I'm a big fan of Amanda Seyfried. I even pushed through Jennifer's Body because she was in it. Was it worth it? Well.. I guess so.. because she was brilliant as usual. Vincent Kartheiser and Cillian Murphy will also be starring in this film and I've gotta say that as a young teen, Vinny Kartheiser was my teen celebrity crush. I would go CRAZY over him when everyone was crazy over the likes of JTT (Jonathan Taylor Thomas -- for all you kiddies/oldies out there who don't know). Alex Pettyfer and Olivia Wilde are two other pretty faces in this film.. but acting wise, they can be pretty drab.

Studio execs are really pushing this one to the young generation with all these pretty faces, huh? But I don't know, perhaps it's gonna be good. Will I watch it? Yeah, I guess I would. If someone's paying... Hahaha!

Synopsis: Guillermo del Toro presents DON'T BE AFRAID OF THE DARK, a horror film starring Katie Holmes, Guy Pearce and Bailee Madison, directed by Troy Nixey. Based on the 1973 telefilm that del Toro believes is the scariest TV production ever made, the story follows Sally (Madison), a young girl who moves to Rhode Island to live with her father (Pearce) and his new girlfriend (Holmes) in the 19th-century mansion they are restoring. While exploring the house, Sally starts to hear voices coming from creatures in the basement whose hidden agenda is to claim her as one of their own. Akin to del Toro's PAN'S LABYRINTH, DON'T BE AFRAID OF THE DARK focuses on a young girl's struggle against menacing and terrifying forces. FilmDistrict will release the film on August 26th.

Bailee Madison stars in Don't Be Afraid of the Dark

If it's anything like Del Toro's Pan's Labyrinth, then I am SO in! I'm not a big fan of Katie Holmes but Bailee Madison looks every bit a best actress here. I can't wait!

Paranormal Activity 3 (2011) Movie Trailer

Okay, so I haven't watched the second one, so I have no comment on this upcoming 3rd Paranormal Activity film. All I know is, "Katie" will be back in this third film.. so.. yeah...

Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close (2011/12) Movie Trailer

Synopsis: Based on the acclaimed novel of the same name, "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close" tells the story of one young boy's journey from heartbreaking loss to the healing power of self-discovery, set against the backdrop of the tragicevents of September 11. Eleven-year-old Oskar Schell is an exceptional child: amateur inventor, Francophile, pacifist. And after finding a mysterious key that belonged to his father, who died in the World Trade Center on 9/11, he embarks on an exceptional journey--an urgent, secret search through the five boroughs of New York. As Oskar roams the city, he encounters a motley assortment of humanity, who are all survivors in their own ways. Ultimately, Oskar's journey ends where it began, but with the solace of that most human experience: love.

Tom Hanks and Thomas Horn in a still from Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close

The director and cast of this film have me SOLD. I will definitely be waiting on bated breath for this film. Academy Award winner Stephen Daldry (The Hours, The Reader, Billy Elliot) bring together Tom Hanks, Sandra Bullock, Viola Davis, John Goodman, James Gandolfini in what I believe is my most anticipated movie of 2012. Definitely A-list heavyweights here and there's nothing like a good drama that turns me into a puddleface. There's no saying when it will reach Malaysian shores, but when it comes, I'll be waiting in line! :) Can't wait!

Trespass (2011) Movie Trailer

Cast: Nicolas Cage, Nicole Kidman, Ben Mendelsohn, Cam Gigandet, Liana Liberato, Jordana Spiro, Dash Mihok, Emily Meade, Nico Tortorella
Run Time: 91 mins
MPAA Rating: Rated R for violence and terror, pervasive language and some brief drug use
Official Site: http://www.trespass-the-movie.com/
Release date: 14 October 2011 (USA), 20 October 2011 (Malaysia)

Check out the trailer for Trespass below:

Synopsis: In a private, wealthy community, priority is placed on security and no exception is made for the Miller family's estate. Behind their pristine walls and manicured gardens, Kyle (Nicolas Cage), a fast-talking businessman, has entrusted the mansion's renovation to his stunning wife, Sarah (Nicole Kidman). But between making those big decisions and keeping tabs on their defiant teenage daughter (Liana Liberato), Sarah often finds herself distracted by a young, handsome worker (Cam Gigandet) at their home.

