HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME!

Is it any wonder why I love my little girl so much? This picture was taken the night we celebrated my 37th birthday. She is such a little sweetheart and is the 'apple of my eye'! She brings so much joy to Jennie and me...with that smile, how couldn't she.

Three days after my birthday, we closed on the new house at 73 Heiskell Avenue in Wheeling. Jenn has a terrific update on her blog on our move to Wheeling. Jenn's blog: http://www.wvu-mama.blogspot.com

Our family is back together (definitely a lot more than we were the 1st six months since I took the West Liberty job)...Elizabeth has started day care, Jenn is in Morgantown two or three days a week, but we're together as a family a lot more and now have a house that was only a dream for us before pulling up tent stakes and making a new life for ourselves in the northern panhandle. Things at West Liberty are much busier during the summer months than I expected they would be...we've always got the 'next thing to do' to build our television station into what we want it to be....football season is just around the corner and soon we'll be broadcasting our games (combination of live & tape delay) to over 100,000 cable homes...it's exciting. Plus, our home games will look great on TV thanks to the beautiful new playing surface at West Liberty's football field...check it out: http://www.hilltoppersports.com

I'll be posting some new photos of our home now that it is 'lived in' by us. Expect that here soon...but, I wanted to send an update.

A New Home for the Amos Family in Wheeling!

We have exciting news from Jenn, Elizabeth and me...plus, when considering my mother's penchant for e-mail newsletters, my DNA is guiding me to send you a note and revive my old blog with a family update (its only been since January of 2007 since I last posted to it)!

After I had casually looked around the Wheeling market for the last four months (and hadn't found anything that really excited us), we found a home that we absolutely loved the first day Jenn and I toured houses together! Our offer on that wonderful home at 73 Heiskell Avenue in the heart of the Woodsdale area of Wheeling was accepted yesterday afternoon! We had to move on it quickly to get it and it is much more than we imagined we would find!

The house was built in 1915 (Jenn especially loves the architecture of older homes), 2,500+ square feet - all above grade, 1,200 unfinished square feet in a very functional (and dry) basement! Beautiful main level living room, dining room, family room, and huge kitchen; and in the upstairs: three bedrooms, beautifully remodeled bathroom, and a separate attic office!

If everything goes as planned, we'll have possession of the house late June!

An update on our move: Things are terrific at West Liberty State College (soon to be University). The West Liberty campus community has been extremely welcoming to us and my boss, President Robin Capehart, is terrific to work for. I feel like I've found the place I'm supposed to be - the opportunity at WLSC has been even better than what I expected it would be. For those of you that haven't seen it, the Media Arts Center where I work is truly phenomenal.

Thanks to people like the Capeharts, Dr. McCullough, the Minches, the Gretchens, the Watsons, the Huffmans, the Ulloms, the Crutchfields, the Baronaks, and the Clarks who have been so good to us in helping us make it home up here. Looks like my new friends at West Liberty are stuck with me now :)

For Jenn, AACE has agreed to her telecommuting with occasional trips to Morgantown, which we're equally thrilled about, so we'll be settled in up here over the summer...we're looking forward to not living out of two places anymore...anyone need a house in Fairmont? I've already got the traditional offer by one friend "to be the first to spill beer on your floor" in Wheeling...please plan to be the 2nd, the 3rd and so on...Come see us, our spot in Woodsdale will be less than 4 miles from Oglebay resort...and we've got plenty of room!

The Wheeling Intelligencer recently completed a four part series about what is currently being dubbed "The Exciting Era" of West Liberty State College Athletics.

It was very flattering to have my addition at West Liberty and our WLTV-14 Television broadcasts featured as one of the articles in the series.

At left is the picture from the article, here I am with my new broadcast partner for women's basketball - WVIAC '25 at 25' honoree and WLSC All-American Ashlea Bland-Minch. She's a lot of fun to work with.

