#71 – Crying Over You

A few cool things that I want to share with you. First, I have been watching The UB40 Story of Reggae DVD from 1999. There is a great scene where they intersperse footage from their version of “Crying Over You” with footage from Ken Boothe singing it in Jamaica at their Oracabessa studio. It made such an impact on me that I immediately wanted to play the original Ken Boothe song for you. Then I decided to just pull the audio from the DVD and play that segment for you back to back.

Second, one of my best listeners, Lynda, sent me the original R&B instrumental, “Party Time,” by Ramsey Lewis. It definitely makes you want to get up and move. It will also remind you where Dave Barker & Ansel Collins got their inspiration for “Double Barrel.”

Third, I am crazy for “Time To Shine” by Laden, a young Jamaican who is singing and rapping about reality, something we rarely hear about anymore on radio in the United States. It’s all about bragging and spending money when the reality for most people–even singers and DJs in Jamaica–is that they don’t have a lot of extra money to throw away. The video is very good so do a Google search and watch it. This song is so original and unique, yet it will make an instant impression. Let me know what you think of it.

On October 11, Alton Ellis passed away. He was 70 years old. His first recorded song was “Muriel” in 1959 with Eddie Perkins. He continued to record and perform right into August of this year. Alton is best-known for the music he sang from 1966-1968, when Jamaican popular music was known as rock steady. I consider rock steady music to be some of the classiest and most dignified music around, and Alton seemed to keep that rock steady performance style throughout his entire singing career.

This show was a blast to record. My mind raced back to the days of going to college in Boston, where I did a lot of walking and listening to music. I remember walking to an arcade near the Arlington T stop and playing some pinball between classes, then stopping at the mall at Copley and buying Heavy D’s Peaceful Journey CD. Then I’d walk across the street and wait for my train at South Station while I listened to my music with oversized Sony headphones so I could get the best bass and overall sound quality. I remember dancing solo at a Cambridge club to the hot combination tune of the day, “The Jam” by Shabba Ranks & KRS-1, and having a girl approach me to tell me she liked the way I move. Toward the end of my high school years, I would listen to WERS 88.9 FM’s nightly reggae show, “Rockers.” I’d also listen to parts of their “urban” format show, “Eighty-Eight Nine at Night,” where the student DJs would play hip-hop, R&B, and house music. Listening to that show was a great opportunity to experience the crossover that was happening between reggae and hip-hop. This episode of Reggae Rhythm Update is the first part in a series of three that will chronicle that crossover sound. First up is one of my favorite rhythms, Alton Ellis’ precious and short, “A Fool.” After that, it’s another version excursion with Otis Gayle’s version of the Spinners’ “I’ll Be Around.” Both of these are Studio One rhythms. One correction: At the 1:42 mark I say, “90 minutes of Studio One brilliance.” I meant to say “90 seconds…” in reference to the very short Alton Ellis track that is about to end.

Kingston’s entrance is quite a production, with the music, the lights, and the huge Jamaican flag lit up across the stage. This all instrumental show begins at the foundation, with the immortal Studio One rhythm, “Rockfort Rock.” After that it’s all ’70s instrumentals, some of them dread, funky, and soulful like Negril’s “Rasta,” and some of them sugary sweet like Familyman’s “Well Pleased” and Jackie Mittoo’s “Ram Jam.” Listen to the horn, keyboard, and guitar leads while moving to the rhythm section. One of the great things about doing this show is that I get to speak to some of my musical heroes. Half Pint is one of those artists that I discovered while doing my radio show at Emerson College in Boston. Starting one night, young ladies would call and request his new song at the time, “Substitute Lover.” That song turned out to be one of my all-time favorites, along with “Level the Vibes,” with which I’d open my show week after week. #44 – Mikey Dread Tribute

During the late 1970s, Mikey “Dread” Campbell was a radio disc jockey on JBC radio when it was uncommon for Jamaican radio to broadcast reggae music. On his “Dread at the Controls” show, he played current popular music while displaying his musical knowledge by dropping in Studio One originals to show the history of the music. His first recorded single was also called “Dread at the Control,” and guess what he called his record label. He produced some of the most exciting contemporary music of the late ’70s and early ’80s, and his dub sides were very popular. On this program, you’ll hear Mikey Dread’s radio background come through is his music. Mikey Dread was just 54 years old when he passed away. He died 6 months after he was diagnosed with a brain tumor. On #44, I pay tribute to the rub-a-dub master.

Joe Gibbs passed away in a Kingston hospital on February 21st. This episode is a tribute to him, with a great capsule career overview by England’s most prolific reggae producer, the Mad Professor. #32 – Tyrone Taylor Tribute

One day after recording #31, news broke that Tyrone Taylor had passed away. He was just 50 years old. I consider Tyrone Taylor one of Jamaica’s great soul voices, in the vein of Ken Boothe and Beres Hammond. In 1994, when I was hosting my show at Emerson College’s WERS 88.9 FM in Boston, I was blown away by Tyrone’s “Rainy Sunset,” a sort of part two to his 1981 smash, “Cottage in Negril.” I new of “Cottage,” but at the time, I didn’t know he was still making new music. I was impressed that his voice was as soulful as ever. Join me in remembering that great voice.

Ben E. King’s 1961 classic, “Stand By Me” is the inspiration for Sean Kingston’s pop smash, “Beautiful Girls.” So naturally, the program starts off with the original. It’s Thursday night, October 18, 2007, and I read the news of Lucky Dube’s death less than an hour ago. It hit me pretty hard because he’s one the artists whose music and lyrics I respect. I thought of calling someone or getting on the internet to post a message or read what others were saying, and then it hit me. What an opportunity I have, being able to record a postcast right here at home, and then get it out there instantly. #26 is free of hype and frills. It’s just an opportunity for me to talk about Lucky Dube, who I have seen in concert and talked to on the phone, and play his music in remembrance. After listening to it, I hope you can feel at least somewhat bit better.

Per listener request, I present the “Left with a Broken Heart” rhythm. Some people are surprised to find out that Dennis Brown’s “Revolution” and Barrington Levy’s “Here I Come” are actually versions of “Left with a Broken Heart.” But listen to the basslines and you’ll hear “Left with a Broken Heart” without the bridge and chorus changes. Many rhythm updates are just portions of a song’s bassline–usually the most memorable section–repeated over and over.

Welcome back to Reggae Rhythm Update from wherever you are in the world. I’ve been on vacation this week, doing things like attending the Topsfield Fair–America’s oldest agricultural fair, going to the beach, taking walks, and later today, bowling down some candlepins (there’s a Massachusetts reference for ya), and then tonight in Boston, seeing my favorite indie pro wrestling league, Ring of Honor. On today’s show, I explore two rhythms, Johnny Clarke’s “Ride on Girl” and the Shark’s “How Could I Live.” Dennis Brown covered the song for Joe Gibbs in 1978 and changed the name to “How Could I Leave.” I also play some great, late ’70s Aswad and Bim Sherman tunes.
