With Captain America: Brave New World, the MCU teased the possibility of an Avengers team in the future with Sam Wilson’s Captain America in charge. However, it looks like a team beat him to it when some of the misfit antiheroes and former villains of the MCU teamed up to form the Thunderbolts (written as Thunderbolts*).

The asterisk has a meaning that is explained at the end of the movie.

Thunderbolts* Breakdown

The Thunderbolts walking down the street

Many long-time MCU fans felt that this movie was nothing more than a placeholder for more important films coming down the line, specifically Fantastic Four and the next two Avengers movies. However, that isn’t the case, as this movie will tie into both of those films and the future of the next few years of MCU movies.

Thunderbolts starts with Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) sending her black ops assassins in to kill each other. These people include Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), John Walker (Wyatt Russell), Taskmaster (Olga Kurylenko), and Ghost (Hannah John-Kamen). For those who need a refresher:

Yelena Belova – Black Widow’s “sister.” Previously appeared in Black Widow and Hawkeye on Disney+. Her relationship with Valentina is seen at the end of Black Widow.

John Walker – The former Captain America. Previously appeared in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Valentina brought him on board at the end of that series.

Taskmaster – The villain from Black Widow. Her father used and abused her, and she finally helped Yelena and Widow win in that movie.

Ghost – The villain from Ant-Man and the Wasp who is a former S.H.I.E.L.D. black ops agent.

They show up at one of Valentina’s back ops sites, try to kill each other, and not everyone makes it out alive. However, most of them manage to escape by working together and even save a guy they find there named Bob. The problem is that Valentina’s team experimented on Bob, giving him superhuman powers that eclipse even Superman. He is the Marvel Comics character Sentry, and he is (sort of) the villain of this film.

Thunderbolts Movie Review

Yelena Belova in Thunderbolts

Thunderbolts is very similar to Guardians of the Galaxy.

Just like in the characters in that movie, these characters are not good guys. They are mostly losers, and they mostly know it. However, that is also what makes them a perfect team. They have a true hero to lead them in The Winter Soldier and a veteran there to help Yelena hold it together in Red Guardian.

Winter Soldier is the most popular character here. He received loud cheers when he first appeared in this film. The same thing happened in Captain America: Brave New World. However, this is Yelena Belova’s movie. Similar to how Peter Quill’s story of loss (his mother and home) and finding his new family ties together Guardians of the Galaxy, Yelena’s story does the same thing here. Sentry’s story also parallels it, as he shares similar feelings to Yelena of hopelessness for the future.

Florence Pugh has been one of the stars of the post-End Game MCU. She was great in Black Widow, had incredible character development in Hawkeye, and was the heart and soul of Thunderbolts. Her character’s journey, as someone lost who needed something, helped drive every single character in this movie to become better people themselves. That’s impressive for someone who was initially unlikable like John Walker and as underdeveloped as Ghost.

The Thunderbolts‘s ending was also something different for a Marvel movie. There was a giant fight scene, but that wasn’t what made this climax great. Instead, what happened after the Thunderbolts got beat up in that fight made the ending great. The movie’s ending was a psychological battle, one of the most emotionally charged in the MCU to date. These antiheroes, none of whom really had any significant powers, had to find a way to win, and they did it as a team and as a family, showing that love could save the world. That might rub some toxic MCU fans wrong, but it was very much the perfect ending for this movie.

There was also a post-credit scene (the second one) that heads into the future, not only connecting this movie to the next phase of the MCU but also hinting at Captain America’s future.

Thunderbolts is another solid hit for the MCU and might be the best movie for the superhero company since Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3 (not including Deadpool & Wolverine).

The Underworld franchise would be a guilty pleasure of mine if I believed in guilty pleasures. However, I don’t believe in guilty pleasures. If you like something, you should never feel guilty about it. So, with that said, the Underworld franchise is a lot of fun. Who honestly doesn’t love vampires with guns fighting werewolves? In 2016, the fifth movie in the franchise, Underworld: Blood Wars, was released. It continues the story of Selene, a former Death Dealer with enemies on both sides of the war.

Series creator Len Wiseman has been teasing new movies in the franchise, a reboot, or a TV series, even without Kate Beckinsale returning as Selene. However, nothing has been confirmed since the release of the last film. With no new Underworld movies in the pipeline, here is a look at my ranking of Underworld movies, from worst to first.

