For a few hours Baseball is all that exists. And I mean this in a bigger picture kind of way. The way the troubles of the day disappear when playing a guitar, or practicing yoga, or going fishing, or running, or folding laundry.

It wasn't until my boys started playing baseball that I really understood why this game has been called America's favorite pastime. The calls in the game seem to have a kind of wisdom applicable in real life, and even the rules seem to echo the "rules of life."

Simple calls like "SAFE!" or "OUT!" can pretty much sum things up. The advice called to the players from the coaches and fans also seem to have a philosophical ring to them.

HIT A HOMERUN!

Baseball ready!
Nice level swing!
Eye on the ball!
Only swing at the good ones!

Make him pitch to you!

SLIIIIIDE!!!

A hot dog at the ball park is better than steak at the Ritz.
- Humphrey Bogart

Looking at the ball going over the fence
isn't going to help. - Hank Aaron

Music: Centerfield, John Fogerty

P.S. Besides, I'm a mom. I know how to multi-task.

The beat and the sound of this Shins song, that accompanies this video, is perfect, but the words don't fit. (Song: Pink Bullets, by the Shins)

Baseball Movie 1

The regular season ended a couple of weeks ago and now we are playing the post season tournament. Last night was an upset. Our team beat the number one team in the league (our team was ranked fifth) and now we go on to play one more tournament game next week, against the number two ranked team. No one thinks we'll beat them. But if the Red Sox can win a World Series....

These video snippets were filmed with an older model Olympus Camedia 4000 Zoom, and edited in iMovie.
