WOW where did the time go? I guess I'll start with today and work my way back, and fret not I'll keep it short and sweet. Haha right!
So today's adventure involved Gavin and I lost in the woods. That's right LOST!!! With spring in the air and the foliage blooming we went for a hike in woods behind our house. The weather was perfect and everything started out on a good note. About 30 minutes into our walk we rounded a corner and stumbled upon five deer on a nearby hilltop. Further down the trial we embarked upon a handful of wild turkeys, and a couple of minutes later a good old garter snake (which I oddly left alone and didn't catch with my crocodile hunter-like reflexes). Apparently with the rapidly blooming foliage, and a bazillion fallen trees everywhere from the recent windstorm, we missed our turn and wandered way off the Agape Valley (that's where we live) property. We spent a great deal of time bushwhacking through some thick forest as well as drudging through some dense soaker-inducing marshes. What made it more difficult was the fact I had my camera hanging off one shoulder and Gavin firmly locked onto my other hand. I spent a great deal of time carrying and lifting him through some tumultuous terrain and I could see the exhaustion on his poor (and incredibly adorable) little face. It was a further challenge keeping sticks and branches from hitting him in the face or poking him in the eye. This made the ordeal a lot slower. He really never complained like one would expect...he is such a trooper! He did however about an hour in say how he was excited to get home and have some water so he'd feel better. At this point I made sure he was adequately hydrated as I used my sock to filter stream water like Bear Grillis on Man Vs Wild. Haha just kidding! I had a bottle of spring water in my pocket to quench our thirst. Finally an hour and a half into the hike we climbed a massive (well by then it was massive) hill and encountered civilization. Whew! What a relief...I was hardly worried about me but I was concerned for how much more Gavin had in the tank. As we approached the house we saw a black truck pulling in the driveway. I flagged the man down and asked him what road we were on and he was kind enough to offer us a ride back to our house. I couldn't have been more thankful for his kindness and so appreciated the ride back. It's amazing how easy it is to get lost in the woods. I always boast of my keen sense of direction in the car, however perhaps my senses aren't so sharp in the wilderness??
I have attached a few of recent photos of Gavin because the girls have been hogging the spotlight lately. A couple of him out in the woods and a couple of his first outdoor haircut.

Ok so four weeks ago our lives changed in such a miraculous way. TWINS! WOW would've ever thought?? We certainly never would've guessed this would be our lot in life but we couldn't be more thankful for the blessing that they are. They are amazingly happy and content babies and we're super grateful for this as we've had quite a bumpy road. As some of you know I threw the left side of my back out the day we brought the girls home, and that evening I threw the right side out...CRAPPY TIMING! It was a bit of a struggle to say the least as Jenny was recovering from her C-section and I felt so guilty and useless being laid up on the couch, and being unable to help as much as I would've liked. A BIG THANK YOU to those who were kind enough to come by and help us with daily tasks such as cleaning, laundry, dishes etc... Thank you Mom, Deborah, and April... :) From there Gavin became sick with a sore throat/cold and he was G-rumpy. Then the girls became congested too but thankfully it didn't change their content little demeanors much at all. Then I became sick with what Gavin had and am still currently working through it. Then the other day Jenny stepped on a stick in the yard which rolled under her foot and caused her to fall which strained her incision. So although it didn't tear or cause any real damage it has given her a lot of discomfort again and has taken her back a couple of steps in the healing process. Please pray for her. Then I went to get her a couple of Tylenol 3's from a relative and she had an allergic reaction to them and her skin broke out in a rash and itched terribly for a good 24 hours. Then alas today we end up lost in the woods lol. On top of all this I've also been struggling with what I believe is Tennis elbow and a terrible knot in my left shoulder blade. Anyone know how to fix tennis elbow? I suddenly feel so OLD...I can't be falling apart already, can I?? Hopefully this next month will run a bit smoother and we can enjoy the weather and some family time with the kids.
YES I will also add a couple of shots (two) I took of the girls at the bottom of the post...
enjoy!
Shane

Out on our hike before we got lost...

Look at that massive root system...I couldn't believe how many enormous trees were down.

Gavin wasn't really enjoying his first outside haircut because when he's outside he just wants to play not sit in a chair.

Before & After

Gracie

Emily

Home Sweet Home!