5. Underworld: Awakening (2012)

Underworld: Awakening, Screen Gems

Easily, the worst movie in the franchise is Underworld: Awakening. That doesn’t mean that it isn’t worth watching, just that it has a lot of problems. Selene and Michael were captured in the prologue of this movie, and when it officially starts, someone helps her escape. When she begins to see through someone else’s eyes and thinks it’s Michael, she sets off to find him. However, it isn’t Michael but a young girl named Eve, who is Selene’s daughter and a hybrid.

What makes this movie not work is that the entire setup is that the human population of the world has discovered the existence of vampires and lycans. This is thanks to the death of Corvinus in Underworld: Evolution. He spent his life trying to conceal the existence of the monsters to protect their own. Because it wasn’t vampires vs. werewolves, it felt lackluster until a twist towards the end. The big problem is that the twist came, and the movie ended very quickly with little to no tension. This is the only movie where I didn’t feel any fear for the safety of the heroes.

Plus, there was no explanation for why they were no longer in Europe. However, it makes sense that they would send them to America when they were captured).

4. Underworld: Blood Wars (2016)

Underworld: Blood Wars, Screen Gems

I liked Underworld: Blood Wars, and honestly, Awakening was the only movie I didn’t care for. However, I had a significant problem with how this movie handled Michael. In the first two movies, a lot was done to show how special Michael was, and then he became essential to find in the fourth movie. However, here he was just dismissed as if he meant nothing outside of a central plot point for the movie’s villain.

Speaking of the villain, I liked Marius because he was so much like Lucian, but he did enough to show that Lucian was – at heart – a good person and werewolf. At the same time, Marius was a disciplinarian and was a total bad guy in this movie. I feel it tried to do a little too much, especially with the secondary villain, Semira.

Kate Beckinsale Talks ‘Underworld: Blood Wars’

While I didn’t like the way the movie dismissed Michael, I do like David – the “last pure blood.” Most of all, I loved the vampires fighting werewolves again. Underworld: Blood Wars also brought back many elements from the original movie, with references to Viktor and the elders, which I appreciated.

3. Underworld: Evolution (2006)

Underworld: Evolution, Screen Gems

Ask me on any given day, and this might flip-flop with Rise of the Lycans. This is an immediate follow-up to the first movie and begins immediately after the first one ends. Selene just killed Viktor, and Marcus rose from his tomb to exact vengeance on the vampires in his coven that ruined everything and wreaked havoc on the world. Marcus, the first vampire, also heads out to find and rescue his brother William, the first werewolf, and it is up to Selene and Michael to stop them.

What I loved most about Underworld: Evolution was the world-building. I loved learning about the first immortal Corvinus, as well as much of the history of the wars and why humans didn’t know about vampires and werewolves despite having gunfights in public places. Then, there was the final battle, with Selene and Michael taking on Marcus and William, along with a host of Corvinus’ soldiers. This battle was awesome.

2. Rise of the Lycans (2009)

Underworld: Rise of the Lycans, Screen Gems

I know a lot of people dismissed Rise of the Lycans because it didn’t involve Selene. I don’t mind because I liked Lucian more than Selene in that first movie. Michael Sheen is fantastic in this role as the leader of the werewolves, and we see here why he was a good and loyal leader despite all the killing going on around him. This was truly a Romeo and Juliet story, with Lucian falling in love with Sonja, Viktor’s daughter, and their passion sparking the start of the war.

What drags this movie down are the special effects, which are far below the level of any other film in the franchise. Honestly, the werewolves in this movie looked terrible. However, this has one of the best stories of the entire Underworld franchise.

1. Underworld (2003)

Underworld: Screen Gems

The first Underworld movie is still the best. There is little setup here because the entire film starts with Selene and her fellow Death Dealers heading into a giant gun battle with werewolves in a subway tunnel. Honestly, who went into the movie expecting werewolves and vampires fighting and expected to see giant gun battles? This just kicked off a thrill ride that had some minor problems but was still an enjoyable experience.

The highlight was easily Michael Sheen as Lucian, a fantastic character who was the leader of the werewolves and turned out to be more sympathetic than any vampire in Selene’s coven. As for Selene, I still insist that she was too naïve and made too many bad decisions throughout the franchise. If she is supposed to be one of the best Death Dealers, she should have had a lot more common sense than she does. Instead, she allows things to happen to her instead of leading the plot with her actions.

