This allows ESG to now provide the full service of analysis of asbestos in soils.

Stage 1 - initial screening for the presence of asbestos
Stage 3 - further quantification using Phase Contrast Microscopy (PCM)

The new service is provided at ESG’s newly opened Super Lab based in Bretby, Burton on Trent and is one of the few laboratories that have been awarded UKAS accreditation for full quantification of asbestos in soils.

Additionally, ESG is also UKAS accredited for providing management and refurbishment/demolition surveys in accordance with the latest asbestos survey guidelines. Published on 29 January 2010, HSG 264 contains the most up to date guidelines on surveying, sampling and assessment of asbestos-containing materials in commercial, industrial and domestic properties.

As well as increasing its testing capabilities, earlier this year, ESG increased its servicing capacity with the opening of a fourth bulk analysis laboratory and the ability of offer a 24 hour turnaround time for single samples.

Alex Sleeth, ESG CEO said: “At Environmental Scientifics Group, we are always looking for ways to use our expertise to benefit customers. The latest UKAS accredited services, coupled with the increased capacity from the new laboratory has been well received.
London: July 28, 2010: The International Council on Mining and Metals [ICMM], a CEO-led organisation representing the world’s leading mining and metals companies, has launched a mobile TV channel to keep its members and stakeholders informed of the latest issues surrounding environmental performance, health and safety and sustainable practices. The new TV channel can be accessed online, and users can also view it via their mobile phones, iPhones and BlackBerrys.

The new channel, branded ‘Tony TV’, will feature a series of animated videos produced by mobile marketing specialists Skill-Pill M-Learning. The concept is to create a new level of engagement and discussion around key mining topics, such as health and safety, climate change and sustainability. Using the avatar of Dr. Anthony (Tony) Hodge, the President of ICMM, as a news presenter, the ‘Tony TV’ videos feature interviews with CEOs of ICMM member organisations, including Rio Tinto, AngloGold Ashanti and Goldcorp.

Dr. Hodge is enthusiastic about the possibilities of this partnership with Skill-Pill: “Tony TV is an innovative way to communicate with our stakeholders around the world. While the internet gives us global reach, being able to reach people directly via their mobiles with informing and compelling content takes us to a new level of engagement with our stakeholders. It not only allows us to raise key industry issues, but helps us to demonstrate the leadership role played by the CEOs of our member companies.”

‘Tony TV’ videos will be available from the ICMM website (http://www.icmm.com) and the ICMM channel on YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/TheICMM). Using Skill-Pill’s mobile distribution platform, you can view the two-minute programs on your mobiles using the phone’s web browser, or via an iPhone app or BlackBerry widget.

Gerry Griffin, the founder and director of Skill-Pill says that the Tony TV series brings Skill-Pill into a new era: “We are showing that Skill-Pill is not only a powerful tool for corporate communication, but an impactful approach to increase the level of engagement within an industry.”

Eyeful Presentations, the leading presentation consultancy in Europe and North America, will announce the eagerly awaited results from their recent global survey of 250 corporate presenters on their use of PowerPoint and other presentation technologies.

The findings will be presented in two upcoming webinars in the UK and North America. The 2010 survey was carried out as a follow up to Eyeful’s initial survey in 2007. Analysis of the findings will examine just how PowerPoint and other presentation technologies are used, and in many instances misused in the business world.

“We’ve seen a lot of positive changes since our initial survey back in 2007. The phenomenon of Death by PowerPoint is recognised by businesses globally and some are making concerted efforts to address it head on,” commented Eyeful’s Managing Director Simon Morton.

“That said, it would seem that there is still a lot work to be done in some areas. This year’s survey gives us a clear indication of progress in the last three years along with the impact of new presentation technologies such as Google Presentations and Prezi.”

The two webinars will be delivered on the 3rd August. Spaces are limited for the two events and interest levels following the survey are very high so the events are expected to be fully booked.

