Local business networking group GIN is a keen supporter of Winston’s Wish and a number of its members will be taking part in the Sunrise Walk on 25 September 2010 at Cheltenham Racecourse. Reflecting the unique nature of the networking group, and the fact it is very much a team of businesses working together, the members of GIN taking part in the walk will be doing so whilst being connected together via a sailing rope.

The GIN founders believe it is vitally important that members of its group try to help and support the local communities in which they live and operate their businesses hence its decision to work with Winston’s Wish and support the Sunrise Walk.

Charlie Smith of Parsons Flooring is one of the co-founders of GIN and speaking about the Sunrise Walk he said,

"We hope to have around 20 members of GIN taking part in the walk and aim to raise several thousand pounds for Winston’s Wish, a charity that all of us within GIN are passionate about supporting. The Sunrise Walk promises to be a fun day and one that our members are keen to bring their families along to as well, so we cannot wait to get attached to the rope and get started".

The Gloucestershire walk will begin and end at Cheltenham Racecourse and will take a circular route, along stone paths, farm tracks and through rural terrain. The route is undulating, including several ascents and there are a number of stiles along the way around. Stunning views of the surrounding countryside, Malvern Hills and nearby towns along with numerous points of interest are assured.

Speaking about GIN’s involvement in the Sunrise Walk, Sally Davies Regional Fundraising and Events Manager said,

“We are really pleased that such a large group from GIN are taking part in the walk, being joined together they will definitely be a talking point on the day! With only a couple of weeks left to go until the walk we are looking forward to the day and hope that it will be a truly special event for everyone. There is still time to register your place at the walk; sign up today to make sure you don’t miss out on all the fun”.

Wakefield and District Housing (WDH) has chosen mobile technology from 1st Touch (www.1sttouch.com) for its property and land survey employees; with a view to extending the technology to other field-based disciplines across the enterprise.

WDH, who became the largest single housing stock transfer organisation in 2005, has responsibility for over 31,000 homes lived in by over 100,000 people and are the fifth largest housing organisation in England. With a wide range of housing types from sheltered housing to high rise communities and a £720 million improvement scheme running until 2012, the survey function is a key element of the WDH success story.

The systems used by survey teams, in the field, are therefore central to the delivery of the high standards WDH demands. As an existing PDA solution used by the department was unable to integrate with WDH’s Housing Management system, it was decided to identify a new mobile solution which had proven integration links to the back-office and which was flexible enough to allow electronic forms to be created internally. This would not only improve the systems used in surveying operation but would also enable WDH to take the first step towards identifying a scalable, enterprise-wide solution that ultimately could be rolled out across multiple disciplines including: responsive repairs, maintenance and inspections. After an extensive review of the market and a rigorous evaluation process WDH chose 1st Touch.

1st Touch applications can bring significant efficiencies and productivity increases to any application where field based operatives provide services. 1st Touch has already won widespread acclaim in the social housing market where the software manages, supports and control all aspects of mobile operatives’ activities. The resilient but flexible system enables easy, programming-free, user-customisable PDA based solutions to be created through its easy to use graphical interface and is specifically designed to simplify handheld form design and data capture. Any type of electronic form can be generated without the need for Business Process Mapping. 1st Touch has also developed high quality integration with most of the leading housing management systems used by local authority housing organisations and ALMOs.

Louise Muirhead, Senior Business Analyst at WDH felt that these features were a major factor in the decision to choose 1st Touch, noting, “We needed to identify a new mobile solution for the surveying function first of all, as the existing PDA system we had used for this function was not able to integrate with our back-office system. In addition, we still had some forms and spreadsheets that were paper based and we needed all this information to be integrated, accessible and viewable in one single location. We chose 1st Touch to meet these requirements.

“Having seen the system in use at a reference site visit we were impressed by the easy to use mobile application builder with a graphical interface that allows the design, creation and modification of forms; without having to return to the supplier and pay more. There was also a proven integration with our existing Housing Management system.

