Summertime June Fishing at it's best

This past week has produced some epic fishing adventures on the Reel Candy. Fishing almost everyday our anglers have enjoyed a mix bag of species. Along with all the bonita and sharks, our guests last week landed 3 out of 5 sailfish, several blackfin tunas, a nice wahoo, a few mahi up to 20 pounds, and jumped off a blue marlin. Plus some awesome snook on an inshore trip. Not a bad week!

Our Bonita Bonanza Reel Candy Boat Tournament has yielded almost 75 anglers. The largest Bonita for this month was 18.2 pounds caught by Ric Stern. Ric will receive a Tee Shirt from Gray Taxidermy and will be entered in next months totals for the Grand Prize of $1000. The top five places will receive prizes from our sponsors, Ande Line Co., Black Bart Lures, Gray Taxidermy, and Stingray Outfitters.

Since hurricane Matthew, the wind has been relentless. The Reel Candy, has been docked at Sailfish Marina on Singer Island in Palm Beach. This allows us to avoid the dangerous Jupiter Inlet conditions, and provides us maximum opportunities to fish those questionable days that we would normally cancel in Jupiter.

The last two weeks the mahi bite has been real good with most fish in the 8-10 pound range. Most of these fish have been caught trolling small lures or sea witches on bait. The sailfish are arriving with this weeks fishing trips providing our anglers with multiple hookups on each charter. Kite fishing has been our preferred method with as many as 4 sailfish bites at one time. The Reel Candy makes every effort to promote the well being of the billfish population. We handle each caught fish carefully, and tag as many fish as possible for the Billfish Foundation. Although we understand every angler would like to have a picture with their catch holding their prized fish. We can only do this when the ideal conditions present themselves for a healthy released fish. Tagging does not interfere with the longevity of a billfish lifespan.

The Reel Candy Team is already booked for two Sailfish tournaments for 2016 - 2017. We limit the number of tournament entries in order to have sufficient dates available for our anglers that just want to enjoy a day on the water. "There's more to Reel Candy than just Fishing".

Since this last full moon the summer wahoo bite has been awesome south of the Jupiter Inlet. Here's a couple pictures of happy wahoo anglers.

Last week anglers fishing with the Reel Candy and Reel Candy II went 3 for 4 on sailfish while trolling. Congratulations to Mike McCarthy, on his first ever sail.

Epic Bonita fishing is still fantastic along with those anglers with the desire to battle a big shark.

September is one of the best months of the year to swordfish. We have a few daytime swordfish charters booked already just before the moon. Since this is prime time we kept a couple open days for our guests who would like to experience an offshore trip for monster swords, so call now and schedule your trip. The first local major sailfish tournament for the season is in the books with 14 boats catching 85 fish in the two day event. Congratulations to Fishheads Tackle Sponsor and LoQueSea for their fist place finish.

The Reel Candy has been fishing everyday the weather permits. This is the best year for catching dolphin (mahi mahi) that we have experienced for several years. Remember "they taste so nice they named them twice"

They sailfish are showing up and we have been catching them with both trolling or dredge fishing and kite fishing live bait. We have some open dates next week and a couple between Christmas and New Years.

Sailfish - Sailfish - Sailfish!

Each year we wait enthusiastically for the yearly Sailfish migration. It is already beginning and on some charters we have seen double digit sails. The dolphin (mahi) bite has been fairly steady with lots of bait extending from the Jupiter Inlet to the famed Sailfish Alley. Along with Sailfish and dolphin we have been catching some sharks, blackfin tunas, kingfish, wahoo and some keeper cobia.

The newly remodeled La Quinta Inn in Jupiter has extended our contract for discounted room rates. Luxury rooms are available well under the standard advertised pricing. Also, Jupiter has some of the best dining facilities anywhere, such as the Jetties Restaurant (home to Reel Candy II), the Coola Fish Bar at Legacy Place, and the Kee Grill in Juno, just minutes from the boat. Meet Chef Frank Mazzarella & Family

Frank Mazzarella, a native of South Florida, always had a passion for cooking and the ocean.

