There has been a drastic increase in the price of cotton as most of you will notice when you purchase fabric. The largest grower of cotton is China, second is India followed by the United States. The price is determined by supply and demand

The price of cotton has gone up from 62 cents per pound to $1.65 per pound. China and India are not exporting cotton anymore
and the world's need for cotton has grown. When a shortage occurs, the price will go up (Fab Shop News Dec. 2010). Another problem is the people speculating in cotton.

When that happens and supply does not equal demand the price will go up because the speculators want to drive that price up regardless of what those of us who sell and buy the produce can afford. Another issue is that eighty percent of the cotton produced in the United States is exported as we no longer have the mills here as we did years ago to produce the finished goods.

As with the price of gasoline we as shopowner's do not know when this increase will level off and price increases will end.
I have been expecting this increase for almost a year but am shocked at the rates expected. We had already suffered hikes when the Japanese flooded our markets with Designer Cottons that averaged $10.00 to the wholesaler last year. Where is our Cotton? Good ole USA Cotton? I, Karyn Redwolf, am committed to buying all goods and services from local privately owned businesses and am STRONGLY recommending that you do the same.

I realize that at the moment it seems that you are getting more for your money at a Discount Store, but long term you are not. Handmade Crafts, Clothing, Decor and Local Business people will provide you with a longer lasting quality product and generally offer wonderful inventive ideas to keep you coming back. These Folks are struggling too in this economy. If we don't support them whole heartedly right now - they will vanish.

We will be enslaved to the prices of Finished Products provided by imports at rates we can't imagine. Cotton is a perfect example. Jeans - currently $30 a pair will now be near $100.00, $40-60 for a Hanes type T-shirt at WalMart.

These are serious issues that you the consumer can change.

Demand USA cotton.

Support local businesses, Craft and Tradesmen.

Shop American owned and made online

Even Etsy can provide local Artisans, Seamstresses, Craftsmen.

Write - email your local Representatives asking them to increase farming in the USA - limit imports, suspend exports. Demand that we Take care of USA first. Aid to other countries after are needs are met.

You can start now, by visiting my friend's on-line store, sign-up for her newsletters, take advantage of her wonderful sales. Laura always has the best Fresh Designers on her shelves. And you won't beat her customer service. She has a new shipment of Southwestern Fabric!
Laura Lee Mucci - Owner of Cowgirl-Up Quilts; Benson, AZ.
Buddy! We Are Broke!

hmmmmm.....

That is probably what I find most disturbing with Obama's "Low Keyed" Announcement for 2012 Candidacy, that he truly believes in spite of the poles and his sad track record, He Will be re-elected. Will he? Gives one pause doesn't it? During his Super Bowl interview he stated that the people are not displeased with him or hate him, they are angry or displeased with the Office. He feels they are 2 separate entities. Amazing coping strategy isn't it? I am fairly sure voters were voting specifically for him not the idea of him.

Mara Liasson (NPR) made the most intelligent observations I've yet to hear. At this time "he has just "released" the Fund Raisers, He needs to raise 1 Billion Dollars Last election he raised 3/4 of a Billion". this is a huge boon for him and the Democratic Party. All their attention as well as funds can be carefully directed at obtaining Volunteers in the Grassroots sector. It is their participation and support that his campaign shall ride on. 1 Billion dollars to campaign for the Presidency.

Because the Republicans are so far behind, they don't have a candidate nor even a front runner. This means that all of the monies raised for the Republican Nomination will primarily be used for the Primary Elections vs. the Big One. Very scary. Sure there are lots of names on the wind. Yes, Tim Pawlently announced his candidacy, however, in a very candid interview with FoxNews he said, That he was Creating a Fact Finding Group: in other words sticking a toe in the water to see if he even has a shot. Donald Trump seems to be most committed to declaring. And even I, have to admit that I agree with some of him strong arm international Financial views. And I believe he would balance the budget... pronto... but at what cost? There is much debate as to whether the USA should be run like a corporation or not. I know I am not qualified to answer that. Though it seems that in part extraordinary corporation applications would benefit the country right now. We Are Broke!

Back to point, I am still naive enough to be stunned that a candidate that has not met 1 goal or promise, has made decisions that seriously hurt our wonderful country thinks we want him in office still. Do We? Do we really want Obama in office for another 4? Are we going to witness or participate in another election where the populous feels they are choosing the lesser of two evils? Will he win simply because people prefer the devil they know than the one they don't? That is just not good enough. Aren't we better than this game?