Please read the next sentence in a low monotone voice... DUE TO THE GRAPHIC NATURE OF THIS POST, BLOG READER DISCRETION IS ADVISED.
WOW after three long days, " Jenny and the Jets" are finally home, and it's most excellent to have them here. The hospital staff at West Lincoln are truly amazing and they treated my wife and babies like the only three people in the place (They weren't - in case you were wondering). Thank you SO MUCH ladies; all nurses should be like you. :)
Ok so it all started early (and I mean early) Tuesday morning. To say the least neither of us slept well in anticipation of coming events, and we both felt totally exhausted and very run down upon arriving. I must admit that arriving at 7 am only to wait until 8 to get things going was a tad disappointing. I really would've appreciated the extra hour of "sleep" (I use that term loosely), but c'est la vie! So Jenny's C-section was scheduled for 9 am however due to the massive influx of babies, they were born at 10:22 and 10:23 respectively.
The longest part of the pregnancy must've been the 20 minutes I patiently sat waiting to go into the operating room. I was dressed in scrubs from head to toe anxiously watching the door to wait for my invite into the big scene. Upon entering the room I was told I could touch nothing blue which left me little room to squeeze by. I pinched my hands together and made my way behind the impersonal blue curtain where only my wives head existed as if it was floating in space. It reminded me of the In Living Color skit, The Head Detective (youtube it if you don't get the reference). I was also disappointed that Jenny didn't announce me as Dr. Reed upon arriving in the O.R. as previously discussed. It was somewhat unsettling to see my wife with her arms stretched out and strapped down as if she was being crucified or on the torture table to be drawn and quartered. Thankfully this wasn't the case...WHEW! The surgery lasted a few brief minutes until I heard the first cry, and as our eyes welled up I said to Jenny "that's a beautiful sound to hear, isn't it?". One minute later we heard a second cry and we both let out a big sigh of relief and watched them place our second baby on the warming bed. As they wiped them down we just stared in awe of God's crowning creation, and felt an overwhelming sense of peace and gratitude. They truly are fearfully and wonderfully made. It's sure great to witness such a beautiful thing but I readily admit that I much preferred Gavin's natural birth over this organized massacre. Not only did I find the C-section barbaric and impersonal, but also highly anticlimactic. I felt more anxiety for my wife then anything else, but her courage and strength often astonishes me, and never ceases to amaze me. Thank you Jenny for all you go through in giving us such beautiful children. :) The worst part of the whole ordeal was getting up to see Gracie and glancing over only to see the placenta hanging out of my wife, and blood rushing down her sides to the floor. EWWW GROSS!! I would've preferred not to see that, and I carefully exacted my every move from that moment on to make sure that unwholesome sight never entered into my field of view again. The nurse then asked me if I wanted to cut the cords to which I promptly and casually responded "no thanks", and everyone laughed. After a short moment I reconsidered and decided to go for it. I really didn't see the point (I'm so anal sometimes) as they were already removed from the placenta, and I was merely cutting off the extra slack. However, since I didn't cut Gavin's cord I decided to go for it and take it off my bucket list. lol From there I was promptly ushered out to remove my scrubs and wait again in the long dimly lit hallway. Before long they were rolling my two beauties towards me to head down stairs. What a fantastic moment! Still I was consumed with thoughts of how Jenny was doing after the ordeal. I really can't believe people actually ask for a C-section instead of just trying it the way God intended.
Ok now for the deets (details). The main event was held on April 12th 2011... In the Pink corner weighing in at 5 lbs 5 oz, with a full body reach of 18" Gracie Elizabeth Reed, and in the other pink corner (yes there is plenty O pink to go around) weighing in at 4 lbs 14 oz with a full body reach of 17.5" Emily Sophia Reed. (ok maybe I do watch too much UFC) That's right two beautiful healthy baby girls, and we're stoked to finally have them in our arms. Both of them did fantastically well in all of the preliminary tests and passed everything thrown at them with flying colours. Way to go girls!
After three long days at the hospital we're finally home and the first night was as smooth as butter. The babies are so content and never really cry at all. If things stay like this, it will be as easy as pie.
It's funny we were both hoping for another son and didn't know what we'd ever do with a girl. Well, now we've got two and they're incredible, and we're so glad God gives you what you need instead of what you think you want. I couldn't be happier to be the Daddy of twin daughters and can't wait to see how this adventure unfolds. It's going to be an absolute blast. I honestly didn't know how I could love another baby as much as Gavin, but like the Grinch, I felt my heart grew a couple sizes bigger that day.
Ok I know what you're thinking...SHUT UP SHANE and show us some pictures...
Enjoy!
p.s. for those of you who’ve offered to bring meals we’d kindly ask you not to because of my allergy. I will be home with Jenny all month and love to cook so we’ll be just fine and we appreciate your kind gesture.

Gracie (left) Emily (right)

Home Sweet Home! On the eve of the twins I finally got around to shooting a few simple maternity pics of my beautiful wife. Maternity pics are clearly not my forte, and thankfully Jenny just wanted some very plain and simple shots to document her belly. Doesn't she look fantastic? Really though, isn't the last possible minute the best possible time? She's not going to get any bigger then this, so I think the timing is absolutely perfect. Thankfully she didn't go into labour early or I might have been in a bit of hot water. eek!
So the weather was perfect if you don't mind apocalyptic winds, and cloudy periods with ever changing light. Despite this, we managed to capture my wife's gorgeous inner and outer beauty. She just glows with pregnant radiance doesn't she? So without further ado...
Shane

Two for One Tuesday!

Ok so we're less then two days away from "Two for One Tuesday" as I've coined it. That's right, two babies for the price of one. I can still hear Jenny's now infamous words ringing in my ears. "I'd have another baby if I didn't have to get pregnant again". WOW if we only knew how this was going to play out.
So people keep asking are we excited? Heck ya! We're totally ecstatic, and can't believe such a special blessing has been bestowed upon us. Hopefully everyone (yes that all inclusive word includes you) can come and see the babies and share in our joy.
Here are some answers to other questions people have been asking... :)
So you're probably wondering how we're going to appropriate the names? two words my friends... COIN TOSS! It's the only fair way... :)
How are we going to tell them apart? TATTOOS... that's right, I said it!
Will we have a favorite? FOR SURE!
Ok so I thought I'd share a few photos of my main man before the blog is overcome with images of the girls. Gavin is such an awesome son, and much more then I/we could've ever asked for. Even though he lacks a real fondness of my camera, he is still easily my favorite subject to shoot, and I'm sure these images will show you why.
The first few are specifically for someone really special to me. You know who you are, and I know these images will adorn your desktop for quite some time. Gavin is so proud his Dad is the gold holder, the champion, the Grand Pubba ...you get the point... And hopefully?? you can enjoy these few photos for a long time or at least as long as my current reign as the champ lasts. lol
For the rest of you allow me to put this into context... You see, my cousin and I have been playing cribbage for many years now and we've always enjoyed a little...well... gloating. haha Many a times been spent singing each other the infamous song "We are the champions" by Queen. However the winners version is more of an "I am the champion my friend" sorta thing... Last summer I found me this ridiculously awesome GOLD championship belt at (you guessed it) a garage sale, and I couldn't wait to strap it on and pop by for a visit. Unfortunately, much to my dismay, it got lost at our old house and wasn't found again until we moved. Yay for moving! So upon finding the belt, I showed up at her house and walked in with a real swagger in my step. She looked at me and said "what's with the swagger" and a moment later she saw the gold hanging over my shoulder in classic 1980's WWF wrestling fashion. The look on her face was absolutely priceless, and we both busted out in laughter. Anywho, that's the deal...
These are for you cuz so enjoy them, and you're more than welcome to order large wall prints if you'd prefer. :)
The rest are shots taken at our new place in the beautiful back country.
Ok gotta run, catcha on the flipside.
Shane

This is Gavin reenacting the feeling of elation one has upon winning the GOLD and becoming the CHAMP!

This is Gavin reenacting the cocky attitude that comes with being a champion. I know this feeling is foreign to you, but perhaps you'll know it someday. NOT!

And finally this is Gavin reenacting "this is my gold and you'll never own it, so don't even mess with me." Isn't that the best wrestling face?