In 2003, Frank graduated from Johnson & Wales University, North Miami, with an A.S. in Culinary Arts. While vacationing in the Abacos he met Suzanne Sweeting, who was able to arrange a Guest Chef appearance at the Abaco Inn, to cook up some specials for some of the locals on Elbow Cay. It just so happened that her parents were among the guests who were able to indulge in some of my cuisine.

Her father approached Frank about working for him for the season. "Work for you?", Frank said. That was when Peter Sweeting told Frank that he was a partner at The Abaco Beach Resort.

On May 8, 2005, Frank found himself in Abaco on a temporary work permit for the season, working as the Sous Chef. Exactly three months later when his permit was up, the Executive Chef of the resort decided to leave. It was then that Frank's seasonal position, turned into a full time position.

In November of 2006 Frank & Suzanne were married in Hopetown. In September 2008, Suzanne and Frank had their first beautiful daughter. Recently they were blessed with another baby girl, Sarah.

There are many challenges to living and working on an island, Frank looks forward to the challenge of turning Angler's into a first class Bahamian Restaurant.

Since 2005 Chef Frank and the Reel Candy team has joined to offer our friends many unique seafood receipes for our emails. Frank has prepared many elegant dinners for our guests, so make sure you visit him at the Abaco Beach Resort and mention the Reel Candy!

Doug Bean 1942 - 2013

Douglas R. Bean, 71, of Nokomis, FL, died on Sept. 7, 2013 after months of bravely battling cancer.

Doug was born March 22, 1942 in Milwaukee, WI. He and his wife Laurel have been friends for many years. Doug was able to fish with us in many places including Mexico and the Bahamas. An excellent angler, he was also very talented and produced our fishing videos. He will be deeply missed. RIP our friend!

CAPTAIN'S CORNER

This June we connected with some nice blue marlin while fishing the Abacos. Upon returning to Jupiter, Florida, we were successful hooking up massive sharks for our fishing guest. Most were well over 200 pounds with a couple fish touching the 600 mark. A couple trips to the Walkers Cay area for tuna and dolphin finished our summer in true fashion.

Our next Bahamas Trip is November 1st for early wahoo, and another November 15th which will be our last trip until early spring. Look for our weekly fishing report on the new Reel Candy website!

The bite has been consistant outside the Jupiter Inlet and the sailfish are making their annual showing. We still have a few open days, so book now for an exciting kite fishing trip.

We also partnered again this year with Pine Ridge Plantation, Florida's premier Hunt Club. Our Reel Candy guests have the opportunity to fish and chase wild game the entire winter. Although wing shooting is world class, wild boar and turkey hunting, makes for an exciting day.

From Chef Frank

I call this my

Blackened Rub...

This is a very easy mix and can be applied to any fish, meat or chicken dish that you would like to add a little kick to.

Ingredients:
4 Tbsp. of Caribbean Jerk Seasoning
1 Tbsp. of Paprika
1 Tsp. Chili Powder
1/4 Tsp. Cayenne Pepper
1/4 Tsp. Sea Salt

Mix the ingredients well and store along with all of your other spices. This Recipe can be duplicated several times over, and if you don't want it to be too spicy, just omit the Cayenne Pepper. After applying rub to your favorite fish, sear very quickly in a skillet or frying pan with just a touch of oil on high heat and finish in the oven at 350 degrees. When searing be sure not to leave it in the pan too long, because it does turn black very quickly.

The Reel Candy is back in Jupiter after a busy June in the Bahamas,

marlin fishing in the Abacos. Although the fishing was good, it was not as good as we were experiencing up near Walkers and Grand Cay.

We have been catching a few sailfish for this time of the year, mostly on live bait. Our early morning and late evening bite has been mostly shark fishing. It's exciting and they are BIG! The Reel Candy team will be in Jupiter for the summer chasing big sharks and the full moon swords. Join us for an exciting memorable trip.