However, that is a minor complaint. This is only slightly about the story – which was solid when it comes to the setup and backstory leading to these events – and is mostly about gun fights, werewolves transforming and biting people’s heads off, and just fantastic action from start to finish. I still watch Underworld to this day, anytime it’s on, and I enjoy it as much as I did when I first saw it years ago.

A Minecraft Movie isn’t made for everyone. Kids will enthusiastically cheer countless moments while adults might look at each other in confusion. However, that is okay. This movie is for the fans, and they deserve something to call their own. Adults who have endlessly complained online about the kids loving this new video game movie should understand it isn’t always about them.

With that said, A Minecraft Movie is unabashedly dumb. However, that is part of its charm. The film knows what it is and what it is trying to do. This movie wants to be ridiculous in every way and succeeds wildly at that endeavor.

What Is A Minecraft Movie About?

Jack Black plays Steve, the character players control in Minecraft video games. He has wanted to mine since childhood and finally gets the chance when he grows up. While mining, Steve finds the Orb of Dominance and the Warth Crystal and enters the Overworld. This needs no explanation for the kids who play Minecraft. However, the movie’s opening features a lot of exposition to explain to the clueless parents what is happening.

The evil Malgosha imprisons Steve in the Nether to get the crystal. She is a queen who wants to send the world into darkness. As a child, Malgosha was humiliated at a talent show and decided that all creativity and art should be destroyed. Steve sends his beloved dog Dennis into the real world to hide the Orb and Crystal from Malgosha’s reach.

When people from the real world find them and enter the Overworld, it endangers the entire universe. That’s the main story. The people entering the Overworld include Garrett (Jason Momoa), a former video game legend who is facing hard times; Henry (Sebastian Hansen), a creative high schooler who is bullied; Natalie (Emma Myers), Henry’s older sister who is caring for him after their mom’s death; and Dawn (Danielle Brooks), a real estate agent who loves animals.

Is A Minecraft Movie Worth Your Time?

Minecraft is a quest movie, with the four outsiders teaming up with Steve to find a way to keep Malgosha from getting the orb and crystal. It also has a ton of Easter eggs from the games, and most people who have never played the games will recognize these Easter eggs by the cheering of the kids in the audience. Love it or hate it, this is a movie made for kids to interact with, and it succeeds on every level in that aspect.

There are a few problems with the film along the way. Some of the actors are mostly trying to go further over the top than the one before, with Jason Momoa and Jack Black constantly trying to out-stupid each other. If anything, Emma is the eyes of the adults in the audience, as she says that nothing makes sense. There is also a slight problem with the film showing Malgosha as someone who had a tragic childhood but does not offer her a chance at redemption; instead, it relies on making a joke about her defeat.

However, while the story is basic and much of the plot borders on stupidity, fans can expect a lot of laughs, some heartfelt moments (and Easter eggs), and amazing visuals.

Jared Hess, the man behind Napoleon Dynamite and Nacho Libre, directed A Mineceraft Movie, so anyone familiar with his work should know what to expect. It is not a great movie by any means, but it is the movie that Minecraft fans want to see, and in that regard, it is a winner.

Captain America: Brave New World isn’t as bad as some fans might want you to believe.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has been struggling lately. It has little to do with the quality of the movies and Disney+ TV shows. The problem is the fanbase. It seems fans want every movie connected and have little time for standalone features. When Marvel tried to do something unique and different, fans rebelled. When a story wasn’t exactly what fans wanted, they complained and bashed its quality.

Don’t even get me started on people who hate anything with a woman hero (The Marvels) or anything with a hero who isn’t white (Captain America: Brave New World). Marvel isn’t dropping the ball here. The fans are ruining everything with their ridiculous complaints. That isn’t to say everything is great. There are problems with the recent MCU output (and Secret Invasion is the worst culprit). Captain America: Brave New World also isn’t perfect.

But it is a solid action espionage movie that follows the same path as the previous Captain America movies with Steve Rogers.