These next few were taken on our hike in the woods this week. Gavin is such a trooper and hiked almost the whole property which is ginormous. (yes that's a real word)

These last few are taken right in our backyard, and c'mon isn't he the cutest ever?

Twelve Days Til Bebes

So YES this is another update, and YES you have read that correctly...we have to wait another 12 days for the girls to arrive. Say what?? Unlike the twelve days of Christmas there will be no festive blessings, just a whole lot of waiting.
The phone rang on March 30th shortly after four and Jenny answered it only to find our Dr's secretary on the other end. Jenny thought she was just confirming our C-section appointment for the 31st @ 11:30 or perhaps just reminding Jenny of the important items to bring. Then the first bomb landed...when she said the Dr. is on the line and would like to speak with you. Jenny's heart sunk a little thinking this can't be good. Then the Dr. spoke and the second bomb landed as he said "Hi Jenny, I have some bad news". That is probably the last phrase an expecting mother wants to hear and I could see the anxiety riddled across Jenny's face. Thankfully it was followed with the words "I can't do the C-section tomorrow, we have to reschedule it". WHEW! All I could say is "he better not be changing the date" lol I had my mind set on the 31st. But it is what it is. :)
Basically the run down is this... the midwives we originally had given Jenny a due date, however our first ultrasound didn't agree with that date so they pushed it back a bit over a week. The midwives had to transfer care to the Dr. because we are having multiples, and by then we'd had another ultrasound and the Dr. had obviously never seen the discrepancy with the dates on the first one. Thankfully he looked everything over the day prior to the surgery and caught this. He didn't want to deliver the babies pre-term (obviously) so he extended the surgery 12 more days.
We get that it's better for the girls to hang out in the bedwomb a bit longer and get bigger and stronger... however we wish this call hadn't been so last minute. We were all psyched up for the big day and neither of us are good waiters. This pregnancy has had so much uncertainty and this is just another small bump in the road.
Gavin was sad too as he was excited about meeting his sisters and having Deborah visit, and Grandma sleep over... but it will all happen soon enough.
Jenny is doing great other than her big swollen Shrek feet and narcoleptic tendencies. I'm sure by the time the day arrives she'll be more than happy to be done with this pregnancy.
Here is a pic of the main man and the girls' beautiful cribs.
P.S. this is NOT an April fools joke...however the funny thing is the Dr. originally wanted to deliver the girls on April fools day and we said NO!!!
Shane

The main man - a moment of sadness followed by watching some Madagascar 2...that fixed everything :)

We stenciled the girls names over their cribs but as you know they're private so I had to sensor them.

Moving On Up

I named this post “moving on up” because like George and Weesie, we’ve really felt blessed recently in so many ways, and our new home is a major upgrade for us. And well...I also have a passion for the Jefferson's theme song, so be sure to check that out! I know that totally ages me as many of you are like... the who? C’mon now! Anyway...

Ok! Hello, my name is Shane and I’m a terrible blogger. My last blog post was at Christmas 2010, and I’ve been desperately trying to muster up the energy ever since. To my defense, we have moved and are getting ready for twins.... so that leaves me a bit of wiggle room for lame excuses. Oh I must add our internet sucks, and I certainly don't recommend a Rogers Rocket (turtle) Stick. Any suggestions of a better option are welcome.
So much has happened since then that I regret not actively blogging as I feel I may miss so many important details.
So obviously you know that we’ve moved! We now live amongst the beautiful rolling hills of Agape Valley in the heart of the Niagara Region (that sure sounds nice, doesn’t it??). The property is 143 stunning acres near Shorthills Provincial Park, and living here is absolute bliss. Anyone who knows me knows I love the outdoors, especially being in the woods. The view leaves me speechless every morning when I look out the window and thank my God for this little slice of heaven on earth. I love hiking and mountain biking and there will be plenty ‘o time for that (I hope). YES!!!! This post is really beginning to sound like an online dating profile or something... I should add that I also like long walks on the beach, reading, and rock paper scissor showdowns, so bring it!! haha. It’s sure going to be an awesome place for our ever expanding family (namely our kids) to grow up. And I’m still desperately trying to convince Jenny that a Quad is a “need”, not a “want” so please help my cause by facebooking Jenny on my behalf. To those who do, you are good people (:
It is also amazing to live at Agape Valley because it’s a fantastic ministry to be involved in. They produce maple syrup and honey here, and run children’s day camps in the summer. It is completely run by Christian volunteers all for the love of seeing children come to Christ during the 8 weeks of summer bible camp. You just can’t beat that! I highly recommend you stop by next Saturday for the last day of Maple Syrup Days before it comes to a close. You can enjoy the best pancakes this side of Texas, as well as FREE hayrides, and FREE sugar bush tours. Not to mention the world’s best maple syrup...you gotta purchase some “liquid gold” (as I call it) before you leave. And if you can make it out here, you better stop by and say hello. OR ELSE!
So we’re three (that’s right three) days out from the arrival of our twin girls, EEEK! I guess I should be scared or anxious or something, and I really thought I would be, but God’s perfect peace has me as cool as a cucumber. I’m not sure if Jenny is quite as calm as I am, but after all I’m not the one having the C-section. I still can’t believe we’re having twins, but it is what it is, and we’re stoked. I can’t believe “Trina” and “Sabrina” are almost here. ;) WOW time flies... Bring on the bebe’s
So I guess I’ll end this post here before I write a short story, but stay tuned for updates. For those of you who are out of the loop, live on another planet, or want to fervently pray for us... Jenny’s C-section is March 31st at 1 pm. The Dr. believes they’re identical twins as they’ve only found one placenta thus far (in 5 ultrasounds), however Dr’s like weathermen are often wrong so we’ll just have to wait and see, won’t we?
We can’t tell you how blessed we feel and how appreciative we are for all of the baby showers, gifts, offers to help with the babies (you better mean it) and kind words we’ve received. It has been overwhelming to say the least, and thank you just doesn’t seem like an adequate enough way to express the deep gratitude we have. We love you all and are thankful to have such amazing people in our life. (:
Ok I’ll try to end this again without another tangent lol.
Here are a few pics of our new home, and some police composites of what we think our babies will look like. ;)
All the best!
Shane & Jenny

Gavin moved to a full size bed shortly after arriving at the new house and he loves it although it's not evident from this photo which was taken just moments after he awoke from a nap.

