Complete with all-blonde Madonna hair, the UP Pep Squad wins the 2011 Cheerdance Competition Title for two consecutive years in front of 20, 842 people, Saturday (September 17) at the Araneta Coliseum. La Salle Animo Squad bagged the 1st runner up while the FEU Cheering Squad, which foiled UP's three-peat bid last 2009 settle for 2nd runner up.

FEU squeak past UST via a buzzer-beating triple

FEU Tams escaped UST Tigers, 62-59, as rookie Mike Tolomia nailed a match-clinching triple with 2.9 ticks left in the 74th UAAP Men’s basketball tournament Saturday at the Big Dome. Tolomia caught a timely kick-out pass from reigning MVP RR Garcia, who drove to the lane with the time winding down. With the recent win, FEU now holds the solo second in the standings with a 4-1 record.

The last time UST won against FEU was way-back 2007.

Former FEU President, PNoy's Aunt dead

FEU-NRMF's Board of Trustees Chair and Former Far Eastern University President Josephine Cojuangco-Reyes, 82 years old died yesterday after she collapsed following her eulogy for elder brother Pedro Cojuangco at the Sanctuario de San Antonio, Makati City. She was rushed to St. Lukes hospital, but to no avail.

Josephine Reyes is an elder sister of the late President Corazon Aquino, hence aunt of the current President Benigno Aquino, Jr. who was married to Nicanor Reyes, Jr. - son of FEU founder Dr. Nicanor Reyes Sr.

She served as the 7th president of FEU for 4 years, next to his husband's term.

She was the link between FEU and the Aquinos, President Noynoy Aquino and his sisters Ballsy, Pinky and Kris Aquino were born in FEU Hospital. Former President Cory Aquino studied law in FEU for 1 year until she got married to Ninoy Aquino.

NBA Superstar Kobe Bryant wears the FEU Jersey at the Araneta Coliseum Wednesday afternoon for a Nike-Sponsored Demonstration game featuring Smart-Gilas and select UAAP players. This is Kobe’s 3rd visit to the Philippines as Nike’s brand ambassador. Manila is his first stop of his five-city Asian tour. “I love Manila. This is one of my favorite cities in the world”, says Kobe.

Kobe Bryant was the third NBA player who wore the FEU jersey. First was Paul Pierce and second was Vince Carter. In 2005, Vince Carter visited the FEU Gym for the school’s pep rally for UAAP Season 68 and the Tamaraws went on to capture the UAAP Men's Basketball title that year - It was a three-peat.

Over 12,000 students and athletes are expected to join the festivities today (July 9, 2011) at the Marikina Sports Complex. Rain or shine the event starts at exactly 4pm which will be aired live over Studio 23, free admission at the venue. University of Santo Tomas (UST) will have the largest contingent for the parade with 627 athletes, followed by University of the East with 512, University of the Philippines (UP) with 425, De La Salle University (DLSU) with 417, Adamson University (AdU) and Far Eastern University (FEU) with 300 and National University with 260.

PBA Cager Olsen Racela, one of Ateneo’s most successful products in the field of sports, will carry the torch and eventually light the cauldron to symbolize the opening of the season that will champion the theme "All Heart, All Out." Also among the highlights of the affair is the solemn entry of colors where Ateneo cadets will bring inside the sports facility a 60 feet x 30 feet flag.The Opening Ceremonies will end with a free concert as well featuring Spongecola, Itchy Worms, and Kjwan plus a fireworks display to cap the day. It will be the first time in recent memory that the opening will be held outside the Big Dome and no games will proceed thereafter. "We want to show that there's more to the league than just basketball", says UAAP 74 President Ricky Palou. Former UST Tigresses coach now at the Tamaraws' lair

Coach Shaq Delos Santos first steered the Tigresses to the 2009 National University Games,
then added the Shakey's V-League Season 7 first conference crown. UST won the 72nd UAAP women's volleyball plum then successfully defended the 2010 UniGames trophy.

Few months ago, news came out that UST Tigresses Head Coach Cesael "Shaq" Delos Santos resigned from his post. Reportedly, UST Athletics Director Father De Sagon didn't accept the former's resignation letter the first time, so they had a meeting to settle things out. Apparently, Coach Shaq expressed its "time to move on". Where is Coach Shaq heading now?

He's back where he truly belongs, in the Tamaraw lair. As an article by Lhea Bagona puts it, "He defanged himself to unleash the horns and get back to where he truly belongs knowing there is no place like home".

A former FEU Spiker, Delos Santos officially signed with FEU last April 1st and is returning to the land of green and gold, this time to beef up the coaching staff of the FEU Women's Volleyball Team, despite previously losing prized player, former UAAP MVP Cherry Vivas as the latter transfers to National University.