"However, the most influential factor was when we ran 1st Touch on our real-time test environment. 1st Touch performed well and proved the integration throughout exhaustive testing. We were also impressed by the 1st Touch approach as their staff appeared highly motivated to work closely in partnership with us at our offices. With such a clear proof of concept in hand, coupled with a very effective working relationship, we decided to start implementing the system with our survey department. Ultimately though, we can see how 1st Touch can be easily rolled out across WDH to areas such as responsive repairs, maintenance and inspections. In all, we envisage that over 200 operatives might ultimately use it. This would help us achieve significant productivity gains and to improve efficiency right across the organisation.”

Colin Hare, Business Systems Manager at WDH, emphasised the WDH commitment to continuous improvement and customer service, adding, “Our record level of tenant satisfaction illustrates WDH’s commitment to providing high-quality services to tenants, to ensure everything we do is done professionally and that we go that extra mile to meet the needs of tenants.

In addition, WDH aims to exceed the standards of the ‘Decent Homes Initiative’ and, with other government directives to fulfil such as ‘Warmer Greener Homes”, we are always considering ways of improving all aspects of our operations. A key element of this is the use of technology and we are aware of the considerable benefits and efficiency savings that mobile technology can bring to both our surveying function and to WDH as a whole. We look forward to working closely with 1st Touch as we examine these benefits across disciplines.”

Robert Dent, CEO of 1st Touch welcomed these comments adding, “As one of the largest housing organisations in England, getting things right for tenants is all important. WDH has an excellent and proven track record in achieving this. However, in the current economic climate, maintaining high standards is going to be a challenge. By evaluating the considerable productivity benefits and efficiency savings that mobile technology can bring across the enterprise, WDH is demonstrating their commitment to investing in the future. It is the tenants of course who are rightly the ultimate beneficiary. “

Growth in business use of unified comms solutions, running over IP, and the convergence market

Wick Hill/Panasonic release: September 2nd, 2010 - Panasonic has signalled a major expansion into the growing voice/data convergence market with the appointment of value added distributor Wick Hill in the UK and Germany. The distributor will spearhead business sales of Panasonic’s unified comms office solutions through the channel.

Stephen Gerrard, UK Country Marketing Manager, said: “Panasonic took the initiative earlier this year to merge its disparate systems and solutions business units into a single 'converged' business domain, now known as PSNE (Panasonic System Networks Europe). The new Panasonic company focuses on the development and provisioning of systems over IP infrastructures.

“Starting from a market leading position in both the business voice communications market and the video surveillance market , (as well as a significant presence in document imaging and printing), Panasonic is leveraging its global expertise in both audio and video applications to break new ground in applications integration and convergence over enterprise IP infrastructures. We believe that Wick Hill has the experience and commitment to help us grow the market in this area.”

This move also represents a significant further expansion into the convergence market for VAD Wick Hill, a leading IP infrastructure specialist which has successfully diversified into unified comms and whose portfolio now includes telecoms and converged solutions suppliers such as Samsung, Gamma Telecom and Oak, as well as security stalwarts such as WatchGuard and Check Point.

Ian Kilpatrick, chairman Wick Hill Group, commented: “We are delighted to be working with a market leader like Panasonic, which has such a depth of experience in the communications market and a well-developed, comprehensive range of unified comms solutions for business.

“This appointment is an important investment for us in our continued drive into convergence and our ongoing strategy to deliver solutions that voice and data resellers can sell and implement. Our channel partners will be able to provide solutions that offer end users immediate tactical benefits, as well as forming a key part of a future move into broader unified comms.”

Panasonic’s Office Communications Solutions
Wick Hill will provide Panasonic’s range of office communications products, but will focus on the Panasonic Network Communications Platform (KX-NCP), a range of business communications solutions primarily for SMEs. These allow companies to easily implement unified comms, providing innovative IP telephony features and functionality over both local office and broadband managed IP networks.

The KX-NCP range offers full business communications features, built-in advanced applications, and a choice of fixed, mobile and advanced touch screen IP terminals.
It makes it easy for staff to always stay in touch and improves team productivity by using applications integrated with the communications solution.

