Matthew Morris, 3L

Q. Where are you from?

A. Gig Harbor, Washington, which is about forty-five minutes south of Seattle and home of newly-crowned PGA tour winner Kyle Stanley.

Q. What does becoming a lawyer mean to you?
A. In all honesty, becoming a lawyer does not mean that much to me. I never take for granted the opportunity to be at Regent, but being a lawyer has never been particularly appealing. Although I have had internships at both criminal defense and civil litigation firms, the thought of practicing law is not what has motivated me over the last 2.5 years. The J.D. is such a versatile degree that I know it will serve me well no matter what field I go into.

Q. What do you wish you knew before you started law school?
A. I wish I knew I would be sitting here writing these responses just a few months before graduation. There were definitely those times 1L year when I knew it would be easier just to give up and find something new, but I am glad I didn't; I wouldn't trade these last 2.5 years for anything.

Q. What surprised you most about Regent?
A. The accessibility of professors is the most surprising aspect of Regent–in a good way. I never expected that so many professors would open their doors to students for several hours each week to ask questions or discuss what's going on in a class. Friends I talk to at other law schools tell me they never see most of their professors outside of the classroom, which I think is a shame. My experience here at Regent would not have been nearly as memorable or enjoyable if the professors were closed off from the student body.

Q. How is law school different from your college experience?
A. It is obviously much more difficult and time-consuming, but it's learning material relevant to what I want to do in life that makes law school different. Looking back, I pretty much coasted through undergrad since I knew graduate school would be in my future, which is something I can't afford to do now.

Q. What is your favorite class so far and why?
A. Sports Law with Professor Joe Kohm, hands down. It is the only class where the material was targeted directly at what I want to do for the rest of my life. The textbook provided a good foundation for the course, but it was the flexibility of the professor to talk about what was happening in the news (at the time it was the new NFL collective bargaining agreement) that made it interesting.

Q. What kind of law do you hope to practice after graduation?

A. I plan on working in sports after graduation, not necessarily in a legal profession. It will be a long, arduous journey, but Regent has given me the tools I need to succeed. Now it is just up to me to work my tail off to make it happen.

Q. How would you describe the group of your closest friends found here at Regent?
A. The people I hang out with the most are able to balance having fun and getting work done. I can't imagine getting through law school without them and their lightheartedness. Life is too short to take anything too seriously, which is something they constantly have reminded me of. I just wish one of them would step up and challenge me during our weekly games of Jeopardy. Winning is only fun when it is at least a little difficult!

Q. How do you prefer to study?
A. I do almost all of my studying in the library. I can't have any distractions around me when I am trying to get work done, so going to a local coffee shop is out of the question. I do best when I sit down for hours at a time and just plow through what I need to do instead of studying in short intervals.

Q. What is your favorite book of all time and why?
A. The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald and there's no close second. Although it ends in a tragic way, the book is focused around the idea that money and nice things can't buy happiness. All Gatsby has is his wealth, but it still isn't enough to get him the woman of his dreams, or acceptance into the upper echelon of society. Fitzgerald's own experiences were clearly prevalent in the book and I think he knew it was too late for him to find true happiness, but he wanted to save future generations from making the same mistakes.

Q. What is your favorite Bible verse:
A. John 14:6, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me." I think it is especially relevant today as we have so many distractions to keep us from Him. I don't believe that it is merely enough for me to pray to God and ask him to accept me; I must also take a Christ-like approach in my personal and professional life.

Q. If you could meet with anyone alive or dead, who would it be and why?
A. I feel like I should say David, Moses, Noah, or Jesus, but I would just be kidding myself. I want to meet Tony Romo and I'm not ashamed to say it! Not only does he play QB for America's team, but he is a scratch golfer and never seems to take himself too seriously.

Honorable Mentions: Peter (the disciple) and Thomas Edison.

Q. If you could have lunch with any faculty member or administrator at Regent who would it be and why?
A. Professor Joe Kohm. Not only did he play Division 1 basketball at Syracuse (I could ask him questions about what playing for a legendary coach was like for days on end), but he has one of the coolest jobs in the world. There aren't many Major League Baseball player agents on the planet. Having one as a adjunct professor was a great experience that I will not soon forget.

Q. If you had an entire weekend available, what would you do in the Hampton Roads area?
A. My weekend would start by taking in either a Norfolk Tides or Admirals game on Friday night. There obviously has to be some sporting event in my weekend for it to be great! Saturday would be a beach day. I'd typically head down to 56th street, away from the tourists and their large umbrellas. I will never understand why someone would go the beach to catch some sun only to sit in the shade for hours on end. The beach would be followed by a country concert at the Amphitheater, preferably Eric Church or Jason Aldean. There aren't too many country fans back in Seattle, so I try to go to as many shows as possible while I still have the chance. Lastly, I would head to Greenbrier Church on Sunday morning to worship with some of the best people I know. If you haven't heard of this church or attended it before, I invite you to come. You won't be disappointed!

