Beenie Man "Kingston to King of the Dancehall" Album Review

BIG Package!!! Well done!!
Firstly, Beenie has been recording since 9 years of age. Its now 20 years of music. He was crowned DJ of the year in Jamaica numerous times including a five-year streak in the 1990s. He has won nearly every major award in reggae or Caribbean music, from MOBO to Tamika, to Grammy. Its impossible to capture such a reign on ONE CD. So I must give them credit for undertaking such a difficult task. This is an excellent package filled with hardcore hits and good video footage.
The CD places the chosen hits in chronological order, which is useful for charting the success of Jamaica`s most seasoned danchall ambassador. "Who Am I", featured first, was his international breakthrough, earning him reviews in Newsweek magazine--a first at that time for a danchall entertainer. The Punaany ridim is featured here in 2 variations in Romie and Girls Dem Sugar which put Beenie firmly in the international limelight. Those singles galvanised his urban popularity in the mid to late 90s, being featured in a variety of remix styles. "Slam" introduced a different meaning to an old word and now in dancehall circles the word has only one mischeivous meaning. Other favorites here include " Row Like A Boat" which signalled Beenies return to local chart topping after international and crossover success on Art and Life. This DJ is known for his versatility on stage and in the studio and "Nuff Gal" proves why. "King of the Dancehall" a more recent hit, displays Beenies talent for sexually outrageous lines. Dave Kelly, the ace dancehall producer, teamed up with Beenie in 2004 to produce the massive hit "Dude" also featured here. After a lukewarm start to the millenium, this hit put Beenie back at the top of his game.
This CD reverberates with energy and attitude, and is a good tribute to a veteran artiste who after 2 decades is still thrilling audiences worldwide. Seen strictly from an artistic or entertainment viewpoint, this CD will certainly not disappoint.

Disclaimer:
Dancehall is not for everyone. Dancehall fans know that if you listen for a while you will hear calls to burn the Vatican, assassinate world leaders and shoot those who cooperate with the police. Sounds a lot like its cousin rap music, doesn`t it? So homosexuals should not feel they are getting any special hate. And neither Beenie, NOR DANCEHALL, is singularly guilty of these now so-called lyrical crimes.

By the way, moderators, isn`t it a contravention of the rules here that certain reviews do not even address the content of the CD they are supposed to be reviewing?

He advocates the killing of gays
In his music, Beenie Man advocates killing gays. More than
30 gays have been killed in Jamaica, where he comes from.
His music has lots of influence there. In some cases mobs
sang his anti-gay songs while they killed a man who might have been gay.
When asked to apologize and change his ways he wrote a song about how he
would not apologize. If someone advocated the killing
of Blacks or Jews, they would not be tolerated. It seems strange
that in the 21st century the world still tolerates someone
who advocates the killing of gays. I suspect that the world
would not tolerate this if white men were getting killed.
Please don't support him by purchasing his music.

I man don't want to watch no TV, I man wanna listen to a Dub LP! So says Ranking Dread on his debut dub album. Originally released in 1982 this Dub LP has gained cult status due in part to the fantastic cover art of Rod Vass. To some this is THE DUB album by which all others should be measured. It's hard for us to be objective about that statement but when you hear the incredible mixes from King Tubby I am sure that you will have to think about it too. King Tubby takes ridims laid by Sly and Robbie and injects them with a power that screams "this is a Tubbys mix" . The masterful use of echo and reverb that goes to the outer edge of dub yet never loses control. Check out the stellar mix of Bob Marleys "I Don't Want To Wait In Vain". There were five tracks to a side on the original LP and the reissue LP is an exact copy of the original with King Tubby and Sly & Robbie on the A side with apprentice Scientist and Roots Radics doing the honors on side B . Scientist flexes his muscles on Side B (LP) track 6 on the CD with an absolutely incredible show of echo control on the opening drum sequence, this track I play over and over. Each track showing that the Master had passed on his skills to his protégé and apprentice, then you get to one of the gems, a crucial rendition of "No No No". Not to be missed There were only 1,000 pressed in 1982 and very rarely do they surface to the buying public. This release will give everyone the opportunity to have their own copy and play it till it's worn out Available on CD and LP, get one for the car and one for the HIFI. Outstanding, beginning to end
I picked up this album after buying the Millennium Collection albums for Steel Pulse and Third World. Both were outstanding, so I ordered Black Uhuru. It has quickly become my favorite of the three, although they are all outstanding. The production quality is great and there isn't a single song that I dislike. My favorites are "Sponji Reggae" and "Darkness" but I really dig every single track. When I put this CD on, at home, at work, or driving, I uncontrollably move my body and bob my head to the beat. Although some of the lyrical content is dark, describing the struggle against and under the oppression of Babylon, the music nevertheless fills me with joy.