Ok so I want one of these, now can you see why?? NEED! that's right I NEED it! :) This shot was taken at one of Agape's alternate sugar bush sites and WOW was it ever muddy there. I don't know how Tim convinced me to bring my camera here??

My new office! YESSSSS

Even better, this is often the view from my new office :) Most of you will be happy to know that I've stopped harassing everyone on facebook with my jubilant expressions of excitement about seeing deers. < (Charlene I know you'll read this)

The straight dope...Jenny wanted me to add this because she believes this more accurately explains why I haven't been putting out blogs. Oh... to be a kid again... But that's what Christmas is all about, and it was an absolute joy to watch him tear into the presents 'O' plenty. Funny thing is... in typical kid fashion he loved the cheapest thing the most. No it wasn't the box, but it may have well been. He got a Chinese yo yo in his stocking... at least that's what I think it's called?? Correct me if I'm wrong. It's this crazy striped paper thing rolled around a plastic straw looking stick that telescopes out when you "shoot it like a laser" (as Gavin says). I think it made 80 percent of the pictures we took today, and brought more entertainment than anything else by far. He hedged a full on assault on everyone who came through the door. Best ninety-five cents we've ever spent (ok, maybe not ever), and perhaps we should've saved some money and just bought him a dozen of those puppies??
Over all it was a great day shared with friends, and family. The turkey was spot on delicious, and the gravy was stellar as usual. (nice work Jenny!!) I love me a big meal, but I feel like I have "Prader-Willi Syndrome" every holiday. I just have a hard time walking away from the food, and controlling my insatiable appetite for more. I hover over the left-overs like a famished vulture (even though I'm full) constantly picking, and munching until the wee hours of the morning. Please help me!!!
I hope you had a wonderful Christmas this year, and wish you all the best in 2011.
Take 5 minutes and watch this awesome video, and I'm sure you'll be encouraged and blessed.
Down At The Manger
Ok here are a few pictures...
Shane

I love colourful Christmas bokeh!!

...and the assaults begin lol

a shot at the camera...or perhaps the photographer??

opening a stocking stuffer...

Gavin grins when he gets his paws on the "big" present he'd been eyeing all week. Well actually I think it is. I don't often share my personal thoughts, however some recent events have made me really evaluate things, and why it is I do what I do... I've contemplated whether to publish this post, or leave it lost in internet space like many other posts I write simply to get things off my chest.

From the moment I first picked up a SLR a number of years ago I was totally captivated, hook, line, and sinker. I was SOLD! It was like I was shot through the heart with cupid's arrow. Ok enough with the metaphors, but seriously I was in love with photography, and a new passion was born. This passion has lead me to spend countless hours shooting, practicing, learning photoshop, lighting, and every other facet of this remarkable trade. Something about it has just felt right since the day I first held a "good camera". Yes I was one of those guys who picked up a pro camera, (it was film and not even my own) and knew in the blink of an eye I wanted to be a photographer. (haha I can hear the multitudes of groans from the people in this business.) But you gotta start somewhere right? This passion has given me an insatiable appetite for knowledge, and google has been the ultimate instructor. Through this wonderful world of information I've had the privilege of training under the tutelage of some of the world's best photographers, and have also learned a ton from other average joes just like me. All for FREE!!! What an awesome age we live in.

In the beginning I received a lot of encouragement from a couple of photographers who saw promise in my work, and I also received a lot of discouragement from photographers who explicitly told me all of the perils, and pitfalls of this business. I was told that there were too many photographers already in this area (eek over-saturation), how every sap with a digital camera thinks they're a photographer (meaning me lol), how I'd most likely never make it because most people fail at photography (that's an awfully poor attitude), how I just wasn't quite good enough (ouch!), how maybe I should pursue stock photography (um..thanks but no thanks), how I had to know everything first (like that's possible), and have the best gear available to take stellar photos like them (so not true) etc... the list goes on and on. I found few people who were willing to help me or show me any of their so called "trade secrets". Well thankfully I ignored the latter group of pessimists, and listened to the few people who gave me a glimmer of hope that I actually had what it takes. This hope has given me the ability to press on through difficult times when I really felt like giving up. Yep it's true...I've actually thought of throwing in the towel, waiving the white flag, kissing my camera good-bye etc... In fact each winter I spend the "dark days" as I call them, looking at last year's work wondering if it's really good enough. Did I achieve what I set out to do? Was I successful? Did I improve? Then I read, and practice, and read, and practice, and read, and practice... as I prepare for the new year. I diligently push myself to improve my skill set, and raise the bar for fear of failure. I think we all somewhere deep down have these fears, and when they reveal their ugly faces we have two options...fight or flight... We can face our fears head on or draw back and cower. I choose to fight. Sometimes we even have a fear of success, and the pressures, and demons that can come with it. (arrogance, pride, or worst of all the dreaded "rock star" mentality etc...) Either way if you feel discouraged inwardly, or are receiving negative comments outwardly, I encourage you to press on. This just may be a sign that you're on the right track, and perhaps even perceived as a threat. (yeah right!) Sometimes things that seem so bad at the time, can actually produce so much good in our lives. They can help us see who we don't want to be, or maybe give us the fuel we need to push forward. Sometimes it's difficult to see the positive stuff in the midst of the storm, but when the clouds subside hopefully we can learn and grow from the experience.

