Learning the Lingo: Swing Trading

(Swing Trading)

Swing Trading is a style of trading that attempts to capture gains in a stock within one to four days. Swing traders use technical analysis to look for stocks with short-term price momentum. These traders aren’t interested in the fundamental or intrinsic value of stocks, but rather in their price trends and patterns.

To find situations in which a stock has the extraordinary potential to move in such a short time frame, the trader must act quickly. Therefore, swing trading is mainly used by at-home and day traders. Large institutions trade in sizes too big to move in and out of stocks quickly. The individual trader is able to exploit such short-term stock movements without having to compete with the major traders.

(When Does The 128 GB Vertex 4 Slow Down?)》 這個主題 (原文出自《OCZ Vertex 4 128 GB：測試 1.4 版韌體的寫入效能 (OCZ Vertex 4 128 GB: Testing Write Performance With Firmware 1.4)》這篇文章)。

What is a CFD?

A CFD or "Contract For Difference" is a derivative that allows traders to take advantage of prices moving up (long positions) or prices moving down (short positions) on underlying financial instruments and are often used to speculate on those markets.

They are not permitted in the United States, where the US government insists that the investors trade the actual underlying securities, which are typically futures. However, these instruments are very popular outside of the US, where investors can trade gold, oil, or stock index futures.

What Is RSI?

The RSI or Relative Strength Index is a momentum oscillator that measures the speed and change of price movements.

RSI oscillates between 0 and 100.

Traditionally RSI is considered overbought when above 70 and oversold when below 30.

Signals can also be generated by looking for divergences, failure swings and centerline crossovers.

RSI can also be used to identify the general trend.

Why is gold considered a "safe-haven"?

Gold is considered a safe-haven asset as throughout history it has been viewed as a store of value. It is essentially a currency that cannot be manipulated by the interest rate policies of any one government, and has traditionally been used as a hedge against inflation.

As the US dollar continues to decline, money moves to gold in order to take advantage of the potential inflation that may occur as a result.

What Is Volatility?

Volatility is a measure for variation of price of a financial instrument over time. Historic volatility is derived from time series of past market prices.

Put simply, volatility refers to the amount of uncertainty or risk about the size of changes in a security's value. A higher volatility means that a security's value can potentially be spread out over a larger range of values. This means that the price of the security can change dramatically over a short time period in either direction. A lower volatility means that a security's value does not fluctuate dramatically, but changes in value at a steady pace over a period of time.

How Do Interest Rates Affect Currencies?

Interest rates are one of the most important fundamental factors that influence the value of a currency. The higher the interest rate, the more desirable the currency. For example, the interest rate in Australia is currently paying 4.75%, and the rate in the US is 0.25%. Where would you prefer to keep your money, all other things being equal?

This gives way to the carry trade, and is also one of the reasons why forex trading is so popular!

What is a Stop-Loss Order?

A stop-loss order is an order that is intended to take you out of a trade when price moves opposite to the expectation. While usually intended to limit losses, stops can also be used to protect profitable positions as well. A sell stop protects a long position and is placed below the current market price, and a buy stop protects short positions and is placed above the current market price.

How does CPI data affect a currency?

Generally speaking, CPI data measures inflation in an economy. When inflation gets too high in a country, the Central bank may increase interest rates in order to ensure price stability. This may cause the currency to rise in value as the additional interest received makes the currency more desirable.

What is a "Bond Vigilante"?

A bond vigilante is a bond market investor who protests monetary or fiscal policies they consider inflationary or risky by selling bonds, thus increasing yields.

In the bond market, prices move inversely to yields. When investors perceive that risk is rising they demand higher yields to compensate for the added risk. As a result, bond prices fall and yields rise, which increases the net cost of borrowing. The term references the ability of the bond market to serve as a restraint on the government's ability to over-spend and over-borrow.

When is the forex market open for trading?

It is a common misconception that the forex market is open for trading "24/7", when in fact it is more like "24/5". The market closes for the weekend at 5pm EST on every Friday of the week, and re-opens for trading on Sunday at 5pm EST.

The forex market is commonly referred to as the market that "follows the sun"!

What is Risk-Aversion?

Risk aversion is a market theme that occurs when investors are not confident about the economic climate and will give up potential higher yielding assets for the safe-haven of lower-yielding assets. Stocks, oil, and the commodity currencies are considered "risk assets" and US Treasuries, the US dollar, and Swiss franc are considered safe haven assets.

What is a "Dead-Cat Bounce"?

A Dead-cat bounce is a Wall Street term that refers to a small, brief recovery in the price of a declining asset such as a stock, bond, or currency pair.

Taking it one day at a time.

會用 "out of my league" 這種說法，可能和國外運動盛行有關。以棒球為例，就有分大小聯盟，其中小聯盟還可以繼續細分為 3A (AAA)、2A (AA)、高階 1A (Advanced A)、1A (A)、短期 1A (Short A)、新人聯盟 (Rookie) 六種。

正好 ForexNews.com 的「Question and Answer of the Day (今日問答)」專欄，每天都有不同的主題 (金融詞彙) 和說明 (名詞解釋)，希望對各位有幫助。

(Currency Intervention)

What is a currency intervention?

A currency intervention occurs when a Central Banks takes actions to influence the value of their currency, typically to weaken it. They can do this through open market activity by selling their own currency and buying that of others.

What is a safe-haven currency?

A safe-haven currency is one that is perceived by the markets to be a store of value. In times of extreme risk aversion, currencies like the Swiss franc, the US dollar, and the Japanese yen are favored. When the markets are confident and in risk taking mode, these currencies are sold as carry traders seek yield.
