Vehicle Overview

The five-seat Forte is Kia's entry in the compact-car segment, and it's available with a choice of four-cylinder engines and comes standard with numerous safety features. It's sold as a sedan, a four-door hatchback and a coupe, which Kia calls the Koup. Competitors include the Honda Civic, Ford Focus and Toyota Corolla.

Dollar Thrifty takes itself off the market

Car rental company Dollar Thrifty Automotive Group Inc. is taking itself off the market after failing to get any acceptable takeover proposals from Hertz or anybody else.

Dollar Thrifty's stock fell $1.25, or 2.1 percent, to $59.15 in midday trading Tuesday.
Not too long ago Dollar Thrifty found itself being pursued by both Hertz Global Holdings Inc. and Avis Budget Group Inc. But Avis took itself out of the bidding in mid-September, leaving Hertz as the lone bidder.

Dollar Thrifty said Tuesday that it had given suitors until Monday to submit their "best and final" offers. It said in August that it needed a bid that would pass antitrust muster.
But the rental car company from Tulsa, Okla., said it did not receive any proposals meeting this criterion, so it will continue to run as a stand-alone company.

"The purpose of setting a deadline for submission of bids was to bring clarity to the next steps for the company. As we said all along, continuing uncertainty is in no one's interest," Dollar Thrifty President and CEO Scott Thompson said in a statement.

Thompson said Hertz's offer is still open and that he received a call from Hertz CEO Mark Frissora four days ago to reiterate the company's commitment to a potential buyout.
"The fact remains that they have not made a proposal that addresses our board's requirements," Thompson said.

A call to Hertz for comment was not immediately returned. Its shares rose 26 cents, or 2.6 percent, to $10.34 in midday trading.

Hertz had offered to buy Dollar Thrifty for $57.60 in cash and 0.8546 shares of Hertz stock for each Dollar Thrifty share. That was a sweetening of a previous offer made by the Park Ridge, N.J.-based company last year that was rejected by Dollar Thrifty shareholders. Dollar Thrifty had also advised its shareholders against accepting Hertz' most recent offer.

Avis originally made an informal offer of $45.79 per share in cash and 0.6543 shares of Avis for Dollar Thrifty. It held off on making a formal offer, because Dollar Thrifty said it wanted to work on getting antitrust approval for the deal first.

Hertz and Avis wound up in a tug-of-war over Dollar Thrifty for more than a year, but Avis dropped its bid in September due to current market conditions.

At the time, the Hertz bid was worth about $2.1 billion while the Avis offer was worth about $1.67 billion based on Dollar Thrifty's 31.3 million outstanding shares.

A little over a week ago Avis, which is based in Parsippany, N.J. announced that it completed its $1 billion acquisition of Avis Europe PLC.

On Tuesday, Dollar Thrifty also maintained its third-quarter rental revenue forecast on Tuesday, which is expected to be up 2 percent. The company will report its third-quarter results on Nov. 1.
In addition, Dollar Thrifty plans to start a previously announced repurchase program, buying back up to $400 million of its common stock. It expects to buy back up to $100 million per quarter over the next four quarters.

The festival of Eid, known in Singapore as Hari Raya Puasa or Hari Raya Aidil Fitri is a major Muslim holiday and is gazetted as a national holiday in Singapore.

In Singapore, Hari Raya Puasa is the most prominent of all Muslim and Malays festivals as it is a time for new clothes, decorated houses and exchange of invitations between friends and relatives. Hence, it is fitting that Hari Raya is Malay for the “grand day” or “celebration day”.

Typically, Muslims get up early on the day and have a small breakfast, usually consisting of dates. This is followed by congregational prayers at mosques or other open areas. After prayers and a short sermon, it is customary to embrace the people sitting on either side and greeting them. They also have a supplication, after prayers and the sermon, seeking forgiveness, help and mercy for all living things across the world.

It is not all celebrations though, as it is also a time of forgiveness within the Muslim community and to strengthen ties between family and friends. House visits usually begin at the parents’ home before moving on to relatives and subsequently, friends. Younger generations will ask their elders for forgiveness for the wrongs committed in the past year. It is an especially enjoyable time for children as adults give them token sums of money in green packets.

Muslims also don traditional cultural outfits on the day. The male outfit is a collarless long or short sleeve shirt with traditional embroidery, paired with a sarong or trousers and headwear called the songkok. For women, the baju kurung consists of a loose fitting blouse and long skirt with the same traditional embroidery.