So why am I a photographer? Simply put, because I love photography. I love expressing myself through the imagery I produce. I love working with people. I love editing photos. I love driving in my car "location scouting", I love making people laugh and smile, and most importantly I LOVE my wife and son (and my two soon arriving daughters WOOHOO!!!) and something tells me they love seeing me happy. (: I hope I don't ever lose focus on what got me started, or forget that moment my passion was first ignited. It took me over 30 years of living on this earth to find something to be passionate about. If I had to hear the question, "what do you want to do for a living?" one more time, I might have finally snapped. You really never know how life is going to turn out. I just may become an overwhelming success, or I may fail miserably. Or perhaps God may have other plans for my life, but for now I'm a photographer. I didn't start my business to get filthy rich, to receive praise, or to gain popularity. I did it for me. I also didn't know that personal attacks from the hands of other photographers, and a few internet crazies (beware, they're out there) was something I had to look forward to. Accusations of using "their" locations (they must own a lot of property), to copying "their" style (I wish I invented every style of retouching), to using "their" poses (how do you copyright a pose?), to speaking with "their" potential clients (say what??), to just existing in "their" territory (well paaaaaardon me), to using "their" website (it's a template available for anyone who buys it lol), to using "their" website music etc... Ridiculous!! me, me, me, me, me, is it really all about us? All I can say is this...if you want to, and can copy me, go for it!! I really don't care, and wish you all of the success in the world because I don't believe my talents, my skills, my business, my camera, or my money is really mine anyways. It is all from the good hand of God, and I want to do the right thing with what I've been given. I'm not out to copy anyone, and I love learning all styles of photography/retouching... from classic, to vintage, to grunge, to commercial edgy off-camera lighting stuff etc... I just don't ever want to be that guy who is so consumed with scouring the internet to see who is copying his work, with how many facebook comments he gets, with how many people are in his group, with how awesome he is, with how he's saving the world with his amazing gift of photography one shutter click at a time lol etc... I don't think any of these things hold any weight to who I am as a photographer, or as a man. Why do I do what I do? Because I love it, and the process that comes with it. If you catch me doing vintage or off camera lighting, or any other style for that matter... please rest easy, and don't flatter yourself. I'm not copying "you"!! Perhaps I "also like" these "popular/trendy" styles of photography and retouching. I've hardly "arrived" or mastered the art of photography, and am always learning new things/styles, and striving to be better just like the next guy. We all look around for inspiration from time to time, and I believe you can give two artists all of the same tools, locations, etc... and they'll always create something unique. Sadly there are some people in this world I'll never be as good as, (because their talent level is just through the roof, over the top, incredible...) but it won't stop me from trying. If you ever have any questions or want to know any of my "trade secrets" just ask... because they didn't cost me a penny, and what's mine is yours. (or if you don't want to talk to me just google it... cause that's what I did). I think real and lasting success is loving your family, loving God, and serving those less fortunate than yourself. That is the legacy I want to leave behind, and if I can take a few decent images in the meantime, and make some people smile that totally ROCKS!

When a professional athlete plays their particular sport as a child, they're not concerned with getting signed, trade deadlines, contract negotiations, or the multitude of other issues that arise. They simply play "for the love of the game". That is why I do what I do, and if by God's grace some success is a byproduct of this, then may I remain humble, and thankful for whatever comes my way.

Sorry for the heavy post folks...and thank you to the "internet crazies" who've caused me to stop in my tracks, and reflect.
Have a Merry Christmas, and an incredible 2011!!! The Nicholson's were enthusiastic right from the get go, which is always a fantastic way to start things off. Shortly after meeting them I spotted the shocking void in the girls' attire. Ok, well specifically their shoes... (or lack thereof) Ok, they weren't exactly shoeless to set the record straight, but perhaps it wouldn't have made much of a difference. lol They both had these flip-flop, slide-on, ballet looking things that certainly didn't scream winter photoshoot footwear. I had immediate concerns as I planned to take them all around from the snowy trails to the wintery fields. Bill immediately reassured me that it was cool to go wherever I wanted, and they'd be just fine. whew! Apparently those girls have super-human nerveless feet, or mind boggling mental powers that allow them to block out pain. Either way all I could think about was Mr. Deeds black lifeless unfeeling foot, and how this could be their ultimate destiny. Ok enough about the feet... (sorry girls) We had a fantastic time to say the least, and loved seeing how close the Nicholsons are. There is nothing more important than family, and seeing them interact was truly a joy. I tell ya, it just doesn't get any better then this. Today I dropped Jenny off at her ultrasound appointment, and went to run some errands. (I just wasn't feeling another boring hour in the waiting room) After about an hour I returned, and as I was waiting at the secretaries window to see if it was finally time for me to enter the room, the ultrasound technician peeked into the waiting room and bellowed my name. I was brimming with excitement as the moment had finally arrived. I'm not good with surprises, I just like to know things. I entered the small dark room, and heard the technician speak those four ridiculously awesome words "I have your answer". I can't remember the last time I had such a sweet feeling in my soul. Jenny and I had glowing faces like two kids on Christmas morning eyeing their plethora of gifts. The technician started from head to toe on both babies showing us a complete cross section of their anatomy, and it seemed like it was taking forever. It was so amazing to see everything from their beating hearts, to their teeny tiny little toes. So COOL!!! Then finally she returned to the anatomical area of interest. WHEW! She showed us those three magical little lines that clearly identified them as girls, and we were ecstatic to say the least.

So we returned home, told my mom (who was overjoyed) and started making some phone calls. Our friend Deborah was kind enough to remind me of my infamous words "no pink will ever enter my home". Well I guess things are gonna change, but this whole pink thing won't be an easy transition for me and my manly lair. lol (: It's actually funny how often throughout this pregnancy we've had to eat our words.

I don't know why but I just have a hunch that the twins are identical. However, since I've clearly been wrong on every other assumption I've made this pregnancy, I don't think my gut feeling holds any weight. Whatever we're having, it's what God has chosen for us, and we're cool with it. It's sure funny how things work out, but we're happy to share this exciting new adventure with each other, and all of you.

I've added a couple more ultrasound images below...enjoy!
Shane & Jenny

Look at their cute little feet...ok they look more like vicious little bear claws...perhaps it's just motion blur...

There is clearly no longer any room for speculation as it's definitively two heads.

Merry Christmas!!