Congratulations to our mate who is now Captain Chris. Both he and Eric will be snook and tarpon fishing the Badfish flats boat in Stuart and Jupiter.

Fishing so far this month has been beyond expectations. The dolphin ( mahi) off Jupiter Inlet has steadily improved. Our Corner trip was very worthwhile. Although we made the trip on the full moon we still caught our first blue marlin of the season. Our crew caught a bunch of dolphin with a couple touching the 25# mark.
The yellowfin tuna bite has been the best that we have seen in the last couple of years. Some fish have been caught over 100 pounds but most are averaging 40-70. Dolphin Bite is Picking Up! Plenty of BIG Sharks Too

The Reel Candy has been fishing consistently this past month which doesn't allow for much time on the computer. The dolphin bite has picked up considerably, with a few sailfish still lingering. We've been picking up some big bull sharks, and hooked a large hammerhead the other day.

Yellowfin tuna have been making a showing on the corner. Our friend Clark on the Funny Feeling II caught 7 last Wednesday between 50 and 65 pounds. Our first trip there will be April 26th.

We will be in San Salvador, the 19th of this month and then on the to Dominican Republic for a short trip. Hopefully we will have some good things to report.

May should be great fishing here in Jupiter and we are excited about Fishing the Reel Candy at home this season. Fishing has improved with the cold fronts we've experienced the last few weeks. Dolphin (mahi) have made an appearance with 6 or more being caught on each trip. There are still some sailfish. We were 2 for 4 yesterday kite fishing, with 2 ladies from Alabama connecting for their first.

The Square Grouper Tiki Bar & Castaway's Marina has been very busy, but there is still plenty of parking on or around Love Street. Visit the new website at http://squaregrouper.net/.

Kate landed this kingfish while fishing the Reel Candy is rough seas. Today we were able to get out the Jupiter Inlet but as the wind increased this morning the inlet was kick'in butt, so we ended up at Lake Worth Inlet. Plenty of sailfish and sharks. Our Bluewater All Girls fishing team with Capt Rob Moore and Chris Watkins in the cockpit did not loose a fish hooking and catching 11 mahi and a blackfin before 1 pm. Our 3rd tournament to Benefit Breat Cancer hosted by Grandslam Tackle and Square Grouper Tiki Bar.

As of yesterday the mahi bite has picked up since hurrricane Sandy with a few Sailfish making a showing.

In case of bad weather or for a change between fishing days, we are able to offer our guests the opportunity to hunt a private plantation with your own guide. These hunts include turkey, dove, quail, pheasants, and wild hogs. While on the plantation you may also shoot clay pigeons at the shooting facility with all new wobble machines. All this for the same price as a half day of fishing, and includes a full lunch, transportation and licenses. No gun, no problem, rentals are available. “Fish a day, or hunt a day”.

Jupiter Swordfishing & Bahamas Trips

The Reel Candy crew is finishing our Abaco Marlin Fishing tour tomorrow in Boat Harbour. Although this has been one of our busiest seasons, the marlin have not cooperated as in past years. We did had 4 fishing guests catch their first blue marlin. We had several pull off their blue after watching it jump for a while.

We would like to THANK , Al and Brenda of the Bahama Billfish Championship, Silver Airways, Treasure Cay Marina, Treasure Coast Propeller and Ande Line Company for all their support. Of course ALL our fishing guests made this season a memorable one.

We finished in Treasure ending our fishing there with 2 yellowfin, a wahoo, a couple of skipjacks on steroids, leaving a ton of grass offshore.

July 5th finds us heading to Jupiter with our first home charter of the summer on the 9th. We have observed the most yellowfin tuna offshore than we have seen in 5 years. If you are interested in making a trip to Walkers Cay or Bimini, give us a call. Our swordfish Captain caught 3 swords one night last week and says the bite is strong. If you have an interest let us know. Now is the time while the water is flat calm offshore. Looking forward to seeing all our billfishing guest for our upcoming sailfish season. Book early!

