What's a Zine?

Zines, stemming from "fanzines" of the early 1960s, have spanned generations in the underground literature, art, and music scenes in various areas of the world. Essentially a handmade magazine, discover the history and future of these publications and learn how to create one yourself with some basic supplies on Monday, April 7th at 7 pm in the Community Room . Come with an idea you'd like to write about - music, travels, recipes,relationships, social issues - anything works! We'll provide the supplies and you can have participate in zine culture. Sign me up!

Bestselling Author Douglas Preston to Speak at Library Lecture Series Friday, April 25th

Bestselling author Douglas Preston is the first speaker in the 2014 Matthew F. Flynn Library Lecture Series. His book Tyrannosaur Canyon is the 2014 selection of On the Same Page in Lackawanna County.

Mr. Preston will be speaking at the Theater at Lackawanna College on Friday, April 25th at 7 PM. Tickets will be available at all libraries in the Lackawanna County Library System in April. Tickets are free with your library card.

Free copies of the novel and book discussions at the libraries are available for those who sign up for the program, which runs from April 1 to May 15.

The Tyrannosaur Canyon book discussion at Albright Memorial Library will be on Tuesday, May 6th at 6 PM in the Director's Office.

The Scranton Public Library is pleased to announce its selection as a screening site for the prestigious “FILM FORWARD: ADVANCING CULTURAL DIALOGUE” film series. FILM FORWARD is an international program designed to enhance greater cultural understanding, collaboration and dialogue around the globe by engaging audiences through the exhibition of films, workshops and conversations. An initiative of the Sundance Institute and the President’s Committee on the Arts and Humanities - in partnership with the National Endowment for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Institute of Museum and Library Services, FILM FORWARD promotes cultural dialogue through independent documentary and narrative film, using film’s unique ability to tell stories that explore universal themes to ignite meaningful conversations.

All screenings will be held in the library’s Community Room, located in the basement of the Lackawanna County Children’s Library at 520 Vine Street, Scranton. There is no charge and the public is encouraged to attend.

Renowned ballroom dancer, Pierre Dulaine, takes his belief that dance can overcome political and cultural differences and applies it to 11 year old Jewish and Palestinian Israelis. What occurs is magical and transformative.

Notes in the Margin

Have you seen this book at the library? It's called S. by Doug Dorst and J. J. Abrams. It's a story told through the notes in the margins and additional pieces found in the book. There are postcards, fake letters, printouts, napkins and other random items. It's a fun idea of expanding the story for the reader and it got a lot of the staff talking. Do you write notes in the margins of your books? Do you highlight or underline passages to share later? What would it be like to share a book by writing notes back and forth?

We're sad to report that our Bookmobile will be off the road due to repairs. You will see it in this weekend's St. Patrick's Day Parade in Scranton, but it is unable to make it's regular stops. If you have any questions please contact us at 570-348-3000 ext. 3000.

Just remember, that you can return any of the items you checked out on the Bookmobile to any of our other locations through out Lackawanna County.