Politics is a vicious world. Wonderful Candidates are harried, bullied right out of thinking to run. With the aide of smear campaigns fueled by the press, who needs it? Can't blame them for withdrawing. Which is in fact the cause of Colin Powell leaving public office. Though on the other hand, if they can't handle the Press and pressure before they are in office - How will they handle the Official Demands a Presidency carries? Powell declared that he and his family were over due for a time of calm and privacy in their family life. That his entire family had been in the public eye all his adult life, it was family time. Bravo. And what a loss for the citizens.

Sarah Palin. I was interested in Sarah until the BP oil spill. Her commentaries were dead on. Exactly what and how I wanted my President to respond nationally and Globally. I was inspired to read her biography, Going Rogue. I have a lot of respect for Sarah Palin. I feel she has what it takes along with the experience, and compassion for our people to be a Great President. I also will be surprised if she runs. 1 Billion dollars. If you were Sarah would you take your money, protect your family, and call it day? Or would you rise up to yet another challenge and attack from all sides to win the coveted First Woman President of the United States? Not long ago I would have said she was going for gold as only she knows how.

Then I remember the mess the country is in. The national debt is unthinkable. How many folks will suffer for this Debt? What Candidate wants to take that on? 'Thank You for electing me - and now we have no money so life as you knew it is over....' Ugly scenario no matter how real. And It Is REAL. We Are Broke.

Every day I hear someone arguing about budget cuts and benefits. I am so bewildered by it. You would have to live under a rock to not understand that the USA has no money. We are broke. The Dollar's worth is dropping like a meteor. Costs across the board are increasing.

No country wants our bonds nor to lend us more... We run the USA on borrowed money. Loans. We are broke. They are seriously discussing closing shop in D.C. the government shuts down, and no one actually knows what that will look like. Yes, there are many theories and suppositions. There is no current history to compare too. While it is rumored that there is a protocol for this action....... Who really knows? What exactly happens when the Government shuts down? How do we restart it? I have been chewing on the ramifications for days....

Republicans, Tea Party People, Somebody!!! Did you hear? Obama declared. Time is short... Please, please step up and Check this action. Announce a bid for the nomination - Accept the Challenge. Please.
We Can Send New Updates or Feeds to Your eMailed

