Press Release

The world’s leading fair for pet supplies, Interzoo, is registering an outstanding exhibitor response: so far around 1,100 manufacturers have registered their participation. The worldwide pet supplies industry, ranging from small manufacturers right up to the global players, will present their comprehensive range of pet foods and accessories, grooming aids, garden and equestrian articles along with services from 17th to 20th May 2012. The growth in trade fair participation mainly comes from Europe, Asia and Australia.

“Even at this stage there are indications that Interzoo 2012 will once again be the world’s largest show for the pet supplies sector at which all the key sector players will come together. Of the previous total of around 1,100 registered companies, well over two-thirds come from abroad. We are also equally delighted about the clear increase in booked stand space and exhibitor numbers from Germany”, says Norbert Holthenrich, President of the honorary sponsor of the trade fair, German Pet Trade and Industry Association (Zentralverband Zoologischer Fachbetriebe Deutschlands e.V. – ZZF).

In Europe registrations for increased stand space and new exhibitors are mainly coming from the Netherlands, France, Poland and Czech Republic. Overseas the trade fair is registering high exhibitor participation figures, especially from Asia and Australia. Numerous countries will once again be presenting themselves within the framework of large pavilions, including Brazil, Canada, China, Great Britain, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Taiwan, the USA and recently Hong Kong.

Registration forms can still be obtained from:

During the World Veterinary Doctor Year, Pet South America celebrates 10 years alongside 20 thousand visitors.

The most successful and important pet market fair asserts itself through great new launchings and world trends.

The 10th edition of Pet South America, the main event for the pet and veterinary sectors in Latin America, surpassed its expectations in business terms, number of visitors and in positive results. The fair, which was held from October 18th – 20th at the Expo Center Norte, exhibited new trends and novelties for all tastes, from services to innovative products and equipment for the professionals from the sector. This year, the novelties focused on luxury, sustainability, health and technology. Products like golden shampoo, tracker and GPS, NASA-technology beds, educational toys, new diagnostic equipment, drugs, vaccines and food were a few highlights presented at Pet South America.

“We are quite satisfied with the positive effect of the fair and the business generated during these three days. Over these 10 years of excellent results, Pet South America asserts itself as the window of the pet and veterinary sector of Latin America providing the ideal space for generating new business and partnerships”, celebrates Ligia Amorim, Diretor-General of NurnbergMesse Brazil, Pet South America’s organizer.

Pet South America hosted Sebrae Pavilion for the first time, with 12 micro and small companies, Aquarium Keeping Space and the trimming competition Groom Brasil. The winner of Best in Show, the final of the competition that earned the title of best groomer in Brazil, was Maria Napoleao, winner of R$5000 and a kit of sponsors. Alongside the fair, the Specialties Congress was held, joining CONPAVEPA (the São Paulo Congress of Small Animal Clinical Veterinarians) and CONPAVET (Congress of Veterinary Medicine of Sao Paulo), the most important technical-scientific events of the sector in Latin America.

Innovations that have cost a lot of intellectual effort and money are usually presented for the first time at exhibitions. It is accordingly annoying when copies of products are offered on other stands or after the exhibition. The companies affected not only lose sales, but inferior counterfeits also damage the company’s image among the customers. The International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) estimates worldwide sales of counterfeits at some 360 billion US dollars for the product value alone. According to ICC, the total economic and social damage caused by counterfeits amounts to as much as 775 billion US dollars a year.

Protection rights and exhibition priority
Investing in the fight against counterfeiters not only protects the company, but also the customers who trust the company. Exhibitors should therefore register industrial protection rights for patents, utility models, trademarks or industrial designs before the exhibition and bring all documents that prove their protection rights (originals or certified copies of the protection rights certificate, any declarations to cease and desist or judgements already obtained against the counterfeiter, etc.) with them to Interzoo.

If required, the Interzoo promoter WZF GmbH together with NürnbergMesse GmbH also provides so-called priority certificates. This certificate confirms that an innovation has been first exhibited at the Interzoo exhibition. The date of the certificate serves as the date of application to the German patent and trademark office provided it is used to register a protection right after the exhibition within six months of presenting the product for the first time. This gives Interzoo exhibitors a time lead over counterfeiters. Exhibition priority is recognized by many patent and trademark offices. Information about the respective regulations can be obtained from a lawyer specializing in the protection of industrial property rights.

Upshot
Industrial property rights protection cannot actually prevent counterfeits, but does enable the owner of the rights to stop the production, sale, supply and advertising of the counterfeit products and claim damages for any goods already sold, if necessary, with the help of a lawyer. If required, the border seizure procedure offered by many customs authorities can also be used for asserting protection rights.

By JANE E. ALLEN, ABC News Medical Unit

Aug. 31, 2011

Tropical coral from Australia’s Great Barrier Reef contains natural UV blockers that might one day come in a pill that protects our eyes and skin from the sun’s ravages, researchers say.

But don’t toss your high-SPF lotions and creams yet. If all goes as planned, a tablet that would protect people from damaging ultraviolet radiation is probably about five years away, said Paul Long, a senior lecturer in pharmaceutical science at King’s College London.

Long leads a three-year research project, financed by the British government, focused on sun-shielding compounds in Acropora microphthalma coral. He and his fellow researchers have been trying to unravel the biochemical secrets of these chemicals, extracted from coral samples gathered during night dives.