Captain America: Brave New World Review

Captain America: Brave New World follows Sam Wilson taking over the mantle of Captain America in the Disney+ series Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Don’t think you must watch every Disney+ show to get the movies. That is simply a non-truth a lot of people online like to throw out to complain about the streaming shows. Just know this. Steve Rogers gave Sam the shield at the end of Avengers: Endgame. Sam was reluctant to accept the role until the end of Falcon and the Winter Soldier.

In Brave New World, fans meet Joaquin Torres (Danny Ramirez), the man who is taking over as Falcon, and Isaiah Bradley (Carl Lumbly). Both were introduced in Falcon and the Winter Soldier, but all you need to know is told in this movie. Joaquin is the new Falcon (his first time taking on the wings). Isaiah is a former super-soldier serum experiment that the United States government betrayed.

Also, Harrison Ford has taken on the role of General Thunderbolt Ross (the late William Hurt from Captain America: Civil War). He is now the United States President. To understand how he got to this point, it all comes from an old movie. The Leader is a villain created in The Incredible Hulk but never seen until now. Once again, it isn’t essential to know much about him other than what is told in this movie.

The Leader is trying to manipulate things to start a war between the United States and the world for control of the adamantium found in the body of the dead Celestial (from Eternals – once again, it is not essential to know more than this movie explains). It is up to Captain America and Falcon to stop The Leader’s plans before World War II starts.

Does Captain America: Brave New World Work?

There are a few complaints about Captain America: Brave New World. Ignore the complaints about Sam Wilson being a Black Captain America and the ones from people who want Steve Rogers back. Anyone who can’t get over their own racism or move on to a new character in the role is not paying attention to the actual movie anyway.

However, there are complaints worth examining. They come primarily from this movie being savaged before it was released. The film was shot, and then Marvel decided to go in and change things. This wasn’t a minor reshoot. Instead, Marvel changed much of the story and eliminated several things from the film. This includes the Serpeant Society, of which only Giancarlo Esposito’s SIdewinder remained. Copperhead had one fight early on and never appeared again. This is also why WWE star Seth Rollins didn’t appear in the film (he played Diamondback).

That resulted in the movie feeling like a patchwork story, which it was. Things from the original film had to fit in with scenes from the new version, and it felt disjointed at points. This hurt the entire Red Hulk story, too, which was the main selling point of this film. However, as a movie, it was a good story with some excellent action set pieces.

Just like Winter Soldier, this was an espionage movie. However, it never comes close to the brilliance of that earlier movie. It follows the path of Falcon and the Winter Soldier, showing how a Black man, Sam Wilson, struggles to fit into the role of Captain America. As a man who cares about the people (he was a social worker who helped veterans before becoming a superhero), he does not blindly represent America. Instead, he represents the country’s people.

Many people also hated that, but that says more about them than it does about any movie.

What Works Best In Captain America: Brave New World?

The best part of the movie, and what works so well, is Thaddeus Ross and his rise to the presidency and eventual fate. Ross did a lot of bad things in his life. He wanted to destroy Hulk because he felt that Hulk was a threat to his daughter, Betty. He lost his relationship with Betty because of his obsession. Ross moved up the ranks in politics and became a proponent of the Sokovia Akords, which made the original Captain America a villain and sent heroes into hiding, which aided Thanos in his attack on Earth.

When he became President of the United States, it seemed he could do more harm. However, he planned to do good and eventually win back his daughter’s love. When he became Red Hulk, it was the pinnacle of his frustration with not overcoming his past. This was almost more of a story of Ross finally coming to terms with his sins and taking responsibility for his crimes over the years. That story was beautifully told.

However, the fact is that this is a Captain America movie that doesn’t focus enough on Cap’s story. I loved what they did to wrap up Isaiah Bradley’s story, and Anthony Mackie is perfect as Sam Wilson, bringing what made him such a popular Marvel Comics character to the big screen. However, when he is only another character in his own movie, it hurts the story a little bit.

If things were more tightly structured, this would have been a great movie and story to tell. As is, things are a bit disjointed, and Captain America: Brave New World is still a good movie, but one that could have been better

Sony has struggled with its Marvel output since they made a deal with the MCU on Spider-Man. This deal allows the MCU to use Spider-Man. However, it also says Sony can’t use him in movies other than those co-produced with the MCU. However, Sony still wants to make Spider-Man movies without the main hero.