<link href="http://theredwolfsden.blogspot.com/2011/04/obama-thinks-he-can-do-it-again-buddy.html" rel="alternate" title="Obama Thinks He Can Do It Again?!! 10 a.m. EST Wednesday. The U.S. government is having its regular auction of U.S. Treasury notes. Here we go again begging to the world with our tin cup. Only this time the world says, “No. We aren’t going to buy any more U.S. I.O.U.s.”
3 p.m. EST Sunday. When the Asian markets open, we see a meltdown. The Asian markets are down 5 percent, then 6 percent then 7 percent in an all out free-fall. It touches off an avalanche of selling and markets around the world go into independent free-falls.
3 p.m. EST Sunday. Global currencies start to slip and are also in free fall. Gold prices rise by $300 to $400 dollars an ounce. Silver and palladium are also up as global investors convert, to put everything they have into precious metals.
9:30 a.m. EST Monday. The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) opens and within minutes circuit breakers around the world pop under a deluge of market orders.
9:50 a.m. EST Monday. The NYSE is advised of the liquidity problems and the market shuts down. Markets around the world react with volatility in a strong down trend. Everyone starts selling bonds to raise capital, but there are few buyers. Prices plunge; yields rise.
10:10 a.m. EST Monday. Markets around the world react to the close of the NYSE with volatility in a strong down trend.
10:45 a.m. EST Monday. Several countries in Europe announce they have raised interest rates by 3 or 4 percent to make their own bonds attractive to buyers. In response, other global markets become very nervous and even less stable.
9:30 a.m. EST Tuesday. The NYSE is unable to open due to the quantity of sell orders jamming the systems.
9:45 a.m. EST Tuesday. The Federal Reserve calls an emergency meeting. The United States needs liquidity and must compete for it.
10:45 a.m. EST Tuesday. The Federal Reserve announces a hike in interest rates.
11:15 a.m. EST Tuesday. Global markets don’t like the hike in U.S. interest rates, but respond by seeking some type of footing for the short term.
11:30 a.m. EST Tuesday. The NYSE finally manages to open two hours after the opening bell. Global markets have gapped down 6 to 7 percent from Friday’s close.
12:05 p.m. EST Tuesday. Traders believe the worst is behind them.
Tuesday afternoon through Friday morning. The dollar rallies. Markets find new levels. Traders around the world are walking on eggshells and having a hard time sleeping. Global currencies are still in free fall. Gold prices continue to rise along with other precious metals as more buyers come in.
2 p.m. EST Friday. In spite of the hike in interest rates, the U.S. dollar continues to fall as global confidence continues to erode.
8 a.m. EST Saturday. The Fed reconvenes.
3 p.m. EST Sunday. The Fed announces a second interest rate hike in as many weeks. At Asian open China gets first crack at the higher yield bonds.
3:01 p.m. EST Sunday. Currency markets instantly respond as bank interest rates in Western Europe are hiked simultaneously with the U.S., but there are no buyers.
9:30 a.m. EST Monday. At the NYSE bell all hell is unleashed. Traders around the world become net sellers of equities, bonds, and western currencies. Everyone wants out at the same time. The world markets are thrown into chaos. Panic and confusion sweep the globe and all markets are in free fall.
9:42 a.m. EST Monday. Everything is jammed as the volume of selling off all distributed equities in all the global markets becomes overwhelming. The markets around the world seize up. Trading ceases.
10:11 a.m. EST Monday. On the NYSE floor, someone turns up the volume on CNN and people slowly gather around the screen to watch videos of bodies falling out of exchange headquarters in Tokyo, Singapore, Hong Kong, London, Frankfurt, Paris and Bucharest. Someone turns the sound off, but the videos keep playing.
10:28 a.m. EST Monday. On the NYSE floor, traders start to pick up their tickets. Every hand is shaking. Throughout the day shocked traders wander out of the building. Some find their way home. Others are never heard from again. Others begin to obsess about how to recoup their losses if and when the market reopens.
12:01 a.m. EST Tuesday. The IMF convenes with G20 leaders to discuss a solution to the paralyzed markets. They realize the only way to unfreeze the markets is to do a total restructure of all westernized debt in one fell swoop. This will require a complete realignment of currencies as it will likely include massive work-outs by debtor nations. The work outs will mandate that all countries submit to terms set out by a new global authority that is quickly being formed.
6 a.m. EST Tuesday. A spokeswoman for the IMF/G20 coalition holds a news conference before the New York Exchange opens. The conference is simulcast around the world in multiple languages. She assures viewers that everything is under control and that the IMF/G20 coalition will be overseeing an economic reset that will transpire in an orderly manner. She encourages people to remain calm, adding that while the temporary halt in exchange trading is awkward, everybody’s money is safe and there is no need to panic.
3:15 p.m. EST Tuesday. Around the country, panic spreads. Bank runs are reported. Looting spreads from banks and guns shops to grocery stores and supply stores. Riot squads are deployed. The National Guard is called in. Police start recording fatalities. People start firing back at the police.
Hourly updates are broadcast from the White House. The President holds a daily live news conference for selected media representatives, but takes no questions.
6:09 a.m. EST Tuesday. The IMF/G20 coalition holds a news conference that is simultaneously webcast in multiple languages. As a panel, the IMF/G20 coalition members outline the plan to restructure the global economy. They announce the establishment of a new Global Unification Exchange System (GUES) and mandate that all nations cease printing national currencies. It’s a global town hall.
11:10 a.m. EST Wednesday. The newly formed grassroots Coalition for Political Reform/USA (CPR/USA) launches a coordinated internet campaign to demand changes in America political system, specifically the elimination the Electoral College and the creation of a secure online voting system which will ensure one person, one vote and be run by volunteers across the nation.