We just want to wish all of our AMAZING clients a fabulous Christmas. What a crazy e-session...we captured the good, the bad, and the downright ugly. I've never had someone get "arrested" during a shoot before. ;) We covered several blocks of the St. Catharines downtown core, and ended up in alleyways, over fences, on rooftops, in parking garages, in parades, and even bent over police cars. WOW!! Colin and Kim's love for each other, and zest for life is totally refreshing. You better keep your eye on these two because we feel the adventures have only just begun. Their chemistry is perfect as Colin is a real jokester, and Kim clearly thinks he's hilarious. I'd have to concur! We can't wait to shoot their wedding next summer, and we hope you enjoy these images as much as we enjoyed taking them. Definitely a session I'll never forget.
Shane

<img style="float:left; We got up, had breakfast, played, had lunch...and it was finally time for Gavin to go down for his daily nap. So unfortunately this meant that Jenny had to go to her first ultrasound appointment alone. ): It really didn't matter so much to me because my experience has been that you sit for an hour, and then when they do finally bring you in at the end of the appointment it's only for a lousy 30 seconds. After all that waiting you're lucky to get a solid minute (personally I feel you've earned more time) of seeing weird distorted shapes that you care barely make out on an ultrasound machine. Not too exciting if you ask me. Ok, so I put Gavin to bed and got to work on retouching some engagement photos. (coming soon) I went up to the bathroom just after three, and as I was returning back downstairs the front door swung open. I said "hi baby, how did that go?" and then I immediately said "just tell me it isn't twins...(and laughed)". Then time as I knew it froze, and my laughter ceased. For a moment we entered the weird and wacky world of the surreal. I looked at Jenny's bewildered yet concerned expression, and I knew this was no joke. (after all... not a funny joke, right?) I said "what?" You've got to be kidding me?" She didn't have to say a word. We stood in silence for a moment that seemed like forever, and she finally said "I'm dead serious...it's twins!" I couldn't believe it... as much as it was super duper exciting, it was also ridiculously frightening. We certainly never would've guessed this happening to us in a million years. After all, neither of us have ever had twins in our families. But here we are with not one baby, but two. We hugged and kissed as we were overcome with a crazy mix of emotions. I was shaking violently with chattering teeth for a good 15-20 minutes, and Jenny just paced the house with a look of shock riddled across her face. We then started making phone calls, and this put many friends and family members into shock too. Thankfully there was also a reverberating excitement that slowly started to calm our frazzled nerves.
Here is my call to our friend Alex (who is married to a twin) which she posted on my facebook wall because she it found quite hilarious...
Shane: Hey. How ya doin?
Alex: Fine
Shane: Well aren't you going to ask how I'm doing.
Alex: Sorry Shane - how are you?
Shane: I'm FREAKING OUT!!!....
Priceless!
So anyways here we are... having twins! And now that the initial shock is subsiding... we are thrilled!!! Our "plan" was to only have two kids, and we've said that all along. This was our "last baby", and we were totally cool with that. I guess God had other plans for the Reeds, and oh what an adventure it will be... (: I guess God didn't get my memo which clearly said "as long as it isn't twins". Funny thing is, my friend Tanya who grew up on the same street as me just announced twins a couple of weeks ago. And I was super excited for her, but remember saying to Jenny "glad it's not us" lol Jenny said "me too because I don't know what we'd ever do". Well I guess we're gonna find out... Tanya and Jenny are now twin buddies, and their due dates are only a week apart... so we could potentially have them on the same day. So crazy!
Our friends were recently home visiting from Iowa, and they came by our house the other day for a visit. Our friend Beth was asking Jenny if she would have more babies, and Jenny said "only if I didn't have to get pregnant again!" (because she gets so violently ill) When we called Beth yesterday to tell them the news she laughed as she reminded Jenny of her words, and said "I guess you don't have to get pregnant again!".
I hope this whole post isn't a random bunch of babbling, and if it is you'll have to forgive me... but I don't think my head is on straight quite yet. So many things have been racing through my mind since yesterday... like practical things such as woah! we need to move, we need a bigger vehicle...perhaps a mini van EEEK! Anyone wanna trade one for a Ford Focus wagon? lol We need two of every item known to man... How are we going to juggle two babies at once? How is everything gonna work out? etc... I guess it makes it easiest to trust God, and rest in His grace when you feel you have no other options.
Then some humorous things like...perhaps should we watch the movie Twins (I think not) to get ready for this experience? We better start looking for 2 for 1 specials...does this mean we won't have a middle child? (ok technically we will but you know what I mean) Could our twins possibly grow up to revitalize the fallen Doublemint gum franchise. I sure haven't seen a good Doublemint commercial in a while...(I love that song...so nostalgic) good thing I don't shoot with film...and lastly please for the love of God don't let our babies be born on May 4th. We don't want our babies to be tortured with "may the fourth be with you" every year on their Birthdays by Star Wars groupies. We don't want Star Wars twins...lol
It seems all throughout this pregnancy we've been randomly bringing up twins, and making jokes like "as long as it's not twins". We believe God has been speaking to us in order weaken the blow, and prepare us for yesterday. Jenny came in the door so worried about how she was going to break to news to me, and didn't I randomly joke and say "as long as it's not twins". Too funny! We are thankful that we've been entrusted with such an AMAZING and SPECIAL blessing, and can't wait to shower the new babies with the same love we have for Gavin.
In case you were wondering we don't know if they're identical (which are much more rare) or fraternal twins yet, and will find out on the 15th of December when we have our next ultrasound appointment. I won't be missing that one lol! As many of you know, we also weren't going to find out the sex... but in light of this twin business, we've decided to find out so we can be fully prepared.
Gavin currently doesn't want a brother or sister (in the singular) so how are we gonna tell him two babies will soon be infiltrating his little life?
Anywho, I will stop babbling now, and share a couple of our ultrasound pictures...We certainly never thought we'd see a Baby A, and a Baby B. Life can change in an instant! So weird!
Shane & Jenny

The Peters

A stellar location, stunning weather, and a sharply dressed family brimming with excitement was the perfect recipe for a marvelous shoot. It was so great to arrive at the Peters home, (finally! long story and we're glad you're feeling better Cathy) and instantly feel so comfortable and welcome. This family is certainly something special, and their passion for life and each other was abundantly obvious.
We headed down the long (and I mean long) staircase to the beach expecting frigid temperatures, and wondering if we brought enough layers. Much to our delight it wasn't that bad, and besides I really don't think anything would've slowed the Peters down. I thought we should start this beach shoot as you "should" start any beach shoot. You know...in typical Hollywood fashion, with a slow motion sexy-faced Baywatch beach run. Ok, so the idea didn't fly... however it certainly did set the mood for the shoot which was FUN FUN FUN! We thoroughly enjoyed hanging out with the Peters family, and are excited to share some of their images with you.
Shane

I LOVE this shot!!