The range facilitates increased mobility and remote working and can improve responsiveness to customers through the use of integrated applications, which speed up and monitor customer service levels. It also provides the opportunity to reduce costs through converged communications for voice and data, using integrated SIP telephony services.

Growth of unified comms and convergence
Research company MZA reported1 that the total UC applications market in the UK was valued at GBP 178 million (end user level) for 2009 and would rise to GBP 402 million in 2014. MZA’s definition of unified comms was ‘Conferencing and Messaging.’ Included in this were web, video and audio conferencing, as well as voice mail, unified messaging and enterprise instant messaging.

These figures, however, would increase significantly, according to Stephen Gerrard, UK Country Marketing Manager for Panasonic, if you use the umbrella term ‘convergence’, of which unified comms is part. Gerrard reckons the figures could increase fourfold, to a potential market of around GBP 1.6 billion plus by 2014.

Everyone has a different definition of convergence, but Gerrard takes the term to include any aspect of corporate activity which requires a signal or message to be sent from point A to point B, so theoretically could be 'Converged' onto an IP infrastructure.

That means elements such as IP video security, access control, facilities management and building management services, (i.e. lighting, heating, air conditioning, fire alarms, smoke detection, etc.) over the corporate IP infrastructure. The definition would also extend to mobile phones, the car fleet, home workers, etc.

Gerrard said: “Convergence is going to happen on a major scale and unified comms is the first step on this road. Wick Hill and Panasonic are taking this first step together and aim to be at the forefront of the UK's migration to a converged applications future.”

About Wick Hill
The company sources and delivers best-of-breed, easy-to-use solutions through its channel partners, with a portfolio that covers security, performance, access, networking, unified communications and hosted solutions.

This summer's blockbuster could emerge from Appledore in Kent after Josephine Buchan, TV presenter and theatre producer, was drafted in by Joe Ellis' Tea Room Guide to direct and present what is thought to be the first ever tea room feature film.

Joe Ellis’ Tea Room Guide commissioned Harold Trill of HAT Productions to record the feature on film at Miss Mollett’s High Class Tea Room www.missmollettstearoom.co.uk in Appledore, Kent, which is owned and run by sisters, Frances and Alex. Former BBC Pebble Mill presenter Josephine Buchan provided her production expertise for the film.

If top billing in a feature film wasn't enough for the sisters, their tea room was also awarded a coveted Joe Ellis’ Tea Room Guide Highly Recommended accolade. The film is being premiered on the Joe Ellis Tea Room Guide website at www.tea-room-guide.org.uk/buchan

Joe Ellis, founder of the tea room guide, says:

"I was absolutely delighted that Josephine Buchan added her expertise to the film. Her direction and presentation add immense weight to what is new ground in the tea room fraternity. I hope that this film sends out a clear message that the English tea
room is alive and kicking.

“The fact we are premiering the film on the Joe Ellis Tea Room Guide website is testament to the fact that tea room fans are embracing online media as a format by which they can enjoy their interest."

Josephine Buchan, who also featured on television and radio favourites The House of Elliott, Wish You Were Here and Loose Ends, to name but a few, says:

"This project allowed me to feed my experience in television and theatre into a whole new type of project. I doubt many people can say they were involved in the first tea room feature film! Not only did I get to work with an interesting team of people, but it was a pleasure to see that the traditional English tea room remains a prominent feature in so many people's daily lives. I hope that the film goes someway in harnessing that enthusiasm for such an English institution."

The new film is the latest addition to Joe Ellis' Tea Room Guide www.tea-room-guide.org.uk, a hot bed of information for tea and tea room lovers, providing tips on tea making, photographs of tea rooms, reviews, tea facts and more. Joe Ellis’ forth-coming book, Joe Ellis’ Tea Room Guide A Guide to English Tea Rooms will feature Highly Recommended and Recommended winners.

