For many summers, locals and visitors alike have flocked to Funland, the popular amusement park on the Rehoboth Beach Boardwalk, for games, rides, and naturally, fun. The Rehoboth Beach Museum is now celebrating Funland’s 50th year in business with a display of photographs in the museum’s main corridor. The snapshots illustrate the fascinating history of the popular destination, which was originally an amusement park called the Sport Center before it was bought by the Fasnacht family in 1961. After refurbishing the building and rides in the aftermath of the devastating Storm of 1962, the Fasnachts opened Funland to the public, and since then, it has become one of the city’s treasured pastimes.

In addition to the photographs of Funland in the museum, the main gallery includes displays on the history of the City of Rehoboth Beach. They tell the story of decades of having fun in the sun, from arcade games to fancy hotels. The museum’s exhibit “Skimming the Surface,” a display of vintage surf and skimboards, continues through March 2012.

The Rehoboth Beach Museum is the home of the Rehoboth Beach Historical Society. The Society’s mission is to preserve and showcase artifacts that illustrate the development of the community. Society members receive free museum admission, newsletters, free admission to lectures and other activities, and notice of ticketed events.

The museum is located at 511 Rehoboth Avenue. Winter museum hours are Monday, Thursday and Friday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Regular admission is $5 for adults; $3 for seniors, college students and military; $2 for children ages 13-17. Members and children 12 and under are free. Memberships are available. Please call 227-7310 for information.

We just got this nice note from Drew at The Bellmoor in Rehoboth – doors are about to re-open! What a relief.

Dear Nancy, Thanks for your thoughts during the recent huricane. All are safe and well and we hope you are safe too. There was no damage to The Bellmoor or to Rehoboth. The beach is still here and forecasts are good for Monday. We will be open for business starting this afternoon. Drive carefully. Drew

These are not your daddy’s park cottages. All with wide water views, screened porches, and gas fireplaces, the cottages at Indian River Marina are charming, and cheap (relatively speaking, considering the location). The high-season rate (minimum one week) is $1800, and the tariff drops to as low as $140/night (2 night minimum) or $853/week in winter season.

Each cottage sleeps six in two bedrooms and a loft (queen bed, two twins, and a queen in the semi-private loft).

Great for families or friends who don’t need to be in the center of the action, the cottages are 8 miles south of Rehoboth in Delaware Seashore State Park on the north side of Indian River Inlet.

No doubt you’ve seen Dogfish Head brews in your grocery store? Well, Rehoboth is where it all started, back in 1995, with the opening of Delaware’s first brewpub.

Now brewing 20 different styles of beer – including some very esoteric offerings (Palo Santo Marron aged in Paraguayan wood tanks, anyone?) – Dogfish Head is a true local success story, selling in more than 25 states.

The Rehoboth Avenue brewpub is a nice, comfy spot for a beer and a burger. Dark wood dominates the interior, with wood booths lining one wall and a long bar covering the other. The booths, the bar, and all the tables in between are usually packed with music-loving beer drinkers starting at 10:00 pm on most Fridays and Saturdays. If you go, pick your spot carefully if you’re thinking of having a chat with tablemates; the stage is small but the band members can be many, and loud.

Try the excellent woodgrilled pizzas (try the Canary for One, with chicken, caramelized onions, roasted red pepper & scallions), or the burgers and sandwiches, like the Olde School Salmon Sandwich served on a grilled baguette with bleu cheese, roasted garlic aioli and marinated red-onion salad.

Kids choose from five meals for $6, including drink and dessert.

Wine drinkers: don’t expect a whole lot. This is a brew-centric establishment. Happy hours Monday-Friday from 3-6 gets you $1 off house-distilled spirits, select pints, and appetizers.

DFH fans will be interested in the free tours of the Milton, DE brewery (yes, samples!) Tuesday – Saturday afternoons. Make reservations online.

Or take a free tour of the Rehoboth experimental brewery where Brewpub Exclusive beers are created. Just show up at the DFH Brewing and Eats at 4:30 on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday.

