Two items in the Wednesday morning Honolulu Star-Advertiser are worth a look. One is the lead editorial, “Focus on issues not the mud.” The other is the column by David Shapiro, who can be insightful when he’s not forcing himself to try to be funny: “Politicians need to get over the plantation-era bigotry”.

Voter Registration Deadline Looming

Thursday is the deadline for registering to vote in the September 18 primary election. Registration forms are available at satellite city halls, post offices and on line at http://hawaii.gov/elections. Applications must be received or postmarked no later than August 19.

Pau Hana 2.0 is a statewide virtual coffee hour with Neil Abercrombie to take place August 18, 2010, from 7:00 p.m to 8:00 p.m. The event is an opportunity to get together with friends to talk story, hear from Neil live, and encourage each other to vote early. The “virtual coffee hour” will be web-streamed live to locations across the state. We will hear directly from Neil about his vision for Hawaii and why your active participation in this election is so important. Successful Rally in Mililani Mauka; Kahuku Coming Up

The Region 6 rally for Neil Abercrombie at Mililani Mauka Elementary School Wednesday evening was a great success. More than 150 supporters turned out to enjoy some musical entertainment by the duo Robert and Randy and dine on stew and rice (and kimchee) prepared by Charlotte Nekota while waiting for the main course, the candidate himself.

In addition to a spirited presentation of his vision for the future of Hawai’i and the main issues in the gubernatorial campaign, Neil addressed questions from the audience regarding some of the most crucial issues facing the Islands. Master of ceremonies Al Harrington kept the program flowing and on target.

Another opportunity for Region 6 supporters to meet and talk with Neil is coming up on Saturday, July 31, at 6:00 p.m. in the Kahuku High School cafeteria. Chicken hekka is on the menu.

Every campaign in Hawaii relies on volunteer sign wavers to keep the candidate’s visibility high. Region 6 covers a lot of ground–from Waipio Gentry through Wahiawa to the North Shore–and needs lots of volunteers. Don’t make this lonely woman do it all by herself. If you haven’t tried it, you may be surprised how much fun it can be.
