In the days before the perfect storm of the economic downturn, people used to ask about getting out of a car lease in order to move up to a pricier, newer model. Today, however everyone is looking for a way to free up cash. And, next to your mortgage payments, your monthly car payment can be the biggest expense item in your budget.

So naturally people who have been hard hit by the current economic cycle would be looking for ways to get out of their car lease. And until recently, this would've been an arduous and sometimes humiliating experience-especially if they were looking to downsize their lease.

Here are some savings that you can look forward to by getting out of an unaffordable lease.

The monthly payments

One of the greatest advantages of getting out of an expensive car lease is that it frees up cash every month. And the larger your monthly car payment is, the greater your potential savings will be. As a result getting out of an expensive car lease will allow you to pay down credit card debt with your monthly savings.

Furthermore, if you are indeed driving a very expensive car-or even a moderately expensive car-you can bet that the value of the car is reflected in the insurance that you pay every month. So getting out of an expensive car lease has the added advantage of getting out of paying higher insurance premiums.

Of course, only you can determine how much cash you will free up on a monthly basis by getting out of your car lease.

Fuel and maintenance

It's also important to remember that larger, more expensive cars generally have the added disadvantage of being both less fuel-efficient and more costly to maintain.

As we all know, the price of gas is largely determined by supply and demand. And in a world where the known supply of oil and gas is only going down; and the demand for both oil and gas-not only from North America but also from places like China and India-is going up, it is a dead certainty that fuel costs will continue to rise at the current ridiculous rates.

Furthermore, my experience with foreign and luxury automobiles is that there is always something that will go wrong. Whether it is the on-board computer. Or a finicky transmission or timing belt. Or that continuously rattling from the passengers side. There is always some apparent minor irritation that needs investigation. And of course once your car hits the mechanics garage, what is minor suddenly becomes major. And on expensive foreign and luxury models these costs tend to be magnified.

Of course, you'll need to look at your own situation to determine how much this applies to you. But regardless of your situation, I'd encourage you to look at your car lease. In today's troubled economy you may find it to your advantage to get out of your current car lease.

Get Out of Your Lease the Cheap and Easy Way

Or Save Big by Assuming a Short-Term Lease

Signing a lease contract is a little like getting married: If you suddenly decide you want out, you could get taken to the cleaners. Returning your vehicle to the dealer before the end of the lease contract means you'll pay early termination fees and penalties — nasty ones. Your dealer may suggest you trade in your leased car for a new one, but he will probably add penalties to the price of your new vehicle. Either option will cost you plenty, often thousands of dollars.

So, are you stuck in what may be a bad marriage? Not if you use a lease-trading Web site.

The recently developed business of lease trading, called "lease assumption" in legal jargon, is based on a simple idea: "Sellers" (lease holders) list their cars and payment details; "buyers" (who assume the lease) search for listings that match their needs. The sites connect the two parties and facilitate the process of legally transferring the lease. LeaseTrader.com and Swapalease are the leaders in online lease assumption; they are flourishing as leasing grows in popularity.

Why Would Someone Want My Lease?
If you can't wait to get out of your lease, you may wonder why someone else would want to take it over. There are many reasons:

A lease allows buyers to get into a late-model vehicle without a hefty down payment.
It's a short-term car lease — great for executives or grad students.
Lifestyle changes. (New parents need a larger car; empty nesters need a smaller one.)
Lease-swappers can drive a different car every year or two.
The new leaseholder can still buy the car at the end of the contract period if he/she wants.

Even if your current monthly lease payments are higher than average for your vehicle, your car may be an attractive candidate if it has low mileage or if you offer an up-front cash incentive, which can be used to lower the effective monthly payment.

What's the Cost?
Of course, there are some fees to make this transaction happen, but they aren't steep: Prices vary among the sites and leasing companies, who charge a fee to transfer the lease. The bulk of the cost is borne by the person assuming the lease. But it's small potatoes compared to the cost of early termination.

Take for example Keith Begin, of St. Petersburg, Florida. He found his first-choice car with just one day's browsing on LeaseTrader: a 2006 Hummer H3 with 19,000 miles and 19 months left on the lease — for only $322 per month. It cost him a total of about $750 to assume ownership of the car, which was located three hours away. Any way he looked at it, it was a great deal.

"Somebody else had to put down the $2,000-$3,000 [in down payment]," Begin said, "and my commitment was a lot less than it would have been if I'd gone through a dealer."

Sharon Covington of Long Beach, California, was only five months into a three-year lease on a 2007 Chevy Tahoe when circumstances changed and she suddenly needed to dump it. "I went to CarMax thinking they could solve my problems, and it was outrageous what I would have had to put in: $10,000-15,000 additional to pay off GMAC," she said. Covington discovered LeaseTrader.com and within days, found someone to take over her $550/month payments. The whole transaction cost her $250.