Statewide Sportsline Comments on Reid's move to WLSC

Reid Amos resigns as FSU broadcaster, golf coach

FAIRMONT - Fairmont State University athletics will have a new voice in the future.
Veteran FSU broadcaster Reid Amos called his final game for the Falcons Saturday evening at the Joe Retton Arena - an 84-77 Fairmont State loss to Clarion (Pa.) University.

Amos, who also served as the Falcons' men's golf coach and as a part-time faculty member in FSU's School of Fine Arts, announced this weekend that he is leaving Fairmont State to take a position at West Liberty State College near Wheeling.

Amos will be announced this week as the new Director of Media Operations at West Liberty. In addition, he will also become the new sports broadcaster for the Hilltoppers and, for now, the school's assistant men's golf coach.

"I don't think it's any secret that I have wanted a career in higher education and I've worked very hard to expand my education, experience and knowledge so that hopefully one day I could work in higher education and my hope was that it would be for my alma mater," said Amos.

"That has not happened, but you know what they say when one door closes, another opens and one has certainly opened for me at West Liberty State. It's a phenomenal opportunity.

"I'm going to be the Director of Media Operations, an administrative level opportunity working under new president and West Virginia native Robin Capehart at West Liberty. My main job will be to run the operations of the brand new $6 million dollar Media Arts Center. It's a facility, I truly believe, that will become the cornerstone to the best media education in West Virginia. In addition, I'll become the 'Voice of the Hilltoppers' with every home game live on TV to 40,000 cable homes and road games on radio."

Amos, a Fairmont native and graduate of Fairmont Senior High School, Fairmont State and West Virginia University, has been broadcasting FSU football and men's basketball games for the past 15 seasons.

"It's been very special for me," said Amos. "Particularly special was the period from 1993 to 2001. After the golden era of Fairmont State athletics under Joe Retton and Deacon Duvall in the 1960s and 70s Fairmont State was beginning to return to national prominence in the 1990s and in 2000 - in 2001 then that derailed.

"It's been very painful for those of us close to this program to see it do so. With all of the budget cuts and whatnot it's been very difficult for the football program and men's basketball program to compete at the conference level let alone the national level. Had it not been for alums like Rusty Elliott and Tim Murphy, prideful men who cared a great deal about their programs, who knows how far it could have fallen. Quite frankly Fairmont State should be pursuing excellence, not just competing."

As Fairmont's men's golf coach, Amos built the Falcons into a traditional power in both the West Virginia Conference and the East Region in just five short years. FSU has claimed two of the last three league titles under his direction, including one this fall which qualified the team for its fourth straight NCAA Division II Super Regional Tournament.

The Falcons won the NCAA D-II East Regional Championship for the first time in school history this past spring and qualified for the NCAA Championship Finals where they finished 18th in the nation.

Amos, who has led FSU to 10 tournament wins during his tenure, was twice named the West Virginia Conference's Golf Coach of the Year and this past spring was honored by being selected as the Ping/GCAA East Region Coach of the Year.

"I was fortunate to have a special group of young men on the golf team led by Jon Burnside and Tyler Franklin," said Amos. "Their first tournament was my first tournament as a head coach. The three of us essentially made a pact. We decided in the four years they were going to be in the program we were going to compete for a regional title. A lot of teams talk about that, but we were focused on that as one of our main goals.

"We won a regional championship when those two were seniors in their next-to-last college event and in their last college tournament we played in the national tournament. When Jon Burnside walked off after the 72nd hole at the NCAA nationals he said to me ‘Thank you coach I accomplished every goal I had in college golf.' For me that was more satisfying than any coach of the year award I could have received.

"To watch the guys have the successes of what's now two conference championships, a regional championship and a national tournament experience it's been nothing short of special. It all came as a result of hard work by our program."

Amos, who is married to the former Jennie Cunningham and has one daughter Elizabeth, will officially begin his position at West Liberty in January.

For those fans who have followed Fairmont State athletics on the radio over the years, it won't seem the same without Reid Amos, whose career as "Voice of the Falcons" came to a rather surprising end last night with his broadcast of the FSUClarion basketball game.