This shot is soooo hilarious...they're pointing and laughing as the tide washes in and gives Jenny & I soakers...way too funny!! After all, who wouldn't totally dig being a fashion model for an evening?? I was amazed at how much fun we actually had, and the super creative ideas the girls came up with on the spot. Born naturals I tell ya! I haven't laughed that hard in a while. Special props to Amanda J. for her ridiculous creativity. WOW! She is the one pictured below with the whippy hair that looks like a mohawk, and with the amish style beard made out of her own hair. That beard shot was absolutely hilarious, and looked freakishly authentic from some angles. (ok maybe from a distance) Really it was a great job by all. It sorta felt like we were shooting a GAP campaign minus the big budget, high end gear, and zany antics. All we used was a couple of off camera flashes, a soft box, and a silver lined umbrella.
WARNING!!! The images below are infused with copious amounts of FUN, and may cause you to laugh hysterically or at the very least appreciate the creativity, and passion of the next generation.
Great job girls!
My apologies to you ladies who aren't featured below... however some people were "uh hmm" little camera hogs, and these images were our faves of the night...
Shane

Bethany...

Brandy...

Amanda M...

Hannah...

Amanda J...

Alexis...

Hannah...

Amanda J...hilarious!

Tallman Family

Shortly after arriving at Charles Daley Park we met up with the Tallman family. I've had the pleasure of working with Andy (black jacket) a number of times now, and it was great to finally meet the rest of his gang.
We were in for a cold one sport's fans, and I think the Tallmans wished they'd done this shoot a month or so sooner. The wind coming off the lake was pretty violent, and was making my eyes water. (I know quit whining) Sorry I had to get it off my chest! But being the super troopers we are...we all pressed on, and scored some great shots. Mercedes (the pooch) seemed to be the least bothered by the weather.
Here are a few shots!
Shane

The Edwards Family

So we arrived at our location and I glanced into my rear view mirror only see these two "crackers" (that's right total crackers) emerging from their car, and I was like "boy are we ever in for a treat!" haha I'm TOTALLY kidding guys... Alex and Eric are two absolutely amazing people, and were actually in our wedding seven years ago. We consider ourselves blessed to be friends with such kind, generous, and "sometimes" hilarious people.
Ok...so I started off the shoot thinking some family jumping was a good way to loosen them up. Boy did I open a can of worms lol...note to self...haha (ok so I'm occasionally a nerd, and yes I actually have a digital voice recorder) Jumping was just the boost the kids needed to start frantically running down the long (and never ending) country road bursting into laughter. It was hilarious, and so was corralling them back into the shoot. (: We had a blast, and we always enjoy working with the Edwards.
Oh... and shooting in fog is sick!! (:
Hopefully the pictures make you smile too.
Shane

Look at Eric... looking all GQ...

Super hero pose...and ATTACK! lol

Love this sequence...and I thought on the shoulders was another good idea...ok, totally it was (:

A little jumping action...

I think Ethan is cheering because the shoot was over.

Seeing Multiples??

I'm gonna bet you are... We had tons of fun last Tuesday evening showing the girls how to do mulitple exposures. It's a simple trick, but the effect never gets old. (at least for me) Multiple exposures always cause me (without fail) to start singing the song "Double Vision" by Foreigner. I don't exactly know why... I know... I'm quirky, but it is a decent tune from the 80's. Well it probably came out in the late 70's but I'm babbling now so lets move on...
This shot was taken from the balcony in the church foyer using a tripod. I think I took about 5 different shots of them posing/running to make the composite below. I then overlayed them in photoshop with layer masks, and simply painted them in. Viola! Like magic... There was only 7 girls in our group last week in case you were counting. Give it a try it's as easy as pie!
Nice work girls!! We did their shoot a short time ago at the historic Balls Falls conservation area. The weather was perfect, and exactly the opposite of the forecast. (isn't it always the way?)
Upon arriving we met Melany & Brad, and their two adorable little girls. Mackenzie (the older of the two girls) within minutes was my new best friend. SWEET! Out of the blue, with barely a warning... she just started chatting with me a mile a minute, like someone removed the cork on a bottle of the bubbly. She just exploded into conversation, and it was ridiculously cute. It was also apparently so out of character for her. What can I say? I just seem to have a way with kids. Overall we had a fantastic time with the Cooks, and here are a couple images from the shoot.
Shane

Ok... don't get all metaphorical on me, but I like these shots.

Love this shot!

I'm back!

I know you missed me BIGTIME right? Ok well maybe not, but I'm sure happy to be feeling better. Thankfully my nasty throat infection cleared up just in time for my 26th Birthday! Whew! lol
It was a relaxed event this year as Jenny just hasn't been feeling too well. We had plans to go away for the night, however those plans are on hold for an undetermined date in the near future. Looking forward to it baby!
Thank you to everyone who sent Birthday wishes my way!
Oh...I did get something pretty cool just in time for my birthday...that's right a 24-105mm f4 L lens _______.
Thanks for all of the Birthday wishes!
Shane

There it is...what a beauty eh?

Ok, so maybe you see something isn't quite right with this lens.

Have you filled in the blank yet?? What else could he possibly want to be?

Finally... the moment arrived, and watching his unbridled excitement and joy just made our day. He absolutely loved his costume, and although he is not fond of wearing face masks... he certainly enjoyed his spiderman tuque. (which went rather nicely with the ensemble, and served a practical purpose too) Since Gavin isn't really a big fan of scary things... (he calls them plastic, because before the freak out goes into full swing, I always tell him it's ok, he's safe, they're just plastic, and they aren't real) so we decided to go for a drive and visit some family. (and friends) Upon returning home he was so excited with his new found wealth, (in his spiderman bucket) that we decided to press on, and brave some door to door action. Much to my surprise, he loved it!!! (: He would go to each door, put down his bucket, knock, and then say... trick or treat! The funny part was, that he wouldn't let anyone put anything in his Spiderman bucket. That was his job, and he'd take each item from their hands, say thank you, and place it in his bucket. Too funny! Overall it was a fantastic experience, and we hope all of you had an enjoyable day as well.
Happy Halloween!
Shane & Jenny
yes of course there are a few images below (:

I know these pumpkin pics suck but I was in a hurry.

The transformation.

Look at that hero pose...well done son!

Yes that sure is a laser...I mean a spider web...

And we're off...

Gavin's First Haircut!!!