This has worked with only one attempt, and that was with Venom (see our review of Venom here). While Venom: Let There Be Carnage was also successful, and a third Venom movie comes out later in 2024, the rest of Sony’s attempts at Spider-Man adjacent movies have flopped. Morbius might be one of the worst superhero movies made in the last decade. Other movies like Madame Web and Kraven met with long delays, and the first of those has finally come out.

Madame Web has many problems. However, is it really as bad as many critics and fans have made it out to be?

Madame Web Review

Madame Web stars Dakota Johnson as Cassandra Webb. She is a paramedic who works alongside her partner and close friend, Ben Parker (Adam Scott). Yes, this is Uncle Ben. However, the movie is not set up as a period piece, so it doesn’t make sense how it ties into the Spider-Man universe. What makes even less sense is that Ben’s sister-in-law, Mary Parker, is pregnant — with Peter Parker.

The film features a seemingly immortal villain named Ezekiel Sims. Years ago, he killed Cassandra’s mother to steal mythical spiders that allowed him to live an extended life with the powers of a spider. However, when he sees his future, a death at the hands of three young girls, he sets out to kill them before they can gain the powers fate has in store for them and kill him.

These girls are Julia Cornwall (Sydney Sweeney), Anya Corazon (Isabela Merced), and Mattie Franking (Celeste O’Connor). Now, I want to take a small break here and complain about the comic continuity (although it shouldn’t factor into the quality of this movie). Dakota Johnson as Madame Web makes sense because when Peter Parker meets her, she is an older woman (and it would happen over 20 years after the events of this movie).

However, Anya and Mattie specifically are teen heroes when Spider-Man is already a hero in the comics. Julia becomes the second Spider-Woman (and Madame Web in the future). In this timeline, these three teens would be in their late 30s when Peter becomes Spider-Man. How Sony expected this to work is puzzling and likely can only be described as “multiverse.”

What Works In Madame Web?

With that nerdy explanation out of the way, the movie sees Cassandra use her precog powers to determine when bad things will happen to keep the girls alive until they can finally beat Ezekiel. That has some fun scenes where she sees the bad things happening. Unfortunately, it removes much of the tension from the movie.

Now, Madame Web isn’t as bad as some critics have made it seem. It falls way short of many superhero movies, but it is miles better than Morbius, at least. What makes the film work is the chemistry between Anya, Mattie, and Jessica, although none of them have powers in this film and are only there for Cassandra to save. As for Cassandra, she is easily the weakest character in the movie other than Ezekiel, who is mostly a generic, boring villain.

It was clear this was supposed to be the start of this branch of the Sony franchise. However, since Vulture already fought Spider-Man, and both Morbius and Venom exist here, there is no way it could have fit in. All that is left is releasing the third Venom movie and Kraven before Sony is rumored to be rebooting everything. That might be for the better. Madame Web was not as bad as people claimed, but it was never going to work and will mostly be forgotten when the next Spider-Man movie comes out in the MCU.

Jason Statham opens 2024 with a new action movie called The Beekeeper that sees him seeking revenge against a faceless and destructive organization. However, when the path of vengeance leads to the most important of people, he finds the odds stacked against him. However, as expected, it isn’t anything this action hero can’t handle.

Here is a look at our The Beekeeper review.

The Beekeeper Review

Jason Statham Fights For The Country’s Most Vulnerable

If The Beekeeper is anything, it is a mostly brainless action movie, and that is something that Jason Statham has mastered over his career. In this case, there is a small bit of setup to show why Statham wants to kill people, and then the movie just lets him loose to exact his vengeance. Statham is Adam Clay, who lives as a beekeeper, renting space in a barn from a retired school teacher named Eloise (Phylicia Rashad). After a small introduction of Clay as a beekeeper and Eloise as the “only person who ever took care of him,” the unthinkable happens.

A phishing scam hits Eloise as scammers get her to call in when her computer gets a “virus.” However, when she gives them her information, including passwords, they drain all the money from her bank accounts and credit cards and even steal over a million dollars from a charity she runs. Before Clay can get back to her house that night for dinner, she has died by suicide. Clay meets her daughter at the end of a gun. Agent Verona Parker is an FBI Agent and she learns soon that Clay didn’t kill her mother and then learns her mother took her own life after the phishing scam.

This leads to two things happening. Clay sets out to bring down the men who caused Eloise’s death, while Agent Parker sets out to stop him because she believes in doing things by the law and letting the courts handle it. Needless to say, Clay is who gets his way a lot more than Agent Parker.