"Shaq" was a BS Management Graduate of FEU and led the Tamaraw squad to a UAAP volleyball championship during his final playing year in 1999. Last March, his contract ended with University of Santo Tomas (UST). Before he decided to return, he had always kept in touch with his former Men's Volleyball mentor and now Lady Tamaraws Head Coach Nestor Pamilar.

Indeed, two forces will reunite this year to bring boost to the Lady Tams' UAAP 74 campaign, with the aim to bring back the women's volleyball crown to Morayta. At present, The FEU Volleyball Team is currently on the lookout for new talented recruits, in time for UAAP 74 Volleyball opening next semester.

Total ban on pirated DVDs in Quiapo

It's first Friday of the month and its Quiapo day for devotees of the Black Nazarene today (July 1, 2011), and starting this date, a total ban on selling pirated DVDs within Quiapo area will be strictly enforced by the City of Manila led by Mayor Alfredo Lim. This is after a one month grace period given by the local government to mostly Muslim vendors in a tight Muslim community of Quiapo.

Thursday night, vendors had a bargain-spree in a desperate move to consume all their stocks and went on to sell DVD for as low as 5 pesos each. Mayor Lim has also rejected a plea by ARMM vice gubernatorial bet Margarita Cojuangco to extend the deadline for stopping the sale of pirated CDs and DVDs in the area.

The feisty Mayor said he had only allowed the vendors to violate the law before due to humanitarian consideration, but as Lim pointed out, now they must stop. Following a report of a Washington-based office of the US Trade Representative citing Quiapo as one of the most notorious markets for pirated products.

Highlights: Kapamilya celebrity, FEU Alum himself Vice Ganda stole the limelight as he throws support anew to FEU for the upcoming University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) season 74.

In the basketball match between the FEU All Stars and the 2011 Basketball Team, the legends defeated the Season 74 team by a measly three points, 71-68. The current roster made a huge run in the last period, cutting the deficit from 20 points thru RR Garcia's leadership. It wasn't enough though to win against a team led by PBA star Arwind Santos.

FEU retires and hangs jersey #14 to the rafters in honor of another Tamaraw star, Johnny Abarrientos.

CHED to improve its class suspension protocol

Heeding complaints from students trapped in flooded streets around Metro Manila in last week’s monsoon rains brought by tropical storm “Falcon”, The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) vowed to improve its class suspension protocol to include occasions of severe weather and flooding in areas not under storm alerts. CHED memo order no. 34 series of 2010, classes in the college-level will only be automatically suspended during a signal no. 3 typhoon. Schools are given discretion to suspend classes during signal no. 1 and 2 typhoons.

Social networking sites were abuzz as students wait for the announcement of suspension.

Twitter user @janinageronimo has this to say “Don't ever expect CHED to suspend college classes unless you want another Ondoy.” Another twitter user @alvindakis said “CHED defers decision to school admins if classes were to suspend. Maybe they'll be happier to see students float in the streets, literally.” COMELEC Spokesman James Jimenez also vent ire on the micro blogging site “If CHED can't decide, at least it should call all colleges and universities and report their responses. Service always.”, he tweeted.

Kabataan Partylist likewise scored CHED in its “weak and indecisive” suspension of class policy. “Students are battered every time they are forced to brave the stormy weather to go to school. This unnecessary agony could be prevented if CHED would be more decisive in exercising it regulatory powers with regard to the suspension of classes .

“We’ll try to make it easier for our students.”

CHED executive director Julito Vitriolo said the commission would tap social media (Yes, twitter/facebook) and maximize its website (www.ched.gov.ph) to make timely announcements about class suspensions, including discretionary decisions of individual universities and colleges. “What we will do is order our regional offices to collate information. We’ll improve information dissemination so that the students will be better informed in decision-making,” Vitriolo said.

He said CHED relies on information from the weather bureau and disaster agencies in deciding whether to suspend classes in certain areas. “There are constraints but, for example, certain universities have suspended classes, we will collate that information and relay that [to media] for broadcast, although schools can already go straight to media also,”. He further said that CHED will be “more proactive” and make use of “social communication” to provide students advance information about class suspensions, recognizing that the sector it serves relies more on the Internet for information.

Note: In NCR alone, CHED holds authority to over 300 public and private higher education institutions. Nationwide, there are about 2,180 colleges and institutions under CHED.

V-league down to four teams

The Shakey’s V-League suffered a major (major) blow after four teams pulled out of the competition, leaving the country’s premiere volleyball tournament with only four teams left when it opens its Season 8 second conference this July 10.