An off-shoot of the site is Time for Tea magazine, which was launched earlier this year and provides tea room features, articles on the history of tea, health benefits of drinking tea and world tea news, as well as an article on the five major tea regions. The full colour magazine, which is free, professionally produced and only requires postage costs, runs in conjunction with the tea room guide website, as well as Joe Ellis' tea room blog.

Joe Ellis, who is chairman of the National Association of Karate and Martial Art Schools (NAKMAS - www.nakmas.org.uk), the national martial arts governing body, will list tea rooms on the website that he considers Highly Recommended, Recommended, but also those in the ‘Not my cup of tea’ category. Those tearooms that he feels are Highly Recommended and Recommended will bear a window sticker and be issued a certificate.

Tearooms have provided Joe with a comfortable setting for many years. Joe has Asperger’s Syndrome, a form of autism, and dislikes very crowded places, prefers quieter environments, and can easily be overwhelmed if too much is happening at once. He also gets very disturbed when there are constant banging noises or shouting. Tearooms provide a tranquil environment where Joe feels more comfortable.

Frances and Alex, owners of Miss Mollett’s High Class Tea Room, said: "To receive the Highly Recommended status from Joe Ellis' Tea Room guide is a real boost for the tea room and our customers. It is a seal of approval. Then, to feature in a film, is an added bonus. It was an enjoyable experience to work with Josephine on the film. We are secretly hoping the phone calls from Hollywood will start coming through shortly."

MILLIONS OF BRITISH PARENTS PUTTING CHILDREN AT RISK IN THE CAR

New research out today reveals a staggering four out five British parents are unaware of the in-car safety legislation for children, suggesting millions are at risk.
Of the 1,000 parents surveyed, only 20% knew that children must use a or a booster cushion until the age of 12 or when they reach 1.35 metres tall.

Alarmingly, it seems some are currently basing the decision to remove the in-car protection on the length of the journey, or even on their child’s comfort or attitude. Nearly a fifth of those surveyed say that they have felt pressure from their child to let them sit in the car without a high back booster or a booster cushion, while 15% say their child has pestered them in an attempt to only use the latter.

It’s also worrying that the average UK parent switches from a car seat to a booster cushion when their child is only six, meaning the child is no longer receiving any side impact protection. With new research by Loughborough University suggesting that one out of four car accidents are side collisions[1], which account for 20% of all child car crash fatalities[2], this highlights a massive need for parental education lead by car seat manufacturers

Britax is always striving to offer maximum protection for children as they develop. This week sees the discontinuation of their booster cushion as they urge parents to use high back boosters in their place. Child Safety Expert at Britax Mark Bennett explains “Our aim is to educate and encourage parents to use optimum safety measures for their little ones. Whilst booster cushions are better than no child car seat, they offer no side impact protection, and with one in four accidents happening side-on, this is essential”.

Which? – the independent, product testing consumer magazine - takes the same view as Britax on side impact protection, and recently issued a statement calling for backless booster seats to be phased out. Richard Headland, Which? Car Editor comments, "Which? welcomes Britax's decision to stop selling its booster cushions, and is calling on other manufacturers to do the same. While backless booster seats are better than nothing, they simply don't provide enough protection."

Mark Bennett continues, “The results of the research are extremely alarming. With only one in five parents aware of the in-car safety legislations there must be millions of children at risk, suggesting there is a huge amount of education required”.

Chris Patience, head of technical policy for the AA adds, “With some 16 million cars expected to be on the roads this August bank holiday, we urge all parents to think carefully about the in-car protection they provide for their children. The lack of any side impact protection means that booster cushions aren’t suitable for use as a child’s main restraint – for regular journeys in the family car.”

Designed to offer parents on-going tips about car seat safety, Britax recently launched a Facebook page called ‘Baby on Board: Keeping our Children Safe’, and today sees the launch of an interactive ‘quiz’ application that teaches parents about both the legalities and the necessity for side impact protection. Both are great sources of information for parents in need of some top line advice about the do’s and don’ts of in-car travel with their children.