“Here at Eyeful, we speak to people every day who struggle with all the elements of a successful presentation. This will be the first time that the industry has voiced it’s opinion for three years so there’s a real buzz and anticipation” continued Morton “There’s no doubt that the use of different presentation technologies has grown in the last 3 years. These results give us a real indication of how this growth has shaped how we use presentations in our companies, from the traditional boardroom environment to new online and social media applications.”
In the Spring of 2003, Simon Morton founded Eyeful to provide presentation services to businesses looking to improve the way they share information with their most important audiences – their prospects, customers, employees & shareholders.
The company firmly believes that key to their success is their unique approach of addressing the entire presentation process through their “Presentation Optimisation” methodology. This holistic approach ensures that clients’ presentations are made more effective, not just “prettier”.

Their work varies from high impact conference decks through to interactive credentials and pitch presentations – all created in PowerPoint to ensure complete flexibility and control by the client. This approach of “open source” presentation development mixed with ground breaking design means that Eyeful now boasts an impressive client base including major corporations like Microsoft, Adobe, American Express and Coca-Cola.

A dedicated centre for showcasing and testing ground-breaking applications in high-output UV LED print curing has been expanded with the opening of a new customer application development facility.

British-based UV LED pioneer Integration Technology Ltd (ITL) has extended its Customer Centre to take in a range of printing and application machinery (Editor: see Notes below)

Unrivalled by any other UV LED equipment maker, the ITL Customer Centre, originally opened in December 2009, now offers practical applications testing in addition to meeting facilities and marks the opening of the sixth building at ITL’s Heyford Park Campus near Oxford.

For use by potential clients as well as ink and applications development partners, the £100,000 extension to the customer application development facility is primarily equipped to test and assist in the development of new LED inks for a variety of different market applications under actual printing conditions.

A pioneer in UV technology, ITL has seen growing interest in potential application for its products in product decorating, product packaging, printed electronics, and photovoltaics as well as wide format digital printing where the company has significant market share.

The company is a consistent investor in rolling out ever more advanced solutions to market.

“Despite the recent recession we have continued to invest over eighteen per cent of total overhead in R&D and applications development,” says managing director Adrian Lockwood.

“This latest development demonstrates our long term commitment to bringing cutting edge UV cure solutions to current and emerging markets.”

A partnership between leading, mobile technology group 1st Touch (www.1sttouch.com) and user process management software company OpenSpan (www.openspan.com) eliminates the restrictive practices inhibiting local authority organisations, such as social-housing providers, from deploying mobile technology to field-based staff.

1st Touch has developed successful integrations with many back-office systems used in local authority organisations, housing associations and ALMOs (arms length management organisations). In their opinion, there is widespread concern that some users are constrained in their ability to choose the right mobile solution. Either they face significant integration fees from their back-office system vendor or are tied in to unacceptable proprietary systems. This limits their ability to realise the significantly lower operational costs that mobile technology offers, in areas such as housing management, service provision, supporting people, surveying, inspection and utilities.

By identifying underlying application objects and utilizing the latest visual programming techniques, OpenSpan’s proven technology overcomes these problems by capturing data directly from multiple back-office systems for use in 1st Touch mobile solutions. This eliminates any restrictive constraints on integration and enables users to replicate, build and administer PDA based applications easily.

1st Touch mobile technology can bring significant efficiencies and productivity increases to any application involving remote, mobile or field-based operations. The software manages, supports and controls all aspects of mobile operatives’ activities. The resilient but flexible system enables easy, programming-free, user-customisable PDA based solutions to be created and is designed to simplify handheld form design and data capture. Any type of electronic form can be generated without the need for Business Process Mapping.

As OpenSpan’s graphical user interface complements the unparalleled usability of 1st Touch technology, mobile applications can be delivered rapidly to the field and can be easily developed over time as needs change. As implementation speeds allow applications to be generated in a fraction of the time taken by traditional integration methods, any potential cost savings and efficiencies occur much sooner than would otherwise be possible.