Jamaican Semi-Soul Jams
This is a compilation of Phyllis Dillon's recordings - not a "tribute" in the sense of people recording covers of her recordings.

Sure, there are 29 songs - almost 80 minutes of music - but the sound quality is poor. It is not the worst I've ever heard, it is not like an old Ma Rainey or scratchy Billie Holiday recording, but there is not credit given for remastering, and I think it is safe to assume that these recordings, from 1966-1971, were NOT digitally remastered.

The music is OK, Dillon is not particularly Soulful or vocally dynamic, but it is some pleasant Reggae/Jamaican-style music. The booklet includes an essay by Mike Atherton and a few photos.

Best roots Reggae I've heard in years
A friend recommanded this album to me and what a surprise it was to hear it. From the first song to the last it is pure delight. It is recorded by Scientist, disciple of King Tubby himself. You're talking pure roots Reggae with conscious words and biblical overtones like you don't hear often anymore except for the likes of Burning Spear and Culture. Bob Marley would be proud of that one.

Bedouin Soundclash "Sounding A Mosaic" Album Review

Put This In Your Soundsystem
To start, there isn't a band making such heartfelt, intricate music as these three Canadians. In fact, their three-album repertoire, embellished tremendously by 2007's "Street Gospels," is as moving and legitimate as the first albums by the Clash. That says a great deal, but not enough about what Bedouin Soundclash has added to the international culture. It reminds me of a Haitian friend who grew up listening to Bob Marley without ever understanding the words; he just felt the rhythm and power manifested in the sound and knew it was crucial. This too is crucial music, and does not fear shifting styles throughout the recordings.
From the tender "12:59 Lullaby" to the psychedelic "Jealousy," Jay Malinowski injects the voice of a renegade rasta into the reggae, ska, calypso and rock music laid down by bassist Eon Sinclair and drummer Pat Pengelly. They have now added backup singers, as well as Darryl Jenifer of Bad Brains fame to make the circuit complete. "Jeb Rand" and "Criminal" are outstanding tracks on "Sounding a Mosaic," but you really need to hear "Sailin' On," a Soundclash-Bad Brains joint venture available only on one of their singles. The Japanese version of "Mosaic" includes a great cover of U2's "New Years Day." This band must be appreciated for its body of work, including "Root Fire," a tribe of tight songs previously only available in Canada. This is civil, conscious and progressive rebel music surfing atop the chaos of radio nonsense, sure to reach the promised land before long. The secret is out. Buy the music, share it with your friends and ignite the revolution.

The band consists of vocalist and guitarist Jay Malinowski, bassist Eon Sinclair and drummer Pat Pengelly. They released their debut album, Root Fire 2001 with former djembe player Brett Dunlop, and Sounding a Mosiac in 2004 with the current lineup. The band is set to release their follow up record 'Street Gospels' in 2007. During the recording of Sounding a Mosaic Bedouin Soundclash formed a close bond with producer Darryl Jenifer, of Bad Brains, who they continue to work with today. Despite drastic differences in sound, Bedouin Soundclash and D Jenifer are set to release a collaborative Bad Brains vs. Bedouin Soundclash mash-up later in 2007. Turbulence "Triumphantly" Album Review

An Exercise in Potential. . .
Music may very well, and seemingly does, strike every bone in Turbulence's body from his foot to his dread, and it is becoming increasingly evident in his ability to release albums consistently, multiple times a year. All of his album fall over a certain line of quality and, to date, have yet to disappoint. He is probably setup to be the future king of roots reggae, and with the recent resurgence of the music, it is certainly no small role by which to call someone, fortunately, this someone has the skills.

Hearing Turbulence over the course of a few years now and now 9 albums, his messages have pretty much become clear. His brand of reggae follows a great deal that of his mentor, Sizzla's. Take away a lot of the edginess and add a mellower vibe and you'll have Turbulence almost exactly.

His newest album, Triumphantly, follows what I still maintain is his best effort to date, the brilliant Join Us on Kingston Records as well. Nope, Triumphantly isn't as good as the massive Join Us, it doesn't offer the variety of brilliance of as high of level as its predecessor did, but the album is still pretty good on its own merits. The best tune here is probably Music is Life which is, oddly enough, his second combination track with Luciano, very good tune. Also have to check the lyrically wonderful Suffer No More, Gun Crazy and what I maintain is the album's second best, Blood Dem Out with the wonderful backing, beautiful song mixed with an edge.