"It was completely seamless for me," she said. "I was shocked beyond belief."

Can Everyone Swap Leases?
According to Swapalease's Executive Vice President of Operations Scot Hall, some 80 percent of leases can be transferred completely with no strings attached. But approximately 10 percent of leasing companies require the original leaseholder to retain some liability for the vehicle even after it is transferred. Nissan/Infiniti and Honda/Acura fall under this category. Whether you can even transfer a lease financed by Honda Financial Services depends on where you live, so check with the company before listing your car or attempting to assume a Honda/Acura lease swap.

Another 10 percent of leasing companies don't permit transfers at all: usually bank-based companies such as Chase Auto Finance and Huntington Bank Leasing, or smaller credit unions. This is an important factor to remember if you decide to lease a new vehicle in the future.

And Now, the Warning Label
Transferring a lease contract is a legal procedure, and like buying a new car, there's no turning back once the ink is dry. Market analyst Lee Scott, a former car salesman, suggests asking the following questions to protect yourself.

If you want to exit your lease:

Does the person who wants to assume your lease have good credit?
Does your current lease company allow the transfer?
Will you be responsible for anything after the transfer?

If you want to assume a lease:

Have you read and understood a copy of the original lease agreement carefully?
Will the remaining lease period extend past the vehicle warranty period?
Have you had the car inspected? You could be held responsible for damage that may have occurred before you assumed the lease.
Know who you're dealing with. Is it another consumer, or is the person listing the vehicle a dealer?
Can you lease a new car for a price similar to that of the car you're looking at? It sounds counterintuitive, but with the lease deals offered these days, it is sometimes possible.
Are there any turn-in or lease-end charges, such as with Mercedes-Benz? (It's $595 unless you lease another Benz.)
Did you get a vehicle history report on the car you want to lease?

Note that the major online lease-assumption sites will help you with vehicle inspections (for a fee), vehicle history reports, links to long-distance auto shippers and credit qualification. (LeaseTrader prequalifies all potential buyers; Swapalease checks buyers' credit after they reach an agreement with a leaseholder.)

A Win/Win for Consumers, Automakers
While automakers' finance companies were initially resistant to the idea of their customers' leases changing hands, they've now come on board, according to Serge Stiberman, CEO of LeaseTrader.com. Letting folks transfer their lease makes particularly good sense for Mercedes-Benz and BMW; in 2008, leasing made up a whopping 36 and 56 percent of their respective sales.

"Companies like BMW realize that they can hold on to these customers by letting people get out of their lease," said Stiberman. "They get a brand-new customer, and they've created a new relationship with the older customer." As a result, "You're getting people that wouldn't normally lease a vehicle excited about leasing again."

Lease-assumption sites are still in their early stages, but are growing quickly. John Sternal, vice president of marketing communications for LeaseTrader, says that his site facilitated approximately 35,000 lease swaps in 2007. Swapalease facilitated 6,000 swaps last year, according to Hall. The sites have grown primarily through word of mouth, Internet searches and the media. Ironically, many car dealers aren't aware of these sites, so consider yourself "in the know."

An Automotive "Annulment"?
Online lease trading offers a greater measure of freedom to leaseholders than ever before. And if you're deciding whether to lease or buy, a lease contract that permits vehicle transfers acts a bit like an automotive prenup. It's easier to take the plunge knowing that, if you want out, the dealer won't necessarily be able to take you for everything you've got.

As you probably already know, getting out of a car lease is not as easy as getting in. Quitting a lease means backing out of an original agreement that provided for low payments over a fixed number of years. Those low payments are only possible if the lease is completed as agreed.

There are a number of ways
In order to end your lease ("early termination"), you can return your car and pay the lease company what you still owe, which could be substantial. At least, that's one way to do it but not necessarily the best way.

The reason that this might not be the best way to get out of your lease is that the amount you owe on your lease can be much more than you might have anticipated, due to the way in which the lease company calculates your early termination costs (read the small print on the back of your lease contract). Most people are very surprised when they learn just how much they owe. They quickly learn how little of their lease balance has been paid off.

There seems to be a common misconception that, to get out of a lease, one simply returns the car, pays some kind of penalty fee, and it's all over. Not true. This is not the way it works, unfortunately. The actual cost of early lease termination can be thousands of dollars, depending on how much of the lease remains.

Actually, you have a number of possible options for getting out of your lease, some of which will be better for you than the others. You're looking for the option that will save you the most money and trouble, and protect your credit rating.

