I read a lot of romance novels – you might call it market research, but really, it boils down to the fact that I’m a sucker for a happy ending. While there are plenty of other genres from mystery to non-fiction in my reading list for any given month, nothing beats a good romance novel for tugging the heart strings as the characters journey toward their happily ever after.

Books earn a place on my keeper shelf (or virtual keeper shelf) when authors dig deep into the emotional motivation for their female heroines. It’s wonderful when those emotions unlock something inside me, some sorrow or joy that needs an outlet in a few moments of tears or laughter spilled safely for a fictional character.

What matters to each heroine and how the author makes her memorable usually comes down to something in the backstory that has a lingering effect on how a female heroine perceives herself as worthy or deserving of romance and love.

Isn’t that always the way – even in our real lives?

The romance and ramp up of falling in love is a delicious sensation, a delightful time in a relationship. Yet it’s as much our insecurities as the things we’re confident about in those early days that gives us those happy flutters. There’s an eagerness in new love that celebrates everything from a silly look to the simple joy of holding hands.

And when we find our personal hero and create our own happy ever after, that eagerness eventually settles into something deeper and more lasting. Those butterflies smooth out as time and experience builds trust. Devotion and commitment combine with the hard work every relationship requires, until something miraculous and beautiful happens…

You circle back to that sweet rush of falling in love with each other all over again.

Only this time (and every time after) it’s better because the trust is there. It’s sweeter for the strength only dedication between two real-life, happy-ever-after people can provide.

As an Army wife, the days that part me from my husband challenge and change us both. We grow as indivuals as we cope with obstacles and celebrate milestones, but with the benefit of a solid touchstone of love that distance cannot diminish. When we see each other again, we share where we’ve been and what we’ve seen with the confidence of knowing we’ll be going forward together.

Starting with that giddy rush and sweet romantic joy amid all the other emotions of being reunited.

The rich variety of emotions are what keep me engaged with a romance novel and those emotions are what I try to infuse in the romance novels I write as well.

Live the adventure!

~ Enjoy this excerpt from Beguiled ~

When the rain got me, I was still running along an unfamiliar street that seemed endless on both directions. Within seconds, the drizzle became a cold downpour that soaked me to the bone, plastering the thin shirt and jeans onto my body. My hair was sticking on my face, pricking my eyes like dozens of needles, but I didn’t stop. Lost in a haze of despair, I could not comprehend the faint voice in my head that warned me to go back. I kept running away. Where I was heading, I could not tell anymore. Everything around me seemed strange and obscure; no houses, no shelter, only the perennial olive trees and the murky veil of rain. For the last two years in my life, every day, every minute, every second had been spinning around one single pivot; that rescue mission had been the only pivot of my new life. It had defined my actions, my thoughts, and my whole existence. I had gone a long way, overcoming any personal limit and fear, transcending time, only because I was fixed on a purpose. I had left my old life behind.

I had a life once.

Now, my mission was my life. A mission that had taken me far away from my family, my friends, my studies and my future. But I did not care anymore. I had chosen my destiny. It had always been about him. Christopher. He had turned his back on me and the pivot support had suddenly vanished. I had nothing to lean on. My whole life was collapsing. I was collapsing. There was no angel coming to my rescue this time.

A sharp pain in my chest blocked my breath, forcing me to stop. But I welcomed the pain, didn’t want it to ease out. Strangely enough, it seemed to be the right thing to feel. This is how some people have died, right? Perhaps this could be the end…

“Hey, you’re standing in the middle of the street!” a voice in my head shouted. “And that yellow light approaching is about to crash into you in minutes. Can’t you hear it? You have to move to the side. Don’t just stand there. It’s a car! It’s definitely a car and the veil of hale certainly does not help. MOVE!”

Then why wasn’t I moving? Could I be waiting for the car to put an end to this excruciating obstacle race I had started?

I closed my eyes and held my breath as the roaring sound of the car approached.

