ReDesign Hiatus

I hope everyone is having a great summer. It's true I have been on some sort of ReDesign hiatus. I have to admit my creative ReDesign efforts have slacked a bit. I could try to blame it all on the Georgia's scorching Summer heat but, I won’t. I have however, noticed some interesting style elements in both the fashion and interior design scene that I am excited to share with all of you in the upcoming post. I just wanted to give a quick update for all to stay tuned for what’s to come. Ciao, for now and happy sunbathing and cool lemonade sipping by the poolside!

When redesigning your home there are some things to consider when creating that inviting ambiance that you've so been yearning. Choose design elements according to the energy and feel that key elements give off. Every room and its contents should have a meaning a purpose and feel. When you walk into your space you should almost feel like you are being transcended into another realm. A realm filled with all the pleasantries your heart desires. When I was a kid (waaaaaay back before I earned my design stripes), my dad gave me a little pearl of wisdom that has become central to my low-cost, high-style approach to decorating, or what I like to call "quantum design."

He told me that to really appreciate anything to its fullest, you must first understand it thoroughly. Apply this rule of thumb to your decor and you're using quantum physics to save money on decorating.

If quantum physics doesn't seem so simple, let me use your stuff to explain:

Most of us are living in a space where the decor consists of things we call our stuff; material possessions that we can clearly see as tangible objects. Each item is made up of atoms, molecules, light and energy; each is organic, just like you.

Design With Exspansion In Mind

Is there a room in your home that is too small and causing you to have decorating woes? Expanding your space with a home renovation can easily solve that problem. However, if you can’t afford that renovation project just yet there are a few things you can do to increase your space.

In order to visually increase the appearance of your living space use color schemes that are lighter in shade. Lighter colors are excellent for creating the illusion of a larger room. Dark color do the absolute opposite. Dark colors lessen the space. Color schemes to consider are neutrals, pastels and white variations such eggshell or bone white.

Another important element to creating an open space is lighting. Introducing light that literally bounces of the ceilings or installing recessed spot lighting is a perfect way for small spaces to quickly expand. Creating a seamless feel from ceiling to floor is the key. Avoid dark flooring. Seek lighter colored flooring for a endless appearance. Examples of such flooring are the lighter shades of carpeting or the lighter tones of oak wood flooring. These simple enhancements invites the open feel.

As mentioned in a previous post; the use of a single color scheme with items such as furniture, rugs and wall art help in creating that uniform yet expanded illusion. However, in order to spruce things up a bit introduce variances in shades as well as textures of that same color grouping.

Adding wall mirrors or mirror tiles to a focal wall in the room also gives the illusion of increased space. Mirrors do a superb job of reflecting light and color.

Here are a final few things to remember when creating space:
Don’t over accessorize with too many furniture pieces. Instead of opting for a the traditional 3-piece furniture set consider a love seat and 2 outspokenly designed sitting chairs. Remember less, light and bright is more when creating added space.

Recession Proof ing your Décor

Wanting to redesign your space however, is left with the feeling that perhaps now is not the right time to do so? Are the constant warnings to cut back due to the state of the economy leaving you a bit hesitant? Honestly, with a little creativity and the ability to give a few key pieces a second life it can be done for a fraction of the amount. It’s truly about the ability to expand on your ideas and come up with keen ways to make your space look like you spent a great deal when you really didn't. When it comes to colors it’s always best to choose a color that is most appealing to you. Consider supplementing that color with several related colors in the same group for a nice harmony of hues. Choosing monochromatic shades is classic yet trendy. Adding accent color items as finishing touches like silver, bronze, black or white will boost your color scheme perfectly

Use existing items within your home. Visit your garage, basement and other rooms of your home and consider grouping similar items by them or color together to make a room have more a designer collection feel. Remember everything does not necessarily have to always match. Diversity brings a little something to be reckoned with.