Lease transfer is the best way
One your best options may be to transfer your lease to someone would like to pick it up and take it off your hands — a lease assumption. There are significant advantages for this method. It is low cost (no penalties, no payoffs, but transfer fees), it is relatively easy, and it does not affect your credit score.

There's a whole set of potential buyers out there who are looking for short-term leases without going through dealers and the associated extra costs.

However, to get our of your lease using this method, you need to follow the correct process and check to see if your lease company allows it. You can't simply let someone take over your lease without the lease company's knowledge and involvement. The new "lessee" must get approved and sign new lease papers.

Car rental companies assume you are going to pay automobile insurance when you rent a car. Some states have insurance as optional while a few states have it built into their costs. Car rental insurance is charged beyond the advertised rate. It's a hidden and costly expense but can be avoided, as described in the following steps.

Ask the standard car insurance company if you are covered when you drive a rental car. Quite a few insurance policies do cover car rentals.
Step 2

Check with one of your upper-level credit card companies like American Express or Mastercard Gold to see if they provide insurance coverage when you use their card to rent the vehicle. Make sure the credit card covers all aspects of liability--most do.
Step 3

Rent a larger car and not an economy car because some rental companies offer special rates for larger vehicles that already includes CDW/LDW. All in all, you save more with a larger car than an economy car by not having to pay for daily insurance fees.

Tips & Warnings

Know before you go. Make sure you have all the insurance criteria figured out before going to the car rental office. This assures there is no second guessing or wrong decisions made because you don't know.
Purchasing CDW or Loss Damage Wavier releases the rental driver of responsibility of loss or damage to the car to its full value. But read the small print because each rental agency is different.
CDW and LDW regulations vary from state to state. Read the fine print. You can also check with your travel agent or automobile membership company on each state's car rental insurance criteria.
It costs anywhere from $10 to $25 extra a day for car rental insurance. That can add up if you are renting a car for a week or more.
Car rental companies tell you that if you purchase car rental insurance, it can prevent liability of any damage to the rental, assuming you are not guilty of gross negligence.

My boyfriend and I are planning a trip to Alaska this summer and realized we’d save a lot of money in our travels by renting a car once we get there (the Alaska railroad is *expensive*). The only problem is that we will both be under the age of 25 when we’re there (he’ll be 24, I’ll be 23) and every rental car agency I can find would charge us a huge daily fee. We both have impeccable driving records (not even so much as a parking ticket between us), good car insurance, and AAA. Is there anything we could do to get around this fee, or any company out there that trusts us under 25s?

This is a tough one. For the most part, car rental companies aren’t very flexible with the surcharges for under-25 renters, unless you’re renting your car as a government employee. You can be the greatest driver in the world, but that’s not going to matter here. Your age means higher rates. Sorry.

There are some minor exceptions, so it’s important to shop around. But don’t get your hopes up.

Check the local rules. Most national chains, perhaps with a whiff of irony, will charge $25 per day for an under-25 renter. But those policies are national guidelines, not hard-and-fast rules. Many local outlets of major chains will charge less than the maximum. Others, such as those in New York, will charge more. For example, a quick search shows me that National Car Rental charges only $10 per day surcharge at its Anchorage Airport location. It’s still a fee, but it’s less than they could charge, and less than their peers are charging.

Try mom-and-pop shops. Another option is to call (instead of surfing the web) to contact smaller, local providers. Find them in the yellow pages (or an online directory) and then work the phones. These shops might not rent the newest or nicest vehicles — ten years ago, I rented a crappy little Ford Fiesta for a few days from a no-name local rental company on Kodiak Island. But these local companies may be more forgiving with the under-25 requirement. This may take some legwork, but it could save you a bundle. Mentioning your clean driving record might have more influence on a family-owned one-shop rental joint than on a global corporation’s local representative or franchisee.

Work your memberships. Finally, if you’re a member of any organization that has a group discount code with a car rental company, see if you can use that affiliation to waive the surcharge. It depends on the terms of the umbrella agreement that the association negotiated. Again, you might need to use the phone to get the straight story. I get little cards for car rental discounts from my insurance company (USAA), my credit union, my alumni association, professional associations, and even my gas bill. Check your member benefits, and see if something works. You may need to show a member card when you show up at the rental counter.

If you reserve via the web, print copies of everything, including the general rental policies. Many rental chains won’t give you the under-25 surcharge up front, but will bury it in their FAQs. Look carefully, and print a record of it.

Also, print a copy of your personal auto insurance policy and take it with you when you travel. Having proof of insurance could assuage a nervous rental agent.