Robert Dent CEO of 1st Touch is keen to stress the significant benefits for user organisations, commenting, “As part of the 1st Touch solution, OpenSpan’s seamless integration abilities allow users to realise the full ROI benefits of existing back-office investments far more quickly. This is because users can now by-pass the silo-like limitations of bespoke integration or worse, having their choice of mobile solution dictated to them. As OpenSpan tears down the walls between applications, local authorities and social-housing providers, are now able to move forward. No other approach offers them this level of freedom.

“We are naturally delighted, therefore, to announce the partnership with OpenSpan, a company recognised globally for its success in financial services, telecommunications, outsourced call centres and other industries. It is only right that this list should now include the local authority and social-housing markets.”

Eric Musser, CEO of OpenSpan welcomed Dent’s comments adding, “A number of technology vendors are still clinging to the outmoded concept of trying to lock their customers into their solutions. In these times of budget austerity, we are very pleased that our collaboration with 1st Touch is freeing up local authority organisations and social-housing providers to choose the best mobile solutions for their needs and budget.”

LONDON July 22, 2010 - BancTec, a global provider of advanced, high-volume, document and payment processing solutions and services, announced today that British Airways (BA) has selected it for a major engineering record management effort, expected to last initially for three years. In total, BancTec’s business process outsourcing (BPO) division will scan approximately 65 million engineering records for BA, providing the airline with significant added business value and cost savings.

“This is crucial to the ongoing success of our business, as it allows us to manage our data much more efficiently,” said Adrian Hassell, Aircraft Documentation Manager, British Airways. “Because of the scale and scope of its existing BPO operations in the UK, BancTec was the ideal choice for this venture. We look forward to forming a successful partnership with them.”

“British Airways is one of the most prestigious airlines in the world, and we are honored to be their selection for this critical project,” said Steve Downey, General Manager, BancTec Ltd. “We look forward to working with BA over the next few years and delivering the value and cost savings for which our enterprise-class BPO capabilities are recognised.”

European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) regulations require all airlines to preserve their engineering records for at least 24 months after the aircraft or component is permanently withdrawn from service. At British Airways (with a fleet of 250 aircraft in service and on order) the majority of this documentation is in hard copy, which creates a significant bank of records to manage over the life cycle of each aircraft.

The new solution enables engineers to perform ‘free text’ searches, improving both the research facility and the ability to recover records when transferring aircraft or components to future operators. The introduction of this service will also enable BA to move to a fully electronic record database, meeting the requirements of BS 10008.

In addition to solving these issues, BancTec’s solution for BA will also help the company reduce hard copy paper storage costs and consolidate supplier contracts. To gain maximum efficiency, the BancTec offering will be built around existing systems and infrastructure within its Heathrow BPO operation—thus conforming to EASA and Eu.Ops regulations within the airline industry.

Specifically, BancTec’s enterprise-class scanning solutions will be utilized to image the high-value documents within customer-specified timeframes, with other technology being employed to enable free text searching of scanned documents. This search capability is essential for locating documents related to spare parts.

BancTec will also deploy a secure, three-tier storage archive, which will help reduce business risk from lost data and ensure better compliance with industry regulations.

The ultimate demise of traditional mercury-based bulb technology in favour of more energy-efficient UV LED alternatives became a debating issue at the 2010 Digital Label Summit when CEO of UK-based Integration Technology Ltd (ITL) www.uvintegration.com, Adrian Lockwood, turned his presentation into a question-and-answer session.

Benefits of zero maintenance, low heat, increased energy efficiency and lower cost of ownership inherent in UV LED technologies were amongst key topics discussed amongst over 200 label printing industry executives attending the seminar on the nature and performance of digital inks, toners and drying/curing systems during the Summit (June 29-30 2010, Barcelona).

A specialist in UV LED curing in wide format digital printing, Lockwood sought to clear possible misconceptions about the technology within the label sector, where early applications of UV LED curing are underway.