Britax has also created a ‘crash test footage’ video which educates about the importance of using a car seat with side impact protection for older children by demonstrating the lack of protection offered by a booster cushion – it can be found at http://www.britax.co.uk/car-seats/highback-booster-campaign.
Footnotes:

Britax offers the UK market a choice of four award winning high-backed boosters including the ADVENTURE, KID, KID plus and KIDFIX. Whilst UK safety standards currently do not test for side impact, Britax does. All four of these seats have been designed to keep children as safe as possible, featuring specially designed head and neck protectors and energy absorbing material to offer optimal head protection and body containment for older children.

To coincide with the discontinuation of the booster cushion, Britax is launching an integrated PR and marketing campaign, designed to educate parents about the importance of side impact protection for older children. The campaign includes consumer advertising, an educational video, a series of radio interviews with Britax’s in-house car safety expert and a national news story which looks into parent’s limited awareness of car seat legislations. There will also be a social media element to the campaign consisting of an informative Facebook group called Baby On Board: Keeping our children safe, and an interactive and educational online quiz.

In-line with this focus on education and the discontinuation of their booster cushion, Britax will also be offering price promotions of up to 50% off their highback booster range through their selected retailers to help parents that may already have a booster cushion upgrade to a highback booster at a more affordable price’.

Domestic wind turbine manufacturer Gaia-Wind supports the Scottish Government's backing of floating wind farms that will help bring the commercial viability and benefits of wind turbines to an even bigger audience.

Following discussions between First Minister Alex Salmond and Norwegian energy giant Statoil, Scotland could soon become home to the world's first floating wind farm.

In a bid to encourage Statoil to use Scottish waters to test and develop the commercial viability of their deep water Hywind floating turbines, the First Minister has suggested locations off the coast of Aberdeenshire or the Isle of Lewis.

Scottish waters as a whole are thought to offer a quarter of Europe's entire offshore renewable potential.

Should the project go ahead, it is estimated that offshore wind power could create around 20,000 jobs, £30 billion in investment as well as a much needed move towards energy security; a point domestic wind turbine manufacturer Gaia-Wind feels is long overdue, as a spokesperson explains:

“With the finite nature of fossil fuels becoming an increasingly pressing matter, we need to act now to create a world that can function just as easily from renewable energy as it does oil.

“The forward thinking nature of the Scottish Government shows the wheels are in motion to do so.

“One of the biggest incentives of large scale renewable energy – such as plans for a floating wind farm – is the idea that Scotland could secure and harness its own energy resources meaning the need to rely on power from other countries could become redundant. The idea of Scotland producing power independently is a very attractive prospect indeed.”

With the Scottish Government backing wind energy all the way, it's hoped that the increasing prominence of large scale wind farms will also enlighten home owners and small businesses to the benefits of wind turbines on a domestic level

With recycling and eco-awareness at an all time high, Gaia-Wind predicts small scale harnessing of the elements will be next on the agenda for environmentally savvy consumers:

“Despite Scotland's massive offshore wind potential, the wind energy that everyday people can harness from their back gardens, roof tops or small holdings should not be underestimated.

“With the Government's generous feed-in tariffs offering extra financial incentive, home owners needn't wait for offshore wind to power their homes when renewable power can be harvested on their doorstep; capable of powering entire homes with any excess being sold back to the grid.”

“Ultimately, wind turbines are becoming a much more viable energy option to a greater number of people.”

The Consortium will be amongst prestigious company at this year’s European Supply Chain Excellence Awards including Unilever, Proctor & Gamble, Virgin Media and Marks & Spencer.

Mark W Barnett, Chief Operations Officer describes The Consortium as having innovation at its core “Innovation is delivered by our people – not only by investment in I.T solutions or expensive consultancy. By continuing to optimize our supply chain solutions and delivering the exceptional service we are known for, we continue to lead the way in our markets”

That conviction has guided him and his team at The Consortium as they embarked on an ambitious and complex process of change in 2009 to further develop and enhance the company’s supply chain solutions, in order to support the future growth of the business.