I know I often discuss one of my favorite design styles “Shabby Chic” however; I'm an Aficionada of numerous other design styles as well. It’s a brand New Year once again. It’s that time again for kicking off New Year’s Resolutions. A time to consider how to re-design or morph into a new improved you. As you work on improving self, you may want to make a few changes or updates to improve your surroundings. A change in your surroundings will bring a fresh new aura that is sure to aide in igniting the new you. So now that you have your resolutions list in order and you plan of action covered, consider enhancing your surrounding ambiance with a few of these redesign tips:

Spruce up worn upholstered furniture with updated slipcovers.

Renew wooden furniture by staining or painting a new color

Redesign Chic...Oh So Shabby Chic!

When putting a look that is considered a bit shabby but never short on chic then, it’s always good to use Asian/French inspired design patterns such as Brocade, Damask, Jacquard and Toile in your décor. These inspired design patterns always gives a look that’s stylish and seamless. Shabby Chic is a style that is often used of late and is considered a feminine and romantic style of decorating. A lot of the elements used are French/Victorian inspired. This decorative style can give your space a cottage like style or feel. Although this style has been around for sometime Rachel Ashwell made the term a la mode. Rachel now designs high end furniture, bedding and accessories through her company called, what else but “Shabby Chic”.

Shabby Chic is all about incorporating vintage pieces in a more ccontemporary way. Due to the vintage theme, shopping at garage sales and flea markets are a great way to find beautiful pieces. Often a lot of white, nudes and very soft pinks and blues are used in this design element. The furniture used is often grand and cozy with charming pillows for the right touch.

Elements such as painted wood, metals and accessories with a crystal or a lace touch.. A vintage chandelier is often the right touch or centerpiece for your Shabby Chic spce. Keep in mind when creating your space things to not have to match or appear perfect. There is no need for sets here. Don’t be afraid to mix the china up a bit. Incorporate romantic roses, vintage paintings that speak love. Shabby Chic gives vintage accents new life and new function and purpose. It's a style that makes you feel pretty and complete. Here are some vital steps to take when researching and selecting a Builder:

1. Seek Professional Recommendations: Contact your local Home Builders Associations that regulate homebuilders and ensure the use good business practices. This a great place to find a Builder who has agreed to support the standards upheld by the Home Building Association. It is good to find a Builder that has a good reputation among other builders as well as their clients. The Home Builders Association will not be able to make a legal recommendation however; they can refer you to Builders based on your search criteria and point you in the right direction.

2. Word of Mouth/Testimonials: It’s always good to ask around and hear testimonials from people who currently are remodeling/building or have had a home remodeled or built. Listen to their experiences, did everything go smoothly and in a timely manner, were there just a few hiccups along the way or were there some major catastrophes or nightmares during the building process. It is testimonies or advice such as this that is vital when making ones decision.

3. Review Track Records: A good thing to do is look around and see which Builders are building the most homes in your area. Finding a Builder who has been around for some time is also a key indication of stability, a Builder you can trust with building your ultimate dream home. Look into which awards were given to specific Builders for their outstanding work. Sometimes these Builders rates may be a tad bit higher but you have a greater chance of having your dream home meeting your standards and expectations.

4. The Interview and Selection: After researching and hearing about the different Builders in your area it is now time to make your selection. Use the information you have compiled from the previous steps. Narrow down your choices to a final three if need be. Set up consultations with your final three and interview them each. This should not obligate you to use their services in any way. This is their moment to convince you why they would the best choice verses their competition. Take notes and review whose concepts best match your criteria and your building needs.
Beware of any pressure tactics that could be used in order to get you to make the decision now. This is not a decision that should be made hastily. There are many important factors to consider when you make your final choice. It is better to take your time and be certain you have found the Home Builder or Remodeler that is right for you. Be sure to feel good about your selection. Remember this is your dream home, your vision and your future.

Deciding on whether to purchase and remodel an existing home or purchase and build a new construction can be a task. Making the decision to remodel or build your home may be one of the most important decisions that you will ever make in life time. Building a home can sometimes can leave you feeling bitter/sweet with many ups and downs initially if planned correctly.
Proper planning will ensure things go smoothly on your path to homeownership. There may be situations beyond your control at times even with proper planning. When those few set backs or bumps along the way occur, it’s essential to have a Builder that is experienced as well as one that understands your specific building vision and needs.
