Time to say goodbye

Hi guys and girls. Unfortunately I have bad news about the show as it pertains to future episodes. As you know, I haven’t recorded an episode since July 1, 2011 and it doesn’t look like I’ll be recording another episode anytime soon. So rather than leave you with a “pod-fade” where the podcast just disappears without any closure, I’ve recorded this goodbye. Please have a listen to the audio. No music, just me talking.

In a nutshell, my time is too limited and I’m stretched too thin to keep recording episodes. I need closure for myself and I think I owe it to you. I feel that life is about balance, and I need to keep mine in check.

I plan to keep this web site up so that you can grab all back episodes. So whether or not they’re still on iTunes, you can grab them here.

Thanks to all the creative reggae music artists, musicians, producers, producers, and labels that have fueled the show. Thanks to all the subscribers and to those who have provided great feedback to me. I will treasure all of your comments, e-mails, Facebook messages, and voice mails. First you’ll hear a short version excursion on the Techniques’ “It’s You I Love” rhythm, originally on the Treasure Isle label in 1968. Gappy Ranks closes out the excursion with his very pretty and autotuned vocal on “Musical Girl.” Then it’s short rhythm update of Bob Marley’s “Coming in from the Cold.” The second half of the show features Jamaica’s young singers. Even the dee-jays show they can sing with help from autotune.

#81 – Sugar Minott Tribute

This is a musical tribute to Sugar Minott who passed away Saturday, July 10 in Kingston, Jamaica. My best memory of Sugar was from his performance at Boston’s Harbor Lights venue (or it might have already changed names to Bank of America Pavilion) in the mid ’90s. Garnet Silk’s “Hello Mama Africa” and Beres Hammond’s “Come Back Home” were big dancehall songs at the time, and Sugar had a cover on the same Startrail rhythm, “Smile” where the chorus goes, “Dance, dance, dance this reggae music…” Sugar stopped the band a number of times and told the crowd that when he came to the chorus, he wanted all of us to stand up on our feet and dance to the music. He was insistent that we comply and wouldn’t accept anyone sitting. I think most of us finally followed his wishes so he was able to finish the song and continue to the next in his set.

#75 – Cleveland “Clevie” Browne Interview

As a tribute to the late Wycliffe “Steely” Johnson, who passed away last month, I’m presenting an unreleased interview–never heard until now–with Cleveland “Clevie” Browne, who along with Steely, were Jamaica’s top musicians and producers during the mid to late 80s into the early ’90s. Very seldom does a working musical partnership last so long and include so much success. This interview was recorded in February of 2008. Clevie had just come back from the first annual Reggae Academy Awards show in Jamaica. He talked about his run with Steely as they recorded at breakneck pace and delivered classic one-rhythm albums to VP in the US. I asked Clevie about today’s deejays compared to people he’d worked with in the past like Tiger and Gregory Peck. He spoke about recording the Joe Gibbs tribute album and remembering the smell and taste of the studio and other studios like Channel One. Perhaps most important to Clevie is keeping the older Jamaican music styles alive. You’ll realize his commitment when you listen to this interview.

#71 – Crying Over You

A few cool things that I want to share with you. First, I have been watching The UB40 Story of Reggae DVD from 1999. There is a great scene where they intersperse footage from their version of “Crying Over You” with footage from Ken Boothe singing it in Jamaica at their Oracabessa studio. It made such an impact on me that I immediately wanted to play the original Ken Boothe song for you. Then I decided to just pull the audio from the DVD and play that segment for you back to back.

Second, one of my best listeners, Lynda, sent me the original R&B instrumental, “Party Time,” by Ramsey Lewis. It definitely makes you want to get up and move. It will also remind you where Dave Barker & Ansel Collins got their inspiration for “Double Barrel.”

Third, I am crazy for “Time To Shine” by Laden, a young Jamaican who is singing and rapping about reality, something we rarely hear about anymore on radio in the United States. It’s all about bragging and spending money when the reality for most people–even singers and DJs in Jamaica–is that they don’t have a lot of extra money to throw away. The video is very good so do a Google search and watch it. This song is so original and unique, yet it will make an instant impression. Let me know what you think of it.

On October 11, Alton Ellis passed away. He was 70 years old. His first recorded song was “Muriel” in 1959 with Eddie Perkins. He continued to record and perform right into August of this year. Alton is best-known for the music he sang from 1966-1968, when Jamaican popular music was known as rock steady. I consider rock steady music to be some of the classiest and most dignified music around, and Alton seemed to keep that rock steady performance style throughout his entire singing career.

This show was a blast to record. My mind raced back to the days of going to college in Boston, where I did a lot of walking and listening to music. I remember walking to an arcade near the Arlington T stop and playing some pinball between classes, then stopping at the mall at Copley and buying Heavy D’s Peaceful Journey CD. Then I’d walk across the street and wait for my train at South Station while I listened to my music with oversized Sony headphones so I could get the best bass and overall sound quality. I remember dancing solo at a Cambridge club to the hot combination tune of the day, “The Jam” by Shabba Ranks & KRS-1, and having a girl approach me to tell me she liked the way I move. Toward the end of my high school years, I would listen to WERS 88.9 FM’s nightly reggae show, “Rockers.” I’d also listen to parts of their “urban” format show, “Eighty-Eight Nine at Night,” where the student DJs would play hip-hop, R&B, and house music. Listening to that show was a great opportunity to experience the crossover that was happening between reggae and hip-hop. This episode of Reggae Rhythm Update is the first part in a series of three that will chronicle that crossover sound. One of the great things about doing this show is that I get to speak to some of my musical heroes. Half Pint is one of those artists that I discovered while doing my radio show at Emerson College in Boston. During the late 1970s, Mikey “Dread” Campbell was a radio disc jockey on JBC radio when it was uncommon for Jamaican radio to broadcast reggae music. On his “Dread at the Controls” show, he played current popular music while displaying his musical knowledge by dropping in Studio One originals to show the history of the music. His first recorded single was also called “Dread at the Control,” and guess what he called his record label. He produced some of the most exciting contemporary music of the late ’70s and early ’80s, and his dub sides were very popular. On this program, you’ll hear Mikey Dread’s radio background come through is his music. Mikey Dread was just 54 years old when he passed away. He died 6 months after he was diagnosed with a brain tumor. On #44, I pay tribute to the rub-a-dub master.

Joe Gibbs passed away in a Kingston hospital on February 21st. This episode is a tribute to him, with a great capsule career overview by England’s most prolific reggae producer, the Mad Professor. The program begins with some of Joe Gibbs’ earliest work and moves chronologically, right up to Steely & Clevie’s 2002 tribute album called Old to the New.
