Student seeks certified deaf education program at CMU

2010-06-16T10:42:00.001-07:00

Getting through grade school is tough enough for kids when the student and teachers speak the same language.

But for deaf children who are raised with American Sign Language as their primary language, keeping up with notes, interpretors and regular classroom work bring a whole new set of problems.

Kelly Laatsch would like to help ease that concern for kids who are deaf and hard of hearing. The Freeland senior wants to become a certified deaf educator.

She is deaf herself, with a cochlear implant in her left ear allowing her to discern speech, though she still uses an ASL interpreter in class to be sure she catches everything.

“I’m kind of stuck right now,” Laatsch said.

That is because Central Michigan University doesn’t have a certified deaf education program.

Although she had accounted for this by planning to pick up her master’s at Michigan State University’s prestigious deaf education program, MSU has decided to discontinue the program starting this year.

Students currently enrolled in the program will have until 2013 to complete it.

“(The e-mail back from MSU) said ‘Oh, sorry, we’re closing the program!’” Laatsch said. “Whoa, this is my future!”

The program was closed partially because of budget concerns, a decision that gave rise to public protests from the deaf community.

Harold Johnson, a professor of special education at MSU and co-director of the program, said the more than 40-year-old establishment had a unique role within the country in terms of identifying and implementing innovative enhancements for teaching deaf students.

Creating a similar program at CMU could be possible, he said, but not easy.

“One of the difficulties CMU would have is attracting faculty that would be qualified for the program and able to succeed professionally,” Johnson said.

Laatsch said CMU’s respected programs in education, special education, ASL and audiology all give the school a prime opportunity for a deaf education program.

Renee Papelian, director of Professional Education at CMU, said a marked amount of student interest would be necessary before CMU could begin pursuing such a program.

With enough student support, they could then confer with the Michigan Department of Education in order to ascertain what would be necessary to continue.

“We have to align ourselves with those standards in order for students to be certified in particular areas,” she said.

Unfortunately, Papelian said the current budget crunch in Michigan makes the prospect of adding new programs a particularly laborious one.

Laatsch is remaining optimistic about its future possibilities at CMU.

“I’m sure it’s going to be a long process, but I think it would be really beneficial for students,” she said.

For centuries, a college education meant “going away to school”. It meant ivy-encrusted campuses, dorms and fraternities, and all-nighters at the library cramming for a chemistry test. But recently, prospective students are facing a new kind of college experience – online education. The purpose of this article is to inform students about some of the potential benefits of this new kind of college education in which students take classes and work toward their degrees over the internet.

1. Accessibility

Traditionally, if a student wanted a college education they had to relocate or commute to campus, reduce hours at work, or even postpone careers entirely. But not anymore. Online education offers the same quality education, the same courses, and the same degrees as traditional education but in a more convenient setting. With online education, you can get a college education on your schedule. All you need is a computer and an internet connection and you can go to college in the comfort of your own home.

2. Flexibility

In addition to being more accessible, online education is also more flexible than traditional education, especially for students who work. With online education, you can cater your courses, homework, and school correspondence around your work or family schedule. Study when you want and where you want. The flexibility of an online education allows you the ability to maintain your priorities and your income while still earning a college degree.

3. Work-Ability

Many people fear that starting or finishing their college education will interfere with their existing careers. Traditionally, going to college meant going to school full-time during the day, which made it difficult to work. Not so with online education. By going to school online, you can keep your current job and continue earning the money you need. Online programs allow you to take courses at your own pace, which in turn allows you the flexibility to work full-time or part-time while still maintaining a balance among work, school, and your social life.

4. Applicability

One of the oft-overlooked advantages of working while going to school is the potential applicability that studies may have on your job. In other words, it’s one thing to go to class and learn about something in theory, and it’s another to take that theory and put it into practice. Students who work can apply their newly acquired knowledge immediately to their jobs; they can also focus their studies on the kinds of real-world problems that professionals face daily in the workplace.

5. Speed

The accessibility and flexibility of online education makes it possible to shave months, even years off your graduation date. Motivated students can earn prestigious degrees online in half the time it would have taken in a traditional classroom setting.

6. Variety

One of the great myths regarding online education is that there aren’t enough degrees to choose from. Not true – at least, not anymore. Colleges and universities are now offering scores of degrees in a variety of different areas including business, criminal justice, education, engineering, health care, hospitality, law, liberal arts, science, and web design, to name but a few. Furthermore, within these areas you can obtain associate degrees, bachelors degrees, masters degrees, and other professional degrees in addition to a gamut of certificates and diplomas.