Barnett describes the initiative as “incorporating lean and agile principles in our logistics model” This evolved in late 2009 with the launch of a 3 year supply chain initiative called “Going for Gold” which was designed to “work in partnership with our supply base, raising the bar of customer service and supply chain excellence using innovative thinking and process management.”

Three main innovations exist at the core of this initiative:
1. Moving from separate purchasing and product marketing teams to consolidated category management teams
2. Application of lean and agile approaches to supply chain solutions to both internal and external business operations
3. Launching “Going for Gold” – a 3 year operational plan designed to step change customer service through effective collaboration with suppliers and innovative supply chain design

1. Category management
“A lot of planning and rigour went into restructuring into one unified category team.” Barnett explains “The purpose of this structure is to seed a truly entrepreneurial approach to the future development of categories, with the consumer genuinely at its heart”

2. “Supply Chain solutions can be found by adopting a lean and agile approach”
At the outset, a radical decision was made to approach the design of the process by considering what could be taken out in order to deliver more. In doing this, a critical element has been to apply leaner approaches to warehouse design, flow and clever use of storage facilities. With space at a premium a new supply channel was created called P2O (Purchase 2 Order).

Barnett explains “we can continue to offer a next day delivery service to our customers, but without cash being tied up in stock holding. This allows greater agility in coping with rapidly changing ranges”

3. Launching “Going for Gold”
The goal was to find an innovative and engaging way to develop, design and communicate the plan which would motivate both staff and supply base to help step-change the business. Barnett explains that a similar approach to engage with both audiences was developed through a Mind Map approach which allowed the vision and goals to be visually communicated easily.

Ultimately the diligence applied has paid off through each of these stages. By rethinking every part of the process, The Consortium team created a better, smarter supply chain process that sets a new reference point in its class for performance, agility and cost-effectiveness.

With these significant changes, The Consortium continues to push the limits and is already seeing the benefits. “It’s still early days” says Barnett “But since the launch in February, we are very encouraged by early results, despite operating in a tough market context”

The awards take place on the 18th November at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London’s Mayfair. Last year’s winner was GlaxoSmithKline.

New military-grade technical fabric meets the heat of modern lifestyles; new personal care accessory is a ‘must’ for green image-conscious consumers

A new small and totally discrete underarm clothing tag which uses nano technology to capture, store and eliminate the molecules responsible for body odour (BO) has been launched as the ultimate antidote to today’s hectic lifestyles which see millions unsatisfied with the use of deodorants alone. The breakthrough invention will come as a huge relief to those who work long hours or are ‘on the go’ until late in the day, particularly at this time of year. If you don’t like the thought of always painting or spraying on chemicals that are absorbed into your armpits then Odegon Tags are ideal for you. Designed and produced by technical fabric innovators, Odegon (for “odour, gone”) Technologies, the antisocial odour resulting from human sweat is eliminated via a teabag-sized fabric patch housing a piece of activated nano porous special material. The soft, chemical-free, odourless, inert, non-allergenic and environmentally-friendly tags are ironed on easily at home and remain permanently in place for the life of the garment where they perform regardless of the number of washes or dry cleans. Once applied you don’t even know they are there as they just seem to merge into the garment.
The tags are on sale via the Odegon website (www.odegon.com)

“Odegon Tags were discovered whilst formulating new materials for special filters to protect military personnel from lethal nerve gases and agents,” explains Odegon Technologies’ Tom Rawlings. “We were right to assume that if the material met the most demanding tests ever devised against chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear (CBRN) suit requirements, it would be able to tackle BO. We understand that deodorant products may not be keeping up with today’s active lifestyles and that there is consumer reluctance to throw more chemicals at the problem. We anticipate consumers will apply Odegon Tags to a core set of garments within their summer and winter wardrobes these are the clothes, that people find tend to smell even after washing. Business people can equip a week of shirts or blouses for the lifetime of the clothes, for under £20.”
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

NOTGOINGTOUNI.CO.UK SEE NUMBERS SOAR AS THOUSANDS MISS OUT ON UNIVERSITY

23rd August 2010- London- notgoingtouni.co.uk experienced the most remarkable week of their history to date by attracting a record 10,000 visitors to the website on A-Level Results Day. This huge upsurge in traffic represents 100% increase on figures for Results Day last year and reflects changing attitudes to options away from university amongst young people.

