An exclusive and serene beach hideaway where spoiling and pampering is the norm.

Eskaya Beach Resort & Spa nestles amid 16 hectares of lush tropical gardens on Panglao Island, Bohol, Philippines. The resort is made up of 15 private villas and a superb spa, which is why it is the place for indulgent privacy and seclusion.

The name “Eskaya” refers to the only known indigenous people of Bohol, Philippines. It is in Panglao Island, which is at the southernmost tip of Bohol. It is located halfway through Panglao along its coast facing the Bohol Sea.

The atmosphere is incredibly relaxed with crisp, cool villas, breathtaking sea views and discrete but attentive staff. Feel the gentle sea breeze as you languish in your private whirlpool and plan where to have dinner; by the infinity pool, on the beach with a personal butler or in the privacy of your villa.

Architecture of the buildings is decidedly Filipino with a splash of modern amenities. The thatched villas, or “balai” in the dialect, are single-detached. These are built with sturdy construction materials, but the ample use of indigenous materials like bamboo, cogon, and wood for finishing is highly evident.

United States Virgin Islands

noreply@blogger.com (Renewable and Sustainable Information Center) — Thu, 25 Nov 2010 17:00:00 +0800

Virgin Islands of the United States (commonly called the United States Virgin Islands) is a group of islands in the Caribbean that are an insular area of the United States. The islands are geographically part of the Virgin Islands archipelago and are located in the Leeward Islands of the Lesser Antilles.
The U.S. Virgin Islands consist of the main islands of Saint Croix, Saint John and Saint Thomas, along with the much smaller but historically distinct Water Island, and many other surrounding minor islands. The main islands have nicknames often used by locals: "Twin City" (St. Croix), "Rock City" (St. Thomas) and "Love City" (St. John).

White Cliffs of Dover England

noreply@blogger.com (Renewable and Sustainable Information Center) — Wed, 24 Nov 2010 09:43:00 +0800

The white cliffs of Dover are cliffs which form part of the British coastline facing the Strait of Dover and France. The cliff face, which reaches up to 350 feet high, composites of pure white calcium carbonate.

The cliffs have great symbolic value for Britain because they face towards Continental Europe across the narrowest part of the English Channel, where invasions have historically threatened and against which the cliffs form a symbolic guard. Because crossing at Dover was the primary route to the continent before air travel, the white line of cliffs also formed the first or last sight of the UK for travellers.

Panoramic Photo of London

noreply@blogger.com (Renewable and Sustainable Information Center) — Sun, 21 Nov 2010 15:09:00 +0800

A newly published 360-degree image of London takes the crown as the largest, highest-resolution panoramic photo in the world. The image of London has a total resolution of 80 gigapixels, or 80 billion pixels. If printed at normal photographic resolution, would be 115 feet long and 56 feet high. From this vantage point - 36 stories up in the air - an astonishing number of landmarks, houses, skyscrapers, shops, offices, and streets are visible.

Previous attempts at world record gigapixels include a 26-gigapixel image of Paris, a 70-gigapixel image of Budapest, a 26-gigapixel image of Dresden, and Martin's previous record holder from 2009, an 18-gigapixel spherical image of Prague.

Taiwan Skyscraper - Futuristic Solar Skyscraper

noreply@blogger.com (Renewable and Sustainable Information Center) — Sun, 21 Nov 2010 14:35:00 +0800

The Taiwan Tower Competition is a recent design competition that sought proposals for an iconic new tower to serve as a landmark and a symbol of Taiwan´s spirit.

Over 230 proposals from 25 different countries were submitted, and the Taiwan Tower from Dorin Stefan Birou Arhitectura in Romania was selected as the winner.

Inspired by science fiction, trees and leaves, the tall spire provides office and museum space in the lower third, while the upper levels serve as an observation tower.

Zeppelin-like elevators serve as observation decks to carry visitors up to the top of the tower for stunning views of the city.

The tower's small footprint maximizes the urban green space surrounding it.

The office space and museum take up the lower levels. They have 360 degree views and operable windows to encourage cross ventilation.

At the top, visitors can exit the observation elevators to a sky deck for a more relaxed view of the city below

Although very futuristic by design, the tower was inspired by trees, leaves and other traditional Taiwanese symbols.

The lower levels include offices for the Taichung City Government, leisure and recreational spaces, retail and educational centers, and the new Museum of Taichung City Development.

The observation elevators are constructed out of a lightweight material like PTFE that is inflated with helium.

A vertical-axis wind turbine sits in the core of the tower and photovoltaic panels cover the outside to generate power.

The tower also includes geothermal heat pumps to help reduce the energy demand of heating and cooling the building.

The 390 meter-tall structure is designed to stand tall above the city and provide a destination for both residents and visitors of Taipei.

This ultra-futuristic solar skyscraper by Romanian firm Dorin Stefan Birou Arhitectura was recently crowned the winner of the Taiwan Tower Competition. The 390-meter tower is designed to serve as an observation deck, office tower, museum, and urban park. The out-of-this-world skyscraper seems almost too far-fetched to be real -- it even includes helium blimp elevators, a facade covered in photovoltaic panels, vertical axis wind turbines and a whole slew of sustainable strategies.

Dorin Stefan Birou Arhitectura collaborated with Mihai Bogdan CRACIUN architect from the USA as well as upgrade.studio to design the iconic tower for Taipei. The project was inspired by the leaf, the shape of the island of Taiwan, the money tree, and other Taiwanese symbols. Eight zeppelin-like elevators serve as observation decks for the tower and run on a track positioned vertically in a strong electro‐magnetic field. The floating observatories will be constructed out of lightweight materials including PTFE, and the balloon is filled with helium. Each deck can carry from 50 to 80 people up to the top for stunning views of the city.