Overall, this, amongst all of Turbulence's albums after his first 2 goes to show the start of his potential. You listen to some of the ranges on this record and its absolutely amazing, if you go backwards and get Join Us after this one, you can see what happens when he puts it all together. Also, you have to check out his underground album, Words of Wisdom, which is a better album than Triumphantly, but doesn't show quite the range. Check this one out if you're a fan, or if you just want to be in on the groundfloor of something special.

Gregory Isaacs "Masterclass" Album Review

Nice & Harmless
I almost feel timid in writing a review for a relatively current Gregory Isaacs album. Knowing what the man is in reggae music, what he has stood for over the years and what he has meant to the music overall, its impossible for me to give a completely impartial run of his most recent studio album, Masterclass (unbelievably recorded for Greensleeves Records).

The first thing you, as a fan of Isaacs, will undoubtedly notice is the apparent deterioration of his legendary voice. Dont get me wrong, he still sings a reggae tune better than 9 out of 10 singers ever will but his beautiful fragile tones which once told everyone about his Night Nurse have taken a slight dip for the Masterclass. What is most impressive, however, about this album is that he can still put together one curiously perfect love/jilted lover songs seemingly at whim. And with the unknown (to me) Steve Martin on the board, many of these songs surprisingly work completely well on Masterclass.

My choice for the best of the album is without a doubt the opener Secret Love Affair which perhaps best utilizes the backup singer. That's another story on this one the female backup singing on Masterclass is. . . a masterclass, featured are veterans such as King of Kings vet Heather Cummings and Leba Hibbert. Also worth checking on the album is the beautiful old sounding Lonely Street (again featuring awesome backing by Ms Cummings), expectedly an ode to Isaacs old friend Dennis Brown, a fantastic version of Stay at Home and the 'cute' 15 Minutes Ago.

15 Minutes Ago is one of the more interesting songs here. Listening to it, perhaps more than any of the other 13 tracks, it shows the deterioration in Isaacs voice, but it also shows what he's learned after all these years that he doesn't have to completely blow the candles out to still make a wish. His experience alone makes the song very very good. Hungry for Your Love and the albums 2nd best tune, Wanted List round out this decent album.

Overall, there will always be space in my cd player for a Gregory Isaacs album as long as he is making music. And with the current trend in reggae music being what it is more and more recycling of older riddims, he just might have added more and more years to his career in terms of being more and more relevant to a younger audience. I would absolutely love to see what Isaacs could do on some of the bigger and better sets these days. His day, however, has come and gone, but every few years or so, he'll come back and remind everyone EXACTLY how it used to be.

A man who spoke to me
My fiance introduced me to reggae music a couple of years ago. Before that, I was relatively unfamiliar. In his song "Fools Die", Peter Tosh has spoken to me on a base level of humanity. He was a spiritual feeler of our souls. Not only did he have an incredible voice, but what he spoke really touches my most sacred place. I rank him as one of the most incredible writers and singers of our time. I am sorry for his loss in our world.

The Meditations "Stand in Love" Album Review

ROOT ROCK REGGAE CLASSIC
" Stand In Love" is easily of the best reggae albums. The best part of this album is the undeniable emotion that the songs are sung with. I haven't come across a group or individual that communicates such intense emotion in their voices as The Meditations.

Every facet of this album is great. A must have for all long time Meditations fans.

This is an underrated Mad Professor album. I don't understand why it isn't more generally well liked (people I've played it for have liked it). With the exception of a few speech excerpts at the intro to each track, its completely instrumental... It has a dreamy, fluid sound to it; good music; great for listening or back ground.

Looks like I needed to revise my review (again). Amazon is now offering this package for $16.23, in the DVD/CD format which is less than the CD/DVD format. Same product, just different packaging. So buy the DVD/CD format and save some money. All the original hits, some new hits, classic videos, new videos, plus some gorgeous babes and the Lowrider Car of the Year. Great Value, Great Package. Machete Records releaseed another great CD/DVD package entitled "The Beginning" which includes both major Puerto Rican Artists and International Artists. It is truly the best of the best, and you have not seen these songs all over the place.

Sizzla "Life" Album Review

A SEQUEL WOULD BE WELCOMED!

I have viewed this interesting documentary, three times since 2001.

