I loved watching the Blazers play last year. For the first time in 10 years, they were guys that I could point to as good role models for my children. they looked like they were having fun. And by having fun, they were winning. The 07-08 squad nearly DOUBLED (41-41) the 05-06 record (21-61). I’ve mentioned before there is a tangible feeling of near euphoria in Blazer Nation than can be summed up in the 2008-09 starters. That euphoria comes from remembering how great the guys were last year, and knowing that Greg Oden will be at the center of Brandon Roy, LaMarcus Aldridge, Martell Webter and Rudy Fernandez this year!

This past Monday, the Rose City was the site of a rock stars’ welcome. Rudy Fernandez was acquired on Draft Day from the Phoenix Suns. You can read about the arrival and see a video on The Rip City Project.

My favorite quote… “Maybe I help the team to the playoffs,” or

“. . . when asked what he thought about playing against Kobe and the rest of team USA, [Rudy]  said through his translator, “The first thought is respect, the second thought is I’m going to kick their ass.”

The season opens on October 7th with a pre-season game at The Garden against Sacremento. The regular season starts against the Hated Lakers at the Staples Center on October 28th, with the home opener on the 30th with the Spurs.

I plan to get over to a couple games this year, I cannot wait to hear the crowd chanting RUDY, RUDY, RUDY!

Remember when ESPN… everyone really, said that the OSU win over USC in 2006 was a ‘fluke’?

USC 38, Oregon State 7The Trojans lost in their previous trip up to Corvallis in 2006, but this OSU defense is too green to hang with USC. Look for the Trojans to dominate on both lines and for their secondary to force some turnovers. USC’s skill talent should hit big plays just as Penn State did against the Beavers.

Remember when one Vegas sportsbook said the Beavers are 25 point underdogs and…

Oregon State really has no chance to win this game.

Before you guys go all ‘oooh’ and ‘ahhh’ at the numbers below: I gotta tell you that I have had a pretty stressful week. Basically, LOTS of $hit (Charles & Rick understand).

I tracked most of my days, that is before my Palm was lost/stolen, so its back to the paper trackers for a while. I made it to the gym 3 times, as well as 3 football games and 1 volleyball game. Plus I did some shopping for school; $500 worth of textbooks… for ONE term, plus another $500 for the Dell laptop I ordered today. Then there is the OTHER stuff…  The upshot, I didn’t eat much on some days. One of the days I tracked had me using 12 of my 37 points.

I start classes on Monday at 9am – 9pm and Tuesday 8am – Noon; 14 credits including practicum. I am hoping to get in some time at the University weight room as well as keeping the convenience food in check. Stay tuned for the Week 1 assessment.

I had a GREAT WEEKEND!

Although I didn’t track everything, including the dinner of a Bella Turkey Burger with fries and a trip through the salad bar from Ruby Tuesday. I would like the record to show that The Boy ate MOST of my fries, as well as his Triple Prime Bacon Cheddar Burger. Yes he’s a PIT, he’s an 11 year-old boy who plays football.

Basically, I was feeling good about weigh-in this week.

The Boy, a friend of his and I set out for Corvallis last Saturday morning to take in the Oregon State v. Hawaii game at Reser Stadium. Normally, we don’t get to a game until later October or November because September is just so crazy around here. But we wanted a special treat…

to see a game that wasn’t cold, wet or COLD. We were rewarded in spades!

HT to With Leather

Once upon a time, my FAVORITE teams were all long-suffering. I didn’t intend it that way, it just happened. For a while I thought it gave me character to say that I had been a fan of Team X for a number of years. Generally Team X hadn’t had a sniff of the playoffs since before I was born.

• Chicago Cubs – History’s longest hapless streak. If they don’t make it to the World Series this fall, the Northsiders will have racked up 100 seasons without a ring.
• Seattle Mariners – They had a couple GOOD seasons recently, but 2008 gives the Mariner fans a little reminder of those pathetic seasons in the Kingdome when you could watch the game with a couple hundred of your closest friends.
• Portland Trailblazers – This one isn’t as ‘character-building’ as one might think. They’ve been to the BIG DANCE three times, winning the Finals once. It has been the last 10 years that has really tested the Rip City fans. The long nightmare might be over with the giddy hopefulness fans have for the 2008-09 season.
• Oregon State Beavers – this one, oh man! The Beavs have put together quite a run of winning seasons since 2000. But MOST of Beaver Nation remembers the 1-10 seasons, the 27 consecutive losing seasons, the 0-0 tie in the Civil War. My favorite memory is being able to walk into Parker Stadium without tickets after the game started to watch the Beavs get annihilated by the Trojans. Not only could you walk in, you got a front-row seat in the aluminum bleachers that used to sit where the awe inspiring Eastside of the stadium has risen at Reser Stadium. • Seattle Seahawks – Again, this team always seems to be on the edge of pathetic. They play in the weak-sauce NFC West, so those NFC West Champion banners should be taken with a grain of salt.

You can imagine my unmatched JOY in 2005 when the Hawks worked their way through the playoffs, winning a spot in Superbowl Xtra Large! And, oh God! They were going to play the former Steel Curtain, the team I loved in my youth.

Traditionally, I host a Big Party for the BIG Game. Superbowl XL was Xtra Special. The house was decked out in Navy & Lime Green. There was one poor pathetic Steelers fan invited just so we could have an object of ridicule. It didn’t turn out that way and that Steeler fan still has an air of smugness that hasn’t yet been beat out of him. If you are a Seattle fan, the anger you have over THAT game is comparable to the fury of 1,000 suns. If you are a Steelers fan… Shut the HELL up! The Ref’s called a BAD game and YOU KNOW IT!

All of that leads up to Gov. Sarah Palin (R-AK). The Pittsburgh Tribune-Review had this to say:

She relishes moose burgers because “they taste better than beef with no chemicals, steroids or hormones.” She adopted the Pittsburgh Steelers because of the team’s success in the 1970s and because there are no major professional teams in her state.

OK, I can deal with that. Those are valid reasons to choose a non-regional team as ‘your team’. But, there is also this interesting tidbit in Sports Northwest:

We might finally get to the bottom of the Super Bowl XL conspiracy if John McCain wins the presidency. VP candidate Sarah Palin is a Seahawks fan.
And not just a casual Seahawks fan, folks–Palin’s a member of the Seahawkers, the team’s official fan club.

OK John, stay calm… you don’t want another Secret Service investigation (interesting story)…
