, the studio is in a Post WWI airplane hanger built by the US, and later taken over by the Germans in WWII. After WWII, the airport became civilian, and in the 70s closed entirely. TM Studios have been in building for 14 years. It is extremely cool.

The crew at Red Rocket is very excited to be working on lots of cool projects for Kennedy Space Center. Seeing new projects they will be introducing makes me nostalgic for the school field trips we used to take to the Cape. For those of you who grew up pretty much a local, you understand what I mean. You get on the big bus, head out to KSC for the day to enjoy rockets, spacemen and who can forget the astronaut freeze dried ice cream in neopolitan! If it's been awhile since you've checked out the attraction, you should really give it another try. If you really think about it, all that awesome technology is right in our backyard. It's a shame to take a piece of history for granted by neglecting it. And, if you ever get a chance to see a launch in person, GO... what a thrill! So, if you're looking for something to fill the weekend with, head on over to Kennedy Space Center, it's not just for middle school field trips anymore!

Hollywood wasn't the only place celebrating this weekend. Our hometown of Orlando shined Saturday night with Advertising's Elite stepping out for the Orlando Advertising Federation's ADDY Awards. Yes, I said the "elite". We at Red Rocket certainly do not think of ourselves as "elite"... cool, but not elite. Therefore, our little family of creatives missed out on the festivities Saturday night. Boy was that the wrong move. Much to our surprise, we awoke to the news this morning that our shop of coolness actually took home the coveted prize. Cool, huh? We thought so! What a way to kick off our 10th Anniversary Year! Now, you may be wondering what project of awesomeness took the ADDY. Yea, so do we, so if you find out, please let us know, because we're just dying to know over here!!!

Stay tuned as I go undercover to find the answer to our ADDY quandary. Whatever project won, you can be assured it was spectacular!!! I guess we need to branch out from just being cool and step into the world of the "elite"........

The Daytona 500 is not only a battle of men and machines; it is the battle of the brands!

With Kevin Harvick??s win in both the Busch and Cup race at Daytona, and the Shell-Pennzoil brand gushing from Winner??s Circle, the loser was Sonoco ?? the Official Fuel Supplier of NASCAR, sporting a ten-year exclusivity deal.

Signing on with Richard Childress Racing and Kevin Harvick to sponsor both the Busch and Cup cars ?? Shell-Pennzoil were supposed to be promoting their oil products, but as a consumer, when I see that Shell logo, prominently displayed on Harvick??s helmet and uniform, ...

It's a slow start to the Monday after the big game, but not because of too many beers. My hangover is from big game hype overload. It's kinda like the feeling after the holidays have come and gone and and you're a little bummed because you never did get that Red Ryder BB Gun. I have that same feeling today after the lack of entertainment I really cared about.... the commercials. Now, don't get me wrong, there were a few that sparked my fancy, but not nearly the many belly laughs I was hoping for. For me, Anheuser-Busch seemed to come out on top, my fav being the auctioneer wedding. For my esteemed co-worker Alan, I believe it was the return of Robert Goulet in the Emerald Nuts Ad, however, his new favorite Goulet ring tone he discovered probably has more mileage than the actual commercial.

Even though the commercials left me wanting more, I have to be thankful for some great Superbowl XLI highlights.... The opening return for a touchdown by Da Bears.... (had to go for the Bears since I was eating and drinking on their fans dime :) the Prince halftime show (come on , it's Prince, enough said) the commraderie of friends gathering for yet another excuse to throw back some beers......but now, my greatest highlight is my new Goulet ringtone that let's me know my friends are calling..bring on Superbowl XLII!!!

It seems in today's world, we are overstimulated with brands, products and services leaving companies to ask, "How can we make a statement?" Over the years, guerilla marketing has evolved from a more cost effective way to advertise into a branding competition where the winner takes all no matter what the cost. Coming from a strong radio promotion background, we were taught as interns to get a station name out on the street. There was a certain sense of pride knowing you "stole" a particular event from a competitor or simply saw your banner on some street sign on the ...

Check out this cool Rocket Boat, and check this cool site of old boats sent to us from my borther Patrick in Nokomis.

Be on the lookout for one of these, would be cool to power around on Lake Ivanhoe with it.

Brrrr.... ccccooolllldddd! Even with our cool blue jackets, 9 degrees is darn cold! Had a great time at the Gaylord Palms Resort VCP (Very Cool People) party for the grand opening of ICE!

All of us at Red Rocket took some time to chill out and celebrate our completion of the Christmas in Orlando website, as well as the ICE advertising campaign (regional print and radio creative and production).

Proof That Flash Sites Don't Rank Well in Search Engines

When we design a site for a client, we tell them that if search engine rankings are important stay away from an all-Flash site. This isn't a big secret, but it really hit home when I saw the following:

This is a Google search for "2007 stumpjumper" which is one of the new bikes from Specialized. The first non-sponsored result is a post from one of my blogs. The specialized.com site is built with the content in Flash and PDFs. The microsite they used to promote the 2007 Stumpjumper and Roubaix bikes is all Flash.

Results from specialized.com don't show up until the third results page and that link is a PDF for their new suspension. Not only do HTML sites give search engines content to index but they allow you to use page titles that contain relevant keywords. As they say: the proof is in the rankings.

We just completed a redesign of the Astronaut Scholar Brochure for the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation. Originally designed by Red Rocket in 2003, the new design has been updated to include photos of actual scholars. We thought it essential to the fund raising effort that scholars be featured, as it puts an identifying face(s) to the foundation.

The cover of the brochure features 1998-1999 scholar recipient Captain Trent Kingery of the U.S. Marine Corps. The self-portrait photo was taken by Captain Kingery himself as he was piloting an FA-18 Hornet Strike Fighter. Kingery is currently deployed in the Persian Gulf aboard ...