It is looking at the conditions of poverty and desperation inflicted on poor countries, such as Jamaica, by the agenda and policies of international agencies such as the International monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank.

At first, I found the documentary overdramatic--propaganda filled. In my opinion then, it did not adequately address the issue of the true nature of neo-liberalism ('globalization') in poor countries.

After reexamining the documentary, I concluded that the 'dramatization' may be necessary to convey the message effectively to people far removed from the scene of "Third World" poverty.

I am also wondering if the creators of "Life and Debt" have looked into the role of the local middle class in the perpetuation of the social and economic issues illustrated in the film.

Who are the local beneficiaries of IMF policies in the Caribbean, Latin America, Africa and Asia?

Perhaps, the local representatives of imperialism--rightwing and "Left-lites"--the lumpen-bourgeoisie!

Historically, members of this class worked to resist meaningful change coming from the people.

They work through their media and institutions to direct discontent and popular demands into the opportunistic arms of the main political parties, ensuring that the status quo of inequality from which their privileges spring, is not disrupted.

In fact, these political parties have ruled since independence, with a firm hand, using the police force brutally, with impunity against the people.

A sequel to "Life and Debt" would be welcomed, if it examines debt and poverty in the third world from a more historical and critical perspective.

"Life and Debt" is still a great documentary. I recommend it highly!

All around weak
Constantly looking for music that is white boy reggae influenced. This is such a disappointment, it's lame to even say I heard it. Long Beach Dub Allstars were lousy enough, though sometimes they came through with a catchy song. This has nothing but copycat Sublime beats, an awful voice, and kindergarden lyrics. Try State Radio (lead singer of Dispatch) for some substance.

Bunny Wailer "Tribute" Album Review

OK I guess --- but hardly one for the ages
A nice touch, I suppose --- the only surviving original Wailer singing a variety of Marley's pre- and post-1973 hits --- but this album seems largely uninspired and smacks more of the desire to make a quick buck than anything else. Bunny acquits himself decently but seems mostly to be going through the motions here. I suspect that the world of Reggae, running thinner & thinner on original ideas, turned once again to the well of Bob Marley, hoping to generate some more interest from the mainstream. It didn't work. The result is an album which isn't terrible, but nonetheless remains quite average & forgettable. If you never were to hear it, you wouldn't be missing anything.

WATCH OUT - this box has wrong track on disc 2
I've written glowing reviews of UM/Hip-O's 3 box set series of the complete Bob Marley & Wailers - what an incredible job they did gathering every known track and dub from 1966-1972.
(the other 2 sets are "Grooving Kingston 12" and "Fy-ah Fy-ah") BUT, this set unfortunately has a track on disc 2 (This Train)listed as the Pouder Version that is actually the Wail'n'Soul'm Version that already apperared on disc 1! I e-mailed UM about this and was told to return my set to them for a new one - when I did, I got back one with the same mastering mistake and a promo cut thru the bar-code. What a drag that they messed up such a great set.

This album is nothing but a few new tracks and 2 remixes....I think These guys should have dropped a special edition with everything from the first album a dvd and the new stuff the got here....Nonetheless great to have it if u want the extra tracks...Same flair and spice these guys have with every track they have made.....I think this was made for the purpose of selling to the American maintstream.....The first was released when the hype for reggaeton wasnt as huge but had a tight underground following....first time i heard reggaeton was when i was 10 years old in 1996 in PR and didnt get on to it till 2003....I guess the magic stays with us puertoricans even as we grow old...

Groundation "We Free Again" Album Review

Solid album
I liked this album, but i feel that it doesn't come close to Hebron's gate, their previous effort. I can't get beyond the background vocals, which draw the attention away from the solid grooves driving the song. They are a distraction and feel self-conscious to me. There's a reason they're called Background vocals.

Having said that, this is one solid band, and Hebron's Gate has been one of my favorites for the last couple of years. I love the jazz influences, and the feel to the songs, funky and profound at the same time. I was disappointed by this album, although there a re a couple of songs I listen to steadily, so the underpinnings are strong, but the window dressing distracts.

Sizzla "Stay Focus" Album Review

Stay Focus - A good title...
What can I say ? Sizzla releases more than 3 albums per year. They aren't all going to be gold...but what we have here is better than average Sizzla. Harder and faster beats along with his charged vocal stylings. There are parts where Sizzla seems to miss a beat with his vocals, and parts where his beat lacks creativity. His lyrics seem to have a positive vibe and he gives a great love song on track 8 "Mine and Only".

