Indie musicians are everywhere now-a-days making it great for them but harder to find truly good artists. Garrett Morgan is one of those stand out greats. Garrett’s style of country is uniquely fresh yet comfortably true – kinda like your favorite jeans – his music fits just right and makes you never want to take it off your player.

Growing up around San Antonio, the classic Texas style, red dirt music is clearly deeply imbedded in his soul. Recently, on Twitter, Garrett stated “I have a deeply held belief that every song would be better with banjo in it.” He not only uses a little banjo in his music, but fiddle, mandolin, guitar and drums – topped off with clear lead vocals and extraordinary backup vocals -blending it all together to create songs you will want to hear over and over again. Kickstarter.com is an online fund raising site that is Crowdfunding based. Translation, you have a project you need funded, you post it on Kickstarter, and ask your fans - your "crowd" to help by pledging what they can to help out. You reach your preset goal, Kickstarter collects the money for you. You fall short, no money is collected. Simple.

Now fans (and people in general) are funny. They generally want something for their efforts. That is the beauty of Kickstarter. You can offer rewards for different dollar amounts of the pledges as a thank you. It makes Kickstarter a win win for both the band and the fans.

Success - a Musician's viewpoint

I have asked many artists - Just what it is you as wanting to achieve? How do you define success?
I was going to write about this - then ran across this essay from Jeb Hart - Guitarist with Danika Holmes. This says it all ....

A thought, A rant, a way of looking at things, call it what you will...

It the world of sports there are major leagues, minor leagues, college associations, intramural leagues, and games just for fun. To fit my personality, I think more in terms of flight... there being Astronauts, Jet Pilots, Commercial Airline Pilots, Sesna hobbyists, R/C controlled hobbyists, model airplane makes, and people who simply dream of flight.

Keep this in mind when you look at musicians... where are they in terms of commitment and goals? Hopefully, you would never say to your friend who plays intramural sports, "Loser, why don't you try harder so you can be the majors?" Right?

I have to remind Danika, and myself sometimes, that not everyone is competing at the same level, nor is everyone's goal the same. Many musicians are happy as hobbyists, or being big fish in small ponds. Nothing wrong with that...

To clarify the two points of thought that made me think about this is that 1) Many of my friends who are big "local" players sometimes get mad about how they are the big dogs in the city and I'm playing 4,000 miles from home, and 2) I find myself being frustrated by some bands immature attitudes and seemingly apathetic attitude towards perfecting their craft.

Once I stepped back and realized most of my friends are playing "intramural" music while Danika's current goals are more "Minor League" oriented (eventually to be Major League), it answered both of my questions/concerns. We have to appreciate that not everyone wants to tour. Not everyone is going to take this as seriously as all those of you who are reading this. You are playing in a league different from most of your perceived peer group.

That doesn't mean we have nothing to learn from them. Referring to the flight example that I had, look at vast difference between the doers and the dreamers. Many times it takes going all the way back to the beginning to open our eyes and see new ways of attaining goals. The music industry is changing, and sometimes (like radio play and major record label deals) the major leagues are playing by archaic, outdated rules.

Let's all remember what it was like when we first started playing music, the dreams we had, and everything we wanted to accomplish. Let's go out and play in the right league, whichever is best for each of us. Let's think as dreamers and rewrite rules where necessary to break into and explore new territory.

Rant done... It's 2:30am, if this doesn't make sense to you, welcome to my world. I often characterize what goes on in my head as the 1957 film 12 angry men, but with most of men having ADHD. Night!

WITH ROCK RIDGE MUSIC

Brooklyn-based and Chicago-born singer-songwriter Todd Carey has inked a management deal with Newark, NJ-based music services company Rock Ridge Music. Says Carey of the partnership: “I’ve been building a fire with my fans’ help, and it’s very exciting to have Rock Ridge Music take notice and step in to elevate what I’m already doing. I couldn’t be more optimistic about working with this amazing team.”