Or if you live in Virginia, you can find Dogfish Head Ale Houses in Fairfax and Falls Church, and Marylanders have one, too, in Gaithersburg.

Price: Pizzas $10-13, sandwiches $7-11, entrees $16–23
Open: Open every day at 12:00. Live music starting at 10:00 on Fridays and Saturdays.
Phone: 302-226-2739
Address: 320 Rehoboth Avenue, Rehoboth Beach

This is a really special place for kids (and adults) and, amazingly, right in the middle of downtown. As landlords continue to raise the rents on the Avenue, more and more of these local charmers move away, but Creatable Crafts keeps the door open for crafty kids to paint a piece of pottery, string a bead bracelet, or go nuts and mosaic an entire table.

Pottery is fired overnight for pickup the next day. No reservations needed, just drop in.

When’s the last time you picked up a paintbrush for fun?

Price: Costs are $8/hr per person for studio time plus the cost of the item painted or other materials. Costs include firing and finishing the pottery.
Open: Year round. Daily in season. Call ahead for hours in off season.

There’s only so much space in an SUV headed toward the beach, what with the towels and floaties and banana bikes and tiki torches. No room for food? Concierge by the Sea can help, with their Stock Your Beach House service.

They can also hook you up with necessities like crib and linen rentals, activities like tee times, bike rentals, kayak outings, plus luxuries like spa appointments.

Need something a little more challenging? Give them a try – they’re the experts.

“Stock Your Beach House” is the most popular service in the summer. This service can be as simple or as elaborate as the client would like. Some clients just want groceries and/or linens/beach equipment delivered, others choose to add on the “Personal Touch” Service where Concierge by the Sea makes all the beds and set out the towels. For pricing on linens and equipment, click here, or click the “Request for Service” button on the website. The fee for grocery service is 30% of the total bill plus $25.

Concierge by the Sea strongly recommends reservations made at least 72 hours in advance for most services.

Open: Monday through Friday 9am-5pm. Saturdays are reserved service only. Closed December 1 – January 15th.
Phone: 877-302-BEACH or email
Location: Concierge by the Sea serves Lewes, Rehoboth, and Ocean City.

See more lodging, dining and activity recommendations in the Rehoboth in My Pocket app for iPhone and iPad, just $3.99 in the iTunes store.

Here at Rehoboth in My Pocket, we’re all about beach, food, fun, and fireworks!

Living life to the fullest! Celebration!

So, in celebration of July 4 weekend at the beach, we’re lowering the price of our app – the Rehoboth in My Pocket travel guide for iPhone and iPad – to just 99 cents!

Here’s the scoop: One day only, on Wednesday, June 29, download the Rehoboth in My Pocket app for only 99 cents! (A 75% savings over the usual $3.99 price!) *Important note: Buy the app early in the day – Apple resets the price rather randomly, so no guarantees the price stays at $.99 until midnight. Just sayin’.

Buy apps for your beach-loving friends and your vacation-loving parents (just choose “Gift this App” when you buy it, and enter your friends’ email address!).

Then, head out to Rehoboth and raise a ruckus. And don’t miss the Rehoboth fireworks on July 4!

Here’s what’s new in the app:
✔ All entries updated for 2011!
✔ New categories, including Events, Hidden Gems, Eating Out-Outside!, Pet Friendly, and Open Year Round!
✔ 35 new entries, including handy lists for vacationers – such as Grocery Stores and Beer/Wine/Liquor Stores – plus dozens of events in Rehoboth, Lewes, and Dewey Beach
✔ More internal and external links to help you find what you need
✔ 160 pages and 700+ photos!

Great feel.

Time was, Rehoboth Avenue west of Christian Street was a bit of a wasteland. Nameless Chinese restaurants, tattoo parlors, and nail salons took the less-valuable real estate, and the crowds gravitated east. But that’s changed now, with more and more restaurants popping up to keep Dogfish Head Brewing & Eats company, and the Hotel Rehoboth opening directly across from the Jack Lingo Realtors mega-building on Christian Street.