Pretty scary stuff. Obviously, this is all conjecture. Still, it contains some possibilities that need to be considered as the U.S. dollar continues to weaken.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I read this time line a few weeks back - before Japan. When they were reporting on Japan a few things were either confirmed or revealed with regard to the USA debt. We now know that China holds the bonds to the largest part of it, Japan is second, Brazil the fourth..... It worries me for if they are in need, and they are, they have the ability to call in their loans or cash in their bonds. We don't have the money to honor them. What would satisfy their demands? Real Estate? Products? Technology that has kept us safe or 1 step ahead or positioned the USA to be a super power? It worries me... because we have no money, we are bankrupt, we keep borrowing money to pay daily bills to keep going AND this week Some countries are opting out or have decided not to loan us money or buy our bonds. We are now a major risk. In other words, things that Vickers calls out have come into fruition. Its happening now! Greenburg? Greenburg is yelling to media DUCK!!! We are going down.... it has my attention. I hope it gets yours.
You Bet!
Kindle Readers, eReaders, the next Big Thing? Many are counting on it. Today more and more hard prints are disappearing. More and more newspapers and magazines are offering a Kindle version now.
When the laptop revolution began, those companies with a little foresight began offering a Digital or Online version or subscription to their product. Thus allowing you the consumer to read your NY Times or something "blue" at your convenience, on your PC, perhaps concealed in another window while at work or school, even in another boring tedious meeting... right? (read on to learn how this tool can help Artists & Crafters)
But the world of Technology is fluid. Ever changing. So fast that the reality is when a piece of hardware hits the shelves at Circuit City, Best Buy, CompUSA the technology used to operate the devise is a dinosaur. Amazing.
That being said there are some downfalls or rather inconveniences of using your PC or Laptop to read let's say, the NY Times, or how about War & Peace? And the clever geniuses at Kindle understood that the way of analog print was failing. Introducing The Kindle. Kindle is a Dedicated tool to read anything that can be put into the file format it recognizes. .pdf is most common. To really simplify it a Kindle is an electronic book that comes with its own place marker - book marks, highlighters, the ability to read table of contents and indexes or go to specific pages with a button click.
They are compact and the new generations allow you to change everything to customise this baby to your liking. Background lighting, Font sizes and types, some even color! wow. Fast page turning for the speed readers out there. They hold staggering amounts of data - or in other words Libraries. And you choose what you want to read.
Today you can subscribe to most Newspapers and Magazines and they are delivered to your Kindle electronically over the Internet. Different models connect, wirelessly, and down load at different rates. Save what you want, discard the rest.
Now there is many applications for your Kindles - such as "notepad", yes it is what it says. Maps as in Road Atlas of the Country or the World, textbooks, DIY, Publishing Tools, cookbooks. It is endless and growing fast. For us Artists and Crafters, there are volumes of DIY books - patterns, tutorials available instantly. Prices range from free to several hundred dollars for Medical Reference Materials
If you are going to a group class setting, Or a vacation where you can craft - print out the patterns, pack them with the Kindle in your bag - the Directions are safe in the Kindle - if by chance you may have deleted them - no problem down load again... and you can have your favorite reading material or more to entertain you on the bus, commuter rail, airplane.
I am barely scratching their capabilities but i can say that once you are familiar with it you will love it, and wish you had bought one sooner.
The icing on the cake is that the software comes in many versions and can be run on various platforms, eliminating the need to buy a Kindle if you chose not too. At this time I, myself, run Kindle on my Laptop - down load to it, read and print from it. I also incur costs of downloading as well as the purchase. For me at this time it is the right choice.
Want to know more or purchase a Kindle? visit: http://bit.ly/iggUZ7 pick a color! pick a screen size, pick a down load speed, or a capacity.... amazing
Handmade DIYer's will enjoy the ease, convenience, portability, lack of use of electricty (very very efficient) and paper. Kindles - oh Yeah!!
Would you like to Create your own designs, or customize ones you own? Shrink or Enlarge? Make an Applique or Patch? Have you wanted to learn to more about Digitizing Machine Embroidery Designs?
There is an interesting selection of Embroidery Machine Software on the market. Each one seems so different from the others. Some are seem very complicated at first glance. Some are very user friendly. I find that the easier 1 is to use the more limited it is. And, those Software packages generally have components.
We bought my 1st Embroidery Machine 1 1/2 years ago, almost on impulse.....(Software Link is in this article)
 We had just built a brand new house, complete with new furniture. In another blog i will tell you of our amazing transition of forced early retirement - combining a 20 year New England Farm & Stable and a 3000 sq ft Palm Springs to die for home to a 3.6 acre 1000 sq ft desert ranch/home. We shed ourselves of so many things - and we starting @ ground zero. A Blank Canvas.