Reid followed the late Frank Lee in that role and says he always hoped he would be on the job at least one year longer than Frank, who, sadly enough, was covering Fairmont State games almost up to the time of his death from cancer in the early '90s. Reid was in his 15th season as the FSU "voice" when his local career came to a close last night. (Frank, incidentally, covered Fairmont State athletics for 47 years.) It was no secret that Reid has been attempting to hook on with his alma mater for a number of years - on a full-time basis rather than part-time status.

He's a graduate of Fairmont State and holds a master's degree in communication studies from West Virginia University. His name is synonymous with Fairmont State.

But for whatever reason, that never happened.

So the young man most closely association with Fairmont State athletics has broken his ties here and will begin soon as director of media operations at West Liberty University in the Northern Panhandle.

It's surprising enough that Reid is leaving Fairmont State, but among his duties at West Liberty will be to continue his broadcasting career as the "Voice of the Hilltoppers."

It's difficult to imagine Reid supporting any West Virginia Conference team except the Maroon and White of Fairmont State. We're certain that Reid's blood has a maroon tint to it.

Reid Amos truly loved Fairmont State athletics. His closeness with his alma mater was obvious with every broadcast of Fighting Falcon football and basketball teams over the last 15 years.

His closeness with the coaches and players was well-known.

He once told us that some of the Falcon players he has covered on the gridiron or hardwood have become good friends. Falcon fans knew he was covering "their" team, and that's what they enjoyed.

Reid spoke of the wonderful opportunity he was receiving at West Liberty and how much better it would make life for him and his family - Jennie and little Carol Elizabeth, who will soon be 2 years old.

For all that he has done to publicize Fairmont State, it's a shame that "wonderful opportunity" couldn't have come in his own home town where he has already built up quite a name for himself.

A first holiday season with our little girl Elizabeth! It was terrific!

A wonderful 39th anniversary on December 23rd with Mom & Dad and Christmas Eve and Christmas morning in Fairmont...

Elizabeth got lots of clothes, got some nifty new toys (though mom was concerned she didn't have enough toys for Locust Avenue)...all the excitement was a lot for a little girl in one morning!

Then off to Webster Springs for Christmas with the Cunningham's and Morton's! The mid-morning nap had Elizabeth ready to go for another gift-fest!

A few days in Webster and then back to Fairmont as Jennie had her most days off since Elizabeth was born to enjoy the holidays. Most of that time, though, was spent getting ready for our New Year's get-together while Daddy was broadcasting a couple of games down in Glenville (Including a win over #11 Pfeiffer for Coach Murphy's Falcons!)

Then New Years! A fabulous New Year's Eve where this little modeling shot was snagged! Jenn has already sent to Elizabeth's agent!

A nice gathering on New Year's, though as always we couldn't be surrounded by all of our friends, it was a wonderful party and a full-house we had...Come to think of it, we need a bigger house!

New Year's Day, the Amoses and the Joneses rooted WVU to victory over Georgia Tech, 38-35...what a game...Elizabeth and new buddy Hayden Jones hung out and seemed more excited about their Christmas bounties than the game...and why not?

Welcome to Reid's New Blog!

Hi everyone, my friends Will and Adam have begun to get me hooked on blogging, so before getting 'strung out on blogging', I decided to create one of my own to keep friends and family up to date on what's going on in my world....and hopefully start some healthy and/or humorous debate from time to time...

So, the middle of the night when I can't sleep and thankfully my little girl can seems like a good time to start my new blog!

On top of that, it is an opportunity to share pictures of my beautiful little girl - Elizabeth!...I'll try to keep everyone up to date on what's going on...Plus, it gives me a place to rant and get feedback from everyone!

This pic is my favorite of Elizabeth so far...five months ago (when she was 6 months old)...Elizabeth's Mommy (Jenn) took this picture with a low end digital camera...amazing she got this shot of E! Me thinks Mommy needs a new camera for XMAS - Imagine the pix she could get! We'll see if Santa thinks Mommy has been good! Elizabeth has definitely been good.
