My mother experienced the pangs of childbirth with me one stormy October night. Her pains were the just punishment for her disgressions with the Laird of the land, Malcolm MacDuff and the child was right to be born a girl. Unfortunately the girl was healthy, so on the next day she was baptised to receive the name Ishbeal Ailidh Catriona Eloise. Upon the day after this, a messenger arrived to pronounce the decision of the laird to recognise the bastard as his child, my name being MacDuff henceforth.

Thus began my early life in the royal boroughs of Ainster (Anstruther) and Elie with the Elder family. My mothers merchant family brought me up with their own children and childrens children, instructing me in numbers and letters to assure a good marriage amongst their own class and to be a decoration and aid to my prospective husband.

My fathers family brought me into their fold for the twelve days of Christmas every year upon the insistence of my sire of whom it is said that he had truly loved my mother but was discouraged from marrying her as she was of a different station and would not have brought any advantages to the family. My father has always treated me with the utmost civility and even warmth, lavishing gifts on his daughter on her name-day and christmas. His wife and mother treated me with a cold disdain, bordering on cruelty on occasion. The only member of the family who did not seem to have the same prejudices towards me was my brother, with whom I still like to correspond to this day.

My mothers father had a business partner in Inverness and upon hearing of his granddaughter and her connections and upon seeing my miniature he was determined to make me his wife. My father gave his consent to so advantageous a match and I dutifully married him on candlemas, aged 19 and became the second wife of James Urquhart and the hope for him to finally have offspring after the barrenness of his first wife.
He has never treated me with anything but the respect due to his wife, never have I heard harsh words spoken from his mouth that were directed at me. But alas, little did I know that he was becoming more ill with every day.
Our union was to remain childless and never should I hear the laughter of children in our house unless it was my nieces and nephews from Fife.
By michaelmas, 2 years into our marriage my husband was but a shadow of his former self. He had suffered sweats and fevers all throughout our marriage, but by that time he had to keep to his bed with strong pains only to be held at bay by the strongest draughts from the apothecary. Many a night did I lie awake listening to the screams in his chamber. Many more nights I spent by his side, wiping the sweat from his brow, listening to his laboured breath and gentle admonishment that I should seek rest rather than tend to him. Sometimes his admonishment was not so gentle, his pain made him forget himself. But I was a dutiful wife and stayed with him until the delirious and painful end, during which he expelled his final breath with an expression of relief that I shall never forget.

For a few years I kept the acater's shop in Inverness open through harsh times but in the end I was forced to sell the premises and move back south, having to trespass on my brother's kindness. Almost all of the money I received through the sale of my husband's business went into satisfying my debtors and although richer in experience, I am where I was before. My brother lets me stay in one of the lodgings he owns on the Royal Mile and I am able to assist my mothers family as a witness, scribe and partner in their transactions in the capital.

Basics of Role Playing

Cross Posted

Let's start with the basics.

Canon vs. Non-Canon
"A canon, in terms of a fictional universe, is a body of material that is considered to be "genuine" or "official".

On RD, all RP within the universe of Renaissance Dynasties as the subject, is considered canon. If it is written in an RP thread. It happened. No take-backs, no later edits to change anything, it just exists.

If you find later that something was done incorrectly, so sorry, but you must let your character handle that. Going on MSN or in the shoutbox to "fix" or "argue out an issue" makes the issue non-canonical. Meaning if you make edits or changes after discussing the outcomes outside of an RP post---it didn't happen.

For example:

Currently, the Lord High Steward and the Earl marshal of England are having a bit of a power struggle. They could discuss the situation and make any changes necessary after the fact, but that doesn't take much creativity at all, does it? And how would the reader know what took place to justify the changes? They wouldn't, and thus may lose track of the story, or be confused, or any other such reaction.

So what to do? They must meet (or send a message, or throw things, etc) in RP and decide their outcome by RP'ing it out. That is the ONLY way it can be official plot.

Of course I am NOT saying that players cannot confer and discuss RP situations with each other- that would be silly. The point I am attempting to make it that nothing can be "assumed" in RP. If your character wants something to exist, your character must make it exist. Be that an item, a person, a title, a meal, a situation, a conversation, etc.

"Pics or it didn't happen" applies here. We just tweaked it to "Posts or it didn't happen"

As for Non-Canonical RP:

If you wish to rp as your RD characters elsewhere, be that on MSN, chat, whatever- you of course are free to do so. But any outcome of that outside RP has no bearing or effect on RD itself. It becomes non-canonical, and cannot be applied here.

IC and OOC and the rest of the alphabet:

IC means In-Character. When a forum is designated IC, you leave your real life personas at the door.

If a thread is designated IC and is spammed by Out Of Character (OOC) posts, they will be removed by moderators. If a discussion (or argument) arises in an IC area, it will be removed to an OOC discussion area. Simple, right? You'd be amazed at how often people can get their IC and OOC personas confused.

If I want to say something as Carla, I will generally do so by clarifying it as such- whereas when I am making comments as Malachia, it will be done so in IC RP areas.

I do have two accounts, as does Jessica, but sometimes we again, make mistakes, and forget to switch, or it is not convenient at the time. If there is a question of if we are speaking as characters or our real selves, we will clarify it in our posts.

OOC areas:

Some forums have a designated label of being OOC. No IC or RP is to take place there. These are areas where we can take off our masks and be ourselves. Please don't ruin that. If OOC area content is found to be used for or against another player in IC RP areas, consequences will follow, and the post will be removed.

The Shoutbox is an OOC area. RP is not to be played out there, though we have no issue with comments one makes in character, as long as the comments are taken as casual, and not used in RP. The shoutbox is Not Canon.

OTHER OOC AREAS:
Official RD Facebook