Nicole Kidman and Cam Gigandet in Trespass

Nothing is what it seems, and it will take a group of cold-blooded criminals led by Elias (Ben Mendelsohn), who have been planning a vicious home invasion for months, to bring the Miller family together. When they storm the manor, everyone is tangled up in betrayal, deception, temptation and scheming. Kyle, Sarah and Avery will take the ultimate risk to make it out with their lives - and their family - intact.

This is just one of those suspense/thriller dramas that I know will keep me at the edge of my seat although the plot will be fairly predictable. The difference is, the award winning Joel Schumacher is at the helm of this film and I'm expecting good stuff. The director of some of my favourite films -- St. Elmo's Fire, The Lost Boys, A Time to Kill -- to name a few, is definitely among the reasons that I will give this film a chance. I know most of you think that Nicolas Cage is ridiculous, but I still adore that guy. Same goes for Nicole Kidman as well. Cam Gigandet has been in a number of films these couple of years that if my sister asks me again what his name is, I am seriously gonna spaz out on her. LOL!

However, I did not watch the trailer, you know how I feel about trailers, right? So just by going on the cast, director and plot, the answer is yes, I would still check this film out! :)

What's Your Number? Synopsis: Anna Faris is Ally Darling, who after reading a magazine article that leads her to believe she's going to be forever alone, begins a wild search for the best "ex" of her life. Ally's hunky new neighbor Colin (Chris Evans) helps her track down her exes, in exchange for Ally helping Colin avoid his.

I definitely want to check this one out! I LOVE Anna Faris and she is just darling! :) She's one of the best young comedians of this generation, aside from Emma Stone and I think this will be hilarious. Not to mention the ever so hot Chris Evans is just so drool worthy. Yes, he tickles my fancy. :P

Synopsis: Antarctica -- an extraordinary continent of awesome beauty. It is also home to an isolated outpost where a discovery full of scientific possibility becomes a mission of survival when an alien is unearthed by a crew of international scientists. The shape-shifting creature, accidentally unleashed at this marooned colony, has the ability to turn itself into a perfect replica of any living being. It can look just like you or me, but inside, it remains inhuman. In the thriller The Thing, paranoia spreads like an epidemic among a group of researchers as they're infected, one by one, by a mystery from another planet.

Paleontologist Kate Lloyd (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) has traveled to the desolate region for the expedition of her lifetime. Joining a Norwegian scientific team that has stumbled across an extraterrestrial ship buried in the ice, she discovers an organism that seems to have died in the crash eons ago. But it is about to wake up. When a simple experiment frees the alien from its frozen prison, Kate must join the crew's pilot, Carter (Joel Edgerton), to keep it from killing them off one at a time. And in this vast, intense land, a parasite that can mimic anything it touches will pit human against human as it tries to survive and flourish.

The Thing serves as a prelude to John Carpenter's classic 1982 film of the same name.

Synopsis: A gritty, white-knuckle, action ride set in the near-future where the sport of boxing has gone high-tech, Real Steel stars Hugh Jackman as Charlie Kenton, a washed-up fighter who lost his chance at a title when 2000-pound, 8-foot-tall steel robots took over the ring. Now nothing but a small-time promoter, Charlie earns just enough money piecing together low-end bots from scrap metal to get from one underground boxing venue to the next. When Charlie hits rock bottom, he reluctantly teams up with his estranged son Max (Dakota Goyo) to build and train a championship contender. As the stakes in the brutal, no-holds-barred arena are raised, Charlie and Max, against all odds, get one last shot at a comeback.

Hugh Jackman and Dakota Goyo in Real Steel

I definitely am a fan of Hugh Jackman and I do respect Shawn Levy's directorial work -- Cheaper by the Dozen, Just Married, Pink Panther, both installments of Night at the Museum as well as last years comedy Date Night. Perhaps he will bring some laughs into this action driven film about boxing bots, but I don't know.. if I get an invitation to the screening, then yeah, why the hell not? But if I don't, then perhaps this is one of those films I'll catch on DVD instead.

The Three Musketeers (2011) Movie Trailer

Synopsis: Based on Alexandre Dumas' classic novel comes a big-screen action adventure update of The Three Musketeers, conceived and shot in state-of-the-art 3D. They are known as Porthos, Athos, and Aramis--three elite warriors who serve the King of France as his best Musketeers. After discovering an evil conspiracy to overthrow the King, the Musketeers come across a young, aspiring hero -- D'Artagnan -- and take him under their wing. Together, the four embark on a dangerous mission to foil the plot that not only threatens the Crown, but the future of Europe itself.

