Recent News Reports Of Sweetener Reformulations Raise Questions About Motivations

The misleading "health" halo surrounding highly-publicized marketing campaigns regarding sweetener reformulations is starting to dim.

Recent announcements by Starbucks and other brands that they will remove high fructose corn syrup from certain products are being called into question in news articles by several experts and respected journalists. These articles have poked holes in companies' marketing efforts and put forth scientifically substantiated facts about sweeteners commonly used in foods.

Schizophrenia And Bipolar Disorder Share Many Common Genetic Variants Says International Research Consortium

A new study by a large international consortium found that many common genetic variants contribute up to a third of a person's risk of inheriting schizophrenia and many of the same DNA variations are also involved in bipolar disorder. While the study helps to explain the complexity of the genetic make up of these diseases it also suggests that developing a test to predict these diseases will take some time.

A protein that the heart produces during its early development reactivates the embryonic coronary developmental program and initiates migration of heart cells and blood vessel growth after a heart attack, researchers at UT Southwestern Medical Center have found. The molecule, Thymosin beta-4 (TB4), is expressed by embryos during the heart's development and encourages migration of heart cells.

“I have spoken to hundreds of prospective nurses over the years telling them all of the benefits of nursing. I have talked to thousands of oncology nurses around the country who speak of why they chose oncology nursing. Whether it is the relationship they build with the patient and families, the difference they can make in the cancer journey for one patient, or the lessons they learn about life from working with those patients, it all comes down to compassion.”

Read this entire blog to see how the effects of violence in a patient population affects caregivers, who by nature and training, are compassionate.

Nutritional Therapy May Benefit Cancer Patients Undergoing Major Operations

New research from Trinity College Dublin published in this month's Annals of Surgery points to a potentially significant advance in the treatment of patients undergoing major cancer surgery. The study was carried out by the esophageal research group at Trinity College Dublin and St James's Hospital.
A randomized controlled trial showed omega-3 fatty acids given as part of an oral nutritional supplement resulted in the preservation of muscle mass in patients having surgery for esophageal cancer.

“Another hospital has entered a legal settlement over allegations of “dumping” homeless patients on skid row in Los Angeles.”

Continue reading.... a shocking expose’ of what hospitals are doing with their homeless population. Is the U.S. not capable of better discharge planning than dropping someone off in the middle of the city with nowhere to go, no continuity of care, no basic living needs to look forward to?

They are coordinating exercise with fatigue levels, medications, dealing with the psychological/emotional repercussions of having this disease, sensible use of complementary alternative medicine (CAM) therapies and work accommodations.

This video discusses what C Difficile is, how it spreads, how to avoid it and treatments that one can use to control the symptoms and infection. C Difficile is a diarrheal disease complicated by modern medicine. It can occur anywhere where you have vulnerable people taking antibiotics. The spores are in the environment so it is important to use good hygiene and overall cleanliness. It is a hand to mouth transmission. The spores can survive for months to years if not cleaned from the environment.

I have managed to keep more of a postive spotlight on the stories this week despite the myriad of economic hardship blogs that have been rampant regarding the medical industry and the economy in general. From the rehospitalization data, to why it’s bad to grind your teeth, the topics have been diverse, interesting, and timely. On a blog-related side note, Kevin, MD (somewhat of a pioneer in the medical blogosphere) has been rearranging his blog site and is now located with a group of health professionals called HCPLive Network.

“Bruxism or teeth grinding is considered a sleep disorder when a person is experiencing it chronically and often leads to possible complications. Bruxism happens when a person is clenching their teeth forcefully during sleep or even when awake. Old and young people can both experience bruxisms although it is commonly seen among children especially during sleep. Some complications associated with bruxism are aspiration of blood during sleep and tooth loss.”

A new therapy for metastatic prostate cancer has shown considerable promise in early clinical trials involving patients whose disease has become resistant to current drugs. Of 30 men who received low doses of one the drugs in a multisite phase I/II trial designed to evaluate safety, 22 showed a sustained decline in the level of prostate specific antigen (PSA) in their blood.
