So it’s finally upon us. The return of the return of the living dead on AMC. The Dead are back to rule the airwaves (okay, cable tubes) once again. Now I’ve been wanting to talk about this masterpiece of a show for awhile. Cy gave The Walking Dead the RedEye Rogue seal of approval in an old post… and even went so far as to submit a cut for a television promo for the damn show. It didn’t go well. We try to keep things light here at RedEye Rogue, and it’s hard to find any good parodies of Walking Dead. Until now.

It’s going to happen eventually. It’s the talk that every parent looks to with trepidation. Sooner or later little Johnny or Jane is going to ask what a cylon is. Or who Starbuck is and how does she relate to Apollo…and who is Commander Adama… and so on and so forth. Determining the appropriate age to introduce your child to the world of Battlestar Galactica can be a sticky thing. Just ask the folks behind the public service announcement “Talking to Your Kids About Star Wars” from Asylum Films; The PSA highlights just how difficult it can be to raise a kid in a post-Special Edition world. Important issues are covered such as; who shot first? Han or Greedo?; Anakin’s appearance in Return of the Jedi; and revealing Vaders identity to your kids. Watch this new documentary and you’ll see that you aren’t alone in your parenting dilemmas.
Sucker Punch reminded me of Moulin Rouge and Scott Pilgrim. It was a musical for gamers and geeks. Yes the movie was a mess, but it was one beautiful mess. I know that to escape the soul crushing boredom of my job I, like Baby Doll, retreat into a fantasy world. I do not, as Baby Doll did, begin to erotically sway my hips and go into a trance, but i do imagine my workplace as something quite different than it actually is. Ah, bringing down those demons and dragons, capturing that fire, grasping for the map and the key. To be managed is to be controlled, and nobody wants to be controlled. So, like Babydoll, we dance our way into our fantasies. We retreat. We collapse. We fall into what we are “Hoping” for, or “fighting” for. Fantasies of Escape.
I’ve always wanted to put the objective “to save the world, and get the girl” on my resume, but I’m not sure it would fly with employers. Truth is, when people ask me what my goals in life are, that’s actually the answer I give. Might as well shoot for the stars. After all isn’t that what all true heroes do? They make the world a better place, while at the same time falling in love? While he certainly made the world a better place by killing off the douchebags, and was sucessful in getting the girl, did Scott Pilgrim end up with the right girl? Was he fighting for the wrong girl from the start? Maybe it would have been too anticlimactic to have Scott fight and defeat all those foes only to “settle” for Knives in the end? The question is what was Scott fighting for? Infatuation, or love? There’s nothing quite like infatuation however to throw your life upside down and inside out. But when it happens, it’s like being touched by God.

“Hit Girl is a character that I have never seen on screen before. She is an 11 year old girl assassin. This girl played amazingly by Chloe Grace Moretz is a walking destruction machine. She shoots, she stabs, she bayonets. She does things on screen that literally left my mouth agape. FYI- no studio would touch this movie. They loved it but said you gotta take out Hit Girl. No one would finance a film with an 11 year old girl killer. Those movies are just not made in Hollywood.” -Melissa SilverStein, The Politics of Hit Girl at WomenAndHollywood.com “One of the main characters, Hit Girl, is a stone cold killer who calls victims cunts and motherfuckers, traits that would be soporifically old hat if not for their belonging, in this case, to an 11-year-old girl. (Also, a lot of people – though Ebert’s not one of them – seem a hell of a lot more upset by her language than by watching her eviscerate other human beings or be brutalized herself, which got my “Wow, this culture is fucked up” antennae wiggling.)” – Kate Harding, In Defense of Hit Girl, Jezebel.com “”We just really wanted Hit-Girl to [...]

I like to think that in the end the Master Chief did it all for love. If there ever was to be a Halo film, it would be a mistake not to include a love interest for the chief. All great Hollywood films, at their core, had a love story, and Halo should be no different. Well most anyway. War movies often don’t. But then you lose half your audience. Tough decisions for the producers to make. No wonder it’s taking so long for them to make the frakkin movie. In the mean time we have the live action Halo Reach trailers “The Halo: Reach live action film ‘Deliver Hope’ is a dramatic depiction of the sacrifice paid by Noble Team on the battlefield…sometimes in the face of unfathomable odds, the only way to accomplish a mission is to pay the ultimate price.” -Halo Waypoint As Evan Narcisse over at Techland.time.com put it: “This one…“Deliver Hope” in particular may get a few eyes wet as we see a Spartan fall only to have her load picked up by another. … And there’s nothing like watching things explode with slow, mournful music running in the background.” Well put.
I am going to get airlocked for suggesting this, but do we really need a live-action Halo film? While it’s quite possible that the Peter Jackson produced/Neil Blomkamp directed film adaptations would have been very good, it’s also equally foreseeable that they may have ruined the franchise. Any Halo film could do that. On the other hand, why make a live-action Halo film when there have already been several fantastic shorts made? I’m talking of course about those absolutely stunning short films (the so-called “trailers”) produced by microsoft and currently running on YouTube… Haven’t seen them yet? Well check this baby out (and no, it’s not an advertisement for the marines): This particular Halo trailer (an orgy of boyhood scifi buck rogers fantasy for gen x’ers) was directed by Rupert Sanders, an up-and-coming filmmaker who has landed his first Hollywood feature to direct Leo DiCaprio’s “The Low Dweller”. The short owes everything to what has come before it; Star Wars, Terminator, Galactica, Black Hawk Down, Saving Private Ryan, etc. It’s Halo’s Apoclypse Now. The song: “Light of Aidan – Lament” by Cafe del Mer, with lyrics in Welsh translate something to: “– Music, Welsh translation “We cheat Death from [...]