Here’s an excerpt to tempt you:

Beyond her heavy eyelids, Kirra knew she was no longer alone. In the darkest shadows a presence had joined her.

The being didn’t breathe. Her sensitive hearing would have detected the slight whoosh of air filtering through the spongy mass of a living lung.

It also wasn’t human—her tongue would have tingled from the imminent promise of a blood offering.

Whatever the thing was, she had never encountered its kind before.

A slight shift in the air to the left alerted her to the creature’s exact position. Part of her wanted to be afraid but her stronger essence knew there was nothing to fear.

A prickling began in the tips of her toes as she pushed the comforting thought into every corner of her brain. Curious about the cause, she stilled her mind and focused on the heat spreading from her feet throughout the rest of her body. Not an entirely unpleasant sensation, it was much like bathing in a gentle wash of warm water.

Once the sensation penetrated her brain she knew all her past actions were being picked apart and judged by the invading heat. Somehow she understood that the being held her life in its hands. Despair saturated the infrastructure of her spirit but ceased almost immediately, leaving a sense of weightlessness at her soul’s core.

“Only the pure of heart can receive my protection—all others perish during the purging.”

The edict slipped into her thoughts like soft feathers turned to a thick warm liquid. Through the haze washing over her reflective process, Kirra sensed her body being lifted off the slab of stone and was unable to resist the movement.

To be cradled against an essence exuding such strength and vitality made her want to cry. All she’d been lacking in her heart flooded her system, choking the breath from her lungs.

“Weep not…”

The voice drifted off into unintelligible murmurings as the shadows behind her eyes turned pure black and Kirra’s thoughts were no more.

I hope you’re as intrigued as I am!

I’m so excited to help spread the news about RAGE! The newest installment in the Faces of Evil thriller series by USA Today Bestselling Author Debra Webb is available now. Do yourself a favor and grab your copy today. It’s available on Kindle, Nook, or pick it up in paperback online or at a retail store in your neighborhood!

Don’t wait until tomorrow. Make time to get your copy TODAY!

Why am I being so pushy? That’s simple. RAGE is one of those 5 star, page-turning, can’t-miss books. (Deb tends to write them that way).

Here’s a bit more about RAGE:

“…A rage…that nothing can allay, nothing but blood…” ~William Shakespeare

Jess Harris returned to her Alabama hometown of Birmingham and started over. As a former special agent in Quantico’s Behavioral Analysis Unit, there isn’t much in the way of evil that she hasn’t seen. Yet the blood bath she discovers in a quiet Birmingham bedroom community shocks even her. Amid the eerie echoes of the Charles Manson massacre, Jess investigates the cop’s wife who was brutally murdered while her baby lay sleeping down the hall.

As the body count rises, Jess and her team scramble to determine if the murders are gang-related, a personal vendetta…or something else even more heinous. When Jess names a suspect that sends shock waves through the entire department, she discovers that the identity of the killer may lie with an autistic child who has gone missing. Jess races against time to save the child and to stop a final, horrifying act of rage.

Granted I read a wide variety of books, and romantic suspense novels and thrillers are always in my to-be-read stack. But this series takes the romantic suspsense/thriller genre to a whole new level with memorable characters and intense cases Jess and Dan must unravel, all the while dealing with their complex, ever-evolving personal situation.

I was hooked on this series from the first pages of OBSESSION, book one in the Faces of Evil series. The twists and turns of the case and the edgy chemistry between Jess and Dan kept me turning pages when I should have been doing any number of other things. That’s always the hallmark of a great book, isn’t it?

You can start with Obsession or start in right now with RAGE – the novels are written so you can jump into the series anywhere and enjoy a nail-biting adventure sure to keep you up past your bedtime.

And yet today is as true and real as life gets. Today I am the mother of a twenty -year-old. I’m not sure how that happened, since I didn’t authorize it. Nor do I feel ‘old’ enough to say my baby girl is twenty or that my precious baby boy will turn seventeen next week. Ack!

