Parents,

The CBE is in the process of conducting a school fees review. This work provides parents with a valuable opportunity to share their thoughts and ideas regarding fees.

Some of you may have already participated in parent focus groups, but there are some additional opportunities coming up to share your views. We would really appreciate your active involvement. This is a chance for you to be heard.

How can you participate?

1. Complete this 10-minute online survey by March 5 at the following link: http://www.CBEparentsurvey.com

2. Attend a parent focus group to discuss fees 7-9 p.m. on Feb. 27 at the Education Centre (1221 – 8 Street SW). Full details and to RSVP: http://www.cbe.ab.ca/New/spotlights11-12/120210-parents-share.asp. All parents are welcome to attend.

Road crashes are the leading cause of teenage death in Canada. On Thursday, March 1st, MADD Canada will present “DAMAGES”, a multi-media production that is open to Grade 12 and CALM classes at 2:30 pm in the Main Gym. We encourage as many classes as possible to attend and support us in choosing not to drink and drive.

Western Canada High School’s annual gala fundraiser “Celebrate Western” is fast approaching on Saturday April 14th, 2012 and we are seeking talented students to be selected as featured performers for the event. Audition information and forms are available from any Fine Arts teacher or at the Main Office.

All audition applications must be in to the Main Office by the end of the school day on Friday February 24th. Please see Mr. Hagan in the band room should you have any questions regarding the audition process.

International Youth Summit - March 14 - 16, 2012

The Calgary Board of Education is hosting its first International Youth Summit at Forest Lawn High on the above dates. Students from all across Calgary will be participating as well as students from China and Macau.

The purpose of the Summit is to enhance students’ opportunities to develop international and intercultural awareness and skills in traditional and non-traditional learning settings. The Summit will challenge students to consider international careers and to examine leadership and global issues from different perspectives.

The theme of this year’s Summit is: Voices of our Elders (honouring, of course, the wisdom of the First Nations’ peoples). As a result, the Thursday of the Summit will take place at Blackfoot Crossing (Cluny) – a beautifully designed First Nations Cultural Complex southeast of Calgary just off the Trans-Canada highway. (transportation there will be provided)

Attending the Summit will be over 50 special guests and experts whose interests range from business and leadership to social justice, aboriginal issues and environment.

The cost of the Summit is $150.00 of which $93.00 will be covered by the Werklund Foundation. Total cost then, per student, is $57.00 which covers all sessions, workshops, transportation (Forest Lawn – Blackfoot Crossing and back), snacks and beverages. (if money is an issue, please do not let this stop you – we can talk and work something out) Students will be responsible for getting to and from Forest Lawn High School.

If you are interesting in participating in this terrific opportunity, please see me (Mr. Dilworth)in the Library at the earliest possible moment. Western Canada will be able to send 10 students to this Summit.

We are also looking for a student who could billet a pair of students from Macau. These are the students who will be participating in the Summit and in other activities especially organized for them. They would need billets from March 09 – 19.

Regional Speech Tournament

On Friday, February 10, Western hosted over 130 students from around the city in the ADSA Calgary Regional Speech Tournament. Dozens of volunteers made this event a great success! Western’s medalists were:

Alina Lakhani – gold (prose)
Maral Farrokh – silver (solo acting)
Alexander Kormann and Jessica Del Fierro – silver (duet acting)
Sujay Nagaraj – bronze (original oratory)

Qahir Haji, Fatemah Ramazani, and Julia Qin have also qualified for the provincial tournament on February 25.

World Speech Competition

Western student Julia Qin was part of Team Alberta at the Canadian National Speech Tournament in Winnipeg this past weekend. Julia did an amazing job and was selected as one of 6 students to represent Canada at the World Tournament in Brisbane, Australia during spring break. Congratulations, Julia!

The theme this year for the
Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) program is:

Get Up, Stand Up!

Young people who are chosen for their leadership potential attend an all expenses-paid camp to discuss leadership skills and to learn those skills through practice.

RYLA 2012 aims to:

Demonstrate Rotary's respect and concern for youth;
Provide an effective training experience for selected youth leaders;
Encourage leadership of youth by youth; and
Recognize publicly young people who are rendering service to their communities.
Empower the Youth Leaders to take action.

The goal for RYLA 2012 is to have 100 students attend this year’s high energy high impact program. RYLA 2012 will be held in Canmore, Alberta from May 24th – 27th, 2012.

APPLICATION INFORMATION IS AVAILABLE IN GUIDANCE. APPLICATION DEADLINE IS FEB. 24.