Q. Is there anything else you would like your peers or future law students to learn about you?
A. My favorite quote is, "Successful people do the things unsuccessful people are not willing to do." I will never shy away from getting my hands dirty and doing the work that some may scoff at.

After reading my responses, I hope none of you think that I don't truly love the Lord and have a desire to fulfill His plans for my life. I know I didn't give 'form answers' to most of the questions, but that's just who I am. I don't do things the conventional way or take the easy way out, but I know that will make all the difference.

Elisa Himes, 2L

Q. Where are you from?

A. I am from Mendon, Michigan, a very tiny country town in the southwest region of Michigan.

Q. What does becoming a lawyer mean to you?
A. It means having the opportunity and the honor to help people. I have
always had a strong desire to impact others' lives for the better and I
am really excited to see what opportunities in law lie ahead of me.

Q. What do you wish you knew before you started law school?

A. I wish I would have known how hard it was going to be, especially
1L year. But then again, if I had known, I probably would have chickened
out—so better to have gone in blissfully ignorant.

Q. What surprised you most about Regent?
A. Honestly, how Christ-like it was. I have attended other 'Christian'
universities in undergrad, but I never really felt like they represented
what being a Christian was really about. They were more Christian in
name only: not here. I love that I have people that I can talk about my
faith with and people that are there to pray for me and encourage me. I
have never felt such a sense of community as I feel at Regent.

Q. How is law school different from your college experience?

A. Well, memorizing is what got me through all undergrad and I did well. In
law school, however, that doesn't cut it. I feel that law school, in contrast to undergrad, teaches you how to think and not just
assimilate information.

Q. What is your favorite class so far and why?
A. My favorite class so far was negotiations. I loved that class
because of the practical and hands on experience it provided. The class
was small and instead of just reading and talking theory we actually got
to negotiate and I discovered I really enjoy it.

Q. What kind of law do you hope to practice after graduation?
A. I am still up in the air on that. I am interested in immigration,
criminal law, international/human rights, civil litigation. Still don't
know yet. Just waiting on the Lord to see what doors open up.

Q. How would you describe the group of your closest friends found here at Regent?
A. I have a great group of friends here! I love them all! How would I
describe them? It is funny because we are all very different, come from
different backgrounds, and have somewhat differing beliefs, but we all
love to hang out and just have fun. So I guess I would describe them as a
group of super awesome, fun loving, law pals.

Q. How do you prefer to study?
A.
I prefer to study by myself for the most part. I usually study at home.
I can only study for short periods of time then I have to take a short
break. I do get together with study groups, but only when I have pretty
much figured out all the material myself and just want some input into
some confusing concepts.

Q. What is your favorite book of all time and why?
A.
I don't really have a favorite book. I really like Jane Austen's work
and I also read a book about human trafficking called Not For Sale
that was very eye-opening into the international and domestic human
trafficking industry.

Q. What is your favorite Bible verse?
A. Philippians
4:13, "For I can do everything through Christ, who gives me
strength..." I used this one a lot first year of law school. I also like
Proverbs 3:6 that says "All things work together for good for those who
love the Lord and have been called according to his purpose." This verse
encourages me because it is God's promise to me that if I seek Him and
follow his plan for my life, even when things look bleak, He will always
work it out for good.

Q. If you could meet with anyone alive or dead, who would it be and why?
A.
I know it sounds cheesy, but I would love to sit down face to face with
Jesus. I just have so many questions for him, although if he hasn't
revealed the answers to me as of yet, maybe I am just not supposed to
know everything. I would also like to meet Solomon from the Bible, he
was the wisest man who ever lived or who ever will live and it would be
so fascinating to sit down and have a conversation with that man.

Q. If you could have lunch with any faculty member or administrator at Regent who would it be and why?
A. Well I work at Law Career and Alumni Services so I will say Darius Davenport, Kathy Stull, and Tina Owens. They are the best!

Q. If you had an entire weekend available, what would you do in the Hampton Roads area?
A. I would probably just spend it with friends and my husband. I love the outdoors so maybe I'd go hiking or something.

Q. Is there anything else you would like your peers or future law students to learn about you?
A. I have some of the most fascinating stories from my life on the farm that you will ever hear, just ask me some time.

Eric Lansing, 2L

Q. Where are you from?
A. Dinwiddie, Virginia (where “horse,” “house,” and “hose” are all pronounced the same way).

Q. What’s the nearest city to Dinwiddie, Virginia?
A. Richmond, Virginia (where I was born) is about an hour away from Dinwiddie.

Q. What does becoming a lawyer mean to you?
A. Becoming a lawyer, to me, means being a servant of others, especially those who can’t stick up for themselves. I felt the calling to be a lawyer when I was eight years old when I heard from my parents about abortion and the crisis the courts had introduced through Roe v. Wade. I decided then that I wanted to fight for justice in that system.