Opening the subject to debate enabled him to highlight UV LEDs gains over conventional curing technologies within digital printing and outline future application for the label sector.

“Rather than deliver a presentation, the organisers felt the audience would be better served by discussion,” said Lockwood after the seminar.

“The feedback was positive and very encouraging,” he related, stressing: “there’s clearly enormous growth potential in the label market for UV LED curing, not only in respect to inkjet but to flexographic inks.

“Advantages in greater energy efficiency, lower maintenance requirements equate to savings in cost in addition to environmental compliance that spells the end of less efficient mercury-based bulb technology,” he added.

The previous week saw ITL secure record enquiries from visitors attending the international printing industry FESPA 2010 event in Munich with a demonstration of a ground-breaking new development in UV LED curing for digital ink jet and label web printing.

ITL’s stand hosted digital inkjet applications printing at full speed using UV LED cure technology partnered with SunJet Crystal Ink.

Specifically designed for inkjet curing applications, ITL’s latest version LEDZero SolidcureTM ‘s class leading compact footprint and ultra light weight combined with high intensity output enables a new generation of miniature UV inkjet systems and the first truly serviceable solution of its kind.

Also running on the stand was a JF label web machine showcasing brand new LEDZero Pincure product in addition to a further LEDZero SolidcureTM for final cure printing onto a thin film substrate.

Integrating solid state UV curing into high-resolution inkjet print engines, LEDZero Pincure initiates a photochemical reaction to ‘pin’ the ink droplets with a degree of precision not previously possible with bulb technology.

A commercial application utilising ITL technologies at full speed proved a winning combination for FESPA visitors and validated the company’s decision to use the show as a showcase for “a step-change in curing technology”.

“This is a commercial ‘heads up’ for UK firms trying to build a cost-effective foothold in China’ – Andrew Harrison.

HOW TO MAKE BUSINESS EXPANSION INTO CHINA REMOTELY POSSIBLE

A specialist Shanghai-based investment partnership is pioneering a brand new ‘highly cost-effective’ remote office scheme to help UK manufacturers expand into the Chinese market.

Andrew Harrison, lead auditor at Rubicon Partners Industries China (RPIC) says the new ‘remote office one stop shop’ initiative will enable UK manufacturers to get into China faster and more easily than ever before.

Said Harrison: “Shanghai is an ideal location for a remote office. The city is both a vital transport hub and centrally located. But we know from years of experience that setting up in China can be seriously complex. Our new remote office scheme can help companies benefit from having an employee based in the country. That recruit can then cut the costs of an existing supply chain or work on a new outsourcing strategy.”

He added: “We recruit bilingual Chinese nationals to overcome language and cultural barriers. “

Integra, a UK manufacturer of curtain and blind suspension systems, used RPIC’s remote office scheme, which can cost as little as £20,000 for the first year, to find a design engineer in China.

John Martin, Integra MD said: “RPIC has the in-house skill sets that companies like ours need when it comes to finding key staff in China. Now we have an employee in situ the design process has become quicker and more effective.”

“The new designer not only supports the existing in-house product design and development function in the UK, but works directly with business partners in China to manage the transition of new products from concept to volume manufacture.”

He added: “It’s made getting someone out there a lot easier and cheaper than if we’d be doing it on our own. Remote office facilities are a great idea for companies who need only one or two individuals but want to somebody to monitor them. The initiative is working so well we are considering plans to extend the service to other aspects of our UK operation such as quality assurance and supply chain.”

RPIC are now offering a formalised version of the service for UK-based organisations.

Said Harrison: “I’m hoping that with more recruits in-house we will be able to create a truly proactive and dynamic centre of excellence.”

Perhaps you live in the country or maybe you just want to bring a touch of rural living to your home. Wherever you live, traditional wooden gates are a timeless feature, evoking images of country life. Sturdy and secure, without compromising on style, this rustic gate is ideal for families with children and pets.