(L-R: Ray Stevenson as Porthos, Matthew McFadyen as Athos, Logan Lerman as D'artagnan and Luke Evans as Aramis)

I was already in love with the 1993 remake of The Three Musketeers directed by Stephen Herek (Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure, The Mighty Ducks, Mr. Holland's Opus) starring Charlie Sheen, Kiefer Sutherland, Oliver Platt and Chris O'Donnell and the villain played by Tim Curry but I would definitely love to check this one out. The Three Musketeers itself is legendary in itself and has had numerous remakes throughout the decades, so it is STILL worth giving a shot, I believe.

One thing I will say though, is, there is no beating the soundtrack for the 1993 remake of The Three Musketeers -- All For Love sung by Bryan Adams, Rod Stewart, and Sting. The title was inspired by the Musketeers' motto: "All for one, and one for all". Gotta say, that was one epic soundtrack.

Vampire Diaries S03E02 - The Hybrid Episode Song List

Warning: Spoilers ahead!

Sorry for the late posting, you guys! I know, I know.. the Vampire Diaries S03E02, The Hybrid, was out last Thursday, but I've been busy. I'm in the midst of moving to a new house.. yada yada yada..

The song I'd like to feature from this episode's song list would have to be Jason Walker's Echo. Remember that pivotal scene between Stefan and Elena in episode 6 of Season 1 with Jason Walker's song "Down" playing? Loved it! And this week, that Damon/Elena scene was just so... oomph! (for lack of a better word). However it does make me think that the best parts of Vampire Diaries are always the last five minutes of it.

Anyways, here are the rest of the songs in this week's episode of Vampire Diaries - The Hybrid in order of appearance are:
1. Delta Spirit "Parade"
2. Portugal The Man "Got It All (This Can't Be Living Now)"
3. Smith Westerns "Still New"
4. Joy Formidable "A Heavy Abacus"
5. Jason Walker "Echo"

How about that episode, huh? Continuing from where they left off from the first episode, it was all about lost causes this week. Elena still trying to save lost cause Stefan while helping out lost cause Rick at the same time. Then Damon who refuses to help Elena ends up helping her anyway, because he's a lost cause lovesick puppy and would do anything for Elena.

Damon: "Okay! But we're out of here before the moon is full and I'm werewolf bait... unless you want to relive that whole deathbed kissing thing".

Not forgetting Jeremy and Matt trying to help lost cause Vicki who's actually not so much of a lost cause since apparently she wants to come back. Interesting. Then how does dead Anna play into this?

There was also that drama between Tyler and his mom. And Bill and Caroline? You know what? I'm so over the council trying to get rid of the vampires in Mystic Falls. Keep up, already! They're the least of their problems! Oh.. and where's Bonnie??

And then there were the hybrids. Hybrids gone rabid. Why didn't it work?? Klaus breaks the curse, kills the werewolf, vampire and doppleganger..... wait.... hold up! The doppleganger didn't die. Soooo, Klaus doesn't get his perfect hybrids and he's suspecting something. Ohhh I like where this is going!

Well, till the next Thursday.
Cast:

Zooey Deschanel (500 Days of Summer) plays Jessica "Jess" Day, an offbeat and adorable girl in her late 20s who, after a bad breakup, moves in with three single guys. Goofy, positive, vulnerable and honest to a fault, Jess has faith in people, even when she shouldn't. Although she's dorky and awkward, she's comfortable in her own skin. More prone to friendships with women, she's not used to hanging with the boys - especially at home.

Jake Johnson (No Strings Attached) plays Nick, who is the most grounded. He had big plans for life, but somewhere along the way, he stopped caring and became a bartender. Usually the smartest guy in the room, he has an uncanny knack for reading people and uses humor to deflect everyone and everything.

Max Greenfield (Ugly Betty) plays Schmidt, a hustling young professional who fancies himself a modern-day Casanova. Though his heart is usually in the right place, he's always scheming ways to climb the social ladder and is driven by an immature and almost obsessive urge to be on "the scene." Viewing Jess as a gateway into the elusive female mind, as well as a personal project, Schmidt encourages the guys to bring Jess into the apartment.

Damon Wayans Jr. (My Wife and Kids) plays Coach, a former high school athlete who currently makes his living as a personal trainer. Set in his ways and with a take-it-or-leave-it attitude to dating, Coach is most comfortable when he's in the gym. Coach will only appear in the pilot episode.