The lower 85 meters of the tower provide space for a museum and offices, while the upper portion of the tower houses vertical axis wind turbines and a facade covered in photovoltaic powers for renewable energy generation. Geothermal heat pumps help reduce the energy needed to heat and cool the facility, while the small building footprint encourages cross ventilation and the tower’s height creates a stack chimney effect. Fiber optic cables bring natural light into the museum, and the photovoltaics produce energy for an electromagnetic field that provides heating for the floating observatories.

Although the proposed tower does feature an impressive array of green building strategies, a small building footprint, and lots of green open space, we are very curious to see if this becomes the final design.

Renewable Energy using Fusion Power: Stars on Earth with £2.2billion

noreply@blogger.com (Renewable and Sustainable Information Center) — Thu, 18 Nov 2010 09:51:00 +0800

The 'miniature star on earth' will become the world's first sustainable fusion reactor

192 lasers beams at the centre of the reactor will be fired up and aimed them at a glass target containing tritium and deuterium gas (The holes in the chamber which is 10 metres in diameter and covered in 30 cm thick concrete permits the 192 laser beams to enter the chamber.)

The temperature at the centre of the reactor can reach six million degrees Fahrenheit (For a direct comparison, the temperature at the centre of the sun is 27 million degrees Fahrenheit)

Experts predict that reactor could be operational by 2020 and that by 2050 a quarter of U.S. energy could be supplied by fusion power

The reactor could be a miniature sun on earth providing energy for thousands of people when it is working as a power station in 2020

The National Ignition Facility (NIF) in Livermore California, scientists are aiming to build the world's first sustainable fusion reactor by 'creating a miniature star on Earth'.

The process is known as conducting inertial confinement fusion (ICF) and when the reactor eventually goes live it will generate unprecedented temperatures and pressures in the target materials which are held in a tiny glass ball.

The temperatures inside the chamber will be more than 100 million degrees and create pressures more than 100 billion times Earth's atmospheric pressure.

Fusion versus Fision
Unlike with fission power which is utilised at nuclear power stations and has seen accidents such as the 1986 Chernobyl disaster, fusion power is safe and relatively green.

Although fusion is a nuclear process, it also differs from the fission process in that there is no radioactive by-product from the fusion reaction only helium gas and a neutron

Fusion energy is very promising as a long-term future energy source, as the fuels required to generate it are relatively abundant on Earth and the creation of energy is safe and friendly to the environment.

Deuterium is extracted from seawater, and tritium is derived from the metal lithium, a common element in soil.

One gallon of seawater would provide the equivalent energy of 300 gallons petrol, and fuel from 50 cups of water contains the energy equivalent of two tons of coal.

A fusion power plant would be carbon free, as well as produce considerably lower amounts and less difficult-to-store radioactive byproducts than current nuclear power plants.

Also, there would be no danger of a runaway reaction or core ''meltdown'' in a fusion power plant.

Consequently, fusion energy would be beneficial to both the environment and the economy.

Fusion Concept
Current nuclear power plants, which use fission, or the splitting of atoms, to produce energy, have been pumping out electric power for more than 50 years.

But achieving nuclear fusion burn and gain has not yet been demonstrated to be viable for energy production.

For fusion burn and gain to occur, a special fuel consisting of the hydrogen isotopes deuterium and tritium must first 'ignite'.

In the 1970's, scientists began experimenting with powerful laser beams to compress and heat the hydrogen isotopes to the point of fusion, a technique called inertial confinement fusion, or ICF.

The rapid heating caused by the laser "driver" makes the outer layer of the target explode.

In keeping with Isaac Newton's Third Law (for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction), the remaining portion of the target is driven inwards in a rocket-like implosion, causing compression of the fuel inside the capsule and the formation of a shock wave, which further heats the fuel in the very centre and results in a self-sustaining burn known as ignition.

Nemesis: Wind-Powered Electric Sport Car Build by Ecotricity Reaches Top Speed 170mph or 273.53 km/h

noreply@blogger.com (Renewable and Sustainable Information Center) — Sun, 14 Nov 2010 20:26:00 +0800

The Nemesis is the result of nearly two years’ hard work by an ‘A-team’ of ex-motorsport engineers, with the brief from Ecotricity founder and MD Dale Vince to “blow the socks off Jeremy Clarkson and smash the stereotype of electric cars”.

The result is awesome: faster than a V12 Ferrari, 0-100mph in 8.5 seconds and a top speed of 170mph. All powered entirely from the wind. Or to be more precise by green electricity produced by Ecotricity’s windmills, delivered by the grid.

The ultimate in sustainability – a car that’s fast, great to look at and fabulous to drive – all with zero emissions. Just one small part of Ecotricity’s big vision for a Green Britain.

# Faster than a V12 Ferrari, the Nemesis has done 0-100mph in 8.5 seconds and can reach 170mph.

# It is powered entirely by 100% green electricity made by Ecotricity’s UK network of 51 windmills.

# It runs for between 100-150 miles between charges depending on driving style

# It can be charged from empty in under 2 hours from its fast charger or 8-9 hours from a regular mains supply, both via hidden retractable cable systems built into the rear of the car

# A second-hand Lotus was bought on eBay and rebuilt from the ground. The engineers lengthened the chassis by 90mm, lowered and shifted the centre of gravity forward, fitted a cluster of 96 lithium-ion polymer cells, two brushless motors and a completely new transmission