With an exception of 2 selective tracks, I enjoyed all the songs. They compare this to "Da Real Thing", the previous release to "Stay Focus". I enjoyed Stay Focus more...it kept my attention and had more energy than DRT. However, DRT sounds like Sizzla put more time, effort and creativity into the actual song writing. So, with that in mind, I like this album the best. But all of his releases have their own flavor. You must decide for yourself!

Here's a hello from Johannesburg, Dr Alban! Dr Alban, a Nigerian resident in Sweden, raps a profound message to his homeland and the rest of Africa using a curious Afro-Swedish mix: a type of music he described as Jungle Reggae Hip Hop. The friendly and uplifting title track was a huge hit while No Coke, the 2nd hit single, takes the reggae rhythm more seriously and is perhaps the best track on the album. But there are more surprises: familiar hooklines, a name check of all the "stars" in the new South Africa and on China Man he adds a bit of "jing yang ching yang hoo" to his already exotic Afro-Western mix. Best Reggae band from Brazil. From Brazil Tribo De Jah About tribo de jah Once upon a time not so very long ago, a group of young men met each other deep in the wilds of Brazil at the Maranhão School for the Blind. Four of them totally without any sight, the fifth only partially seeing. Their mutual love of music brought them together, and they began to develop their passion for music by creating instruments whenever they could and by discovering the tunes that floated in their heads and all around them everyday. After long, hard, and constant practice they became proficient enough to begin playing at popular dances, playing their own particular brand of Brazilian rhythms like 'serensta' and 'lambada' until one day they discovered the heartbeating rhythm of reggae. The reggae culture had become an unexplained phenomenon in Maranhão State, first invading its ghettos then proceeding to take over the whole interior of the state and beyond its borders, just as the music had around the world. During this time broadcaster 'Fauzi' Beydoun, who had been born in Sao Paulo to Italian-Lebanese parents, had returned to Brazil from the Ivory Coast of Africa with the rhythm of reggae pounding in his heart. As God would have it, Fauzi came across the others playing at a small club and he was greatly affected by the culture that had sprung up around the group and its music. Joining forces, Fauzi & Tribo De Jah decided to take on the world. It was also during this time that the group started to mix its roots reggae with messages of Peace, love, politics and social enlightenment. They played their own version of reggae that differs entirely to the public perception of that 'other' reggae, Jamaican style. Since the release of their first CD, Tribo De Jah have utilized elements of their native Brazilian culture in their songs, making a 'patent' on what is now lovingly referred to as "Brazilian reggae!' The band worked extremely hard over the years, and built a following of faithful fans around the world. A total of six (6) CDs are now on release by the band, distributed by Universal Music Brazil and all with above average sales there of over 60,000 units per title! Their latest release hit 50,000 units sold in less than three months, and the band's live performances continually sell out with an excess of 20,000 estastic fans at each of their concerts straining to see their idols. The music of Tribo De Jah transcends all borders and appeals to the world-at-large, with songs written and performed in English, Portuguese, French and Spanish. Bob Marley "Burnin" Album Review

Epitome of Wailers' Music
This is one of, if not my favorite Wailers/Marley CD. Right from the get-go, 'Get up, Stand up' sets the mood for the album. Followed by 'Hallelujah Time' then 'I Shot the Sheriff' and then just amazing. I have a hard time picking a favorite track, 'Small Axe' and 'Pass it on' are just amazing, as is Tosh's 'One Foundation'. My least favorite song on the album is Bob's most famous song, 'I Shot the Sheriff', which I feel lacks the same qualities that the rest of the tracks contain. Though it is still a good song, it doesn't come close to any of the other tracks on the album.
If you're new to the Wailers, this album is a great starting point, if you're familiar with their music, then this album will do nothing but bolster your appreciation for this phenomenal group of artists.

this compilation is a great display of a young bob marley and the original wailers, who were Peter Tosh and Bunny Livingstone. The three put together classic music that would eventually be put to mainstream when tosh left, and the wailers became three girls....whatever the case, this is a must have for ay reggae lover. a lot more pure than other bob marley material but still hard reggae and dub.

Thank Shabba Ranks for telling Buju to sing in this fashion as we have all inherited a gem of an artist after Marley, Tosh & Cliff. Here, this album will slightly dissapoint his steadfast Ragga & dancehall fans. Hey, nothing can beat 'Til Shiloh or Inna Heights but do not take away the talent which is personified by Buju. Sure, few tracks are lack-lustre, but his dancehall flair is still unrivalled. He is doing today what Bob Marley did in the 70's and 80's. He is a true Legend ....

