Most people have heard of the 4 C's of Diamond Buying. It is common knowledge that all diamonds are graded for their cut, color, clarity and carat weight.

Sunday's Grammy awards lived up to all the glitz and glamour surrounding the event.

What really stood out was all of the white metal jewelry being worn. Platinum, white gold and silver replaced the traditional yellow gold settings of the stars' jewelry.

Diamonds, as always, were popular at the Grammys but there was a noticeable trend which favored white metal settings for the stones. Whether it was a diamond ring, necklace, earrings or bracelet, the stars opted for platinum, while gold and silver settings.

Katy Perry, Jennifer Hudson, Sara Bareillis and Gwyneth Paltrow were all seen wearing white metallic diamond jewelry.

Can you imagine paying $114,464 for a bicycle? When it's completely plated with 24 K gold and is embellished with 600 Swarovski crystals you can. There are only 10 of Aurumania's limited "crystal edition" bikes but they can be purchased and delivered anywhere in the world for $114,464.

The second most expensive bike sold in 2005 for $75,000 at the Lance Armstrong Foundation Gala. This "7-Diamond" bike commemorated Lance Armstrong's 7th victory in the Tour de France. The bike featured seven 1 ct. Gemesis man-made diamonds and 300 white diamonds.

Karats? Carats?

The terms "karat" and "carat" are thrown around a lot in the jewelry industry, but what do they really mean? Is there a difference?

The answer is Yes.

"Karat" (K, KT.) always refers to gold and "carat" (ct.) always describes a gemstone. But the differences don't stop there. "Karat" measures the purity of gold where "carat"measures the weight of a stone, regardless of its purity.

Pure gold, and gold which is traded in the market, is always 24 KT. However, when metals are added to the gold, the jewelry is no longer pure gold. The alloy formed will fall into the 10KT, 14KT or 18KT category.

Two gemstones with the same carat may not be the same size. It is crucial to remember that carat measures only the weight of the stone, not the size.

Thinking of proposing on Valentine's Day? Here are a few pointers and ideas to make sure your plans go smoothly...

Let your significant other know you are planning to spend time with them on February 14th. There's nothing worse than planning a marriage proposal and finding out they had other plans!

The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) announced that its “Four Cs of Diamond Quality” brochure is now available in ten different languages: English, Spanish, Italian, Thai, Korean, Japanese, traditional (or formal) Chinese, simplified Chinese, Hindi and Gujarati.

Blood Diamond Update

In the diamond-mining industry, a blood diamond (converted diamond, conflict diamond, hot diamond or war diamond) refers to a diamond mined in a war zone, usually in Africa, and sold to finance an insurgency, invading army’s war efforts, or a warlord’s activity.

However, the concept of a blood diamond was not popularized until the 2006 Leonardo DiCaprio movie, 'Blood Diamond'. The movie's vivid images and touching storyline hit the mined diamond industry hard - all of a sudden consumers wanted to know how much blood someone may have shed for their engagement ring. This resulted in diamond lobbyists needing to clear their name, and start cracking down on the blood diamond market.

But how far have these lobbyists and PR firms come?

In 2004, Amnesty International and Global Witness conducted a survey of diamond jewelers to see if they were living up to their promises to stop the trade in conflict diamonds. It was discovered that while some efforts have been made, many retailers were not doing enough: Only 18% of stores surveyed could provide a copy of their conflict diamond policy and 22% said they had no policy at all.

A team of Mexican scientists were experimenting with ways to create lab diamonds from common organic solutions when they stumbled upon tequila.

As it turns out, tequila has just the right amount of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen needed to make diamonds. Cheap, white tequila returned fantastic results: tiny, spherical diamonds.

This discovery could greatly improve the industrial production of hard, heat-resistant diamond films. Large scale production will begin in 2011.

One of the most popular jewelry trends right now is the diamond pave ring.

The "Monster Mash" Lives on in Spirit

Bobby Pickett, the voice behind the Halloween classic "Monster Mash," passed away in April of 2007 but his spirit lives on eternally on his daughter's finger.

Pickett discussed what would happen to his remains with his daughter before he passed away. She mentioned a new method of creating high quality diamonds with his carbon remains. Pickett loved the idea and now he remains immortalized as a diamond on his daughter's ring.

Researchers in Chicago may have found another reason for diamond studding but it doesn't have anything to do with bling.

Studded nano-diamonds embedded in flexible microfilm may be the answer to localized chemotherapy and cancer care.

Small fragments of diamonds are set in a plastic "cling film" like material and placed on the body like a patch. The tiny diamonds allow chemotherapy medicine to be released slowly over time and reduces the need for chemotherapy injections and the drastic side effects that come along with modern cancer care.