In Singapore, food is a huge, integral part of any celebration. Likewise, Muslims will have a lavish spread of food on their dining tables during Hari Raya Aidilfitri. Specialties include beef rending (a spicy dish dry curry), ketupat (rice cake) and lontong (rice cake immersed in coconut gravy). These main dishes would be complemented by snacks like cookies, cakes and pineapple tarts.

What to do for tourist?
In the days leading to the Hari Raya festival, you can go to the Arab St and Paya Lebar (Pasar Geylang area) to see how the preparation for breaking fast is like and also the wide array of food sold. Arab St has a variety of Moroccon/Turkish food so you can make reservations for dinner and see how it is like to participate in the “buka puasa” or breaking fast ritual.

Some other places that you can go is the Asian Civilisation Museum and Peranakan Museum to see something distinctively different from other museums in Asia. You can also go to the National Museum and have a walk around Little India to soak in the atmosphere.

Muslims in Malaysia celebrate Eid like other Muslims throughout the world. The term “Hari Raya” literally means “Day of Celebration”. On this day, Muslims all over the world offer a special prayer in the morning and later visit their relatives and friends. The young will seek forgiveness from elders for their past misconduct.

The main greeting used by Muslims in Singapore and Malaysia is “Selamat Hari Raya” which means “Happy Eid” or “Happy Celebration” in Malay. Another greeting is “Maaf Zahir dan Batin” which translates loosely to “I seek forgiveness (from you) physically and spiritually”, for Hari Raya is a time to reconcile and renew relationships with others.

During the Muslim month of Ramadan leading up to Hari Raya, it is mandatory for Muslims to fast from dawn to dusk. All Muslims except the young, old or infirm must fast. Many Muslims also abstain from pleasures such as smoking cigarettes and sexual activities during the daylight of the fasting month.

Widely, markets, or ‘Ramadan bazaars’ are held in many areas around the country, where all sorts of food and kuih — traditional Malay delicacies — are sold for breaking fast or buka puasa.

In Singapore, which has the largest Muslim population in the world, Eid is known as Hari Raya Idul Fitri (or more informally as Lebaran). It is a national holiday, often last for as long as two weeks, with the exact date determined by local lunar observation. Hari Raya Idul Fitri is usually a public holiday for 2 days, another 2-3 days of company given holidays, and about 5 days of forced-leave.

In Singapore, the first day of Lebaran 2011 is likely to fall on Tuesday, 30 August 2011. Please note Muslim festivals are timed according to local sightings of various phases of the moon and thus this Hari Raya date given is approximation.

Aside from the day-off, in Singapore Idul Fitri has a legally mandated salary bonus for all employees, known as Tunjangan Hari Raya as enforced by Indonesia’s Department of Labour, Employment and Society. The mandated amount of this salary bonus differs by provinces.

Idul Fitri is the biggest holiday in Singapore. Business for clothes and festive necessities are having their best month during the Ramadan with shopping malls and bazaars are filled with people days ahead of Idul Fiti, causing a distinctive festive atmosphere throughout the country and traffic mayhem. In contrast, the first few weeks after the celebration is the quietest weeks for business and road traffic.

Many banks, government and private offices are closed for the duration of the Idul festivities, known collectively as the Lebaran.

The Chinese Year of the Dragon

New Year is a special time in China. It is a time when the festive spirit is high and there are all kinds of celebrations going on. As has been the ancient tradition of the country they have animal signs associated with the change of time. There are twelve animals that are repeated after every twelve years. So the year of the dragon returns with all its might and power after every twelve years.

The Chinese New Year of the dragon represents great power. As it is the image of the dragon is taken as a symbol of auspicious power and anger if you will. The anger of the Chinese dragon is somehow always justified hence it has to do with correcting the erring. In that sense the angry dragon is not exactly evil. Rather the symbol is meant to be inspiring for society.

They say the streets have rights upon you. If you hang around on the streets and see some evil you then it is upon you to stop it with your hands if you have the might. If you don’t then at least make an attempt to stop it with your tongue. And if you cannot even do that then at least in your heart know that the act is evil and this is a very low level of faith.

The image of the angry dragon seeks to suppress the wrong doers. It does not represent wrong doing. Rather quite the opposite. The best of deeds is to avoid evil and discourage it while engaging in good deeds and encouraging them. Hence the Chinese New Year of the Dragon is all about brining about a revolution through peaceful and festive means.

The Peugeot 206CC, or Coupe Cabriolet, is, as first glance, a slightly perculiar looking car. It clearly has the standard 206 front end, but the back end is a little strange, and while being unique and fairly streamlined, it is not the most attractive rear end I have ever seen. There is of course a good reason for its shape...