With an estimated 180,000 students not getting into university this September, students were faced with the uncertainty of their future and used notgointouni.co.uk to help them understand the raft of opportunities that exist outside of traditional university.

Managing Director Spencer Mehlman was overwhelmed with the dramatic surge in visitors and enquiries and believes “there has definitely been a change in student’s perceptions towards university, its associated debt and its value to their career. Today’s students are keen to explore vocational qualifications and are starting to view them as a viable route to success”.

Apprenticeship specialists Notgoingtouni.co.uk are dedicated to helping young people make informed decisions about their future by showing the opportunities that exist outside of university. University is great for many people & UCAS has long existed to show students the courses available. Notgoingtouni.co.uk shows the other side and is often described as the ‘non-graduate UCAS’.

gripehounds.com is a new service for people with a complaint – a ‘gripe’ – against a company, organisation or individual. When satisfaction, compensation or just a response prove difficult to obtain, gripehounds will take up the case and work towards a successful conclusion.

Finding the right words for that all-important letter can sometimes present a problem, as can identifying who exactly is the right person to send it to. Gripehounds founder, Andrew Smillie, said “With many years experience in the communications industry, I have found that a well-constructed factual letter that gets straight to the point can bring fast results. It also needs to reach the person
with the ultimate authority for that fast result, which can require research and persistence”.

Being aware that costs to the individual are important, Gripehounds offer a free initial telephone consultation and then, if it is felt it would be beneficial to the client, an action plan would be outlined together with the fee. Andrew said, “By being cost-conscious and efficient, we can offer a satisfactory outcome to a complaint at a reasonable price”.

And what about John Smith and Robin Cook? William Hatchett’s pacey thriller, The New Labour papers, weaves a compelling fiction around the scientist’s departure and explores other convenient events associated with the rise to power of New Labour.

A decade before David Kelly’s death, on the 11th of May 1994, opposition leader, John Smith, made a fund-raising speech at the Park Lane Hotel for Labour followers. The following morning, he suffered a massive heart attack (the same fate that was to befall Robin Cook, eleven years later). Two months after John Smith’s death, Tony Blair became party leader. Even if one does not believe in a conspiracy, the event was a transition from dourness, decency and honesty to the slick social climbing, venality and spin doctoring of the Blair and Mandelson era – the dynasty of New Labour.

At the heart of Hatchett’s story, which opens with the death of a scientist clearly based on weapons expert David Kelly, is a fictitious minister, Emma Henderson. She is a sexually-voracious Blairite with a convincing, media-friendly exterior but a dark soul. Henderson slides her way to the top of the greasy pole, using the sadistic door staff of a thinly-disguised south London night club as her fixers and hit men.

When the book’s hero, Rick Gilliver, a down-at-heel, alcohol-dependent journalist, accidentally discovers her wrong doings, he embarks on a reluctant quest to bring her down.

In this convincing, close-to-real tale, Henderson is the author or a ‘warped, Machiavellian primer’, the New Labour papers. This document provides the spine of the story, providing a retrospective gloss on what Hatchett clearly sees as the deceptions and abuses of the New Labour years.

Other leading lights of Blair’s rise to power are depicted in this roman a clef. For example, future London Mayor Ken Livingstone features, in a dastardly sub-plot in which Henderson tries to have him killed on the Millennium Wheel.

The book is dripping with a thinly-disguised anger but, in a tradition of political satire that goes back to Dryden and Swift. has enough humour, pace and authorial control to make it a thoroughly enjoyable read.