Q. What do you wish you knew before you started law school?
A. I wish that I knew that Regent was harder than I ever expected. I went to a college that was a very intense (sort of a law school preparatory school). It was designed so that when people came out they would already feel prepared for law school. So I went in thinking that law school would not phase me much—and it did.

Q. What surprised you most about Regent?
A. I was very pleasantly surprised by its diversity. When I arrived, I was afraid that I would find a sheltered, culturally homogeneous campus. That isn’t what I found at all. Regent is an American school with Christian values; but it is also open to many different perspectives, and it is a home to many different cultures.

Q. How would you describe the group of your closest friends found here at Regent?
A. Very hard working, determined people.

Q. How is law school different from your college experience?
A. It is harder.

Q. What is your favorite class so far and why?
A. Constitutional Law is my favorite course because it is the heart and the soul of the entire law; and I am the kind of person who always needs to have a cause.

Q. What kind of law do you hope to practice after graduation?
A. Constitutional Law. I’m looking primarily into public interest groups.

Q. How do you prefer to study?
A. I prefer to study in my room, locked up, where nobody can disturb me—for a very long time.

Q. What is your favorite book of all time and why?
A. Desiring God by John Piper has influenced me more than any other book I have ever read, other than the Bible. The premise of Desiring God is that, “God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in him.” The result is that we follow God not out of a legalistic sense of heartless obligation, but because it provides the truest sense of real joy. We worship what we find true joy in; and our joy should be found in God. (I actually have a personal policy about Desiring God. If I ever meet anybody who wants to read it, who hasn’t read it, and for whom the cost is a barrier, then I will buy them the book or loan them a copy.)

Q. What is your favorite Bible verse? In what way does it speak to you or inspire you?
A. The answer to that question changes about every week. This week the answer is Psalm 16. Psalm 16 ends by saying to God, “At your right hand are pleasures forevermore.” That has really meant a lot to me over the past week. Just to be contemplating that the reward of following God is an eternal one and a very serious one.

Q. If you could meet with anyone alive or dead, who would it be and why?
A. The Apostle John fascinates me. He is known as the “apostle of love.” In his old age, he would have to be carried into church by young men, and he would be placed at the center of the church where people could hear him, because his voice was so feeble. His sermon was pretty simple: “Little children, love one another. Little children, love one another.” He would say that over and over again. He was emphasizing the essentials. We get off on so many abstract questions that just aren’t important. To him what was important was loving Jesus with all your heart and loving other people. That gives me a huge sense of admiration for him.

Q. If you could have lunch with any faculty member or administrator at Regent who would it be and why?
A. Dean Cook, because he is really awesome. He is confident in a very humble kind of way. He knows who he is in Christ. He doesn’t really worry a lot about what other people think about him, but he loves the people around him and wants to serve them.

Q. If you had an entire weekend available, what would you do in the Hampton Roads area?
A. Kayaking. I’ve never done that in Hampton Roads, and I’ve heard there are some great places to do it.

Q. Is there anything else you would like your peers or future law students to learn about you?
A. I want them to learn about the Gospel and I want them to know what the Gospel truly is: that Jesus Christ loves us so much that He took the penalty for sin on our behalf. We have free access to God—a God who is more anxious to hear us than we are to speak to Him.

WANT TO WIN A FREE REGENT LAW T-SHIRT?

Early this morning as I walked towards Robertson Hall, I saw a few squirrels running around. All of a sudden, they climbed the tree and perched themselves as seen here, like twin statues. I had to stop and take their picture. Your chances of seeing squirrels on campus are pretty high considering the amount of trees and grass around. I figured, what are the changes of seeing two situated so symmetrically? In any case, it made me smile. Squirrels have time to run around and exercise. They also take time to sit down and eat breakfast. Maybe there is something we as students can learn from the little ones that share this campus with us.
A. Haha. Becoming a lawyer means a lot less to me than continually BEING a
servant. Law students, generally speaking, are very driven people. For
me, as odd as this may sound, is a means to a very beautiful end. God
placed an immense passion for the orphans, the broken youth, and the
trafficked children/people of the world. I came to law school because I
know that knowing the law would help add volume to my voice. Becoming a
lawyer just means I have an added instrument I can use to make noise for
the voiceless.
*See Proverbs 31:8-9 and Psalm 10:17-18*

Q. What do you wish you knew before you started law school?

A. Very simply put, I wish I had reflected more on the fact that NO ONE I
am EVER fighting for will EVER ask my law school GPA. It's important to
do your very best with what you're given, but never compare yourself to
someone else...law school lends itself to a comparison with the person
next to you, or down the hall. Now I know for certain that I'd rather
know the person than make a ridiculously arbitrary comparison to them.
People are eternal, grades are not.