The 206CCs main selling point is that it is both a hard-topped coupe, and a topless convertable, and without the annoyance of having a removable, ugly-looking roof. The secret is simple, the roof automatically folds itself up and is stored in the boot. Magic! The procedure takes around 30 seconds, and requires you to simply undo some fasteners and hit a button.

The second beatuiful thing about this car is the price. The only rival for this car in terms of the roof is the Mercedes SLK, which while a little more luxurious, it retails for around £35,000, while the Peugeot starts at under £16,000, and the 2.0 version is only a grand more. There is no wonder there is a 6 month waiting list for this car.

The 206CC comes in all the usual Peugeot colours, but in my opinion, it looks best in silver or electric blue. There are a number of interior colours and schemes to come from, including full leathers, part leather, and all clothe. I personally think that bright blue or red leather looks a little bit too much, but each to their own.

The inside of the car is pretty much the same at the GTI. Its got a lot of plastic, but a few nice chrome effects such as the pedals and gear stick, which just add a little something to it. I would definately recommend any buyers of this car to get as many of the internal extras as possible, to really make this car feel like a sports car. One aspect that makes it feel like a sports car anyway is the back seat area, if you can call it that. There is, in theory, a back seat for 2 extra passengers, but it is really little more than an extra bit of luggage space. Passengers would find t
he experience most uncomfortable for journeys longer than a few minutes. However, the SLK is only a two seater car itself. Another space issue is found in the boot. A number of reviews of this car have critisized the amount of boot space when the roof is folded into the boot. However, given the fact that you can use the back seats for luggage, and the fact that the boot is actually extremely spacious when the roof is up, I dont think this is a problem at all.

With the 2 litre engine, the 206CC is clearly a drivers car, not just a pretty toy. It is capable of 0-60 in around 9 seconds I believe, which is more than fast enough for most, and the acceleration is excellent in all gears.

All convertibles suffer from problems due to the requirements of a convertible, not least the lack of a permanent roof. The main concern is usually the amount of noise and vibrations. The sound level is pretty good, but the car is not great at all in terms of vibrations. When Channel 4s Driven reviewed this car, it scored one of the lowest marks I have ever seen for drive quality due to the vibrations.

Overall, I like this car. It has been available for a fair few months, and is still massively in demand. It is pretty much impossible to pick one up second hand yet, and any that are available are pretty much at new car prices anyway. I guess a good indication of how good a total package the car is will come in the next few months, when we see if owners of the car are giving them up within the first year or two of ownership, or whether they are holding onto them for dear life.

Despite the negative reviews of some aspects of this car, it still looks great, it has the ingenius roof, and comes at an amazing price. I think Peugeut are going to find demand stays high for this car for a very long time.

Higher COEs drive up car rentals, sharing too.

SINGAPORE - Higher COE prices are driving people to look for cheaper and more flexible options. Among them - car rentals and car sharing.

The higher COE has been good for Popular Rent A Car, with business jumping by about 20 per cent from a month ago, said its general manager, Mr Ho Kok Kee.

Some of its new customers were very likely to include those who had shelved their plans to buy a car, following the jump in COE prices.

However, despite the expected increase in demand for hire cars during the Chinese New Year Car Rental (CNY) period, the company has put its expansion plans on hold.

Acquiring new cars with the higher COEs would raise the company's capital and operating costs by 30 to 40 per cent, Mr Ho said. A third of its cars has already been booked for the CNY holidays. Mr Ho expects all its cars to be booked eventually, as in previous years.

Kah Motor is another company that's not adding new cars to its rental fleet despite better business.

For the festive season, all of its small cars have been booked.

Its head of Rental and Leasing, Mr Choong Tat Soon, said unlike last year, more are also renting for longer periods - in terms of weeks, even for a year.

Some want to rent a car for some months until COEs dip and new cars become affordable again.

More people are now open to the concept of car-sharing, with industry players reporting a 15-20 per cent increase in membership applications in the last two months.

Some households with two cars were giving up one and sharing the other - to be used by the wife to "go for shopping or to pick up the children", said Mr Choong.

With higher value for used cars, trade-ins are seeing a 70-per-cent increase compared to two or three years ago, said the honorary secretary of the Singapore Vehicle Traders Association, Mr Raymond Tang.

Age Requirement for Renting a Car: It depends from firm to firm. The usual age requirement stated is at least 21 years old. This is the age whereby one is legally fit to sign a valid contract. However, one can still find car rental firms that rents out cars to drivers as young as 18 years old. There are also firms that rents out to individuals above 25 years old. 1. Start with the Exterior
