Our Somali coffee mornings are run by a trained facilitator and a Somalian volunteer. They take place once a month on a Tuesday from 10.30-12pm and provide an opportunity for Somalian parents to get together and talk about any worries or concerns they may have especially if they have a child diagnosed with ADHD or Autism.

We will be theming the coffee mornings over the next few months to include adolescent stages of development, anger, what our charity does and why .

New Research into LGBT Relationships

- Give your view

Researchers at Sunderland and Leicester Universities are conducting research into LGBT relationships and they invite you to take part in their online survey about same-sex, bi and/or trans relationships.

The research aims to understand what you do when things go wrong in your same-sex, bi and/or trans relationships. Recent Equality legislation requires that services respond appropriately to those in LGBT relationships who might need help or advice. The researchers believe that the best way to ensure this, is to ask about your experiences and what you need, so that they can feed that back to them. The survey is being launched today, Wednesday 1st May 2013 and can be accessed by following one of the links below:

To take part in the survey please click here or click on the logo alternatively, the survey can be found at: http://lgbtrelationshipsresearch.limequery.com

Please note: These links will take you to the survey launch page which includes the administrator contact email if you have any problems accessing the survey. Above the admin’ email address you will see the survey link: “LGBT Relationships Research” – which you will need to click on to begin the survey.

Don’t forget to click the ‘Submit Form’ button at the end of the questionnaire.

Please complete the survey before 31st August 2013.

Ofsted reports that personal, social, health and economic education in schools is not yet good enough.

Some of the Key findings

Overall, learning in PSHE education in England was good or better in 60% of schools and required improvement or was inadequate in 40%.

Sex and relationships education required improvement in over a third of schools.

In secondary schools too much emphasis was placed on ‘the mechanics’ of reproduction and too little on relationships. Lack of high-quality, age-appropriate sex and relationships education may leave young people vulnerable to inappropriate sexual behaviours and sexual exploitation.

Pupils understood the importance of applying security settings on social networking sites but did not always know how to set them or had not bothered to do so.

Approximately one third of respondents wanted to learn how to deal with mental health issues such as coping with stress, bereavement and eating disorders.

PEOPLE WITH MENTAL HEALTH PROBLEMS SAY PARTNERS ‘NOT FAZED’ WHEN TOLD ABOUT THEIR CONDITION

Two in three (63%) people with mental health problems who tell their partners about their condition have said that partners ‘weren’t fazed’ and were ‘really understanding’ when they first heard the news.

The UK’s leading mental health charity Mind and the largest provider of relationship support, Relate, have today released research which shows that 77% of people with a mental health problems surveyed actively tell their partners about their mental health, and only 5% of those people said their partners broke up with them when they heard about their condition. 74% of a random sample of people with experience of being a partner of someone with a mental health problem surveyed said they weren’t fazed or wanted to understand the other person’s situation when they were told, and just 4% of those people said they felt afraid.

Mind and Relate surveyed over 1,000 people with an experience of mental health problems in romantic relationships and asked a range of questions about communication and commitment. The charities have found that the majority of people in relationships where someone has a mental health problem communicate openly about the issue. Romantic relationships can have a major positive impact on people’s mental health, and the majority of partners are understanding about the situation.

The survey found that:

74% of people surveyed with a mental health problem said they regularly talk about their mental health with their partner, and three in five (60%) of these people said it then ‘made the relationship easier to manage’

Three in five (60%) people with mental health problems said being in a relationship has had a ‘positive impact’ on their mental health

Half (50%) of partners surveyed said dating someone with a mental health problem wasn’t as daunting as they thought it might be

Of these people, 47% said it was because they felt the mental health problem does not define the person.

Saturday 15th June 2013, Cost: £10

(For travel details please go to http://www.friendshouse.co.uk/getting-here

This workshop will present some practical and inspiring approaches that you can use in your school to support genuinely meaningful Spiritual Moral Social and Cultural (SMSC) education. It will

Ø explore the meaning and philosophy of SMSC education in secondary schools

Ø offer approaches to whole school planning that will be helpful now that OFSTED have recognised this vital strand as part of their inspection framework

Ø share a range of engaging SMSC approaches and resources for the humanities curriculum through Facing History and Ourselves, to help students combat prejudice with compassion, indifference with participation, and myth and misinformation with knowledge. Case studies here will draw on the Holocaust, the US Civil Rights Movement and issues of judgment and reconciliation.

Ø show how social and moral development needs to be seen as a whole-school issue in order to provide coherence and consistency between the curriculum and the rest of school life. Here Quaker Peace and Social Witness will offer examples of how exploring these issues can provide students with opportunities to reflect, develop self-esteem, learn to handle conflict, and explore moral and ethical issues with confidence. Links will also be made with the Peaceful Schools Movement.

Ø offer important ideas to all teachers, but especially to SMSC coordinators, senior leaders, History, RE, Citizenship and English teachers.

Facilitators

Vanessa Hull, Assistant Principal, Oasis Shirley Park Academy and Consultant, Facing History and Ourselves

From April 1, families in most circumstances will not be able to get legal aid when they go to the family court to settle a dispute.
However, legal aid will be retained for Family Mediation after April 2013, and the courts will expect couples to try mediation as their first option.
Family Mediators help people sort out their own arrangements about children and property and finances, without the need for prolonged expensive court proceedings. Legally aided mediation clients will also be entitled to a certain amount of free legal advice from a solicitor.