While appointing the new home I found a bedroom linen ensemble that i wanted more than i have ever wanted anything. It was so beautiful. The Queen size spread was over $2,000. The entire set was close to $9k. Yes, $9k for a bedspread sheets and curtains. My sense of value would not allow that. And i had left both sewing machines in Massachusetts. I began scouring the Internet for the right machine for me.
30 year ago i was fortunate enough to have a hi-end just released Viking and i loved that machine. I made clothes for everyone, down vests and jackets, christening gowns and on and on. This time i had a strict budget and wanted the big bang for the buck.
Our home is 60 mi. from a sewing store other than the neighborhood Walmart - not a super center, a neighbor hood. 1 Singer, 1 Brother, 1 Singer Surger..
After 2 weeks of research i was stymied. I called a Sewing Center in Tucson. I asked the lady on the phone which of the 2 machines i had narrowed it down to would she recommend and why? She asked me why I would even consider either of them? She did her job well for we went to the store that week.
I was totally awed by the sewing machines in the world today. I had no idea. Not a clue. My old Kenmore with its cogs was great! It made everything we needed. My brother had seen an ad on QVC television and bought for me the Euro-pro Silk & Denim, because it was very heavy duty and had the ability to sew through the leather harness and saddlery, thick nylon webbing I was always repairing in the barn, with 8-15 lesson and Show Horses.
I had no idea what a computerized machine was. What a Dongel, or is it Dongle, is? What is the difference between a Quilting Machine and an Embroidery Machine?
I immediately walked over to the new Vikings and was stunned. Wandered towards the new Brother, not sold in Walmarts!! The functions and capabilities were incredible. The Sticker shock was just that, Shocking. $5-12 thousand dollars for a sewing machine? And i wanted a bedpread. LOL. The clerk began her demos, I was like a Deer in headlights, mesmerized. I don;t know what she said to me. I do remember seeing the most beautiful piece of embroidery i had ever seen. Remarked as such. MY husband said "What machine does that?"
This Pfaff Creative Vision. And today it is on sale for the new model is being released next week. Its $3 thousand off regular retail but, if you buy it today we will upgrade it to the new model - its a software upgrade, and include the bags and carts and various other attachments. If you want to make that design you love you will need this hoop, the largest on the market there is and i will give you a 15% discount with a $79 membership to our Sewing club. It comes with 40 hrs of free classroom training for your machine and many other classes and groups activities, discounts in the store. All this will come to a little under $9k - or the cost of my bedroom linens, that i have yet to make! My Darling husband says - Sounds good - we will take it - Now - pack it up."
My 40 hrs consisted of her telling me what each item was as she checked it off in the packing list. There was no manual. But, there was book showing me all kinds of items, projects, and more embroidery designs - not built in. The Software in the machine does not let you actually edit a design. Yes, you can change thread colors. The machine can let you increase/decrease by 20% but if you don't know what you are doing the stitch density is also altered creating a nasty mess.
For the most part the Software that came on the disk was a Thread Organizer, A Font Designer, The collection of built in designs and a file organizer, not unlike anyone would find for photography. In a nutshell, it was the basic software you needed to run and communicate with your machine. Just like buying a printer or camera. Low end, Low functions photo editor. The Software designed for theses machines is now called 5D - it was 4D at the time. It is a component collection. You buy a piece per application so to speak. The entire Suite cost as much as the machine, starting Software piece you are looking at another $2k. WOW.
I started to teach myself how to use this beauty - and scoured the Internet for information - a manual (there isn't one) and Digitizing software that was compatible that i could afford. I learned so m any new terms and file extensions i.e. HUS, XXX, PCD, VIP, VIP3, SEW, ART, ART3 and on it went. My Pfaff CV and I are now in love. And I know what Stabilizers are and how/when to use them. I know what a Dongle is!!
And i know what is the best software to buy under different conditions. There are 2 big names that one can use for free - online - i found them confusing and time consuming as the digitizing process eats up data transfer.
Most software will let you download demo or trial versions. 1 or 2 are fully functional but in general they won't let you save the design or send it to your machine. I downloaded several packages a test drove them all. And, like everything else i found pros and cons with each package, until i found, and bought Embird. That is my favorite software. I love it. Then, 5 months after I found Embird I found SophieSew a fully functional FREE Digitizing Software Package with Tutorials and support, some free designs.
If you have ever worked with Paintbrush or Microsoft Paint you can use this software.
Carlos Mandell has done a nice job creating this software for us!