Q. What surprised you most about Regent?
A. Honestly, I wasn't entirely surprised, but I will say that I am
bountifully blessed, and permanently altered as a result of living life,
and learning law, at Regent. I came across the country with physical
limits, and I found myself in a loving family, and a fiercely tight
community. I wouldn't want to have my name on a degree from any other
school in the world.

Q. How is law school different from your college experience?

A. In some ways it's not entirely different. I had some very rigorous
professors, and they instilled a very intentional mindset with regard to
studying, as well as living, in their students. My undergraduate
experience was EXCELLENT preparation for law school, however, that being
said, law school isn't like anything else, and almost defies
explanation. The camaraderie is amazing because everybody is in the same
boat, and we all encourage each other to swim.

Q. What is your favorite class so far and why?

A. Seriously? How did I know I was going to have to answer this? Well, much
to the chagrin of most 1L's, I liked Property very much, and as far as
upper levels, I enjoyed Family Law. My enjoyment of Property stemmed
from the fact that I always felt like I was being told a story, and it
was a story I could understand. I had an excellent professor (Hernandez)
and just loved it. Family Law is where my heart is, so I just really
enjoyed being there, and I love Professor Kohm.

Q. What kind of law do you hope to practice after graduation?
A. Family Law. Focusing on orphans, adoption, juveniles, and being a voice to end human trafficking.

Q. How would you describe the group of your closest friends found here at Regent?
A. Intention is everything. I'm VERY much an introvert despite my great
love for people, so I have a small group of friends that I very greatly
love, and usually, my one-on-one time is spent with one of them, the
rest of my comrades I just see in the hallway. I also have seven 1L
girls that God placed in my life and a few undergrads too. If I'm not by
myself, or studying (most of the time) I'm with one of those people.

Q. How do you prefer to study?
A.
In order to study well, I have to have a block of uninterrupted time
where I don't have to stop. That varies greatly depending on what day it
is, or what I have to schedule with regard to meeting with various
members of 'Alphabet Soup' or a friend, but once I'm studying, I try not
to stop much until I'm finished. I usually study on my couch, or carrel
#67 in the Regent Law Library.

Q. What is your favorite book of all time and why?
A. WHAT?! This question is unfair! :) My favorite book of ALL TIME would
probably have to be the biblical book of Esther, or the Biblical book of
Ruth, it's a tossup. Esther because she was an orphan that God honored,
turned into a queen, and used mightily, and Ruth because she
represented selfless love, and is still representing today.

Q. What is your favorite bible verse? In what way does it speak to you or inspire you?
A. I love any verse that urges people to be a voice for the voiceless. My
specific verse for law school, though, is John 15:5. “I am the vine; you
are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that
bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.”

Q. If you could meet with anyone alive or dead, who would it be and why?
A. Amy Carmichael, because in her lifetime, she accomplished the things I
want to see happen in mine. We share two very real loves: Jesus and the
orphan.

Q. If you could have lunch with any faculty member or administrator at Regent who would it be and why?
A. I'd like to have lunch with Dr. Robertson. I've met him a couple times,
but I guess I'd like to tell him thanks for plowing ahead and starting
this place for the glory of God. It's changed my life and I appreciate
it. If we're talking faculty, I always like spending time with Professor
Kohm.

Q. If you had an entire weekend available, what would you do in the Hampton Roads area?
A. I'd go to lunch and the movies with Alphabet Soup, have tea with my
dearest friends, cook dinner with the undergrads, fly a kite, let one of
my girls teach me to kick a soccer ball, and run really fast while
holding on to a couple hands because it's more fun that way.

Q. Is there anything else you would like your peers or future law students to learn about you?
A. No, but I would say, if you have reservations about law school, don't be
afraid. God brought me here, and I drive on a scooter called the 'Hot
Tamale.' I get along just fine, even though my life is different, I love
it, and Regent is a wonderful place to gain community and family, no
matter your background.

Philip Germann, 1L

Q. Where are you from?

A.
Ohio. For the past thee years my wife and I lived in Toledo, Ohio while
she was attending school, but I grew up in a small town called Ohio
City.

Q. What does becoming a lawyer mean to you?
A. To me, becoming a lawyer means learning the law and being able to work in the law in a way that shows God.

Q. What do you wish you knew before you started law school?

A. I wish I knew how each of the Supreme Court Justices tended to vote and generally what their platforms are.

Q. What surprised you most about Regent?
A.
The support of the 2Ls and 3Ls. They are, for the most part, very
willing to help with any questions you may have and are uplifting and
supportive.

Q. How is law school different from your college experience?

A.
I study much more than I did in undergrad and do not have as much time
to hang out and relax. Also, I got married after undergrad, so balancing
time between my studies and my wife is a new obstacle, but one that I
gladly take on.

Q. What is your favorite class so far and why?

A.
Contracts because I feel like that it is most related to the field of
law I would like to join. I also enjoy the professor and his teaching
style.