7. Cost

Finally, one of the most dramatic advantages of online education is the cost. Typically, the tuition of online programs is already less expensive than traditional programs. When you add in the potential savings associated with housing, transportation, books, and lost wages, the difference is enormous. Furthermore, if students continue to work while taking classes online, the need for student loans decreases, which greatly eases the financial strain of college after graduation.

Whether you experience college in a brick-and-mortar classroom or a virtual one, your education will be one of the most important investments you will make in your life. So as you prepare for this important decision, make sure you consider all the options, including the unique possibilities offered by online education. Whatever you choose, you are certain to have a genuine “college experience”, including more than a few all-nighters cramming for that chemistry test.

Cyber Stalking Victims are Real People with Real Feelings

2010-06-02T06:13:00.001-07:00

Many people that engage in cyber stalking, do so because they feel the people that they are terrorizing are just names on a computer screen. The truth of the matter is that these individuals are real people with real feelings that are genuinely frightened by experiences such as this. This is why so many people work so hard to stop cyber stalkers from having this type of control over another person. Many times the only time these individuals realize that they are truly scaring or terrorizing someone is if the situation becomes reversed and the stalker themselves become the victim of a stalker.

There are many ways in which cyber stalking victims can fight back against their would-be attackers. One of the best ways to do this is through an internet investigation known as a reverse email trace or a reverse email look-up. This type of internet investigation can uncover many key details which will help to identify individuals which may be cyber stalking another person. Some of the information which may be revealed includes the name, address and phone number of the person, as well as their place of employment, their internet service provider and browser type, the location of the computer which is used, and in some cases even the specific operating system of the computer in question, as well as the websites which the person has visited.

Cyber stalking victims often do not realize that these internet investigations are available and fall prey to the many websites which claim that they can do this instantly and free of charge. Often the only thing that these websites do effectively is obtain information that will often make it even easier for them to become victims of cyber stalkers. The information that these website reveals is often inaccurate or unusable for whatever reason.

If you have fallen victim to someone who has chosen you as a cyber stalking victim, the first thing you should do is turn to a well trained and highly skilled internet investigator. These investigators have the necessary experience in this area to conduct a reverse email trace or reverse email look-up safely, effectively and in a timely manner. In addition to this, the information that is found is much more likely to be accurate and provide you with what is necessary to put a stop to this type of harassment. These investigations are usually performed within two weeks or less in most cases.

Why It Is Important To Stop Individuals Suspected Of Cyber Stalking

2010-06-02T06:12:00.001-07:00

There are many reasons why it is important to identify and stop individuals who may be suspected of cyber stalking. The most obvious reason is the fact that the person who is on the receiving end of this type of harassment is most likely terrified by the events which are taking place. Cyber stalkers are all over the Internet and in many cases this terrorism often escalates into real life violence. No one should ever be so frightened by someone that they feel that they cannot report these occurrences and take the necessary precautions to protect themselves and stop this type of online abuse.

There are a variety of internet investigations which may lead to the identification and possible location and prosecution of individuals who engage in the activity of cyber stalking. The most popular of these online investigations include the use of a reverse email look-up. This particular investigation can uncover many pertinent details which are necessary to identify these sometimes dangerous individuals. Some of the information which may be obtained often includes the name, address and phone number of the individual, as well as where the computer is located which sent the unwanted and often threatening communication. Other information which may be discovered includes the person's place of employment, the internet service provider and browser type, and even the websites that the person has visited.

There are many websites which claim to be able to provide this information instantly free of charge, however many of these websites are largely ineffective and do not provide results that are very accurate. A reverse email look-up is by far the most reliable and most effective method of identifying individuals who may be cyber stalking an individual. In addition to this the investigators who conduct this type of investigation usually employ a no hit no fee policy. Basically what this means is that if the investigation does not result in the identification of the alleged perpetrator, then there is no charge for the investigation. You only pay if the information obtained actually leads to the identification of the person in question.

When you hire a trained and skilled professional investigator with the proper experience in the field, you are giving yourself the best possible chance of getting the necessary information to identify the person who may be cyber stalking you. This investigation may be performed within a time frame of anywhere from as little as one day to two weeks. You will then be provided with a detailed report of whatever information is discovered.