Several recent books have taken a critical look at Tony Blair’s years at Number Ten. The New Labour papers, which is published on the Harper Collins authonomy website, is the latest and possibly angriest. It could not be more timely or acute, and is ideal to read on a laptop or mobile phone.

As stem cell research moves into new areas, initial results coming from Oxford University suggest that the humble skin cell could have enormous potential in the fight against a wide range of diseases ...

As stem cell research moves into new areas, initial results coming from Oxford University suggest that the humble skin cell could have enormous potential in the fight against a wide range of diseases and conditions, including spinal cord damage.

A team at Oxford University has announced their preliminary findings into specially manipulated skin cells known as induced pluripotent stem cells. These cells have been found to generate the brain cells that die off due to the onset of Parkinson’s Disease, and could potentially be used in the treatment of other neurological conditions, including damage to the spinal cord.

Negating the moral issues of stem cell research

While embryonic stem cells have been researched extensively, the development of stem cells from skin tissue negates many of the moral arguments against embryonic tissue being used. Sheila MacNeil, professor of tissue engineering at Sheffield University, has welcomed the research being carried out by Oxford University. She believes that there is the potential to harvest effective stem cells from a skin biopsy and that the ‘clever thing’ about adult stem cells is that they are less likely to be rejected as they are from the donor’s own body, unlike embryonic stem cells.

Skin cells have been used for some time in the treatment of burn victims, but this new research is exploring the full therapeutic potential for other conditions, including spinal cord damage. The use of skin cells in regenerative treatments could lead to the cells being used to ‘grow’ new spinal cord tissue that has a far greater chance of being accepted by the body and possibly opening up more effective treatments for spinal damage.

“This is a big step forward in the treatment of a whole range of conditions, including serious neurological damage as the result of accidents,” comments Matthew Dixon of serious accident litigation specialists Serious Law. “We deal with people who have suffered serious spinal injuries and know first hand how effective treatment can make a huge difference to the lives of both the victims and their families. Although we all know that a fully effective treatment for spinal cord injury is still years away, this research shows that stem cell technology has the capability to make a real difference without falling prey to the ethical arguments of stem cells taken from embryos,” he adds.

A new range of treatments

Professor MacNeil is also optimistic about the skin cells’ role in treating spinal cord injuries, commenting that skin cells can be turned into nerve cells, “which could be a way to expand nerve cells to treat spinal cord injuries”.

While the research is still in its early stages, preliminary results are promising and have prompted other teams to take a fresh look at the humble skin cell. “Your skin is the body’s largest organ, and has a remarkable ability to regenerate,” says Matthew Dixon of Serious Law. “We’re only just beginning to understand the potential of stem cell treatment, and with everyone carrying their own possible stem cell resource around with them every day, the use of skin cells across a wide range of treatments could be a major breakthrough in medical science,” he concludes.

Dataq Technologies have launched a low-cost aerial photography and survey service using state-of-the-art remote control UAVs which are efficient, quiet and safe to use in almost all situations.

Dataq Technologies Managing Director Dominic Blundell describes this new service as 'bringing the benefits of aerial surveys to a wider audience and with greater accuracy, detail and relevance than has previously been available'.

In addition to low cost, the small electrically powered UAVs can fly closer to buildings than full size aircraft and the client can watch the results on a live video downlink allowing them to direct the images taken.

Uses of the service include:

- Close up examination of the condition of structures

- Promotional photographs of property developments

- Archaeological land surveys

- Recording the sites of accidents such as serious fires or explosions

- Accessing difficult to reach structures

The drones used weigh less than one kilo and are electrically powered allowing them to be unobtrusive and safe for use in almost every situation. Dataq is licensed to operate UAVs by the Civil Aviation Authority and their drones can be used routinely up to 120 metres and much higher with individual permission from the CAA.

Dataq Technologies is a data acquisition company created through collaboration with the University of Warwick to provide innovative survey and data collection services. Areas of expertise include remote control aerial survey and photography services and using automatic data acquisition technologies such as RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) to track assets throughout supply chains.