Q. What kind of law do you hope to practice after graduation?
A. Business/Corporate Law

Q. How would you describe the group of your closest friends found here at Regent?
A. A little crazy, fun, and uplifting.

Q. How do you prefer to study?
A.
I prefer to study in the library. I get there in the morning and work
till my classes. Then I start back up after my classes and stay usually
until my homework is done, or until I get hungry.

Q. What is your favorite book of all time and why?
A.
Right now it would probably have to be To Kill a Mockingbird because I
like the message of standing up for what is right even though it may be
against the crowd.

Q. What is your favorite bible verse? In what way does it speak to you or inspire you?
A.
Philippians 4:13. It is nice to know that even through my weaknesses
God gives me the strength to make it through situations that I may think
are impossible.

Q. If you could meet with anyone alive or dead, who would it be and why?
A.
I would probably like to meet with David. He was a man after God’s own
heart and to hear how he thought ask about his relationship with God
would be pretty fascinating.

Q. If you could have lunch with any faculty member or administrator at Regent who would it be and why?
A.
Out of the limited faculty members I know of, I would probably want to
have lunch with Professor Duane just to hear his story.

Q. If you had an entire weekend available, what would you do in the Hampton Roads area?
A.
If it was warm out, I would spend it at the beach. If it wasn’t warm
enough to go to the beach, I might see if there were any games or shows
in town.

Twilight view of Regent Library taken on 1/11/12.

Leaving late from class last Wednesday. I was exhausted from work and class. It was cold and drizzly outside. The trees were bare and I asked God to show me something positive in my situation. How might he make the impending darkness and wintery weather more optimistic for me as I continued on with my day? (Yes, I did ask Him this very question as I lugged my bags to the car and my shoes dampened in the puddles.)

There was little change at first. The asphalt seemed to be the same. The line of cars building up didn't change my impression either. My shoes were getting even wetter and now my jeans too. I loaded up my books in the trunk of my car as it began to pour. For some reason, I turned around instead of quickly rushing to my driver side door. I stopped, probably looking like a nut, as I stared at the amazing beauty revealed to me in such an unexpected way.

The backdrop as pictured above is of the library seen from the student parking lot that caused me to stare. I see this building every day I come to Regent and even when I leave for the day. In probably over a hundred times of me seeing it, the library had never appeared so warm and playful. The lights from the windows were dancing, an open invitation to enter. I especially enjoyed the reflections off of the ground. The whole vista actually tricked me into thinking I was on a rue in Paris.

Maybe this is why Claude Monet painted so many images of the Rouen Cathedral. An everyday building may appear to look the same at a glance on a daily basis to the average Joe who has his other things on the mind. However, upon closer inspection, the same building from day-in and day-out can look like a completely different place in just the right time of day, lighting conditions, and weather.

My eyes are now peeled (rain or shine). I'm readying my mind and eyes for more artistic revelations of everyday places seen on campus! I asked God to share something positive with me and moments later he undoubtedly did. How unexpected! How joyous! How wonderful!

Jennifer Brown, 1L

Q. Where are you from?

A. I was born in Miami and was raised there until I turned 10, when my mother moved us to Virginia. I lived in Harrisonburg, Virginia for 19 years before moving back to Miami the day after Katrina touched down. I thought that I would spend the rest of my life in Miami, now here I am back in Virginia.

Q. What does becoming a lawyer mean to you?
A. First, it means finally fulfilling my life-long dream. Second, it means that I will finally be able to put a lot of my pent up energy to use in helping those who cannot defend themselves. I have a passion for the arts and an equal passion for volunteering, so if I can somehow combine those two and get paid for it, that would be even better. I know that a lot of my entertainer friends find it difficult to be Christians in the entertainment field and not be prejudiced against because they refuse to take on certain roles or perform certain scenes. It is tough to be an entertainer, especially in this economy, but it is even harder when a chance finally does arise and it goes against your morals and beliefs.

Q. What do you wish you knew before you started law school?
A. A lot more about the law. All kidding aside, I have extensive knowledge about the legal field since I was employed with a solo practitioner in Harrisonburg, Virginia and then a large boutique firm in Coral Gables, Florida. I also have many friends who are lawyers, all of which immediately asked me why I wanted to do such a crazy thing as become a lawyer and then went on to tell me the horrors that would await me. So far the only horrors I have run across are the exams.

Q. What surprised you most about Regent?
A. What surprised me most about Regent was how incredible the professors truly are. I had read the literature prior to applying, and read reviews online, but it really did not make a complete impact until I experienced it firsthand. The fact that my lawyer friends would tell me they barely ever saw their professors was at first disheartening upon arriving through Regent’s doors, but the fact that the professors make themselves so accessible is amazing and a huge relief. It is also good so that they know my name when they see me camped out in front of their doors.