Lamorne Morris (BrainRush) plays Winston Bishop a professional basketball player who returns from his career in Croatia and was subletting his apartment to Coach.

Hannah Simone (Beautiful People) plays Cece, Jess' childhood best friend -- a deadpan, somewhat cynical model who blossomed after outgrowing her promiscuous adolescent years. She has the street smarts Jess lacks and spends a lot of time doling out no-nonsense relationship advice that only a professional model could give

(L-R: Jake Johnson, Max Greenfield and Damon Wayans Jr. -- cast of New Girl)

Unfortunately, in the second episode, Coach will be kicked out of the apartment and replaced by a new character named Winston. The show will explain this change by stating that Winston's name is on the lease and Coach was subletting the apartment from him. The change is due to the renewal of the show Happy Endings for a second season after it was presumed to be over. Damon Wayans, Jr., who played Coach, is a cast member on Happy Endings and could not remain in the cast of New Girl after its renewal.

Damon Wayans Jr., Zooey Deschanel, Jake Johnson, Max Greenfield and Hannah Simone star in "New Girl."

I will definitely be looking forward to this show. I adore Zooey Deschanel and I think they have a magnetic and awesome cast. The trailer looked fun and I can see this as the new "Friends" so to speak. I'm just a little bummed that Damon Wayans Jr won't be continuing his role as Coach in this show. He always brings a great dynamic in all the shows he plays.

Bridesmaids was released in Malaysia on September 8th but thanks to Bella and Nuffnang, I got to watch the special screening on 16th August at Cathay Cineplex @ eCurve. So thanks again, Bella! :)

It was a hilarious film with silly and poignant moments. Something you'd very much expect from Judd Apatow (40-Year Old Virgin, Knocked Up, Superbad, Pineapple Express) who served as producer for this film. If you're looking for a lighthearted film to watch with your girlfriends, this would serve as a good watch. Even guys seemed to enjoy this movie a lot. This would be one film a guy wouldn't mind watching compared to other "chick flicks".

(L-R: Wendi McLendon-Covey, Rose Byrne, Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Maya Rudolph and Ellie Kemper in Bridesmaids)

My favourite character besides Kristen Wigg, was Megan played by Melissa Mccarthy -- who just won an Emmy earlier this week for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for her tv show, Mike and Molly. Yay Melissa!! :) Very well deserved win.

I just wish there were parts of the movie that were more developed and the characters of Rita and Becca, played by Wendi McLendon-Covey and Ellie Kemper were hugely underdeveloped in my honest opinion. There were some moments in the film that I was laughing uncontrollably, while there were just others that were not really Ha-Ha funny.. but still, it's a good movie for laughs.

Verdict: Worth watching. Some say it's the female version of Hangover. I wouldn't go so far as to put in on par. There were parts where the continuity was a little off and there were parts that could be better... YET it was strangely satisfying. I know I wouldn't mind watching it again as I rather enjoyed it.

Vampire Diaries is my guilty pleasure. I admit it.

Season 3 kicked off last Thursday. It was an alright episode.. We got to see Elena's brother, Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) getting spooked with more of his "visions" -- something we got a glimpse of during Season 2's finale. Then there was Matt (Zach Roerig) who is now stoned most of the time -- dealing with his breakup with Caroline (Candice Accola) and that weird love triangle with Tyler Lockwood (Michael Trevino). Bonnie (Kat Graham) was nowhere to be seen, and Alaric (Matthew Davis) was dealing with Jenna's death pretty badly.

But all that wasn't as interesting as to the turn of events in Stefan (Paul Wesley), Elena (Nina Dobrev) and Damon's (Ian Somerhalder) life. Oh, the drama!

Damon Salvatore (Ian Somerhalder) in Vampire Diaries - The Birthday

That, you have to see! I feel for Stefan, I really do. Klaus (Joseph Morgan) is just so.. evil. :( Just gotta wait for more details to be unraveled in the upcoming episodes.

The songs for the season premiere was awesome as usual. Chris Mollere did not disappoint! :) So obviously my main song choice for this week's Music Monday has got to be Ron Pope - A Drop In The Ocean. Perfect for the Stefan/Elena scene. Hope you enjoy my pick for this week's Music Monday!

With Contagion coming out today, I couldn't help but be reminded of Outbreak, the viral epidemic film starring Dustin Hoffman, Morgan Freeman, Rene Russo as well as the spectacular Kevin Spacey.