Ricky Palou, president of the organizing Sports Vision, said only Ateneo, University of Perpetual Help, San Sebastian College and Lyceum were left in the roster after Adamson University and Far Eastern University begged off from competition. University of Santo Tomas and La Salle, which missed the previous conference, also confirmed that they won’t see action just like last conference, citing the academic load of players.

Adamson and FEU also withdrew for the same reason. But Sports Vision chairman Moying Martelino said the league won’t settle for four teams, saying they are negotiating with four more teams to join since he said the ideal number of teams is eight. With the pull-out of a total of four UAAP Schools, this could be the final curtain for V-league. We hope its not the end though.

UAAP 74: "All Out, All Heart"

“We will do it like the Asian Games. It will be one big opening ceremony. All athletes from the other sports events, and not just basketball will come, just like in the Asiad.” – Ricky Palou, UAAP 74 President

An Asian Games-inspired opening ceremony for UAAP Season 74 will break the usual tradition where only basketball teams and performers are seen during these events. This year, the opening rites will be attended by all competing athletes from the eight participating universities. It will happen on July 9th at the Marikina Sports Complex and for the first time no basketball game will be played on the opening day.

The ceremony will highlight the torch relay and the lighting of the UAAP flame.

The next day, FEU will face La Salle at 2pm while host Ateneo meets Adamson at 4pm.

2011 Cinemalaya entry taken inside FEU Manila

Cinemalaya entry tilted “Ang Sayaw ng Dalawang Kaliwang Paa” (The Dance of Two Left Feet) by Alvin Yapan and Alemberg Ang had its entire production taken inside Far Eastern University Manila with guest participation of the FEU Dance Company. The film is starred by Jean Garcia, Paulo Avelino and Rocco Nacino. “It's a love triangle with a twist. Sobrang galing ng pagkakagawa nito!” said young actor Rocco Nacino in a recent press conference.

Ang Sayaw ng Dalawang Kaliwang Paa explores the intersection and divergence between feminist and gay concerns in the third world context, as it features the poetry of Merlinda Bobis, Ruth Elynia Mabanglo, Joi Barrios, Rebecca Anonuevo, Benilda Santos and Ophelia Dimalanta. When Marlon, a college student, stalks Karen, his literature professor, he finds out that she moonlights as a choreographer and dance teacher in a dance studio. Frustrated over his performance in her literature class, he plans to impress her instead by learning to poeticize his body movements and enroll in her dance class. He hires his classmate to teach him the basics of dancing. As Dennis, his tutor, teaches him how his body should move, Marlon begins to understand the intersections between the art of poetry and dance.

This opens up his world to new insights about Karen’s life as a single woman who chose to live the life of an artist in a third world setting. Marlon begins to understand how the poems being discussed by Karen in class are testaments to her choice to stand by her art. Karen eventually finds out, through Dennis, that Marlon only enrolled in her class to be near her. She confronts Marlon about this and wishes that his interest for dance would survive his infatuation for her. Marlon feels betrayed over Dennis telling Karen. But it is also this sense of betrayal that tells him that he has already become close to Dennis, whom he now considers a friend. Up until then, Marlon and Dennis have become inseparable as they both tackled the complexities of poetry and dance. Sensing the coldness between the two, Karen set them up to help her train a group of dancers for a cotillion dance.

Eventually, Karen trains both Marlon and Dennis to star in her dance adaptation of the epic Humadapnon, when she bags a grant. Marlon will play the lead role of Humadapnon, who becomes trapped in a cave full of women. Dennis’ character now has to rescue Marlon from the women, as he plays the role of Sunmasakay, the male incarnation of the goddess Nagmalitong Yawa. On the eve of their performance, in a drunken conversation, Marlon confronts Karen how he could not understand her poetry. Karen, in response, assures Marlon that he does understand her poetry. His mind is just unwilling to, unlike his body which already understands. Karen invites Marlon to dance with her, but in the middle of her dance, she passes him onto Dennis. Their drunken dance culminates with Marlon and Dennis taking on the roles of Humadapnon and Sunmasakay on stage.

Cinemalaya opens its seventh year on July 15th and its getting bigger and better each year with two theaters at Greenbelt 3 will be dedicated to Cinemalaya on July 16-24, 2011. The films to be shown at Greenbelt will be those in competition in the New Breed Full Length Feature category, the Short Feature Category, the Directors Showcase, and NETPAC Philippine Premieres. The films of the new Focus Asia section of Cinemalaya will also be shown at Greenbelt. At the CCP, the Festival will be held in seven venues. The opening ceremony is slated on July 15, 6:00 pm followed by the festival opening film at the CCP Main Theater. The Cinemalaya Awards Night will be held on July 24, 7:00 pm at the same venue.