Nazarenes "Songs of Life" Album Review

Spectacular
I just got this CD as part of a premium for contributing to KPFK, one of the Pacifica public radio stations. As with most public radio thank you gifts, I had to wait 4 months to get it. But boy was it well worth the wait!! All I can say is that these two Ethiopian brothers are truly blessed and so are we for hearing their music. I'd give this CD 6 stars if I could. Every track is a gem. If you don't believe me, just sample the lot. The melodies, rhythms, conscious lyrics and almost supernatural harmonizing of these guys make for strong medicine. I can't wait to buy their next album but for now I'm gonna be nourishing my soul with their Songs of Life.

I love this album, I listen to indie rock usually and I cannot get enough of this CD. I have had it for over a year and I still can't get enough! Great for smoking and driving! Used to U-Roy
U-Roy's Dread in Babylon is another in line of classics for the unorthadoxed singer/writer. Even though its a rather old cd, many of its songs are used in soundtracks for recent films. I.e. High Tension, After the Sunset, and City of God. For those of you unfamiliar with his style I caution you before buying this cd. Be prepared for elonggated scats and pseudo-harmonic melodies. The structure of the songs follow the traditional syncapation more familiar with reggae, but he primaraly talks the listener through each vocal journery, never jumping octaves or escalating in pitch. If you're expecting a Bob Marley, Ky-mani, Buju Bantu or I-Wanye sort of musician, this is not the cd for you. If on the other hand you enjoy "live" sounding bands, with improvised melodies, vocals and tunes then you'll defeniately want to buy this cd.

Feel Good, Feel Real Good!
Cocoa Tea is a very unusual singer. Cocoa Tea is probably the only person in the world that I know of that has the type of voice with which he could probably speak of flat out impending doom and yet strangely enough make all of his listeners feel good. It sounds like he records at his house, outside, just sitting around just reasoning or something singing all of his songs, it just so happens that everytime he does a full recording studio magically appears!
Having recently become a huge fan of the artist (of course i knew of his music, but didnt really invest in it too much until now)Tek Weh Yuh Gal is MASSIVE! Armed with what may or may not prove to be the biggest hit of his career Cocoa Tea has put up one of the biggest albums that I've heard in a long time. Of course you have the title track, which is pretty much a funny song, but its a feel good song on top of that (there is a difference), but then you have the wicked combinations with Anthony B (on of the album's best efforts) on Dance Hall Nice, a typically highly animated Kalonji on the Kushenpeng inspired Pass It Over; and a wicked combination with CUTTY RANKS! On top of the combinations, you have CT's usually high level material, the two opening songs on this album before the title cut are wonderful, love both Sunshine (which is nearly an imperial tune) and Have It Fi Mi.
Overall, like I said, this album is huge. There exists a point on this album where I pretty much lost it, it was so good that I forgot where I was, I feel asleep and dreamt that I was at a concert somewhere, the vibe here is that strong. Big album from a truly big artist.
On a side note, this is the second recent hit from rising Rasta label Kings of Kings, he first being label head, Iley Dread's Unite the People from 2003, both through VP Records, I hope to see more similar releases, Kings of Kings are apparently clueless as to how to make bad music.

I just wanted to express how good this Cd is. The best song, to me, is the track "Lighthouse". As Bramoi alluded to, it seems like the reincarnation of Peter Tosh filled with the spirit of the Most High. The title track has a great sound and message that is relevant to these times of upheaval and change. Bushman continues with quality for surity. The listener can tell that Bushman is a fan of country and folk tunes and transfers those vibes into a reggae style that is rich and soothing. Bless Up!

Gregory Isaacs "Mr Love" Album Review

Well Selected Retrospective of Issac's Work with Taxi Records
"Mr.Love" is an awful title for the best package of Gregory Isaacs' sublime work with Sly and Robbie at their Taxi studio from 1978 until 1982. It was era when the roots conscious reggae was at the summit of it's international popularity. Also included are selections from Gregory's earliest self produced albums with the Roots Radics musical crew on Virgin Records

Mr. Love is a deceptive title because is an equitable balance between Mr. Isaac's most powerful Rastafarian musical statements and the seductive lover's rock that earned Gregory his undisputed title of the Cool Ruler of the rockers genre. There are even a few selections from Gregory's 1979 masterpiece "Soon Forward" which Mr. Isaacs produced himself.