Directed by Wolfgang Petersen (of The Neverending Story, Air Force One, The Perfect Storm, Troy), this drama/thriller centers around a fictional Ebola-like virus called Motaba in Zaire and later in a small town in the United States. Its primary settings are government disease control centers USAMRIID and the CDC, and the fictional town of Cedar Creek, California. Outbreak shows how far the military and civilian agencies might go to contain the spread.

Check out the trailer for Outbreak (1995) below:

In July of 1967, In Motaba River Valley, Zaire, a virus with a 100% mortality rate starts infecting people. The virus becomes known as the Motaba virus, and it's so deadly that it causes severe bleeding and liquefies internal organs, killing within 3 days. The virus wipes out Motaba River Valley, and a devastatingly huge fire bomb is dropped onto Motaba River Valley in order to reduce the chances of further infection. The bomb was dropped on the orders of corrupt General Donald McClintock (Donald Sutherland), even though an army surgeon, General Bill Ford (Morgan Freeman) , was against the idea.

27 years later, in 1994, there is another outbreak in Motaba River Valley. At the United States Army Research Insitiute of Infectious Diseases (USARIID), located at Fort Detrick in Maryland, Colonel Sam Daniels (Dustin Hoffman) is doing research on the Motaba virus, and so is his ex-wife Roberta Keough (Rene Russo), who works at the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta. Together with their teams, they race around the clock to find a solution to eradicate the deadly airborne virus before it's too late.

Dustin Hoffman, Rene Russo, Cuba Gooding Jr and Kevin Spacey in Outbreak (1995)

I remember watching this movie on Laser Disc with my late dad and I enjoyed it a whole lot. So whenever I see a viral epidemic movie, I can't help but be reminded of this film. I haven't seen it in a long while so I don't know how much I'll still enjoy it. Oh you know how it is, you think a movie is so epic and awesome until you watch it 16 years later and realize, man... that's just WRONG!

But then again, if you shot a film today comprising of the same cast, which also boasts the talent of Cuba Gooding Jr., Donald Sutherland and Patrick Dempsey among others, this will be an A-list ensemble drama!

Verdict: Definitely WORTH WATCHING. With disaster films, there's so much talk about how some scenes are just not plausible or logical, but sometimes (in this case) you've just gotta go with it. With Wolfgang Petersens direction, you won't be disappointed.
The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn poster arrived earlier today, much to the delight of Twihards all over the world. There you have it. The break of dawn (how subtle *rolls eyes*) showed in the teaser poster of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn.

I told my blogging buddy Ane, that I wasn't interested in Breaking Dawn after going through 3 bad movies. However I realized that I might have been too harsh. If this poster brings delight to some of my Twihard readers, then I will do this for you guys.

This final film adaptation will see Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) and Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson) counting down the days until their wedding. It's the talk of the small town of Forks, Washington. Bella's acceptance of Edward's proposal means an Ivy League education, a step up the financial ladder and the shadow of death in his promise to make her a vampire.

The final film of the saga is directed by Bill Condon and will be split in two. The first installment sees a November 18th, 2011 release date while the release date for the second film will be on November 16th, 2012. A whole year, Twihards! A whole YEAR!

However, fans can expect to see the film's first teaser trailer during the MTV Movie Awards which will be held on 5th June 2011 (Sunday). So mark your calendars!

Till then, I leave you Twihards with these official movie stills for The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn! Enjoy!

I watched Thor TWICE. Once in 2D and once in 3D. Yes, if I was willing to pay twice for a movie, that means I enjoyed it. A LOT. But you'll get to read how much I loved it in my Thor movie review which I have yet to write. I will say though that throughout the movie, the score pretty much blew my mind. I felt it. I embraced it. I loved it.

The song I chose for this week's Music Monday played during the "bar scene" with Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and Dr. Eric Selvig (Stellan Skarsgard) and it played once again while the credits were rolling (end of movie). I loved it the first time I heard it and I immediately recognized Dave Grohl's voice and trademark sound. Here's Walk by Foo Fighters, Live on David Letterman:

Here's a fan made music video of the song which contains a bunch of clips from the film.

However, this song is not available on the Thor Original Motion Picture Soundtrack. The soundtrack is comprised of songs composed by Patrick Doyle. Check out the track list (track titles may contain spoilers of the plot -- for those who haven't watched it yet!)