Q. How is law school different from your college experience?
A. Oh let me count the ways. Undergrad was awful. I made it through but was unhappy about my experience. It was not what I expected at all. Grad School was much better. The professors were just like the ones here at Regent. They were incredibly helpful, accessible and accommodating, especially since I was working full-time, I was the PR Director for a non-profit, I was performing in a musical revue, two plays, and was singing, acting and directing worship services at my church, all in the same year! Needless to say, we all made it through fairly unscathed minus my sprained foot. Yes, I was on crutches during that whirl-wind life-style.

Q. What is your favorite class so far and why?
A. I really enjoy all of my classes, but I would have to say that my favorite class is Property, followed by Contracts and Civ Pro. (Sorry Professor Duane!) I guess I find Property interesting just because I have dealt with property issues for years now helping my mother with the renters in our house in Miami. I also worked in a law firm in Miami that specialized in Condominium and Homeowners Associations, so we dealt a lot with different types of property issues.

Q. What kind of law do you hope to practice after graduation?
A. My goal is to become an entertainment lawyer. That has been my dream, but I also have a passion for animals and non-profits, and since Animal Law is becoming more popular I may start looking more into that field as well.

Q. How would you describe the group of your closest friends found here at Regent?
A. Well, they are all crazy for one. We are in law school. We have to be a little crazy, right? I would have to say eclectic. Since we all come from different backgrounds, it makes for a wonderful potpourri of personalities. What is also nice is that we have not gotten sick of each other after hours and hours of studying together. That is what true friendship is made of.

Q. How do you prefer to study?
A. It depends. I normally study better solo. Always have. But, I like to bounce questions and thoughts off of others to make sure that I am still on the same page. This is one thing I had to learn last semester, to adapt to a study group environment. However, most of the time I need to be holed up in my apartment just me and my work for hours at a time, until my brain just stops.

Q. What is your favorite book of all time and why?
A. Anything by John Grisham. I know, sounds like a typical law student, but I just can’t help myself. Whenever I see a Grisham, I have to read it, although, I have to admit that I have not been able to read the last few due to school. Imagine that.

Q. What is your favorite bible verse? In what way does it speak to you or inspire you?
A. There are so many, but the two that really speak to me are Phillippians 4: 6-7, 13, and Jeremiah 29:11. The verses in Phillippians are especially appropriate now that I am in law school. However, they have always rung true throughout my life. And the Jeremiah verse tends to go hand-in-hand with the Phillippians verses. Whenever, I start to feel anxious about what I am doing with my life, or if I am doing the right thing, these verses remind me to not be anxious because God is in control. He knows what is best for me, and I just need to let go and let Him guide my path.

Q. If you could meet with anyone alive or dead, who would it be and why?
A. Easy one. Jesus. Just to have the opportunity to sit and listen to his teachings and wisdom would take my breath away. When I read about how those who were able to be near him and listen to him, yet chose not to, I envy their opportunity but pity their foolishness. To have the opportunity to be near God would be an experience like no other.

Q. If you could have lunch with any faculty member or administrator at Regent who would it be and why?
A. Pat Roberston. I find him to be the most interesting and hilarious person, outside of my professors, of course. I would just like to listen to his story of how he became the person he is today and hear about his trials and tribulations throughout his journey. What a wonderful man of God! And with such intelligence, humility and grace. I would like to have the opportunity to just glean a little of that, so that I may somehow try to emulate that in my own life.

Q. If you had an entire weekend available, what would you do in the Hampton Roads area?
A. You mean to tell me that there is life outside of Regent? Kidding. I would just like to take the time to explore my surroundings. I have not had the chance to do that. I know where the malls are. That is very important. I would like to go horseback riding on the beach, go to a local theater to see a performance, visit a museum or two, just explore what little gems are hidden in this area.

Q. Is there anything else you would like your peers or future law students to learn about you?

A. I have experienced a lot and I have accomplished a lot in my life, but I won’t expand on that here. I would rather save those topics for more personal and meaningful conversations.

Study groups are once again gathering in the library study rooms. Students are heading to Career Services on the second floor of Robertson Hall to check out study aids.

First year law students are finishing their Christian Foundations paper, a take home citations exam for LARW, and are studying class notes and outlines feverishly in preparation for final exams.

This is definitely the final stretch in our semester long, legal education marathon. Law students have this last week of classes and then final exams over the next two weeks.

For those of us who woke up today feeling exhausted or just need a little kick to make it through this last stretch, remember that the first floor of the Library has a savory solution to make you smile. For just a dollar you can brew up a number of tasty tea or coffee creations that are guaranteed to boost your energy.

"Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus." --Philippians 4:6-7

By Stephanie Hartman

Amber Tones

Regent University is such a beautiful campus, especially this autumn season. Meet your new Regent Law Life in Photos Blogger, Stephanie Hartman (photographed near San Luis Obispo, California).

This is my first year studying law at Regent University. My goal is to one day work as an advocate in immigration law, international law, or with a non-profit organization. I enjoy exploring new places, reading Russian literature, and I am currently learning to play the piano. Virginia is now my home, but my heart will always be in Las Vegas, Nevada where I was born and raised.