Says Rock Ridge Music President Jason Spiewak of the deal with Carey: “We at Rock Ridge Music are stoked to be working with Todd Carey and his team. Todd's charisma is contagious and together we will broaden his audience on tour, on the web, on the radio, and everywhere else fans are enjoying great pop music!”

Carey is planning to go into the studio to work on a new album this calendar year; even though he has 40 songs written already for possible inclusion on the album, he plans to continue writing during the recording process. “I’ve embraced the newer industry model and have put out an EP and singles since my last album came out,” says Carey. “But I’m looking forward to getting into the studio and working on a full album’s worth of material.” Already, he’s begun working with Lion’s Share, the production folks behind Andy Grammer’s Hot AC hit, “Keep Your Head Up.”

Carey’s most recent release, 2010’s “After The Morning After” EP, hit the Top 40 on iTunes’ Pop Chart and was produced by Mikal Blue (Colbie Caillat, Five for Fighting). Previously, he released three solo albums (“Elevate,” “Revolving World,” and “Watching Waiting” [which came out through Universal’s Fontana Distribution]) and an additional EP (“Whitefish Bay Sessions”). Carey is no stranger to touring and has criss-crossed the country repeatedly, playing over 250 shows in support of “After The Morning After.” He’s toured with and performed on stage with numerous artists including Jason Mraz, John Mayer, Marc Broussard, Keaton Simons and Matt Duke. Music from his “Watching Waiting” album was featured in the film “Palo Alto” and on MTV's “The Real World.” Billboard magazine called “Watching Waiting” “…custom-made for the top of the pop charts... with a witty edge.”

With the release of their debut album “High on the Hog,” on Sept 13th, these motorcycle riding, freedom-loving songwriters have turned their passion for the freedom and the open road into an album of Country-tinged, pure American rock n’ roll. The MeanStreet Riders were formed in 2008 by a group of Florida-based songwriters who shared a mutual passion for riding motorcycles and freedom. What started out as an adventurous ride through the southern United States, culminating at the ”Dragon” an 11-mile stretch of road with 318 curves on the Tennessee /North Carolina border on US Highway 129. Harley Girl says The MeanStreet Riders sound a lot like the Eagles. I also heard a little Molly Hatchet influence and there was a bluesy Allman Brothers feel too. I would recommend this CD as a travel enhancement for your next ride since the songs are very motorcycle and riding related. It would also be a great CD to add into your next party music rotation. After listening to the CD multiple times I found myself singing along.

Julie and her powerful voice has made it through to the Regional Finals and will now be performing at the live stages of Open Mic UK 2011 starting on October 1 at 8pm in the Hove Centre, Brighton.
Open Mic UK 2011 is the exciting national talent competition which searches for the UK's best singers, singer/songwriters, rappers and vocalists of all genres who perform either covers or original material.
One contestant who stood out from everyone else is local talent Julie Collins, now competing for a place in the National Final at the O2 in London and the chance to grab a break through recording contract.
Thousands of hopefuls entered nationwide and hundreds of auditionees queued patiently on the day for their turn to impress the judges, but it was Julie Collins that wowed the panel and has now been given an opportunity to prove that they are the best on the Mic in the region.
Chris Grayston head of A&R at Future Music comments, "We are searching for an act that not only has the live ability to impress an audience, industry judges and A&R associates, but an act that has the potential to become a professional recording artist. The standard was high last year and this year looks set to be even better".

Dry Riser of North London has done it again. Their latest single - Tangerine with its tangy slides on guitar, drip down into your soul vocals - Dry Riser takes the classic English Rock sound and delivers it in a fresh new way.

I have been a fan of this band since I was given the opportunity to review their debut CD - 2 Many Chiefs. (review found here) and have been, like many fans, waiting to see if they would stay true to that sound that screams "British Rock" . Upon hearing just the first few notes, I knew the answer, my mind immediately flashed back to the later Beatles, Sargent Pepper Era.

A good Google+ Profile a must for Musicians

Google profiles have been around for awhile, and has always carried some importance in online presence and branding. But with the addition of Google Plus to the crazy world of social media, the importance of a strong Google profile has taken a new meaning.

