I'm very excited about Jerry's run again. I remember long long ago, my mother worked for him when he was first governor and I've heard some of the funniest stories about Jerry through my mom. I hope I can be big help for his campaign, since I live in the Bay Area. The irony is my mom (Lynne Williams) is running for governor in Maine the same year and she started her politics experience with Jerry Brown.

When Jerry Brown was Governor of California, his innovation raised many standards in CA that other states then followed. I can only admire his choice to forego the governor's mansion and drive his own Plymouth when we are watching CEOs squander fortunes while traveling in jets and staying at resorts.

I don't understand the question of Jerry Brown having been a former Governor -- since when is experience a negative? Also, Brown has not been twiddling his thumbs since then... he went on to (as his 25 things cite) work under Mother Theresa's direction, drop the crime rate in Oakland as mayor beyond even his own goal, serve as Attorney General...

Austerity and breaking from the norm is exactly what CA needs right now.

If (or should I say when) you become Governor, will you choose an old Plymouth as your car, and will you sleep on a matress on the floor? I guess we'll need to upgrade your standard of living a little. We muat consider that you're not a single person any more, and an austerity philosophy can be taken to extremes at times.

I like Blip a lot, too.

As for ease of embedding, Brightcove has a pair of buttons (not unlike YouTube) which can copy to your clipboard either the link or the embed code for whatever you are watching.

No campaign should leave out YouTube. Like so many others say, you have to go where the people are. It's like canvassing. You don't walk sparsely populated areas...you walk dense ones. YouTube is the Manhattan of online video density.

I was actually quite befuddled by the Clinton "Sopranos" video this morning, because it took so damn long to see it on YouTube, where it could have been flourishing all day.

The biggest problem I see in the off the shelf distribution channels is the inability to put your own post-roll click-through links. Having that capability could better use the video as the hook, and offer a course of action to pursue at the end.

Because - as great as the Sopranos video is - these pieces are not about cinema...they're about organizing action to win an election.

I haven't figured them all out, but two of them were directed at videos that were collected on the CommunityCounts page -- Jaimie in CA is user "razela," and Anastasia in Chicago is "bluefirewitch." Unfortunately, the top-rated vids on CC.us were not among the responses. Ah well.

I've been a big advocate of Blip.tv over YouTube in my circles because of the improved quality, choice of formats, podcast enclosure support, and Creative Commons licensing. However, my YT-prone cohorts come back at me with the extreme ease of copying the embed code from a YT video you find in someone else's blog (either copy it directly from the new & improved YT player or click the player to get to the root YT page), whereas there's almost no way for a viewer of a Blip video on a blog to find the originating page from which to copy their own embed. As far as virality goes (crucial to a campaign), YT wins there; Blip needs to catch up (they say they're improving their player to be more like YT's). How is Brightcove on that?

Another service that could be handy for campaigns is something like Crowdabout.us, which allows for time-associated tags/comments to be attached to a video, giving us bookmarks to click to a particular issue that matters to us rather than wading through 20 minutes of stump speech. Any other bookmarking services for videos?

[...] ReelPolitic notices that the Edwards campaign has taken down the video I wrote about the other day showing the candidate asking his wife permission to go to a basketball game under the proudly snarky headline, ‘Will he ask for permission to invade Iran?‘ Click on the video now and it’s “private.” Ah, but there is no private in a presidential campaign. ReelPolitic asks: “Did Jarvis’ snark drive this video into privacy?” Well, if so, that’d be silly. The Edwards video was the first spark I saw of a candidate being just a little loose on the little camera. If someone in the campaign tries to sanitize, script, and spin that, they’re missing the point of the medium. Put the video back up. What’s the harm in looking human? [...]

"Politubers" and "politubing", freshly coined terms by web video analytics company TubeMogul.com and Andrew Sullivan of Atlantic Monthly to basically mean using online videos for political campaigns, promises to really have an interesting impact in the Presidential 08 campaign. With such relatively inexpensive, unchartered, and far reaching potential, it will be the Web-savvy campaigns that will take full advantage of this exciting but dizzying medium. This presidential race like no other in history is sure to blaze new grounds in this arena. Sure it's been around, but never at this level. Politubing is no doubt being brought into the main stream and we can probably safely predict that by the next presidential campaign, politubing will be a polished work of art. Never having being actually politically involved myself, this notion of "politubing" somehow spoke to me and I even started my own rookie "politubing" blog. Somehow this does feel like it's a more reachable medium to us commoners than anything ever presented before. Thanks for the videos.