Chasing the Storm

Prologue

Sons of Odin

A New King

Ride to Observatory

To Jotunheim

Laufey

Frost Giant Battle

Banishment

Crisis In Asgard

Odin Confesses

Hammer Found

Urgent Matter

The Compound

Loki’s Lie

My Bastard Son

Science and Magic

The Destroyer

Forgive Me

Thor Kills the Destroyer

Patrick Doyle (of Hamlet, Henry V, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire) is genius. He managed to capture the emotions really well through the music. I don't know about anyone else but I really felt it. I guess being a long time creative collaborator with Kenneth Branagh, director of Thor, they can see each other's visions for the theme and music really well and it showed. One of favorite tracks from the OST is Forgive Me, because I loved that scene when Thor confronted the Destroyer.

The soundtrack was released on May 3rd, 2011 so fans of original music scores, go ahead and get it, already. Well worth your pretty dollar!! :)
Seru is a Malaysian horror film co-directed by actor-director, Pierre Andre and acclaimed local independent filmmaker, Wong Ming Jin. This is the second film that Pierre Andre and Ming Jin collaborated on -- the first being the romantic film, Salon. Seru stars Pierre Andre, Nora Danish, Awal Ashaari, Cut Mutia and Azman Hassan among others.

The premise of the film is basically a horror film within a film, which seems to be the rave with horror films these days. Taking a cue from films like Paranormal Activity, Quarantine, Blair Witch and Cloverfield, Seru was characterized by handheld shooting of documentary-like style similar to the films mentioned.

Check out the Seru movie trailer below:
Writer(s): Pierre Andre, Ming Jin
Language: Malay
Genre: Horror
Running Time: 1 Hour 24 Minutes
Cast: Pierre Andre, Nora Danish, Awal Ashaari, Cut Mutia, Azman Hassan, Sharnaaz
Release Date: 28 April 2011
Synopsis:

"Seru" follows a production team in the midst of shooting when many strange things start to take place, affecting the crewmembers until eventually someone is murdered. When assistant director (Sari) gets hysterical and makeup artiste Julia collapses, things start to get haywire. Not long after, Julia disappears into the forest and the rest head out to find her. As the crewmembers get taken out one at a time by a vengeful entity, the reason behind the whole event is uncovered.

The film stars newcomers Shaarnaz Ahmad, Katija Ghani and Cut Mutia, as well as television regulars Nisha Dirr, Along Ezzendi Aziz, Qhaud Rashid, Azman Hassan, Nursharifatun Najwa, Sufian Mohamad, Dazrin Kamaruddin, Nabila Dally, Dewa Sapri and Aida Yusmanja.

“Ming Jin and I are horror fans and we enjoyed watching Quarantine, and to a lesser extent The Blair Witch Project. Seru is a lot like both movies, with some references to slasher flick The Crazies,” Pierre says.

Woo says that Seru is both scary and bloody. “It’s a slasher flick from beginning to end.”

The film was released recently, on 28th of April 2011 in all local cinemas, nationwide. So far, I haven't heard a review on the film yet.. I guess everyone was busy watching Thor. However, once I get some time off, I'll be checking this film out. I promised Nabila Dally (from the television series, Qalesya) and one of the film's supporting actress that I'll be checking this out! I'll let you know how it goes, Bhell! :)

Also, Seru will be screened at the 13th Far East Film Festival in Udine, Italy, from April 29 to May 7. Woo says it’s one of two Malaysian films screened at the festival, the other being Hantu Kak Limah Balik Rumah. It's good to know that Malaysian films are given the opportunity to gain more exposure on the global front! Kudos!

So yeah, can't wait to check this one out and support my dear friend, Bhell, as well as the local film industry!

Country Strong (2011) Movie Review

Warning: Review MAY contain spoilers.
Running time: 117 mins
Cast: Garrett Hedlund as Beau Hutton
Gwyneth Paltrow as Kelly Canter
Tim McGraw as James Canter
Leighton Meester as Chiles Stanton

Synopsis: A drama centered on a rising country-music songwriter (Hedlund) who sparks with a fallen star (Paltrow). Together, they mount his ascent and her comeback, which leads to romantic complications involving her husband/manager (McGraw) and a beauty queen-turned-singer (Meester).