Okay, I know growing up is part of life. Heck, most days I think of myself as a grown up. My parents probably felt these same swirling, disbelieving feelings about me at some point in the process. (fortunately blogs weren’t an option back in the Stone Age)

For the entirety of our parenting experience my husband and I have done our best to raise thoughtful, loving children who can get out there in society and take care of themselves as well as be a contributing force for good.

(When the Brilliant Daughter was twelve, we made her vow to only use her powers for good, but I don’t think we ever got the full sworn statement of the same from the Brilliant Son… that might come back to bite someone in the future).

She’s TWENTY. Twenty! When did it happen?

In a blink is my best guess.

You know, when you’re living it, those various stages of motherhood feel unending. It’s timeless. Occasionally harrowing. Beautiful sweet kisses and innocent (or devious) smiles. Gutwrenching moments when feelings are hurt and nothing but love and time can change the outcome. Long, arduous days when you ache with your little one through fevers, illness, or injury.

Motherhood for me has melded into a vast spectrum of love. A suspended sort of prism where all the happy moments are stored up high in a clear, blue sky and the tough times are settled near the other end, in a dim fogbank of memories we might not want to revisit and yet we do – if only to celebrate getting through.

My daughter is no longer just my brilliant, wildly independent baby girl. She’s a lovely young woman of outstanding character with dreams, ideas, and goals… and the entirety of her life spread out before her wildly independent self. She is an inspiration to me, the courageous heroine of her own story. A story that unfolds a little more each day.

Today, we celebrate her as a family though we are scattered across the globe. And today, I find this weird new stage of motherhood is as beautiful and as precious to me as all the other joys and challenges that came before it.

Brilliant Daughter is simply a treasure, one of the greatest gifts we have ever been blessed to receive.

Live the adventure!

p.s. Why did I choose lions? Because The Lion King was her favorite Disney movie. Of. All. Time. (when she was a toddler).

As a paranormal romance author, it shouldn’t surprise anyone that my imagination wanders down strange paths with only the least bit of prompting. The Matchmaker series was sparked by a simple, errant thought during an advertisement for an online dating site: “How would a werewolf fill out that profile?” Well, my imagination took the bait and set out to answer the question.

Living near Charleston, South Carolina, a romantic city that embraces its colorful past, only tossed fuel on that fire. Charleston is full of big history and legends, plenty of ghosts and gardens, and more than a few strange paths. In other words, it’s the perfect setting for my lighthearted romantic, paranormal tales that will leave you smiling.

Patriots as well as pirates rattled chains down in the Old Provost Dungeon. Ghosts are no rare sight at places like the Unitarian Churchyard, Southend Brewery, or the Battery Carriage House Inn. (Fair warning, they aren’t all friendly.) The restaurants, gardens, and architecture of the city are full of inspiration for me and letting my characters in this series play in Charleston is such fun.

For example, in THE MATCHMAKER’S MARK, the half-elf Lily owns a flower shop in the famous shopping district of King Street. A few blocks down from her place is a Mexican restaurant favored by Lily’s brother as well as the werewolf Grant Barclay who is our frustrated hero in THE MATCHMAKER’S CURSE.

In the Unitarian Churchyard, Amy (the new Matchmaker) discovered she had the unexpected power to assist ghosts with matters of the heart when she helped reunite a ghost so desperately in love that she died on the same day as her husband, though they were hundreds of miles apart at the time.

That encounter was just the tip of the iceberg for Amy and in THE BODYGUARD’S VOW, she is learning first hand that it takes a trusted team of experts to keep a Matchmaker safe, informed, and on task.

Join the fun with this latest novella – a lighthearted adventure as Amy navigates the murky and frequently unexpected world of magical creatures who are either out to get her or out to save her.

Additionally, Amy’s retired greyhound (a gift from her Aunt Camille) plays a bigger role in this latest novella, which made the story that much more fun to write!