With this blog I plan to share amazing pictures that capture the beauty of Regent's campus, student life, and also feature biographies of individual law school students. I will take pictures using either my iPhone or Cannon Digital camera.

If you have any recommendations for places and people to photograph please let me know! It represents the innumerable souls that have been saved through God’s use of the Christian Broadcasting Network.

What was dedicated as an understated monument to evangelism recently underwent a little facelift. Instead of the sloping solid black base that peaked at the mouth of the flame, a simple, yet bold white silhouette of the globe has been painted over the black background. While this may seem an insignificant act of upkeep, it comes at quite the a propos time here in the law school.

As I type this, 12 Regent Law students are refusing to wait to change the world until after earning their degrees, but have instead fixed their faces like flints on God’s calling for their lives. From Richmond, Va. and San Diego, Ca., to Mexico City, Moscow, India, and South Korea, the 12 interns for the new Center for Global Justice are promoting the rule of law and seeking justice for the world's downtrodden. I could not help but think of these passionate and dedicated students as I walked by the flame that now seems to represent an entirely different aspect of Christ’s love.

The flame was built to represent the Love that saves from sin and death, and now the flame stands to represent the Love that frees from tyranny and oppression.

So next time you pass the flame I challenge you to not only thank God for the salvation of the souls of the people it depicts, but to ask Him for grace and justice for those who haven’t the strength to ask for themselves.

This time tomorrow 119 Juris Doctor degrees will have been conferred, 119 names announced, 119 tassels turned, and 119 of Regent Law’s alumni will be plunging head-first into that all too imminent realm allusively referred to as “the real world.”

But what were the last three (or more) years of law school for these 119 men and women if not reality?

Sleepless nights and countless hours spent poring through cases, preparing briefs, and identifying fact patterns were not figments of their imaginations. And what is more real than the exultation that accompanies a passing grade, competition win, appointment to a desired internship, understanding of a concept previously considered impossible to grasp, or a study break long overdue?

The confusion, stress, prayers, elation, caffeine jolts and tears of angst and joy of 119 students and their families, friends, and professors could not have been more real—and are exactly what compose the so-called real world.

So tomorrow 119 real Regent Law students will become real Regent Law alumni to the soundtrack of snapping flash bulbs, explosive applause, “Pomp and Circumstance,” and the real beating of their real hearts, as they sit in really uncomfortable plastic chairs.

This is real life in the real world.
Thus, the library was closed and therefore empty for the bulk of the weekend. Most students took advantage of this rather uncharacteristic closure just prior to finals as an excuse to take a day off and enjoy the holiday as a much needed break in the middle of exams.

But first thing Monday morning the law library was back to business as usual with every corner bustling with activity (particularly brain activity) as students pull out all the stops that stand between them and summer vacations and internships.

Some students work best individually, some in closed off carrels on the “quiet side” of the library, others at group tables on the “talking side,” and still others in study rooms. For this group of students, however, the comfortable couches and abundant natural lighting of the Law Library Balcony—which overlooks Robertson Hall, the Communications Building, the Student Center, and the fountain—is the opportune study environment on a sunny spring day. Although a year’s worth of work has boiled down to this week they have refused to be intimidated, but instead kick-up their bare feet and embrace the challenge.

With one week of finals down and just a few days left of the 2010-2011 school year, they are holding on to the hope that they are in the home stretch.

Meanwhile, as many across the country are waiting for their April showers to bring May flowers, Virginia Beach is in full bloom – and it is only mid-March. The beautiful pink blossoms illuminating an early spring shower remind our students and faculty that this season of stress and uncertainty is only that - a season.

I think the lesson learned from such settings is depicted by Victorian poet Gerard Manley Hopkins better than any attempt of mine:

The world is charged with the grandeur of God.

 It will flame out, like shining from shook foil;
It gathers to a greatness, like the ooze of oil
Crushed. Why do men then now not reck his rod?
Generation have trod, have trod, have trod;
 And all is seared with trade; bleared, smeared with toil;
And wears man’s smudge and shares man’s smell: the soil
Is bare now, nor can foot feel, being shod.

And for all this, nature is never spent;
 There lives the dearest freshness deep down things;
And though the last lights off the black West went
Oh, morning, at the brown brink eastward, springs -
Because the Holy Ghost over the bent
World broods with warm breast and with ah! Bright wings.

But this is exactly what you find in the Regent Law Library.

Since law students spend countless hours in the library, Regent allows students to reserve study carrels on a per-semester basis. Those students who take advantage of this service have gone a step further than to simply house their books here; they turn their carrels into little pieces of home away from home, filling them with items that give them the comfort and strength that make pressing into their studies less daunting.