Gwyneth Paltrow in Country Strong

Country Strong is one film that has been on my radar ever since I found out that Garrett Hedlund was cast for the part of a rising country-music star who's in love with an older, fallen superstar (portrayed by Gwyneth Paltrow). Seriously, who didn't want to see the Tron Legacy hottie strumming his guitar and baring his *ehem* soul to the audience, right? ;) Also on the plus side, Tobey McGuire took on the role of producer for this film.

I'm not exactly a country music fan per se, but I do enjoy country music quite a bit. This film is almost a country musical with solid "singing" performances by Garrett Hedlund, Gwyneth Paltrow and Leighton Meester. The "acting", on the other hand... well, let's just say that Hedlund carried the weight of the film more than the other lead cast. He practically stole the show.

Garrett Hedlund as Beau Hutton

He was probably the only believable character in the movie.. Oh and Mr. Mcgraw. A solid performance also by Tim McGraw who played Kelly Canter's husband and manager.

Gwyneth Paltrow was good but I don't think she was great in this film. I don't know, it just seemed that at some scenes it seemed forced and unnatural. Is it possible to over-act? She is a good actress.. heck, she's an Oscar-winning actress, but somehow, channeling Britney Spears for inspiration might not be her forte. As for

Leighton Meester as Chiles Stanton in Country Strong © 2010 - Sony Pictures, Inc.

Leighton Meester (who is mostly known for her queen bee role, Blair Waldorf, in Gossip Girl), her character as a ditzy southern beauty queen turned singer, was just okay.. it was a little flat in the beginning. She started out rough, but she does play googly eyes really well with Hedlund and their chemistry was palpable! Only towards the second to third act of the film, did I feel Meester carry her character's worth.

Country Strong: Chiles Stanton (Leighton Meester) singing Give In To Me with Beau Hutton (Garrett Hedlund)

The screenplay however, was rather choppy. It's almost like it was not written by Shana Feste who also wrote and directed The Greatest (starring Pierce Brosnan, Susan Sarandon, Carey Mulligan and Aaron Johnson). That film was just heartbreakingly beautiful. Country Strong, on the other hand was just choppy and a bit disconnected at times. You'll see what I mean when you watch the film. Genesaugey said it best by lamenting: "There didn't seem to be much continuity to the film, but just a bunch of scenes thrown together."

Verdict: WATCHABLE. Despite all that, I still managed to enjoy the film. I really did like it. The Country Strong soundtrack is pretty great. The chemistry Hedlund had with his leading ladies were believable. It doesn't take a rocket science to figure out what's gonna happen in the end of the film, so just sit back, relax, and enjoy the ride.

It's Kind of a Funny Story (2010) Movie Review

Warning: Review MAY contain spoilers.
Director: Anna Boden, Ryan Fleck
Writer(s): Anna Boden, Ryan Fleck (screenplay), Ned Vizzini (novel)
MPAA Rating: Rated PG-13 for mature thematic issues, sexual content, drug material and language.
Running time: 101 min
Cast: Keir Gilchrist as Craig
          Zach Galifianakis as Bobby
          Emma Roberts as Noelle
          Lauren Graham as Lynn
          Jim Gaffigan as George
Viola Davis as Dr. Eden Minerva
          Zoë Kravitz as Nia

Synopsis: Craig is a high-school junior, in the gifted program, infatuated with his best friend's girl. When he realizes he's suicidal, he checks himself into the psychiatric ward of a hospital, thinking they'll do an observation, help him, and send him home in time for school the next day. Once in, however, he must stay for a week. While the juvenile ward is being renovated, so he's in with adults as well as a few youths.

It's Kind of a Funny Story is an independent comedy drama film co-directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck (who also co-directed in indie films, Sugar and Half Nelson) based on the 2006 novel of the same name by Ned Vizzini. The book was inspired by Vizzini's own brief hospitalization for depression in November 2004.

In the film, 16-year old Craig Gilner is an over achieving, depressed youth that has been contemplating on committing suicide by jumping off the Brooklyn Bridge. Not pulling through with it, he cycles to the hospital and asks to be hospitalized for the night for evaluation and observation. However, things change when the doctor admits him for psychiatric evaluation for one week. Apparently, that's not what he was expecting at all. Not only does he not think himself crazy, he also doesn't want his school to find out he was committed to the psychiatric ward.

In the psych ward, he meets Bobby, a man who's struggling to be a good father to his daughter and Noelle, a girl his age who's under observation for self-mutilation. The week Craig spends there, he realized that his troubles and depression can't compare to what others are going through and that being in there, he feels fairly normal and begins to help others (at times, without realizing it) and help himself in the process.