So the Crosswinds Motel, though four blocks (about a 15 minute walk) from the beach, now finds itself much more centrally-located, and with the fabulous Cultured Pearl restaurant (and Starbucks) right across the street.

With summer rates of $90 – $255 (and second-season rates running $50 – $90), Crosswinds is a good value, and gets great reviews, too. Recently renovated, the clean rooms include flat screen TVs, coffee makers, and mini fridges. What else do you need?

Price: $90 – $255/night summer; $50 – $90/night off season

Most people think the Cape May-Lewes Ferry is just about carrying passengers between the two lovely towns on either side of the Delaware Bay. If you’ve ever spent time in Lewes or Cape May, you know those destinations have plenty to keep visitors happy. But the smart people who operate the Ferry have now created an innovative series of tours and events, transforming the transport vessels from simple ferries into value-added entertainment venues. Or, you can just walk on and take the Ferry’s shuttle into town on either side.

The ferry operates year round, and has space for 100 cars ($64 round trip in summer, $52 off-season).

On the Cape May side, shuttles connect the terminal and downtown Cape May. On the Lewes side, shuttles loop from the terminal to Lewes, Tanger Outlets, and the Park and Ride lot where you may connect with the bus system to go to Rehoboth Beach or Ocean City, MD.

Foot Passenger with Return-Trip Value Fare

Children, ages 5 and under FREE
Children, ages 6 to 13 $9
Children, ages 6 to 13 w/shuttle $13

Behind the faded orange canopy of the Crystal Restaurant lies the second-best breakfast in Rehoboth. (Okay, since the first-best – Royal Treat – is only open in-season, maybe we can upgrade Crystal to best-year-round breakfast.) Delaware Today magazine readers have voted Crystal Best Breakfast, too.

Not best as in Ritz Carlton Sunday Brunch (though I guess the orange canopy gives that away). Best as in dependably good food served by fast-moving but polite people.

Here’s what I mean: my group of 12 wandered in at 11:00 am on Polar Bear Plunge Sunday (aka Super Bowl Sunday), just 60 minutes before the event was due to start. The Crystal staff magically shoehorned us into several tables at the back, patiently scribbled as our pre-teens hemmed and hawed over life-changing choices like chocolate milk vs Sprite, then delivered our 50 items within 15 minutes, and sent us back out into the cold with plenty of time to spare. Now I’m not saying they can deliver that every time – or on July 4th weekend – but Crystal is a lean, mean, breakfast machine.

Favorites: home fries (the best in town), huge stuffed omelets (try the shrimp and crabmeat), French toast.

Get there early on weekends; the secret’s been out for a long, long time.

Hello, Romance

Eden is a shoe-in for any restaurant competition that includes a “most romantic” category, and there is certainly romance to be had here.

Food, also, is a standout. The menu changes constantly, so it’s hard to make recommendations, though there’s usually a little of everything, from chicken to veal to scallops to tuna. The Grilled Caesar Salad is a regular, with sun dried tomato/olive tapenade for $9, as is the Mac n Cheese pasta with goat cheese, parmesan reggiano, grilled chicken, spinach and roasted peppers ($25). Both are excellent, and we’ve tried to duplicate the grilled Caesar at home, but I can tell you it’s harder than it seems.

Entrees are pricey – this is the second most expensive restaurant in Rehoboth on average – and portion sizes are a third to half of what most restaurants are piling onto our plaste these days. (That’s actually a relief.) At Eden, it’s all about the quality, the presentation, and the service. If you’re looking for a simple steak or a sub-$15 pasta, this isn’t the spot.

A couple of deals to watch for include a three-course $35 prix fixe menu on Wednesdays (year round), with a half price bottle of wine in the off-season. January through May, every Friday is Classic Night. Signature Eden dishes are discounted 50%, including Grilled Caesar salad, wedge salad, pork polpettes, organic chicken breast, wasabi/sesame ahi tun, and the Eden mac-n-cheese pasta.