Not only that but carrels also serve as places (other than on Facebook that is) for students to leave notes, Bible verses, and gifts in the hopes of encouraging or brightening another’s day, and to get to know each other in a slightly less academic atmosphere.

At $10 per-semester, a study carrel is one of the least expensive, most effective investments Regent Law students make. It’s also an invaluable tool to continue to foster the supportive and caring community by which members of the Regent Law family are so blessed.

If you happen (or purpose) to be in Robertson Hall at 12:15 on Thursday afternoons you will find that Regent Law continues in and encourages this beautiful tradition at Law Chapel.

While attendance at Law Chapel is not mandated by the University, law students, staff, and faculty turn out every week to be refreshed by the message preached, the corporate prayer and worship, and the food and fellowship which follows. Those who attend find this an invaluable time to not only forget about tomorrow’s exam, this weekend’s paper presentation, or that ceiling-high stack of LRW (Legal Research and Writing) papers that need grading, but to be reminded of why we do what God has called us to do - and to do it as unto the Lord.

This photo was taken following a recent Law Chapel service. Several members of the Regent Law family - from Dean Brauch, to 1Ls, to part-time GAs - clustered around the Robertson Hall lobby to eat a delicious Chick-fil-A lunch, catch-up, and pray for one another.

So, every once in a while, and in quite the role-reversal, the world of Regent Law seems to stand still while the rest of the world rushes by.

Good thing “every once in a while” comes every Thursday afternoon.

The Annual Student/Faculty Retreat, held earlier this week, is a favorite event amongst attendants.

The morning started off at a local church with a continental breakfast, followed by a time of corporate praise and worship. Professor Mike Schutt spoke on “Drudgery, Footnotes, and Billable Life for Disciples” in what was far from just another lecture, after which alumnus Jonathan Feavel (’94) shared on “The Chief End of Man.” Next, students who felt impressed to give personal testimonies of their time at Regent Law were asked to do so during an open-mic session.

Students and faculty returned to campus to attend a luncheon in the Regent Library Atrium. Voices floating throughout the room carried conversation topics ranging from excitement about summer study abroad programs, to recent competition wins, to personal lives and family, to the retreat itself.

While one morning may not seem like much of a retreat, an overarching sense of peace resonated from one person to the next. And although we are back to business as usual, it feels a little less like business as usual.
They are not always predictable, and even when they are the degree of their intensity can rarely be known until they are in full swing.

Meteorologists predicted that yesterday a major winter blizzard would blow through Virginia Beach. Now, take the words “major” and “blizzard” with a grain of salt, this is after all, Virginia Beach. Regardless, I could not wait to wake up and open my window to a winter wonderland; but I didn’t. Nothing had changed in the weather since I had fallen asleep the night before.

Then, an hour later, the snow began to fall. And in the course of just three hours the entire landscape at Regent was covered with a cold cotton blanket a few inches thick. By 12:30 the University announced it would be closing early, and at 3:00 students, staff, and faculty trudged through the then rain and slush to their cars and homes.

So in only five hours the storm started and departed with little to show for it but a few patches of nearly melted snow.

It was out of just such a patch that the snapdragons accessorizing the entrance of Robertson Hall emerged. Although I have walked by them most every day since they were planted near two months ago they have never stood out quite like they did this morning; as though the bright white snow was sent for no other reason than to highlight their petals.

Doesn’t God use the storms of life to serve the same purpose?
Earlier this week the Law School’s faculty and staff came together for a time of food, fellowship and family at the annual Christmas party.

That the food was delicious and fellowship inspiring goes without saying. But if you had walked through Robertson Hall at just the right time you would have heard the voices of these men and women ringing out in praise to God for sending Jesus to Earth. And while it was certainly a joyful noise to the Lord, it should also serve as such to any student who happened to walk by - not just because the combination of their voices radiated a humble strength from the men and a graceful beauty from the women, but because these people with whom God has entrusted so many lives and callings have made it abundantly clear where their priorities lie.

So although the eyes of the people in this picture may be directed at the lyrics on the screen, that is not where they are focused. Their focus is at the foot of the cross.
For Regent Law students this serves as the last week of classes for the semester. While this is clearly cause for joy, that sense of euphoria is tainted by the knowledge that finals are just days away. And while the disappearance of law students during these December days has become something akin to a Regent urban legend, you need only know where to look for them: the Law Library.

Carrel after carrel and table after table are home to law students doing whatever is necessary to prepare for their finals. For some that means using an iPod to tune out the world around them, while others seem to let the words of the multiple books and outlines engulfing them produce the same effect. For the unsuspecting subject of this photo it means taking a nap.

Who doesn’t know that feeling of reading several pages of text before realizing you have no idea what any of it was about, or of reading the same line countless times? What about that involuntary response of the head to the body’s depleted energy supply, known as “the nod?” These are the times when you realize that a nap, though seemingly accomplishing nothing, is the most productive thing you can do.

Let’s face it, sometimes the best study tool is a study break.