I will give you the link to his page and the Downloads - and ask that you please follow me, this blog - "I Like" Redwolf's Den Facebook - or follow me on Twitter to get more freebies - Let me know what you think of the Software.
Ever seen a Giant Desert Centipede? The 1st one we saw was over 10 in long - no lie - and rounder than a 25 cent piece. Not as large as a 1/2 dollar. Regardless i took the garden loppers to it. Cut it in half it still came at me in full charge! I proceeded to sushi the prehistoric monster. Bits of white meat everywhere, it's pincers snapping away, YUCK. By the end of last season i was merely stomping on them and sweeping them off the patio. There are some very nasty spiders here. More prolific and venomous than the snakes. The hens will eat them joyfully.
Yesterday morning, my dearest wheeled into the bedroom doorway and whispered "Hey beautiful, guess what? The chickens are loose..." Ahhhhhhh Adrenaline over dose Now! Heart racing, blood pressure soaring... My first thought was to the where abouts of Ellie, our Aussie Blue Healer - Border Collie mix. Those hens are her charge. Her obsession. she counts them several times an hour. Studies their behaviors for hours. Can open the doors to their egg boxes (she learned that day 1 watching me). Our Lab, Kachina, loves to chase anything that moves. But she is in it for the joy of running. Ellie is on duty, the chase and the kill, she lives for it. Merely killing a snake is not enough for her. Once dead she totes off her kills and shreds them into tiny bits. Aussie cattle dogs were bred to herd cattle and take down 2000 lb. Bulls. They are fearless and operate in stealth mode. No barking. Intense, focused, lethal.
We have had countless discussions on releasing the hens, building a run for the hens, penning the dogs, chaining the dogs, electrocuting the dogs... never agreeing on a method, or time, always agreeing the chickens need to be free during the day. Caged for protection at night.
Yes, the Hens were loose. For he had simply opened the door and let them out. He was really having fun with them, before coming to wake me and the Killer Hound from hell. It's was not fair that he did not warn me, yet it was a good thing for my protective instincts kept putting it off. The time had come to free the hens so i had to deal with it. To train the dogs to leave the birds alone. Get it into their protective herding brains that hens roaming the yard is a good thing and OK with Mom and Dad. I bound out of bed, muttering, cursing, shaking, still sleep blind hunting for glasses, pants, and boots, jacket.
The dog was at my feet, on the bed as usual. The other 3 dogs were not impressed with the hens cautiously strutting in the yard. in fact the older two came in the house, retreated to their own beds. But Ellie sensed my panic and reacted accordingly.
I was able to leash her before the door opened. Once we were all out i gave the leash to John so i was free to get feed to the birds. Ellie turned inside out, pulling him around in the wheel chair hell bent to get the chickens. Kachina barking, Game on!! Me still cursing.
Finally i was able to sit in my chair on the patio hauling on the leash sometimes with two hands until Ellie settled. Her birds were loose and that was not cool. There we sat for a good 20-30 mins with her whining and drooling. Eventually she sat down on her own and began to relax. We spent some time just like that, sitting watching the hens, stroking the dog, reassuring her. Enter the wild quail.
We took the dogs into the house. John stayed in there with them. I went back out with coffee, fianally, to watch the quail i have been nurturing for almost 2 years. Being ever selective to provide food and water without increasing their dependency on humans.
We have wild Scallies and Gambles. They have mixed flocks for protection. Have grown from 3-4 birds to a flock of over 50 consistantly. The coyotes take their share, and the numbers change seasonally. We have had well over 100 here.
Once quite, the quail came to scratch with the hens. I was enthralled with the interactions. The hens guarded their coop door aggressively, but otherwise acted happy to have guests.
All of a sudden everyone ran for cover, chirping, alarming away. The bushes rustled with activity. A good thousand feet overhead a pair of hawks were gliding on the winds. So far up, a good mile south. None the less, they were spotted by a Quail Scout, who sounded the alarm and sent everyone into safety.
Our hens were in their coop in a flash. All day i marveled that the drooling snarling death machine was of no concern - but silent Death from Above, a mile off, that was a different, serious matter. Who knew Quail were so alert? Who knew Chickens spoke Quail?
This morning I walked Ellie on her leash as the hens and quail enjoyed their Freedom! It's going to take a long time to get her to comply and be comfortable. Hopefully, my shoulders and hands will hold up!
How does that song go? "Life on the Ranch kind of laid back... nothing an ol' country gal can't hack....." what a load of BS!!
I don't. Ever. But right now 50 miles east of Tucson, AZ at 9 am it is 19 degrees F. Last week we were enjoying morning coffee at 70 degrees.
Before coffee this morning, I was removing ice from the Chickens water bowls. I had placed them below ground level in pits the hens had dug themselves. It helped. There was only an inch ice vs. a solid block.
Oh the memories of my Stable in Massachusetts - hours upon hours of ice removal from every surface, every container.