The nine finalists of the New Breed Full Length Feature category each received a P500,000 seed grant from the Cinemalaya Foundation as investment for the production. The Best Full Length Feature Film will receive a prize of P200,000 and the Balanghai Trophy. The New Breed Full Length feature category is open to Filipino filmmakers who have not yet directed more than three full feature films.

THE EMPOWERED TRIO: From left to right, representing SAMASA Party Alliance’s big win in the FEU Students’ Election ten days ago (February 18) are Student Council Presidents-elect, (IABF) Jayvee Badile, (IAS) Johanna Lauraya and (IARFA) Anthony Pla. FEU grad on top of medical exams again

Another graduate of Far Eastern University – Nicanor Reyes Medical Foundation (FEU-NRFM) topped the recent medical examination for two consecutive years.

With a rating of 86.33 %, Eleanor De Guzman Dela Pena led the 654 others who passed the Physician Licensure Examination for February 2011, announced by the Professional Regulation Commission on Friday. Also from FEU-FERN was Noreen Manlapaz Dizon, who landed on top 5 with 85.17 percent. Last year, It was Marie Jo-Ann Beltran Cabanting of FEU-NRMF who topped the examinations.

FEU-NRMF likewise topped the February 2011 list of the top performing medical schools in the Philippines with 86.24 passing percentage.

Tams claim 5-peat in UAAP Chess

The FEU Men’s Chess team won its fifth straight UAAP crown and 12th overall. The Tamaraws blanked La Salle, 4-0 to seal their 5-peat victory Saturday at the FEU Technology Building. FEU accumulated 43 points, while University of Santo Tomas placed second with 35 points, and Adamson finished third with 26.5 points. FEU’s Sheider Nebato won his second straight Most Valuable Player award and teammate Lennon Hart Salgado was awarded Rookie of the Year. The team also won the jackpot prize in Eat Bulaga’s Pinoy Henyo after sweeping the first round eliminations last month.

Various innovations, like customized team cubicles and digital chess clocks were introduced this year by UAAP Chess host, Far Eastern University which earned raves from member schools. As such, FEU will be hosting the tournament again in season 74.

The FEU Student Body has spoken – Samahan ng mga mag-aaral para sa Sambayanan (SAMASA) overwhelmed Sandigan Party by winning the majority of elective positions available in Friday’s Student Election at the Far Eastern University campus in Manila. Thirty-five posts have been claimed by SAMASA out of the available 60 seats in six institutes excluding the central student organization, noteworthy is a clean sweep in the Institute of Accounts, Business and Finance (IABF) and the Institute of Arts and Sciences (IAS). IAS has the biggest student population come AY 2011-2012. The result from the recent poll was SAMASA’s biggest win over the past three years.

“REDeem the true essence of leadership” was SAMASA’s battle cry this year

RP as the ‘Ubelt’ of Asia

A total of 19,121 foreigners have flocked to the Philippines last year to seek for higher and quality education, thus affirming the country’s status as the university belt of Asia. The number was an improvement from the 2008 record which registered 18,353 foreign enrollees. South Koreans topped the list of foreign students with 6,000, followed by 3,395 Chinese, 2,980 Iranians and 1,004 Americans. The list also includes hundreds of Indonesians, Indians, Taiwanese, Kuwaitis, Nepalese, Thais, Sudanese, Vietnamese, Nigerians, Kenyans, Japanese, Pakistanis, Timorese, and Myanmar nationals.

“The fact that many foreigners are studying here means that the quality of our educational system is continuously improving. Our schools are competing with the best of their counterparts in Asia in attracting foreign enrollees,” Bureau of Immigration Commissioner Ronaldo Ledesma has said.

Most of the foreign students are studying in Metro Manila, with the biggest number of enrollees at the Centro Escolar University (1,066). Other schools that have significant foreign student populations are the University of the East (799), Far Eastern University (673), Manila Central University (504), University of Santo Tomas (453), De La Salle University (396), and Fatima (309).

Far Eastern University Manila recently celebrated the Chinese New Year through the Institute of Hotel and Tourism Management (ITHM), at the ground floor of ARH Building with FEU officials gracing the event led by President Lydia Echauz. Its been a vision-mission of FEU to be a university of choice in Asia as it strives to contribute to the advancement of the global society.