If you don’t mind dining in the (cozy & friendly) bar, you can eat well for less. Bar food menu items might include open-faced meatball sandwiches with a salad of mint, pecorino and olive oil salad ($8) or a braised short rib manwich with house pickles (also $8). You can also get selected $5 glasses of wine at the bar; recent entries included a Ferrari Carano fume blanc and a Granacha de Fuego granache.

The wine list includes a wide selection of styles and prices. Whites have ranged from a $22 Chateau St. Michelle Gewurztraminer to a $120 Kistler “Les Noisetiers” chardonnay from the Sonoma coast. Some nice albarinos and verdejos are on offer, as well.

Reds have ranged from several $24 offerings, such as a Bogle Petite Sirah, to a delirious $494 for a Blankiet Paradise Hills Vineyard from Napa. A number of affordable and tasty malbecs are offered, too.

Use OpenTable.com to make online reservations, or call.

Bar menu $8 – $15.
Just two blocks from the beach and two blocks from Rehoboth Avenue, this is truly a park it and forget it kind of place.

There’s a big front porch with white rattan couches and rockers, a complimentary gentle yoga class led by the innkeeper (a certified teacher), breakfast (included) with a special hot entrée and hot and cold buffet each day. Gluten-free, vegetarian and other special diets are welcomed. And, in the evening, warm homemade cookies.

From mid-September through mid-May, Innkeeper Sharon invites individuals or small groups to book the inn for silent or directed spiritual retreats.

Ooohhhhmmmmmm.

Still not convinced?

The garlic bread is great, and the salads that come as part of the entrees are fresh and dressed with a classic Italian (ask for it on the side) and a little cup of blue cheese. The linguine with white clam sauce is redolent of garlic and tasty, and sausage and peppers are nice. Though entrees will not win any innovation awards, it’s a relief to have entrees under $20, pastas for $10, and kids meals for $6 in downtown Rehoboth. (Adriatico also promotes a “Home of the $1 Kids Pasta” special, everyday 4:30-6:00pm.)

Call or stop by for reservations.

Here’s a great testimonial I just came across on Trip Advisor…

Friends of mine and I were in Rehoboth for a few days over Easter this year and read about the piano bar Sundays at the Seafood Shack. What a friendly and welcoming atmosphere! Not only were the drinks good, service was prompt and the customers friendly! John Flynn at the piano added immensely to our night playing great fun songs that really got the crowd up! I would definitely put this place on my ‘to do’ list for a Sunday night extravaganza! Keep up the great work Seafood Shack! (note: we didn’t try the food, but those eating did seem to be enjoying it.)

Piano bar Sundays from 7-10:30, featuring $12.75 dinner special. Live entertainment also on Fridays & Saturdays from 8:30 – midnight.

Seafood Shack offers outdoor patio dining. Pets welcome on the back patio.

If you spend your vacation mornings wandering, coffee in hand, along the shady lanes of the Henlopen Acres neighborhood, just a few blocks north of Rehoboth Avenue (and you should), you’ll eventually walk past the Rehoboth Art League compound, and you’ll ask yourself, what the heck is that?

The three-acre campus is home for local artists and art-appreciators, with a permanent collection housed in the Homestead, an 18th Century farmhouse, as well as special exhibits, classes, lectures and special events.

The growing collection of more than 400 paintings, drawings, sculptures, and photographs showcases pieces by contemporary artists as well as some renowned Delaware artists including Howard Pyle, Ethel P.B. Leach and Howard Schroeder.

In April, children’s art stars in the Young at Art exhibit at the Art League. In July, the League hosts the Rehoboth Beach Cottage Tour. And if you’re in town in August, be sure to go by for the Outdoor Fine Art and Craft Exhibit, featuring more than 100 artists and craftspeople.

Check the website for the complete schedule of classes and events, including ceramics, pottery, yoga, photography, painting, quilting and more.