The collection is so well bundled, it has the seamless feel of an album, not a retrospective. The pseudo-indie label Caroline Records was able to cherry-pick from a broad selection because their parent company Virgin was once the world's largest independent label and the earliest business project of the swashbuckling Virgin CEO Richard Branson. Branson was one of the earliest non-Jamaican fans of reggae music. One of Branson's mission objectives in founding Virgin was to record and distribute reggae music in his native UK.

As a result of Branson's early involvement in the Jamaican reggae scene, Virgin Records holds the licensing rights to a bumper crop of classic reggae gems including Gregory's earliest blockbuster hits in Jamaica and the UK. Simon Heyworth who produced "Mr. Love" in 1995 cherry picked the selections for the album and certainly got it right. Heyworth was also at the helm for the digital re-mastering of "Mr. Love" a couple of years ago. The re-master adds a fresh layer of vibrancy and clarity to songs, that even Sly and Robbie were unable to capture at Taxi Studios, back in the stone age of primitive digital technology.

My favorite selection is "One More Time" an early dance hall favorite with a mesmerizing Hammond B-3 organ musical hook by keyboard maestro Steelie Johnson in his maximum overdrive modality. A trio of Gregory's best African consciousness "Black Liberation Struggle", "Universal Tribulation", and "Slave Market" are songs that anchor the selections of Gregory's earliest socio/political music. "Word of the Farmer" is an emotionally charged populist outcry against the exploitation of the Rastafarian sufferer. Another sufferer's tale "Poor and Clean" features a muscular one drop bass n' drum line from Sly and Robbie, enhanced by tour de force of exotic percussion flourishes by Roots Radics drummer Style Scott.

The lilting riddim driven "Soon Forward" perhaps Gregory's finest lover's rock ballad is the highlight of the lover's rock selections which includes chestnuts like "Poor Millionaire", "Lonely Girl", "Let's Dance", and perhaps my favorite of Gregory Isaacs rockers, "My Only Love" which is a concert favorite that first appeared on his 1981 self produced rockers album, "More Gregory."

Gregory Isaacs has always been a master vocal stylist with his impeccable ear for phrasing, his heartbreakingly bitter sweet tenor and his intuitive choices of cover and original songs that inevitably showcase his haunting and sensual style of singing. Gregory could have been an international reggae star with the stature of a Bob Marley or a Peter Tosh.

Sadly, Gregory's erratic behavior put him behind bars on drug or weapons charges at the peak of his career. Those busts made Gregory an undesirable alien outside of Jamaica and severely limited his ability to tour outside of Jamaica.

Gregory has often said his only regret in life was sidetracking his career by engaging in misbehavior that derailed his career. When Gregory engages in that sort of Brandoesque "I could have been a contender" pathos, he needs to be reminded that he was and is once and future King of Lover's Rock. "Mr. Love" is a fantastic point of introduction for anyone interested in roots reggae or Mr. Isaac's prolific career.