This year's storms in the east have broken all records set some not too long ago. A few years back we had the highest snowfalls in recorded history in Massachusetts, most of New England.
I, owning the Riding Stable, had an F-250 with an 8 ft plow, and a John Deere 318 with a 4 ft. plow. All areas had to be cleared for safety and liability. Snow left on the ground turns to ice. That season we had 28 storms. 25 i had to plow.
We had a Super system complete with radios to control traffic as we cleared all our elderly neighbors drives and the Riding Arenas, Parking lots. Sometimes it was fun. But mostly that year i remember finally finishing a storm. Undressing, all 4 sets of sweat soaked Cuddl-Duds in the washer - and before the dryer had finished a NEW storm was in top of us.
The kids and I spread by hand 2 Tons of Rock Salt and 8 tons of Sand.
That year i broke 2 vertebrae in my neck plowing. That was the season i firmly committed to leaving New England.
I am so grateful. 19 Degrees in Dragoon AZ is AWESOME
I have a new line I am about to debut. I put hours of mind work, then research into a new product before I create it. It includes knowing my target market, what is Hot, What the Seasons colors are, and what makes me different - desirable - not like something everyone else has.. more often than not I am copied. That is always a good thing. I see it as a compliment. My husband doesn't, until I point out to him that those that are copying me are not using Quality Stock. I refuse to compromise on my materials. The difference between a Crafter and an Artist.
Early Saturday i ran into a shop that carries items i can use - sometimes. I found 2 pieces that i wanted - 1 i had been looking for at the right price point for quite some time. The Shopkeeper was very busy and i was in a deep line when the phone rang. I took the call and returned home immediately, placing the items back on the shelf.
My thinking was that i would be back on Monday morning - with more time and more cash - as i had a bakery delivery early Monday.
When i returned the items were gone. 1 was an entire bolt of fabric, over 10 yds. GONE.
i was very disappointed to say the least.
Lesson 1: Maintain a working monthly budget. Know how much you have to spend on supplies at all times. That needs to be divided into repeat items or replenishing; and money for New Items for Growth.
Lesson 2: 10 minutes in line will is sometimes the best time you can spend.
I should have waited.
Growth is a wonderful thing!
A little about turquoise:
There is many forms and shades of turquoise out there today. Some very beautiful solid pieces are coming from other countries. But limited solid pieces are being mined in the USA - and a large portion of what is available is stabilized.
Stabilizing turquoise uses heat and polymers, small bits or dust from cutting or mining.
This picture is some my Turquoise stock, shows a collection of Genuine Turquoise from the Southwest except for the square bright blue, which is from China, BUT not Stabilized, dyed or altered by heat or chemicals in anyway. Colors run from a pale blue to forest green. Graining, streaks, or marbling are a way of identifying and grading the quality of turquoise.
Does this look Familiar? It should. It's often called White Turquoise or Buffalo Stone. But in truth it is Howlite, or, even inappropriately Magnesite. It is the stone used to fake turquoise...
Today you will find dyed Howlite or also called Magnesite in a rainbow of colors, being marketed as turquoise.
These 2 links are from a supplier, that I adore, that show examples of what i am talking about. These folks Always mark their products as what they are. But, they are the exception.
Turquoise color
http://www.silverenchantments.com/Beads/Turquoise/BD3634_magnesite-beads.html
Pumpkin Orange Color
http://www.silverenchantments.com/Beads/Turquoise/BD1551_6mm-orange-magnesite-beads_round.html
I really love some of the fantastic colors out there today. They offer a designer so many options, stimulate creativity.
Unfortunately the average buyer does not know the difference between Genuine Turquoise and Enhanced or Stabilized Turquoise. The problem comes to light in pricing a piece. 1 artist's prices are drastically lower than another's for a very similar piece at 1st glance.
The replicas, synthetics, enhanced stock are so wonderfully made, with attention to marbling as well as surface, weight that it is very easy to be fooled.
Sadly some artists, not just consumers, are fooled. Home Craft Artists or a percentage Cottage Industry artists, thinking that they "got a Great Deal!" and will be able to be highly competitive on the Retail Market unwittingly buy the "enhanced" product, price it accordingly, market it as Real Turquoise, and invariably only the color is Turquoise
I can see my ancestor's faces now as they are unearthing a gorgeous streak of turquoise that suddenly turns Pumpkin Orange?
Howlite and/or Magnesite is the greatest Turquoise hoax today! It is the predominate stone used to create fake or rather enhanced turquoise. The texture, weight is so like natural turquoise from many regions. With dyes, heat and other techniques any color Turquoise.
This is from Wikipedia, clearly depicting and substantiating all of the above:
Howlite is commonly used to make decorative objects such as small carvings or jewelry components. Because of its porous texture, howlite can be easily dyed to imitate other minerals, especially turquoise because of the superficial similarity of the veining patterns. The dyed howlite (or magnesite) is marketed as turquenite.<sup class="reference" id="cite_ref-Turquenite_7-1">[8]</sup> Howlite is also sold in its natural state, sometimes under the misleading trade names of "white turquoise" or "white buffalo turquoise," or the derived name "white buffalo stone."