OK, so today was a BIG day in Gavin's life. First haircut day...WOOHOO!!! After a mere 28 months of life, he was finally ready for his first haircut. Let's just say the fro had no more room to grow, so it was time to go. Ya know?
We decided to kick it old school, and do it ourselves. I fondly remember my cousin cutting my hair in my aunt's backyard when I was young. Warm summer evenings on the stool repeatedly being told to quit squirming. Sorry Jori... (apparently I still haven't learned how to sit still) I know it's not quite the same, but the concept is. Before anyone asks...NO! We didn't keep any of the old curly dead hair that fell to the ground. I know a few of you are freaking out about this, but sorry we think it's weird. (: It's hard to believe his jerry curl measured in at a whopping 10 inches at its longest point. You certainly would've never guessed it was that long by looking at it. It honestly would've made Lionel Ritchie jealous. And if did start to get out of control you just had to dampen it lightly, and watch it magically spring form tightly back to his head. Jenny got out the scissors today ready to "trim" after a week of discussion regarding this hair cut. I thought it was time for him to have a man-do...perhaps a mohawk or a brushcut. (kicking it military style) Jenny wouldn't have any of this. We were just doing a "trim" because his curls are his "major selling feature" according to her. What is he selling? C'mon, is it really possible that no-one would love and enjoy our adorable little man if the curls got chopped off? I seriously doubt that! Anywho, Jenny won! I hear your cheers ladies. So not cool! haha So the deed is done, and you can now scroll down to see the cutting, and the crying. Just kidding...he was a superstar, and actually really enjoyed it. Maybe he just liked the attention, or the combs, but either way it was smooth sailing. Now before you look, note that in one image he has a Eugene Levy helmet hair sort of thing going on. We're hoping it was just a bad camera angle... (;
Enjoy!

Shane

Before...as you can see it was getting a tad chaotic. The more he'd play, the more the fro would grow.

Getting ready for the first cut.

Ahhh there it is...went as smooth as butter.

I told you it was long. Jenny is now pro by the way, and is offering $10 haircuts. Come one, come all. Now carefully examine the right image, and please tell me Jenny didn't give my son helmet hair??

Don't you just wanna hug & kiss him?

Weekend Excursion to St. Jacobs Market

A rare weekend with nothing to do was staring us in the face last Friday evening. Jenny and I looked at each other simultaneously, and both said "what do you want to do this weekend?" A moment of indecisiveness came upon us, and we both said "I dunno". Then, without warning my mind began to wander. (not the first time that's happened) hmmmm....what should we do? Perhaps, we'd take the private jet to Cali (that's what the cool people call it) or maybe head west and ski at Whistler? So many thoughts racing through my mind of the endless possibilities and adventures we could embark upon. And then I was suddenly startled as Jenny said "are you even listening to me?' My momentary daydream abruptly ended, and reality started to sink back in. Maybe, just maybe...I've been watching a bit to much television as the dark season approaches. So after a bit of discussion, we decided to take our annual trek to St. Jacobs Market and visit the land of the Amish. It's always so relaxing up that way, and if we ever were going to move, the Guelph area would probably be our choice. (relax...we're so not moving, so don't get your shirt in a knot) We had a fantastic day, and totally lucked out with the weather as the forecast for all of Southern Ontario seemed to be rain. blah! We stopped at some roadside garage sales (of course) and antique stores too. We even stopped near Elmira to have lunch beside Ontario's last covered bridge in existence. (ooooooo I know what riveting excitement, right?) Anyways, it was just a simple Saturday road trip, but it was sure nice to get out of town for the day.
Here are a few pics we snapped along the way.
Shane

I love this abandoned street car along HWY 6 just before Guelph.

Just a garage sale item.

Driving through the covered bridge.

This Amish boy was working out of the back of a truck at the market.

Gavin tried on some fun hats, but ultimately decided on a spiderman toque. surprise surprise!

This Amish guy looks sketchy doesn't he? (shoot that is) Kaycie (the little girl) apparently wasn't as stoked as we were. Perhaps a strange man and woman with cameras in her face was a tad out of her comfort zone. hmm... Adam on the other hand, was as cool as a cucumber. He was like a seasoned veteran, and struck relaxed yet powerful poses that would make even a GQ model jealous. Before long we were peeking out from trees, laughing, making faces, and really doing whatever it took to get the shot. Not knowing that mere moments away, a miracle was about to happen. We started hearing strange noises in the air, and further investigation was a must. I rounded the side of an old abandoned stone foundation (which was very cool I might add) and BAM there it was. A turkey! (caged of course) This turkey soon became the star (maybe even the mascot if a shoot can have one) of the show with it's multitude of gobbles. This "miracle turkey" (as I like to call it) radically changed the outcome of our shoot, and turned some frowns upside down. SWEET! We had a blast enjoying the turkey, the Nicholls, and their absolutely adorable children. And... we can't wait to do their Christmas card next month.
Here are a few of the shots, and my apologies that we failed to capture the "miracle turkey" in all of it's glory. (bummer)
Shane

I love this shot. FUN! FUN!
Last night we did Photography in the Dark. Say what? I know it sounds more complex then it is, but it's pretty cool if you ever care to give it a try. So we got outside and set our cameras up on tripods ready to bring on the good times. Jenny went to start lighting sparklers to get the magic going, and wouldn't you know it she just couldn't seem to get them lit. We thought perhaps the low budget party store sparklers were faulty? Hmmm... Attempt after attempt was made to light them as we circled Jenny creating a wind barrier. Then to our dismay we noticed the flame on the barbecue lighter was becoming increasingly smaller, and smaller, and (poof) it was gone. Yep the lighter was dead, and we'd just barely got started. It wasn't a total loss because we did have glow sticks, bracelets, and glasses... but the sparklers were the pinnacle of our vision, and it just wasn't going to be as entertaining without them. Jenny ran inside desperately looking for a lighter but came up empty handed. Then the light bulb went off and I said "what about the car lighter?." So yes we used the car lighter and ran from the car to the empty field with sparklers (hmmm running with sparklers? brilliant!) hoping they wouldn't burn out on our way. (and also hoping that this plan wouldn't result in any injuries of course) Thankfully it went off without a hitch. WHEW! Even though we had a bit of a fiasco at the onslaught, we still had an excellent time, and got a few decent shots. Preparedness is the key, and next time we'll double up on the good old BBQ lighters.
Here are a few shots, and if you wanna try it and have a SLR... the settings are as follows. f8 @ 8-10 seconds @ ISO 100 on a tripod.