Google is the number one search. The term 'Google me' has become mainstream. When someone searches for you, they will find all the places you have been online, any comments you may have left on blogs etc, any pictures, videos you may have posted, and anywhere you have a spot on the web, from Facebook to twitter to, of course, Google. And Google, preserving their power of the web, will be showing the Google profiles prominently.
So, what constitutes a good profile?

Some tips:
Make it Personal
Google+ will be coming up with business accounts that can be used for bands too . Keep your profile YOU

Fill out as much as possible
Not saying you need to add your street address or phone number, but adding where you live (town), and have lived, your name, etc is a no brainer.

Fill out a little Intro
Tell people some of what makes you, you, and sure - include some of your music info. A short bio would work nicely. Use the editor and add links.

Occupation and Employment
If you work for a company, and prefer not to let world know where, leave blank. But if you are a musician THIS is where you make it known . Do not leave blank, or get all cutesy here. I recommend coming across as professional as possible.

Links
Anyone who uses the internet for business in any way needs to add as many links as you can. All the marketplaces are supported, along with the other social media hot spots, so again, a no brainer.

Add a profile picture
A Good one. again, if your business uses the web to reach the masses, you need a good picture or logo even. It should be reflective of your style. But, unless you sell costumes on the side, I don't recommend the one of you dressed as a poodle.

Now Google+ WILL frown upon you using it strictly to promo your music - it is a 'social site' .. so be sociable too. But with the integration of you tube videos and the use of "hangouts" you will find Google+ to be a very good spot to promote.

There is one spot I found that makes getting your own custom URL a breeze. Check out gplus.to Carefully pick your name. I recommend using YOUR name. Google+ is planning on business accounts (which could be used for your band) as well in the near future, so you will want to reserve your business name for it.

Twitter, FaceBook and Music - 7 tips for bands in Social Media

Lately, many musicians are finally waking up to social media. With facebook and Twitter offering integration with countless sites, they are becoming a strong and almost necessary set of tools in today's world of music. But, many are also lost or are becoming 'lazy' with their social media campaign.

While the integration is good - Twitter feeding Facebook, Facebook feeding Twitter, MySpace feeding both, Reverbnation feeding everywhere, I am seeing to many fail at the most important part - the SOCIAL end of Social Media. Although the ends and outs, the do's and don'ts have been covered time and time again, let me jump on this happy bandwagon and give my take on it.

DO integrate - yes, use the feeds from one to the other to the other . My Favorite is the Reverbnation feed. From Reverb, you can keep everyone everywhere up dated with your shows, and by sharing the player with Facebook, increase the number of plays you receive.
DON'T Neglect - Just because you are feeding Facebook from Twitter for example, don't think you do not have to pop in there. Try to personally visit each social site at least once a week.
DO Promote - Yes - the whole purpose of you spending your time on Twitter, etc is to expose your music, and to increase your fanbase, hence increasing sales, and crowds at your shows.
DON'T over Promote - Again, the whole purpose is to build a fanbase, nothing turns people off faster than a barrage of "look at me!"
DO be sociable - It is called social media for a reason - be sociable! - Chat with the people, thank them for mentioning you, sharing your song, and help out other musicians by propping them up and giving them some kudos too. THEY have fans, and no, you don't want to 'steal' fans, but sharing fans is only a win-win for all involved.
DON'T be rude - in ANY way. Keep it clean, keep it civil, keep it friendly.
DO be YOU - THIS is the most important one. Be YOU. Fans follow artists because they want to 'see' what they are like. Keep it real.

It is simple - relax - have fun - win fans. Just remember, what works in the club on a Saturday night with the drinking crowd is not going to wash for the Sunday morning coffee drinkers.

Be true to you - to quote George Michael's song - you gotta have Faith - faith in you.

No Such Thing as a Cute Drunk, Especially In A Band

You go to the store and the clerk obviously has been drinking. He makes mistakes on register, drops your soda, making it spew when you open it, and smashes the bag of chips you bought while bagging them. And this is not the first time either. Do you keep stopping there, or do you go a little further down the road to the next store?