Live the adventure!

“Within moments of starting to read, you will be transported back to the Arkansas of 1967 – hot, dusty, utterly rural and edgy. Poor white farmers dependent upon cheap black labor who, due to their superior numbers, are constantly suppressed, living on the wrong side of town, ghettoised and terrified. You will remember scenes from `In the Heat of the Night’ and `Easy Rider’; you will remember that, less than fifty years ago, if you were black, you could be beaten for simply being in the wrong place at the wrong time. And if you died at the hands of a white youth, justice would almost certainly be denied you.” Author Roderick Craig Low

SUMMARY

Alison Tillman has called Forrest Town, Arkansas home for the past eighteen years. Her mother’s Blue Bonnet meetings, her father toiling night and day on the family farm, and the division of life between the whites and the blacks are all Alison knows. The winter of 1967, just a few months before marrying her high school sweetheart, Alison finds the body of a black man floating in the river, and she begins to view her existence with new perspective. The oppression and hate of the south, the ugliness she once was able to avert her eyes from, now demands her attention.

When a secretive friendship with a young black man takes an unexpected romantic turn, Alison is forced to choose between her predetermined future, and the dangerous path that her heart yearns for.

“Have No Shame is a powerful testimony to love and the progressive, logical evolution of social consciousness, with an outcome that readers will find engrossing, unexpected, and ultimately eye-opening.” Midwest Book Review

Wonderful news to share! The cover art has arrived for the novella featuring Amy’s search for the essential personnel every Matchmaker needs… a bodyguard!

a Matchmaker novella

A little about the story:

Amy Campbell is the new Matchmaker, with the magical power to identify soulmates and smooth the path for arranged marriages between elves, werewolves, or any of the myriad creatures of myth. As Amy quickly learns the position isn’t all roses and happy endings, she understands the need for a bodyguard to help her navigate the pitfalls and dangers.

Mac did a favor for one Matchmaker not knowing it would tie him indefinitely to the new Matchmaker. Frustrated by Amy’s inexperience with her new power, he wants only to send her on her way, but an ancient vow is revealed that could make that impossible.

And now for a special excerpt from The Bodyguard’s Vow:

Chapter One

Shapeshifters are notorious tricksters. Obviously they can be deceptive in form, but beyond that, they are often cunning and particular and tend to twist a phrase to their advantage whenever possible. A Matchmaker must be on guard at all times when working with a shapeshifter and unless under duress, all meetings should be held in neutral territory. Often, the challenge is knowing precisely where neutral territory is…

–notes from the Matchmaker’s Book

Amy Campbell, now known in more obscure social circles as the Matchmaker, watched her… friend, she supposed was the best term, tug at the lock he’d just placed on the storage unit door. Behind it were all the furnishings and possessions she couldn’t bear to part with, and yet couldn’t carry with her from one assignment to the next.

She was effectively a nomad from this point forward.

“Satisfied?” One of his dark eyebrows dipped low over his eye, daring her not to be.

She nodded. It wasn’t worth a comment, much less an argument. They’d been in transition nearly a month and already she understood why her Aunt Camille, the previous Matchmaker, had led what had seemed like a carefree, gypsy life.

Camille had made the constant travel to negotiate ‘business’ deals and consult elite clients look glamorous, but Amy realized now it must have been an act. She was already a bit lonely and frustrated by the necessary avoidance of public places. As the Matchmaker, her magical powers sent normal humans into a sort of romantic stupor whenever she was nearby unless she applied a spell that muted her effect.

Her retired greyhound, Guinness, bumped his head under her hand so she could rub his ears.

“You’re right. I know that now.” She couldn’t even go into a grocery store without running the risk of starting an unwanted public display of affection over the lettuces.

“This is why you need a team. Your aunt had a team –”

“Yes, every Matchmaker has a team. I memorized this lecture weeks ago.”