Candidates will:

Submit an application including a resume and an essay of approximately three hundred (300) words about “Leadership” such as “In my view, a good leader is someone who …”
Candidates should be encouraged to utilize the Rotary Four Way Test in their essay content;
Be prepared to attend an interview;
Know about Rotary and what we do (understand that this is a Rotary event)
Possess the following traits:

Leadership experience or potential (extra-curricular activities at school, community involvement, etc.)
Cooperative nature and willingness to participate in a group
Awareness of current events
Strong communication skills
Good performance in school
Enthusiasm for sharing new-found skills with others
Be in grade 10 or 11

Rotary Short Term Youth Exchange

Are you interested in travelling to Europe this summer? The Rotary Short Term Youth Exchange may be for you.

You will be paired up with a student of the same sex and roughly the same age in Europe (some other locations may also be available) in whose home you will spend 2 – 3 weeks.

In exchange that student will spend the same period of time in your home learning your customs and becoming acquainted with this area and your life.

You are not expected to learn another language as your paired student is expected to have some English skills, however you are encouraged to make an effort at the other language and in doing so become immersed in your paired students’ life and their culture.

Rotary acts only as the facilitator of the exchange to insure safety and compatibility. If you would like more details please see attached flyer and/or contact:

The Western Interact Club will be hosting a Talent Show in the Theatre, during lunchtime on February 13th, 14th, and 15th (finals). Admission will consist of a one dollar donation. All money collected will go to the Spread the Net Challenge in order to purchase bug nets to protect African children from malaria. 'Every 45 seconds a child in Africa dies from malaria'.

Interact Club has raised approximately $2,500.00 for Spread the Net, so far. However, in order to accomplish our goal of raising $15,000.00, we need your help. 1 NET. 10 BUCKS. SAVE LIVES.

RCMP Youth Camp

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be a police officer? Northwest Region Recruitment Unit of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in partnership with the RCMP Depot Training Academy in Regina is hosting our second annual youth camp for students in grade eleven and twelve. Thirty-two student’s from all over the prairie provinces and the territories will be selected to attend the youth camp held at Regina’s Training Academy(Depot) for one week, August 12 to 18, 2012. The selection will be based on student’s academic achievement, Canadian citizenship and interest in a career in policing. You will learn what it’s like to be a police officer in training through activities and observation of activities including , drill, driver simulator training, firearms, police officer scenarios, a tour of the training facility(Depot) and RCMP museum, and much more!

This is also a wonderful opportunity to interact with Police Officer’s from many different units within the RCMP, which will allow you to obtain a better understanding of what life would be like as a Police Officer with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police!

Shad Valley Program

Shad Valley is a life-transforming, four week summer enrichment and leadership program for students who are:

· Talented, motivated, engaged

· Interested in their future and creating new opportunities and possibilities for themselves

· Passionate about making a difference and having an impact in the world

· High academic achievement, with a passion for innovation (in math, sciences, engineering,

business, technology or elsewhere)

· Creative and entrepreneurial minds

· Involvement in their school and community

· Leadership abilities and the desire to be part of a collaborative, high performance team

The program takes place from July 1-July 27 at one of ten university campuses across the country:

· Carleton University, Dalhousie University, Lakehead University, Université Laval, McMaster University, Memorial University of Newfoundland, Queen’s University, University of British Columbia, University of New Brunswick, University of Waterloo

The program is an incredible opportunity for students to collaborate with like-minded peers from across the country, building life-long friendships with some of the brightest and most accomplished youth in Canada. The program involves:

· Guest lectures (from professors, engineers, doctors, policy makers, business executives etc.)

· Interactive workshops, projects and challenges

· Recreation (rock climbing, swing dancing, sports etc.) and local trips (camping, whale watching etc.)

· Potential internships with major Canadian companies (RIM, Xerox, IBM, RBC, TD Bank)

· Eligibility for exclusive Shad Valley scholarships at major Canadian Universities

While there is a cost to the program, it is a priority for us to make the program financially accessible, and there are excellent scholarships, bursaries and travel bursaries available. It is free to apply.

Western Canada Staff and Students Amble with Angus

On the morning of Dec. 16th students and staff from our cross- country team participated in the 5k fun run to raise funds for the Calgary Food Bank.

They raised an incredible $1000.00 for the Calgary Food Bank. Another example of our students and staff helping out our community at large.

IB Reunion Update

The annual IB reunion will NOT be held on the usual date (last Friday before the winter break) due to its status as a non-instructional day. Staff look forward to seeing IB diploma graduates and partial IB graduates at a reunion in the spring (tentative date April 27th).