We are very sorry to hear about the news of Jose. He was always there to assist and help with his vast knowledge of fishing. Not only did he help us during our ownership of Dona Bay Outfittters, he fished with us and did a TV show in the Bahamas with us.

This week set all kinds of records for sailfish tournaments. Over 1800 sailfish were caught in 2 tournaments. The Reel Candy team was busy with charters, with 7 of our guests catching their first ever sailfish over a four day period. These fish will probably be around for a while with the warm weather this weekend. Another cold front later in the week will set off another record bite. We have a few dates open this month and February on the Reel Candy. Also in February, Candy and I, will celebrate Valentines Day, fishing the all new 70' Viking "Fa La Me" with Robbie Moore in Isla Mujeres, Mexico. We can bring 4 paying guests along. Interested? Join us for a Tournament unlike any Tournament you have ever seen! The 3rd Annual Bluewater Babes Fish For A Cure Tournament will be September 30- October 1, 2011 be sure not to miss this one of a kind event! Fish For A Cure is an all ladies fishing tournament benefitting local breast and ovarian cancer patients; however this Tournament is so much more than fishing! Each “team” has a theme, there is a boat decorating contest, costume contest, and cocktail contest as well as a male mate auction! This Tournament is an event for everyone! It kick’s off with the Captain’s Meeting Sept. 30 at the Square Grouper Tiki Bar in Jupiter and wraps up with an amazing party Saturday evening Oct. 1 with water gun fights and live music in between! This is an event you do not want to miss!

The Reel Candy - We Are Home! Sitting by the Tiki Bar Reminiscing

Wow what a season!
Since leaving Stuart in February for San Salvador the Reel Candy team fished the Bahama Island chain experiencing some of the best offshore fishing available on rod and reel. WAHOO, MAHI, MARLIN February and March we caught wahoo from Chub Cay to San Sal. San Sal again proved that monster wahoo cruise the waters around the island. The Reel Candy then fished an Invitational tournament in Crooked Island, Samana, Rum and back to San Sal. We took 2nd place with a couple blue marlin (5-4-6 in 5 days), several dolphin, lots of yellowfin tuna, with a couple over 60 pounds. We fished the Invitational Azur International in Bimini and took 1st in this fun tournament. We were back to Cat Island, seeing several blues, then onto Harbour Island for some downtime. Candy joined us and we headed for Marsh Harbour. Although the bite, was tapering off by the time we got there, we were able to see and catch a few blues, for first time anglers.
From Marsh we were off to Treasure, where we caught Perry his blue marlin on his 20th wedding anniversary. Treasure Cay, Bahamas is always one of our favorite places to visit. Patrick Fetsch, the GM at Treasure does an excellent job providing a "home away from home". We finished our season in Grand Cay, fishing with Craig and Joe. It was fun to just lay back for a while and catch yellowtails, sharks, grouper, and muttons. After the storm "Brett" we set course with the Reel Candy for a short run to West End, Old Bahama Bay, for those always refreshing rumrunners. Waking up the next morning to flat mirror like seas, we were off to Jupiter. Looks like swording fishing is in the forecast the rest of August with some open dates available. We booked a couple charters on the t/t Reel Candy 26', catching bonitas, mahi, and a sail or two. Visit us at the Seaport Marina just inside the Jupiter Inlet, beside the Federal Highway drawbridge, whenever you are in the area. Candy and I settled in Jupiter when we first started sailfishing several years ago. We are close to the famous sailfish alley, the stream, and many other fish holding structure, allowing you the maximum time to fish. We feel fortunate having the opportunity to return to Jupiter and be close to the West Palm Beach International Airport.

We are also able to offer a one night stay for two at a local Jupiter Hotel FREE just minutes from the marina when fishing the following day with us.