After those scenes, the rest of the movie is a simple revenge action story. There is no need to think about what is happening; the fun comes in the action choreography. David Ayer (Suicide Squad, End of Watch) directed the movie, so fans of his should know what to expect. The action is gratuitous and fast-paced and Statham finds all sorts of creative ways to kill people. There are moments of cringe-worthy violence and the movie never holds back.

“The rest of the movie is a simple revenge action story.”

The plot itself is pretty thin. Clay is a retired member of a covert black ops organization called the Beekeepers, who have been set up to operate outside the law to keep the “balance” of the nation’s hive intact when things threaten to throw it off balance. By the last stretch of the movie, the revenge plot shows that Clay has a huge target – someone whose son used the most vulnerable in society to gain the country’s highest position.

The end plays out how anyone might have expected, and Clay will likely disappear until a sequel calls him back.

The Beekeeper: Final Analysis

The biggest problem with The Beekeeper is that the story has high ideals that it wants to reach. However, it is nothing more than a mostly brainless action fest. The idea of Clay fighting for the disenfranchised – and especially the most vulnerable – is a good idea in today’s world. However, that is all mostly forgotten. The movie mostly cares just about breaking bones and killing both bad people and mercenaries sent to protect them.

There is some great acting on display here, though. Jason Statham is Jason Statham and people know what to expect. He has mostly perfected this role. Emmy Daver-Lampman does mostly fine in her role as Agent Parker. However, she isn’t given much time to show who she is other than an FBI Agent who is angry. Josh Hutcherson has proven here that he can be a smarmy Millennial villain. He has come a long way from his time as Peeta in The Hunger Games. Finally, Jeremy Irons, Phylicia Rashad, and Minnie Driver are all here in mostly throwaway roles.

The truth is that if you love Jason Statham’s action movies, you will love this movie. Don’t expect a good story, but stay to enjoy the broken bones and bloody aftermath of his rampage. The Beekeeper delivers what it promises.

In 2018, The Meg was a surprise hit monster movie. In what could have been just another B-level Jason Statham action movie, Jon Turtltaub created a fun movie that saw Statham battle a giant prehistoric megalodon released from the depths of the ocean. While it didn’t receive great critical reviews, it still made $530 million at the box office and proved that critics are not always right.

For my part, I loved the first Meg movie. In my The Meg review, I wrote, “Don’t expect the next Jaws. Expect the next Lake Placid but with a 65-foot prehistoric shark in a no-holds-barred match with Jason Statham. In that area, it is a rousing success.“

That made it exciting to hear that a sequel was coming. The first Meg was based on the novel by Steve Alten and the sequel was called Meg 2: The Trench, which was also the name of the sequel novel. Just like the novel, the movie sequel was based on a baby Megalodon raised in captivity. As expected, things do not go well when anyone tries to keep a monster as a pet.

The movie does make some changes from the book and, sadly, it makes for a lesser movie. The sequel book was a lot like the original movie, with Man vs Monster and Jonas and the humans battling to stop the Megalodons from killing countless people by reaching populated waterways. Instead, Meg: The Trench spends most of its running time having Jonas and his allies battle human enemies. This takes the focus off what should have been spotlighted – the three Megalodons, a bunch of Snappers, and a Kraken.

Honestly, that last sentence shows what would have made this an incredible movie that even trumped the first Meg. What was disappointing was that new director Ben Wheatley decided to focus on a group of mercenaries and a traitor who betrays Mac and the team now led by Jiuming, Suyin’s brother who is now running Mana One since his sister died. The movie never sees it important enough to explain how Suyin died – only that Jonas is now the legal guardian/parent of Meiying (who is still played by Shuya Sophia Cai).

This group is led by an evil billionaire who just wants to ravage the trench to make money, and the mercenaries are mostly nameless goons there for Jonas and his friends to eliminate – or at least the ones that aren’t killed by the monsters. By the time Jonas battles the three Megolodons and Kraken, the battle is a lot less interesting and just flies by. There are no great plans or attempts to figure out how to beat the monsters. Instead, they just go in with explosives and attack them head-on in one climactic battle.