“What we have found is that the algae living within the coral makes a compound that we think is transported to the coral, which then modifies it into a sunscreen for the benefit of both the coral and the algae,” Long said in a statement from King’s College, which issued a news release and video about the research. “Not only does this protect them both from UV damage, but we have seen that fish that feed on the coral also benefit from this sunscreen protection, so it is clearly passed up the food chain.”

Because Acropora microphthalma coral is endangered, the scientists first must create a synthetic version of the coral compounds, which could be tested on human skin samples. Long has suggested scientists might find a ready supply in excess skin discarded by plastic surgeons after tummy tucks. Only after scientists learn how the compound affects skin cells could they then begin developing a pill that would protect skin throughout the body, as well as the eyes, which also are sensitive to the effects of UV light.

Long and his colleagues began thinking a pill might work based upon observations of small fish eating coral, “like Nemo” in the animated movie “Finding Nemo,” “and then larger fish would eat the smaller fish, so these compounds pass up the food chain.”

One important consideration for researchers involves determining how the compounds’ UV-blocking properties might interfere with the body’s production of Vitamin D, often called the sunshine vitamin. Vitamin D comes either from exposure to sunlight, or from dietary supplements.

Long’s longtime collaborators are J. Malcolm Shick, a marine sciences professor at the University of Maine in Orono, and Walter Dunlap, a marine research scientist at the Australian Institute for Marine Science. In 1986, Dunlap reported the discovery of UV-absorbing sunscreens in shallow-water coral. The three have published several papers on the biochemical processes and genes responsible for Acropora’s response to solar radiation, as well as the phenomenon of coral bleaching. Long also said a long-term goal of the research project is to help make crops in Third World countries more able to withstand strong UV light.

A pill based on coral’s natural UV blockers wouldn’t be the first sunscreen pill to offer protection from the inside out. A dietary supplement called Heliocare contains green tea, beta-carotene and Polypodium leucotomos, a tropical fern extract long used for psoriasis and eczema. However, dermatologists say its skin-protective antioxidants don’t take the place of topical sunscreens, but may make the sun less vulnerable to UV damage. A bottle of 60 Heliocare pills runs about $50.

This undated image provided by seaphotos.com shows the face of a Histiophryne psychedelica, a highly atypical a psychedelic frogfish (Antennaridae) first described in 2009 from a handful of specimens photographed in Ambon, Indonesia in 2008. It has a vestigial, non-functional lure (illicium/esca) and probably traps its prey inside coral holes and crevices or within coral rubble. The unusual pattern is thought to mimic the appearance of several kinds of hermatypic coral, and while varying slightly from individual to individual, appears to remain unchanged throughout the life of each individual.

This image, taken in 2002, about one mile deep near a huge underwater volcano near Monterey Bay, provided by NOAA shows this strange marine animal, thought to be a new species that has yet to be described or named. It is a type of mollusk, called nudibranch, that sheds its shell early in life. Scientists think there are millions of species, like this one, that have yet to be named or even discovered.

In the words of Dr. Alex Ploeg, Secretary General of Ornamental Fish International, “Participating in Aquarama every two years is like coming home to meet long-time friends and business partners. Aquarama 2011 was a very successful meeting of the industry…good for business and good for contacts.” For Malaysian exhibitor, Bukit Merah Aquaculture, Aquarama 2011 (26-29 May, Suntec Singapore) was “an excellent show”, while first-time exhibitor, Doshe Aquaristik, from Germany, “was very impressed with this exhibition”, and Philippine company, Animalia 2000 Ichiban Inc., felt it was “a fantastic show”.

These sentiments were echoed by many of those who attended this year’s glittering event. The organisers were encouraged by the fact that, despite the still-deep economic crisis affecting many countries and regions where substantial numbers of traditional attendees and exhibitors are based, Aquarama 2011 still pulled in the international trade from all corners of the globe. No fewer than 23 countries were represented among the exhibitors, while trade visitors came from an impressive total of 73 countries.

Just as in 2009, there was a ‘good-feel’ factor among the exhibitors, who maintained that the quality of the visitors and their genuine interest in doing business, more than made up for the more modest attendance figures. In their words, quality is always worth more than quantity.

Were this not to be the case, there’s no way that around 55% of this year’s exhibitors would have either already signed contracts for 2013, or taken options to do so. Equally, if the level of business had not matched expectations, no company in its right mind would reserve a larger booth for 2013, as some important exhibitors have already done.
Aquarama is, of course, much more than just a wide-ranging display of virtually every aquatic product you can think of. It is this, of course (and impressively so), but it also includes an unparalleled International Fish Competition, which this year received a staggering 1,355 entries, three brand new competitive elements, including a Freshwater nano Tank Competition, a free trade seminar programme consisting of three sessions and presented by top international speakers (deemed by many to be the best-ever staged at Aquarama), a fully subscribed Fish Farm Visit…and much else besides.

In the end, the organisers were justifiably pleased with the results. As Michiel Kruse, Managing Director of UBM Asia Singapore commented, “Organising an event as complex and important for the industry as Aquarama, always presents a stiff challenge. We are therefore delighted that the efforts of our hardworking team and the invaluable and unflinching support of the industry, has made it possible for us to stage an event worthy of the name ‘Aquarama’, especially at such a difficult time in world economics.”

To access further details of Aquarama 2011, and see a selection of this year’s photographs, visit the show’s website www.aquarama.com.sg. For details and reservations relating to Aquarama 2013, please contact Doris Woo, Sales Manager at doris.woo@ubm.com or Adeline Chang, Project Executive at adeline.chang@ubm.com