I hope this post will help both consumers and artists when working in the Turquoise Industry. There is nothing wrong with using dyed stones - but there is a lot wrong with selling it as something it isn't and costing authentic artists sale
In the Southwest many native people's lively hoods stem from their work with Turquoise. As the saying goes.... Buyer be Ware! Seller be Fair!
When you see a $20 necklace next to a $200 necklace - Look Again.... Know what you are buying.
Walk In Beauty!Howlite is Beautiful naturally. I use it frequently in my pieces. I use natural white Howlite.
We Can Send New Updates or Feeds to Your eMailed
Hens
Every little anecdote, saying, cliche about Hen House with regards to women is true.
Being Coyote Clan you would think I would be ecstatic about the 70 odd Coyotes living here. I am not.
As man must have it the balance in the eco-system is out of line and the Coyotes are running in huge populations unchecked. Most people do not like them. Most ranchers shoot them. There is not enough money or manpower to relocate them. Not that we should – after all – this IS their home. This IS their original and natural habitat. It is us and our animals that are threatened because we eliminated their natural predators and the race to adapt is on.
We have identified 3 individual packs north, east, and south of our property boundaries. But, their paths do run through our land. Most have taken to skirting us, along our fence line mainly because of the dogs. You can believe our dogs give chase at astonishing speeds. The 4 strand barbed wire slows the dogs down just enough to give the Coyotes extra advantage of time that they certainly don’t need. Most of the Coyotes know that it will slow them too – giving our dogs the advantage so they chose to skirt the fence line.
Except for that one…. that one that just has to be a taunter, a pest. The one who strolls by slower never looking this way directly, stops to sniff at nothingness, causally glances about taking note of the dogs and their positions – if they do not respond he will in fact jump clearly, smoothly between two wires without touching either and stroll towards the back gate, a 14′ pole gate. Dogs give chase for sure then.
One of the Coyote games we have come to know so well is the Bait Game. A lone Coyote, usually one that is on the smaller slender side, will sit either inside or right immediately off our fence and woefully call to our dogs. The objective is to get the dogs over to her/him where the pack is laying in wait. It’s an effective game. The Coyotes have it honed well, and “steal away” with our pets for pure fun, or dominance or food. To eat them. If you can catch site of the entire pack you may see dogs running with them.
For the most part now though, the dogs splinter off and form their own wild dog packs. Late last fall we had a visit from such a pack. There were bolder and definitely more aggressive than the Coyotes. The pack was very close, about 100 ft off the house. The problem lay in that they were between my husband and our kennel where 3 of 4 of our girls were going crazy to give chase. The 4th was loose and she is feeble, older unable to protect herself from a pack. One. she would try to hold her own abut more would not be in her favor at all.
We probably would have ignored the wild dog pack if they had not charged at my husband. When he yelled at them in his deep booming voice all but one turned to leave the other sat down. He called for me to bring his rifle and again at the dog – the dog charged fully with intent even after the warning shots that flew past his head. He was promptly and effectively dispatched. He will not threaten the life of another man or dog or child for that matter. Even knowing that does not comfort my husband who cherishes every life form on this desert. To this day he still feels sad and as if he may be part of the problem not the solution.
You have the Divine Right to Protect yourself and your family. In this environment you must be prepared to take a life if yours is at stake or that of your family or livestock. It is the hierarchy or the way of the food chain here in the Southeastern Desert Country.
Tonight the Coyotes Songs are in the air as they have been all week following the moon. The dogs sleep in the house lighter than normal. They are always on duty. Now I carry a hand gun for personal protection whenever outside.
And, recently my husband bought be amazing Snake proof boots. After I killed the only Western Diamond Back Rattlesnake i have seen here,
It was at 2 in the monring and the dogs had it pinned beneath my truck, nosed close to the back door.
I did try to scare it off with the garden hose no to avail. On reflection the icy water may have hindered his ability to flee. when it moved under the jeep i ran over him a few times - our drive is of stone so that too was in vain. When he moved another 5 feet under my husbands very large truck i ran over him 12 times with the 3/4 ton truck. No Luck.
At last I used a hoe. Striking hard enough to raise sparks before i severed his head.
We really don't have snakes here. It was strange.
I did not want to kill it. But, my husband is disabled. He has endured 17 surgeries, 8 admissions, numerous partial amputations and finally a complete amputation of his left leg. he is restricted to a wheel-chair and/or a walker and is unable to protect himself from a surprise snake attack. Nor, would he survive a bite.
It is the way of the land here.
