Paul Pierce Needs His Rest

Marc Spears lays out a very good case for reducing Paul Pierce's minutes this season:

During six April games, Pierce averaged 34 minutes, shot 50.5 percent from the field, and made 44.1 percent of his 3-pointers.

During 15 games in March, he averaged 39 minutes, shot 47.1 percent from the field, and 37.5 percent from 3-point range.

During 12 games in February, he averaged 41 minutes, shot 46.5 percent from the field, and 30.8 percent from 3-point range.

During 15 games in January, he averaged 35 minutes, shot 49.3 percent from the field, and 46.3 percent from 3-point range.

It's simple. Fewer minutes = higher shooting percentages. But unless Danny signs a capable back-up (No - JR Giddens and/or Bill Walker should NOT be considered to fill that void next season), Doc will be forced to stick with Paul.

Spears also lists a bunch of small forwards available for the $1.9 biannual exception or even less (I'm doing Danny a favor and eliminating a few):

I couldn't find any other reports of whom they Celtics might be targeting. That could change if/when the Boston Herald updates its web site. If I can drag my ass out of bed and update this site by 10:30am on Sunday, the freakin' Herald should be able to get their Celtics articles posted.

Tim Buckley of the Desert News makes the case for Utah to sign Glen Davis:

If the Jazz don't match the four-year, $32 million offer sheet backup power forward Paul Millsap signed Friday with Portland, they have at least one viable alternate option.

He's Boston Celtics restricted free agent power forward Glen "Big Baby" Davis, and he'd come to Utah without whining about big bucks.

Davis, a Louisiana State product, probably could be had for midlevel-exception money — a multiyear deal starting at $5.854 million, which is about $6 million less than Millsap would cost Utah next season.

"Right now, the Knicks are not relevant," said a prominent player agent with a few high-profile clients in the free agent class of 2010. "Only the media in New York keeps them relevant. The Knicks are trying to do the right thing but they've got a long way to go."

Villanueva, Bosh race to 50K on Twitter

I'll admit it... I'm getting to be a bit of a twitter addict. I know some of you are too *cough* *cough* KWAPT *cough*.

So I'm thoroughly enjoying Chris Bosh and Charlie Villanueva racing to 50,000 followers. Here's Charlie to explain things:

How awesome would it be to see Chris Bosh doing that? Imagine... Bosh doing the "Single Ladies" dance on You Tube... but LeBron not wanting us to see him getting dunked on. I think Bosh wins... because some self-deprecating humor is endearing. Hey 'Bron 'Bron... take some notes here before you completely tarnish your star. Maybe Nike should too... before their meal ticket loses his appeal.

Here's the genius of what these guys are doing. They're marketing themselves as real human beings. It's a great insight into the personal lives of these NBA players. It's access like we've never had as fans... and they can still control their message. They can interact... and on their own terms.

Report: Celtics Eyeing Jamario Moon

Buried inside Mark Murphy's article on Grant Hill was this tidbit about Jamario Moon:

There still are free agents who interest them - notably restricted free agent Jamario Moon, a younger player in the Hill mold. But the Celtics can’t afford Moon unless his price significantly drops.

Their best shot at anyone with a straight-up offer is the biannual exception.

A league source said yesterday the Celtics have investigated sign-and-trade possibilities with other teams - a scenario that could theoretically work in a move for Moon, who finished last season with Miami. The Celts also have expiring contracts of varying sizes to offer.

Make it happen Danny. We'd love to see Moon flying off the Celtics bench.

For those unfamiliar with this game, here's a scouting report:

An outstanding leaper who was invited to the dunk contest, Moon is dangerous in transition and on alley-oop plays in the half court. He's also a decent midrange shooter (41.1 percent on long 2s last year) and foul shooter, so opponents have to play him for that.

They can close out hard, though, because Moon is a weak ball handler who rarely drives off the dribble. This did help keep his turnover rate quite low, however. Also, Moon fell in love with the J at times and would launch ill-advised tries early in the shot clock.

Defensively, Moon is still figuring out what he's doing but is a strong one-on-one defender. Because of his length he's great at stealing entry passes thrown by his own man, and he can play power forward in smallball arrangements (though, at 205 pounds, not in traditional lineups).

C's have the best summer league shooter

The best shooter in summer league history was wearing a Celtics jersey this year. His name is Chris Lofton. He's also a cancer survivor.

Lofton, the former Southeastern Conference Player of the Year (2007) from Tennessee, set an Orlando Pro Summer League record for most 3-pointers made (15 of 25), despite averaging just 16 minutes in reserve for the Boston Celtics.

At 6-2, 200 pounds, Lofton is a too-short shooting guard who is battling to carve a spot in the NBA, showing the kind of determination that marked his senior year in college when he played through radiation treatments following a diagnosis of testicular cancer.

So he's tough. He's a survivor. He's a dead-eye shooter who, as the article says, has had games where he's hit 17 and 13 three pointers (overseas). The C's already have Eddie House, so there's very little chance the C's take a shot at another undersized specialist... but maybe this guy can turn his success with the C's summer league team into success with another NBA squad. He's a guy worth rooting for.

On Saturday, Nike is putting out a "Bulls vs. Celtics" retro Air Jordan pack that is an absolute must-have if you're a sneaker head. Dime Magazine has the details

As part of the larger Jordan 60+ series that’s been honoring all the games in which the G.O.A.T. scored 60 points or more, this set dates back to April 20, 1986 when MJ dropped 63 on Larry Bird and the Celtics.

The whole package is amazing. The box resembles the old Boston Garden’s parquet floor, and with two pairs - one in Bulls’ red and the other in Celtics’ green - you can’t go wrong.

The look isn't for everyone, but I dig it. I want it just for the box. I don't know what it's gonna cost... but because it's a special edition Nike set, it won't be cheap. That is... it won't be cheap unless Nike sends me a set to, ahem, "test drive."