“And yet…”

She shot him her version of his ‘hairy eyeball’. “I have the wee beastie here, as you call him,” she said, crouching to give Guinness a hug. “He seems to be an effective mute button.” It had been a pleasant surprise to discover her greyhound was almost as good as the muting spell she had yet to master.

“Sure, and about that.”

“I’ve been studying the damn book and there’s no mention of familiars.”

“Mind your tongue,” he scolded, glancing about as if soulmate-seeking goblins might spring like ninjas from the walls.

She rolled her eyes. “Right.” She had been studying the Matchmaker’s book, soaking up every bit of knowledge about all the creatures she’d thought were merely myth and fantasy. Nothing she’d read explained why she was so different from the previous Matchmakers.

She kept quiet until they were back in his car, heading across town to the apartment building where he lived and worked. She couldn’t stay there indefinitely, but he’d used his own kind of magic to smother her affect so she had a temporary base of operation. For now. She knew he was losing patience with her, but she also knew he wouldn’t actually toss her to the street.

Not without a team in place.

“The book explains matches and gives an overview of what to expect with various ‘races’,” she added the air quotes because the habit annoyed him. “But it sure doesn’t offer up suggestions on where or how to live.”

“I keep telling you, travel light and trust your bodyguard.”

“Just as soon as I manage to hire one.”

“Aye.”

Mark your calendars, The Bodyguard’s Vow will be available April 25th!

Live the adventure!

With the release of The Matchmaker’s Curse (book 2 in the lighthearted paranormal romance Matchmaker series) several interviewers and readers have asked why I set the series in Charleston, South Carolina. The easy answer is I love the city! I love it for the history teeming with legends right up to the present friendly hospitality that abounds here. I love it for the ironwork, the artistry, the flowers, all of it.

My husband and I honeymooned in Charleston. I’ve had the pleasure of racing on a sailboat in the harbor, of walking along those cobblestone streets. Like Brendan, I might not have been raised here, but that only means I love the city all the more.

When I set out to write the Matchmaker series, the goal was to deliver a romantic tale that would leave readers smiling. I’ve told you I don’t listen to vocals when I write, but there’s an exception to every rule. In this case, Charleston by Brendan James says through his lyrics and music everything I want to convey about the beauty and magic that simply is part of the air in Charleston:

Isn’t the song fantastic? It makes me smile every time. (And that huge tree at the beginning – that’s the Angel Oak I mention in The Matchmaker’s Mark!)

If you’ve visited Charleston or read the Matchmaker books, leave me a comment and let me know if you agree about the way he captures the energy of Charleston. (I’ll choose one of the commenters to win a Matchmaker swag package!)

Be sure to visit his website here and help Brendan out with his Kickstarter for his new album - it’s only open for another couple of days: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/brendanjames/brendan-james-the-new-album Donate if you can, but definitely help spread the word about this wonderful and talented artist!

Live the adventure!

Welcome to my photo essay of adventures in decorating. Not just any decorating, but decorating for the sole purpose of making my sweet greyhound Boo comfortable in my office. Lately she paces up and down the hall and whines when I’m working in the office. Yes, I’ve tried dog beds and several blankies, but Boo’s a furniture kind of queen.

Since I have a laptop and an alphasmart, I usually spend a great deal of time writing ‘around the house’, but since the re-do the office is so nice and comfortable, that’s where I’d like to be more often. So I went on a quest for the chaise that Boo could stretch out on…

The first chaise was a bust – wouldn’t be assembled – so I had to return it…and got this instead:

We have a handy dandy parts card!

Clear instructions!

All the parts

Almost ready…

And ready for a greyhound!

Of course, Boo hasn’t yet decided she approves of this loving effort just for her. She will hang out with me, if I’m sitting on the chaise, but she hasn’t hopped up on her own, even after a serious cookie-fest to get her adapted.

Oh, well. I write romance, so I’m naturally hopeful we’ll have a happy ending and she’ll soon snuggle on the chaise while I write and edit in my office.

Live the adventure!
