TOKYO -- Armed policemen patrol streets on the way to school, education officials draw up safety maps and young students carry alarms to call for help in an emergency.

A spate of grisly crimes targeting schoolchildren has horrified Japan and dealt a serious blow to its image as a safe country for children. The killings - one girl's corpse was stuffed into a box, another victim was stabbed a dozen times in the chest a third also stabbed, allegedly by one of her teachers Saturday - have put authorities on alert and worried parents on edge."

The air fresheners were jointly developed by members of Naniwa Meibutsu Kaihatsu Kenkyukai, a cross-industrial association, headed by Ikuro Noiri, president of Senoya, after an air freshener producer of Nara Prefecture came up with the idea to create a new Osaka brand product

The first available fragrance is "Tenpozan Omoide no Kaori" (memory of Tenpozan). The air freshener attempts to capture the essence of a first date on the sightseeing area's Ferris wheel.

Another fragrance, "Dotonbori Atsugesho no Kaori" (heavily made-up woman in Dotonbori), captures the scent of an overly made-up middle-aged woman sitting next to you in a theater in the entertainment district.

Another, "Kitashinchi, Unaji no Kaori" (the perfumed neck of a Kitashinchi hostess), recreates the scent of a kimono-clad hostess in the Kitashinchi entertainment district.

This broke one of the most sacred laws of the Gion Kobu karyukai, and the geiko was quoted as having contemplated ritual suicide after receiving death threats from other geiko, who believed that Iwasaki-san had broken her vow of silence. She later sued Golden for defamation and breach of confidentiality. The case was settled out of court earlier this year"
By PAUL DALEY, Sun Racing Writer:
Suffolk Race track closes for the 2005 season, but with the simulcast racing bill stalled in the State Legislature for a bundle vote on alternative gaming. Unless a sunset bill is passed, as of January 1, 2006, all 4 MAss. race tracks will be unable to accept wagers. If politics are not resolved, the small race trainer will not be able to keep their horses.

It is estimated by TRF Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation, that as many as 30 horses will be sold for slaughter.

"Canter Organization of New England is specifically earmarking Suffolk horses for adoption. For information go to the Canter website at www.canterusa.org.

"What can we do to help the local horses? For starters, contact the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation at www.trfinc.org. No donation is too small. Or, if you are able to board a horse, the foundation will work with you. If you love the sport and its participants, it's something to think about, especially around the holidays"