Here are Cannock Gates’ top tips to hang wooden gates:

When you receive your gate:

1. Gates must be stored in a safe, clean, dry place and must be laid flat if not hung straight away.
2. Gates must be treated with an oil based wood preservative as soon as possible and before any fittings are attached as untreated timber is prone to swell and discolour. A minimum of three coats should be applied.

Posts:

1. Wall mounted posts must be secured in at least 3 places with rawl bolts and the base of the post should be 2’’ from the ground.
2. The hole for in-ground posts must be at least 24’’ deep for 6’ posts and 36’’ deep for 9’ posts. Place gravel at the base of the hole for drainage and then fill with concrete.
3. Leave a ¼’’ gap between the post and the gate when fitting a single gate.

How to hang your gate:

1. Hinge bolts must be put through the centre of the hanging stile not the shoulder joint and remember to leave the gap between post and gate stile.
2. Use heavy reversible or hook and band hinges and all hinges should hang off the back of the posts.

REV07/10 - 19th July 2010

London, UK – 19th July 2010, Revelation Software Limited are pleased to announce the availability of the latest release of OpenInsight (OI). OI version 9.2 provides Revelation’s OI developers with a number of enhancements and new features to further increase their productivity and to also enhance their end-user’s experience.

The main highlights of this new release include:

•	OpenInsight for Web (O4W) – A brand new web 2.0 development toolkit that empowers OpenInsight developers to rapidly create browser based forms, reports, menus, dashboards and programs. Furthermore, with support for SQL, D3 and U2, anyone using these database technologies can now quickly and easily create data driven websites with or without code, saving development time and reducing costs.

•	SQL Connector – The new SQL connector enables OI to treat SQL tables as native OI data tables. This allows all of the OpenInsight tools (including forms, reports, popups, stored procedures and O4W) to work with SQL data just as they do with OI’s own native data. The benefit to developers is immense, in that the learning curve to support multiple databases in one application is dramatically reduced.

•	OpenInsight for D3 – This connector will allow OpenInsight to be used as a front end application development tool with the D3 database from TigerLogic Corporation as the backend. As with the SQL connector, once the connector is set-up, the D3 database is accessed through the OI interface just as if it were native OI data.

•	Single Sign-On (SSO) – By configuring SSO, OpenInsight users can be authenticated via traditional OpenInsight methods, via Windows security, or via a combination of both.

•	Bitmap Indexes – This type of index is used when the number of indexed values are relatively small; e.g. Sex (M/F), Active (Yes/No), etc. Bitmap Indexes are extremely fast, and this new approach has enabled Revelation to greatly increase performance where indexes are used.

•	OECGI3 – This is the OpenEngine Common Gateway Interface version 3 which supports Failover and Load Balancing modes. These modes make OECGI3 a more robust connection object and allows for extra capacity and/or redundancy to be added to a web application.

“This release continues our commitment to extended OpenInsight by embracing new technologies as well as providing seamless integration with external databases. In and of itself O4W is so feature rich it could have been marketed as a standalone product,” said Mike Ruane, President/CEO Revelation Software, “The inclusion of O4W as part of our OpenInsight Development Suite further empowers our development community.”

OpenInsight Development Suite 9.2 can be purchased as a front end development toolkit for U2 (Unniverse and Unidata), D3 and SQL Server databases. “With the release of the new connectors in OpenInsight 9.2, we have opened up new opportunities and potential markets for our customer base.” said Martyn Phillips, Business Development Manager, Revelation Software Limited. “Our traditional licensing model is very cost effective, however with this ground breaking release, Revelation has been able to package the toolset without OpenInsight’s native Linear Hash database. This has resulted in new licenses that further reduce the cost of developing and deploying OpenInsight based applications for use with one or more of the third party databases.”

OpenInsight Development Suite 9.2 is available from Revelation Software, or through their network of resellers.