Most of us would go on down the road, and wonder how the guy keeps his job. Most jobs do not allow such behavior. But there seems to be an exception to the rule, and it is the music business.

We have all seen it. The band drinking on stage, or taking turns leaving the stage, coming back just a little more happier than before. And many of us have seen bands that have gotten smashed – flubbing rifts, stumbling and forgetting words. How many times do you go to see that band that continually does it?
Yes, it is an 'accepted' habit among the bands. The venues allow it, and some even 'pay' the bands with food and drink. But does it make good business sense?

Bands and musicians need to wake up. Yes, your music IS a business. People pay good money to see you, whether they pay a cover charge, buy a ticket, or simply spend money of dinner and drinks, they are still paying. It is your job to give them their moneys worth. Venues need to wake up as well. Pay the bands in cash, not drinks. Do you allow your kitchen help or wait staff drink on the job? Why then, do you allow the band?

Many bands dream of 'making it big'. Well, making it involves hard work and having the “right person” see you perform. Every time you are on stage, no matter where you are, you never know if that “right person” is sitting there watching you. And if you think seeing you suck down a beer is going to get you a contract, think again.

All musicians need to treat every gig like it is an audition. Every member needs to be on their game at all times, from the support staff to the front-man. Front-men especially, for you carry the added responsibility of setting the image the band projects.

If you are happy to just play the local pub, then have a ball, get drunk and keep doing whatever it is you do, a year from now, you might still be there. But if you are a serious musician, and want more than that, then it is time you take the business seriously and treat it as such. Scouts are everywhere, and they are looking to invest in music, otherwise they would just by stock in Jim Beam or Budweiser.

Alice Avenue are a brand new trio from London to hit the music scene. A young band with a rich bluesy funk sound that is wonderfully displayed on their new single "See It Through".

Good News! This Tuesday, November 23, 2010 Vancouver is blessed with a night filled with the best in Acoustic music, Headlining Damien Cripps from Perth Australia.

Damien, the front man for the Damien Cripps Band, also is a much in demand solo musician in Australia, playing at some of the best spots throughout the country. He never fails to mesmerize the crowd with a collection of original songs , like the hot newly re-released "Angels In Darkness", the bluesy soulful "Meltdown" or the ever so popular "Pictures".

Joining Damien on this talent packed night is:
COLUMBIA, five guys from Vancouver, have created a big rock sound all of their own and are doing it the way they want playing shows from The Vogue in Vancouver all the way the The Kat Club on Sunset Strip in Los Angeles. Now the Bad News -

I am sadden to report that due to the complexity of the Visa system, and the class of Visa Damien Cripps has to secure in order to come to the USA, his much promoted shows set for December of 2010 have been postponed.

The professional standing that the United States Customs and Immigration Service sets for solo artists is extremely high. We are steadily working to meet them, and are convenient we will, it is just going to take a little more time than we have in order for the USCIS to review the material.. As all Americans know, our Government, especially the Immigration dept, moves slowly and is bureaucratically heavy.

THAT SAID, the tour is not 'cancelled' - just put on hold with Damien's sights set for next year.

I personally want to thank the scores of people whom helped us so much throughout this, to try to name you all would be impossible, but special thanks go out to those professionals in the Music field whom took the time to write the letters of recommendations for Damien. Not many know how quickly you all responded to the request. It was amazing and Thank You no where expresses what we feel in our hearts. And a special Thank You to the venues that worked with me in booking Damien. I am eternally grateful to you all, your understanding in this situation is wonderful, and not only touches my heart, but shows just how much you all have passion for music.

And of course, the biggest Thank You goes out to Mr. Damien Cripps. Your faith and trust in me is overwhelming. I am extremely proud to be part of your incredible team, and look forward to working along side of you for many years to come.

NAMM Foundation Announces Wanna Play Fund Grants for Instruments Available to Schools and Community Organizations to Expand or Reinstate Music Education Programs

Schools and Community Organizations have a unique opportunity to share the importance and pleasure of Music Education with funding from a grant made possible by the NAMM. In a join effort with top artists and Gov. Mike Huckabee, the funds have been raised to assist those serving the low income communities to further their music education programs as part of their core curriculum and to employ quality music teachers.