"See, that’s the part I don’t get, Craig. I mean, you’re cool, you’re smart, you’re talented. You have a family that loves you. You know what I would do, just to be you, for just a day? I would… I would do so much. I would… I don’t know. I would just… I’d just live. Like it meant something." - Bobby

Verdict: WORTH WATCHING. Brilliantly narrated, the lead cast in the film gave solid strong performances and the film was comically and wonderfully written. The direction of the movie in whole was great considering the scenes were limited to the psych ward. The supporting characters all gave great performances -- the "crazies" in the psych ward added both humor and heart to the film. Galifianakis, gives a toned down performance, and although comical, gives the most touching performance when he struggles to overcome his depression for his daughter.

All in all, it's kind of an awesome film! Although centered around depression, the film isn't depressing in the least. It's a heartwarming tale that makes you look at your life and realize that we always think that our problems are the biggest until you come across people who have bigger problems in their life. Highly relate-able. It wasn't sappy and overdone and this is one of the better movies I've seen in a while. Two thumbs up!

For those wanting to watch it, you can check out the movie trailer for the film:
Gotta say, that all these high budget box office movies are really getting killed by indie films. Such a shame these films don't get the attention it deserves.

Why I Love Movies

Movies do a lot for a person's mojo. Well, at least it does for me.

As far back as I can remember, my parents LOVED three things: movies, food and music. You might criticize my parents' parenting skills when I state this next fact -- my parents actually let us watch movies with them and just cover our eyes and ears during those “you-can't-watch-this” parts (sex or gruesome scenes) or the “hold-your-hands-over-your-ears-and-sing” parts (indecent language/cussing). But we still grew up just fine. I don't swear. I don't smoke. I don't do drugs. In fact, I'm a pretty peachy person.

My parents let me watch Highlander (1986) with them when I was like 6-7 years old. The film was rated R.

The measure of a good movie to me is how it makes me feel while watching it. Whether they're movies that give me a good laugh, a good cry, make me feel good, movies that make me think, those that disturb me for days on end... It all boils down to the feelings it evokes in me.

My favorite movie of all time: Shawshank Redemption (1994)

It doesn't have to be Oscar nominated film. In fact, some of my favourite movies have scored top honours at the Razzies. LOL!

Indecent Proposal (starring Robert Redford, Demi Moore and Woody Harrelson) won Worst Picture at the 1993 Razzies. I actually enjoyed this movie. So sue me.

Basically, watching movies, to me, is like going to a theme park. A good movie makes me feel like going on a rollercoaster ride – not knowing what to expect, it ends sooner than I want it to and makes me yearn for more..I want to go on it over and over again.

A bad movie, on the other hand, feels like going on a tea cup ride. From the looks of it, it's fun but you end up nauseated, closing your eyes and wishing it would just stop. But even so, you still can't get enough of theme parks. You end up going home and planning for the next theme park visit.

To date, I have watched hundreds of films.. MAYBE even more than a thousand? I don't know. Maybe. The bad films don't stop me from watching another.

A good film is when the price of the dinner, the theatre admission and the babysitter were worth it. ~Alfred Hitchcock

Right now, on my next watch list is Thor. I know, right? Where have I been? It's been playing in cinemas since 28th April. Time is not a luxury I can afford right now. Oh well. Hopefully this weekend.
I have been on a super looong hiatus -- since before the awards seasons. Man, it's been that long. Reel Madhouse is MAD dusty! Oh well, that's why I'm back and it feels great! What better way to kick off my return with one of my favorite segments, Music Monday!

The song I chose this week, is a country tune from the film Country Strong.

The film is a A drama centered on a rising country-music songwriter (Garrett Hedlund) who sparks with a fallen star (Gwyneth Paltrow). Together, they mount his ascent and her comeback, which leads to romantic complications involving her husband/manager (Tim McGraw) and a beauty queen-turned-singer (Leighton Meester).

The song that I picked was a duet sung by Garrett Hedlund and Leighton Meester called Give In To Me.

I've always liked the smooth croons of country music and this one is no different. As for the film, I'll write a review on it later on but suffice it to say that I liked it.

The soundtrack for Country Strong was released back in January and is available. However, in the official soundtrack for Country Strong, another rendition for Give In To Me was recorded by Faith Hill.