Man i told yall this was going to be the cronic. Any fan of sly & robbie this is a new style, verry laswell oriented with robbie playing a verry fusion basses bass and simple kicking it. Sly dunbar is on several cuts with laswell so thats still real. We also see a real rare glimse of laswell playing guitar and keys like on dub chamber 4 book of exitand version 2 version, But this got a hip hopping flavor with rapa and female vocals, some good some uh. The first cut is hip smooth dub funk style with smooth raping by black thought, lotz of efectkz. 2 is amazing, reggae tastic flava rapping with beans & hawkman, laswell's playing a eastern sitar-ish sound on keyboard and fat dubinz. 3 is hip beat dub style but i dont care for the feamle vocalist imani uzuri he has a verry pop hip hop style but not really my flava but you may love. 4 is the best on the album and the first of the dub tracks wich are extremelly fat and are vocalez, they are pure laswell mixes with extreme dubinz and laswell inspired bass with robbie reggae flavor. 5 is also really good with killa priest and gigi together with a reggae hip hop/dub style it will make you groove killa killz it and gigi is always amazing. 6 iz another cool as beat with not my taste for vocals by woyneab miraf but if you like that itz cool most hip hop fanz will enjoy. 7 the next dub track its more sly & robbie style verry jamaican island-ish really smooth. 8 has britishez electronic singer/profucer tricky, itz dark opening with reggae flava is amazing then commes the reggae raping by radagon and itz reggae/dub flava through. Now if 9 didnt have the vocals that could be another dub track but yet again i not a big vocal fan unless their the best but banging beat. Rytmator dub 10 iz the spice of life, total neo laswell mixing dub style you aint heard nothing yet. 11 features sussan deyhim who is credited for the highly samples vocals from brian eno & david byrne's 79'"the carrier" on the album my life in the bush of ghosts which featured laswell on the album in "america is waiting", in the liner note it lists another singer not sussan and in spiritual beauty album has the track amorphos which credits sussan on the same vocals, their are 6 albums now i have heard these vocals on eno's, orb's live album animals cover, the asian games cd, elixer hegalien zone, tassilli players outer space a cool dub album and the amorphos. but it cant be her everyting ive heard dosent sound like that, but she soundz good on the track and their is much dubbin. then the last song is also the last dub song and it setz you home in the most exquisit way.
Yes its true im not much of a vocal fan but i did still give the album 5 stars. their are only 3 songs with vocals i didnt care for out of 12. But itz good to see sly & robbie doing somethig like this and with laswell who else would have been able to do this. trying to bring the hip hop rap generation into making more music with real live instruments not just all samples. The hip hop world sceems to be loving the reggae style a lot more latelly its a shame this album didnt get a bigger pull here in america, scense this album is only available in america as an import from uk. The only thing i was dissapointed was i have the skiz fernando dubumentary on the new wordsond dvd and they visit laswell in his studio in orange nj, and he what i was asuming was version born they were recording scence the interview was from 2003/04 and that album took a while, and you see sly making a beat on is akai and then flash to the finished beat and robbie is playing the fattest bass to this awesome beat and that is not on here, so i want that track out if you are lisining. you have to be openminder with this one lotz of fusion melding but these guys are professionalz. i world rather this have no vocals and i still loved it so please give this rare gem a real listen and enjoy, much dubbinz

Tropical Storm's coming
I dont know about everybody else but I'm feeling this album. Feel It Boy with Janet Jackson , Bad Girl and Bossman(feat Lady Saw& Sean Paul) are all club bangers that Ive seen cause serious commotion in the club. The Irv Gotti-produced Real Gangsta featuring J1 is also good. Pure Pretty Gal and You Babe are also highlights. Street Life is his apology to his woman for all the wrong he has done her. Skip Material: Fresh From Yard features a weak appearance from Lil Kim and weaker production from DJ Clue(?????). Yagga Yo and Miss L.A.P. dont appeal to me and Party Hard is pretty much filler. Bottom Line: Tropical Storm may not be Beenie Man's best album but its the last solid release from him. Back To Basics stunk and Undisputed........lets not even talk about it! Standout Tracks: FEEL IT BOY, BAD GIRL, REAL GANGSTA, STREET LIFE, PURE PRETTY GAL, BOSSMAN and YOU BABE.
To that batty boy doing all that ranting in futility give it a rest. You're never going to get us to accept your silly views as reality so piss off! Chi Chi boy!!!

Nice compilation for the casual reggae fan
There seem to be a LOT of compilations for this essential reggae band, most of them with good reviews. I have no idea how this one stacks up in comparison, but I can say this: 12 great tracks at less than a buck a track means this is a nice find for the more casual fan who just wants the essentials for a great price.

Plus you get the killer original of "Pressure Drop," best known to Rock fans from The Clash's equally killer cover version.

This whole "Crucial Reggae" series seems to be worth checking out for a nice affordable overview of great Reggae artists. I intend to pick up a few more. There's a CD-ROM bonus track too.

inspired by the spirit of reggae music since early childhood, Christopher Plaza Perreira began playing a variety of keyboards at the age of twelve. His mentors have included the world-renowned jazz pianist Martin Headman, master musician Danjuma Adamu from Nigeria, and his father, bandleader Michael Perreira (aka Ras Aloe). Some of the international artists Christopher has performed with include legendary Jamaican songwriter/vocalist Earl Zero, Ethiopian performer Isaac Haile Selassie, and Paolos and the Habesha from Eritrea. For five years Chris was keyboardist for Danjuma Adamu's West African high-life and Afro-beat touring and recording band Kosono, and also did a stint with the popular Bay Area hip-hop group Triplex. At the age of 23, Christopher has already recorded two cds under his own name. "Don't Worry Mama," released in June 2002 with the help of Danjuma Adamu, is a rich and pungent blend of reggae and West African flavors; his most recent offering, "Mr. President," is a sharp criticism of current politicians and a return to roots reggae. Both albums demonstrate Chris's musical versatility as well as his outstanding songwriting and vocal skills.Always striving for excellence, Chris studied with jazz great Ray Brown and currently lives in Brooklyn, New York.