Downloads maybe hot, but CDs still offer value

Why buy a CD?? I will just download what songs I like, or maybe the whole album and be done. It is cheaper, and don't have the clutter of CDs everywhere.

True. Downloads are becoming the way more and more are collecting music. With i-tunes, Rhapsody, Amazon, and even Walmart offering almost every song under the sun for under a buck a pop, why would anyone ever buy a CD again?

There are more pros to owning the CD than you think. Besides the simple fact the sound is better, CDs are a tangable item. You can hold it, download into computer, most have awesome artwork, some are collectible, and a collection of CDs can really look nice displayed. Not to mention they have value.

Value? Yes. Not only can you resell if desired, but they can be covered under most insurance policies. No , happy downloaders, most insurance policies don't cover your downloads.

A carefully acquired digital music collection has no value if a home or apartment is burglarized or damaged according to most home insurance policies. In fact, just a quarter of home insurance policies in the UK even offer to cover digital music downloads, according to USwitch.com. Only 10% of policies cover downloads valued over $3200.00.

Think about it. One commenter on hypebot.com recommended backing up your downloads. Not a bad idea for all your data. Just make sure the backup in not just floating around in your house as well. A fire could destroy them both. There are many good online backup services now, or you can backup to an external harddrive and store it in a firebox. And no, your i-pod does not count as a 'backup'.

The bottom line is, although downloads are a quick convenient and affordable way to add to your music library, CDs are still a viable solution. And with many artists adding special bonuses such as free downloads and bonus tracks, you are still recieving a good bang for the buck.

Besides .... try to get an artist to autograph a download.

Proper Storage and Handling of Vinyl Records

The handling and storage of vinyl records can make the difference between having years of enjoyment to having material for a crafter to make a bowl. ( Yes, some are finding a second life as a bowl among other things!) Most of this is elementary information for the older vinyl junkies, but for the newcomer to wonderful world of vinyl, their maybe somethings you over look when storing or handling your records.
Handling
Handling a record involves the many of the same principles of handling CDs.

1. SLIDE the vinyl out of the sleeve taking care to not fingerprint the surface up. Sure you will get a few prints on it, but they can be wiped off. Hold by the edges and or label area as much as possiable.
2. PLACE it vinyl onto the turntable. Do not slap it on, drop it on, nor should you play 'fribee' with it and hope it lands on spindle.
3. CLEAN the playing surface. Gently wipe off or better yet, use a soft bristled brush or small vaccuum to clear dust from grooves. Be sure to clean stylus with a stylus brush.
4 GENTLY place the needle onto the vinyl. Dropping the needle can cause a dent that may cause a skip. Gently lift the arm up as well at the end of the record play.

STORAGE
1. NEVER Store your vinyl flat. Always store upright.
2. NEVER store one out of a sleeve. Replacment sleeves are available. I have been purchasing from Square Deal and have been very satified with the quailty and their service.
If the innersleeve is torn, or if it is one you are going to want to have, ie has lyrics, Bios, or awesome artwork, you may want to use a different sleeve to store your vinyl in.
(As a side note, I am amazed at the dealers that actually sell and ship records minus an innersleeve.)
3. When placing the record (in an innersleeve) back into the cover or jacket, place it in with the opening up. NOT with opening along the opening of the jacket. This will prevent the vinyl accidently sliding out. And will also protect it from dust.

4. The outer jacket can be just as important as the vinyl itself. They at Square Deal also carry outer sleeves to protect them from dust, etc. As a dealer, I include one with every purchase.
5. When storing, keep them away from direct sunlight, extreme heat, cold and dampness.

For storage, there are record crates and storage cases on the market that are stylish as well as functional. And be sure not to 'overstuff' the shelf, crate or case.

Everyone has known at least one person who just does not handle or store their records properly. That person may not realize just how fragile the records are. It is up to you, as a collector to pass on your knowledge.