FEU sweeps UAAP 73 Athletics meet

Far Eastern University swept the Men’s and Women’s 73rd UAAP Athletics title Monday (January 31) at the Philsports oval in Pasig City. The recent win placed FEU on top as the winningest team in the history of UAAP Athletics having the most number of titles (19 titles) in both Men’s and Women’s categories. Furthermore, the Green and Gold tracksters have swept the Track and Field tourney for a record 11 seasons.

The Lady Tamaraws sustained its mastery of the tournament after clinching its eight straight UAAP crown by amassing a total of 303 points. UST came in second place with 252 and UE at third with 102 points. FEU’s Dalyn Carmen and Aprilen Laudencia was the Most Valuable Player and Rookie of the Year awardee respectively. Laudencia won gold in the high jump and 1 silver on long jump, while Carmen won three golds in 10,000m run; 5,000m run and 3,000m steeplechase.

In the men’s category, the Tamaraws relied on a strong finish in the 4x400 meter relay team (3:23.68) and to 19 year old Jesson Cid who had 4 golds, 1 silver and 1 bronze. Tams overthrew last year’s champion UE by just a single point in the overall tally, 202-201 to regain the title they last won in 2008. Cid was awarded Most Valuable Player, no less. He had a remarkable performance in the decathlon event (6134 pts) which broke his own UAAP record and national junior record.

The FEU Basketball Stars and the FEU Cheering Squad were just on Showtime last Thursday, with Vice Ganda leading the Tamaraw invasion of ABS-CBN’s noontime show – two days after, Reigning UAAP Champion FEU Chess Team represented by Sheider Nebato and Kevin Mirano played in Eat Bulaga’s Pinoy Henyo segment. They did not only bested out the Adamson and UST contingent, they have actually won the jackpot prize!

Three-term Senator Miriam Defensor Santiago’s talk at the Far Eastern University Thursday, centered on youth empowerment through new media. Santiago did not appear at the Senate public hearing that day. “Sinabi ko sa sarili ko, aabsent ako sa Senado pero di sa pagpunta sa FEU, the Senator remarked.

“When someone says, Ang Ganda mo! I say, Sana ikaw din.” “Hindi ko sinasabing maganda ako, ang sinasabi ko panget ka” – Senator Santiago started her talk with pick-up lines that drew laughter around the fabled auditorium. Over a thousand audience attended the symposium including students, professors, school officials and even the media. The event was sponsored by the FEU College Y Club, the Political Science – International Studies Society and the Institute of Arts and Sciences Student Council.

PINOY WIKILEAKS

Senator Santiago pushed for a Philippine version of WikiLeaks, purposively to shame corrupt public officials. “In social media networks such as Facebook and Twitter, you have the opportunity to express your opinion in fighting the culture of corruption in our society.” Santiago said that since the youth are more knowledgeable about computers and the internet, creating a website similar to WikiLeaks is one way of being proactive in helping the government.

WikiLeaks is a nonprofit media organization whose goal is “to bring important news and information to the public.” It provides a new, secure, and anonymous way, by means of its so-called electronic drop box, so that sources could leak information to its journalists, it is “principled leaking”. It has caused an international uproar though as it has released not only confidential messages about the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, but also about the conduct of American diplomacy around the world. It has succeeded in bringing to light secret information about governments and corporations.“I urge you as FEU students to study the case of WikiLeaks, winner of the 2009 New Media Award for human rights reporting, from Amnesty International,” Santiago said.

She added that “university students can use the internet for conducting investigative journalism. You can access anonymous sources of information. You should provide a high security anonymous dropbox to provide maximum protection to your sources.”

For those really interested would-be leakers, Santiago offered more tips.

“You should operate a number of supporters across our archipelago. Do not keep logs, so that the logs cannot be seized. Provide instructions on how to submit materials to you, via net cafes, wireless hot spots, and even the post office. This way, if your Wiki is infiltrated by an external agency, your sources cannot be traced,” she said.

The senator said that under Philippine criminal law, the main liability for internet whistleblowers is a charge of espionage. “However, the Espionage Law was intended to target those who seek to disclose classified information to aid a foreign government. But this provision might not apply against an actor who discloses classified information for other reasons, such as to name and shame crooks in a corrupt government agency,” she explained. “I believe that if Congress wants to shut down your Wiki site, Congress will have to draft a new law, more explicitly criminalizing the sources of leaks of classified information.”

The senator however clarified that she is not advocating computer hacking, but more publishing on the internet to improve transparency in the government. A US landmark case ruled that only a free and unrestrained press can effectively expose deception in government. “Ladies and gentlemen of FEU – be vigilant against corruption! For vigilance is the price of freedom from corruption.”, Santiago finally concluded.