The only part of the movie that matters is the final battle. Jonas opened the movie attacking people polluting the oceans and this is not the character from the first movie that fans fell in love with. Really, the only person who makes it in this movie anywhere similar to the characters from the first movie is Mac, who is still great with Cliff Curtis back a second time. Meiying is also a wonderful character. Jonas is still fun to watch in action, but this is a very different movie from the original – and that is not a good thing.

Anyone who wanted to see a monster movie similar to The Meg won’t get that with The Trench. That is a huge disappointment. I wanted more of the same and got something very different and lesser as a result.

The Flash offered up a fun final take for the DCU that Zack Snyder built and filled it with Flash Easter eggs. This meant that director Andrés Muschietti could have some fun at the same time. Since The Flash was all about creating a version of the Flashpoint storyline, this movie could change the entire DCU, while also paying homage to the past DC properties. To do so, there were a ton of great cameos in the movie from characters in both DC Comics and past DC properties.

Here is a look at every DC character who appeared in The Flash movie.

It would be silly to ignore Barry Allen here. However, there were actually more Flashes than just the DCU Barry Allen. When he tried to fix his past, he ended up in another timeline where he met that world’s Barry Allen. He helped him get his powers, which meant there were two Flashes running around. There was also a moment later in the movie where they met an older version of that alternate Barry Allen, who was still trying to fix his past. That is three Barry Allens in one Flash movie. Sadly, there was no Grant Gustin Flash Easter egg in the movie.

DCU’s Justice League

At the start of the movie, Ben Affleck got one last ride as Batman, as he was chasing bad guys while Flash was saving people at a hospital. Affleck’s Bruce was also there to talk to Barry and warn him against time travel. Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman showed up at the end of that fight as well. Superman showed up in a news broadcast saving people at a volcano. Aquaman showed up in the post-credits, completely drunk. Cyborg was the only member who never appeared as a Flash Easter egg.

Iris West

Iris West showed up as an old friend of Barry’s from college. She is now a reporter and has been covering his dad’s appeal. The two also shared a moment where she thought she saw him recently and he denied it, which might be a wink at a Zack Snyder’s Justice League Flash Easter egg, where he saved Iris from getting hit by a car.

General Zod

Michael Shannon was back as General Zod after his role in Man of Steel. However, in this situation, he was not there for Superman, since Kal-El never made it to Earth in this timeline. He also wasn’t going to lose this time around.

Batman (Michael Keaton)

One of the biggest selling points of the movie was seeing Michael Keaton back as Batman. This really wasn’t the Batman from the Tim Burton movies, but was instead a Batman who had retired after Gotham City became a peaceful, law-abiding town. However, he was still a very smart Batman and still a great hero, even after the years had passed him by.

Supergirl

As for Supergirl, she was very different in this movie. She wasn’t the pure character fans got used to in the TV series on The CW. Instead, she had been captured when she was young and was held captive away from the sun until Flash saved her in this movie. She didn’t seem to care about humanity, but let Barry Allen’s kindness influence her. She was there to protect her cousin Kal-El, but he never arrived and she was meant to stop General Zod or die trying.

The Speed Force Flash Easter eggs

When Barry Allen was going through the Speed Force trying to change the past, he ended up watching universes everywhere exploding, imploding, and otherwise ceasing to exist. It was here that audiences got to see some of the best Flash Easter eggs of the movie. Christopher Reeve and Helen Slater were both together, reuniting the 1980s versions of the movie characters. Geroge Reeves’s Superman was shown in a black and white photo. Nicolas Cage’s Superman from the never-made Tim Burton Superman Lives movie even made an appearance in the exact form he was meant to appear in that movie.

Adam West’s Batman appeared from the classic Batman TV show. There was also an image of the classic Batman from the 1940s serials that showed up as well. Jay Garrick’s version of Flash appeared in the Speed Force (it was Teddy Sears from The Flash TV series). It was a huge moment for DC fans.

Batman (George Clooney)

The lesson that Barry Allen learned was not to change the past because it could break the future. He changed the past anyway one more time to help free his dad from prison after all those years. However, while his actions seemed to have no consequences, they had one that he never saw coming. When Bruce Wayne showed back up to see him after his dad’s court case, it was no longer Ben Affleck. It was George Clooney (from Batman & Robin) in the last major Flash Easter egg, meaning Barry officially wiped Ben Affleck’s Batman out of existence in his world.