Basic tips for musicians websites

You know you need to build some web presence for your band, and although you are on MySpace and FaceBook, you feel it is time for your own website. Good for you! Having a central locale to point fans, venues, media, and others to is a smart idea. From your own site, you can link all your other spots into, post your EPK., stream some tunes, and offer merchandise. You can design a layout to better reflect your style thus giving people a visual sense of what your music and band is all about. Just don’t over do it.

Too many bands set up a website and toss in every bell and whistle they find. Flash, apps, fancy graphics, streaming audio can slow down the load time of a site, causing people to say ‘Cya!’ before the front page opens.

Some basic rules of thumb should be followed when designing a website, and even if you have someone design it for you, if you follow the basics you will find it will retain your visitors attention and have them coming back for more.

Simple url - pick a simple url. If ‘bob smith.com’ is taken, try bobsmithband or bobsmithmusic or even just the initials ‘bsb.com.’

Drop the Flashy stuff - JavaScript that loads mini windows, flashy graphics not only slow down load time, they are annoying to many.

Turn off the auto play - everyone’s speakers are different, and the sound that is at a comfortable level on your computer maybe way to loud on someone else’s. Besides, it can slow down load time.

Supply a good navigation menu - be sure to keep your page titles direct. Name your Bio page ‘Bio’ ‘About the band’ etc , not ‘ Come into my lair’ You fans may think its cute, but the venue or booking agent you send may not.

Keep a color scheme - pick a color scheme and keep it all the way through. Colors that reflects your style of music works best. If your genre is Country, hot pink with neon green may not be the best choice. And speaking of color, it is:

A.) a good idea to use the same colors on your spots on MySpace, Facebook etc.
B.) Avoid the black background with colored font. A lighter background with dark font is easier the read. If you absolutely MUST have black background, use a very light colored font.

Keep pictures clean - Trust me, you will not impress the important people with those pictures of that wild party you went to. “What happened in Vegas needs to stay in Vegas.” The same goes for your blog posts.

Don’t over do it - PERIOD. - include your latest video, a few of your newest or best songs, a few pictures. You can link to your MySpace, Facebook, Reverbnation and other sites for your vistors to see more. This will also increase traffic to those sites. And don't forget to put the website link on those spots!

Keeping a website slick, simple and clean (in more ways than one) will provide an enjoyable experience for your fans while showing the booking agents etc that you and your band are true professionals

Bands - Heads up on Afton Live and the way they do business

Recently , Amity of If Not For Dreaming contacted me with the heads up on what is a shady company prying on the new bands. They contacted her via Reverbnation email. It was the poor grammar, misspelled words that red flagged it to her so I asked her for the email she received so I could look into this company myself.

The email is as followed:

i saw your prfile and seems cool.. i book afton shows in hartford and im thinkin youd fit well on shows i've got comin up- like maybe this one at webster on sept 10th?

i wanna exchange info if youre down and have a bunch of other options if that one wont work, get back w/ me at my email if youre interested and lets talk?

No link to the show nor the company, not even a hint about it. And the spelling and grammar does scream unprofessional. So, I went to Google and searched for Afton. Discovered it was called AftonLive. They have been around for sometime and do put together shows. BUT YOU the artist do the work of selling the house out. No this fact is not found on there website, but, to quote Mulder, “ the truth is out there” .

My next step was to Google AftonLive Scam .Try it. You will be amazed at the number of hits you get. After reading a few articles, blog posts, forum rants, one really stood out and I found it to be right on. Not only about this company but about how many companies and venues are ‘using’ musicians for free entertainment and profiting from it and the bands are allowing it to happen. Many are more than willing to play for free just to play.

It is well written account on the legality and ethics of companies such as this. As the Blog reads:

Is it illegal? Not really. Is it unethical and hurtful to the Music industry? You bet. But as PT Barnum said : “ There is a sucker born every minute” Artists, I urge you to do your homework, read every contract and take pride in your craft. Don’t sell your soul at the crossroads.