Bottom line: When it comes to car rentals, being under 25 stinks. You’ll need to work harder to get a deal, if you get one at all. But if it’s any consolation, you still have your youth.

Rental Cars: Do You Make This Costly Car Rental Mistake?

Doesn't it seem confusing sometimes just to get a rental car? There seems to be so much paperwork and so many decisions to make.

For example, should you get the collision damage waiver or not? Should you buy additional insurance coverage from the car rental company?

If you've ever watched people at the rental car counter, you know these are questions that most people struggle with. Sometimes you can decline additional insurance on car rentals, but there are specific instances that you should always buy the insurance. But how do you know?

One of the biggest areas of confusion is the Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) offered by the car rental company at the time of rental. It covers damage to the rental car if you are involved in an accident.

The CDW isn't exactly insurance, and it only covers only damage to the rental car. It doesn't cover property damage or personal injury. If CDW is purchased, the car rental company waives some or all of its right to gain from you for physical damages to the car.

So should you purchase the CDW the car rental agency pushes at you? Experts say that most people don't need it but purchase it anyway. This is a very costly mistake!

You can save yourself a lot of hassle and unnecessary cost by doing three things. First, check your own car insurance policy to see what coverage carries over to rental cars. Second, see if the credit card you are using offers any coverage for renting. And finally, check the options the car rental agency offers in its own policies.

Many car insurance policies include all-inclusive and collision coverage to damages to rental cars. There is no sense paying for more if your policy includes this coverage, right? Just verify the details with your insurance agent before you decline the car rental company's additional insurance options.

Typical car insurance policies provide liability coverage that extends to car rentals. If you injure someone in an accident while driving a rental car, your policy will often cover you. If your car insurance policy does not provide these coverages when you are driving car rentals, be sure to purchase additional insurance from the car rental company to protect yourself.

In addition, many credit cards offer coverage for rental cars. If your credit card includes coverage for car rentals that have been damaged in an accident, you don't need to buy any other additional insurance coverage the car rental company offers you.

Finally, read the car rental policy carefully and decide whether or not your car insurance or credit card covers you. Then discuss the car rental's coverage with the agent. Always make an informed decision. Don't give into pressure by the car rental agent.

Deciding whether or not to pay for additional insurance coverage the car rental companies offer can be a tough decision. Check with your credit cards and existing car insurance policy to see if they provide rental car provisions, and if they don't, you'd better consider spending the extra money for additional insurance for your own protection.

You shouldn't pay for anything that you really don't need! On the other hand, you don't want to have inadequate coverage in the event of an accident with rental cars.

Beleaguered companies are finding fresh ways to reach into your wallet

Look out for cancellation penalties. Beware of energy surcharges. And watch for facilities fees.

No, not on your airline ticket. Not on your hotel folio. You may find these new extras on your next car rental bill.

Beleaguered auto rental firms are quietly adding new surcharges designed to lift revenues in a recessionary economy.

To get an idea of how absurd it’s becoming, meet Jim Swofford. He found a mysterious $5 fee on his Hertz bill recently, which a representative described as a cancellation fee. Car rental companies typically don’t charge their customers for cancellations, so Swofford, who frequently rents from Hertz, said he didn’t want another car he’d reserved for later.

“That’ll be $25,” the agent told him.

“So I jokingly said I would not cancel but just be a no-show,” he remembers. “She said that would result in a $50 fee.”

Or talk to Eric Hegwer, a photographer from Austin, Texas, who spotted a $1 “energy surcharge” on his Hertz car rental bill recently. “My previous rentals didn’t have one,” he says.

I asked Hertz about the two new surcharges. Company spokeswoman Paula Rivera told me the cancellation fee, which was added in December, applied only to prepaid reservations and is meant to “reimburse Hertz for the paperwork and billing involved with a prepaid reservation.” The fee also covers part of the company’s cost of holding vehicles for prepaid reservations. The energy surcharge, which was added in October, bills all rentals in most states an additional $1 a day “to offset the increasing costs of utilities, bus fuel, oil and grease,” she said.

It’s easy to see why car rental companies are taking these steps. The industry is hemorrhaging money faster than oil leaking from a cracked gasket. Hertz lost $73 million the fourth quarter, and competitor Avis lost $121 million in the same period. They fared much better than Advantage Rent A Car, which filed for bankruptcy protection in December and whose assets were sold to Hertz for a reported $33 million.

Every penny counts for the car rental companies. Then again, in this dreadful economy, who isn’t counting every cent?

Shocking anecdotes aside, there’s a pattern here, and you don’t have to be an investigative reporter or a conspiracy theory-obsessed columnist to see it. Just read the annual reports issued by one of the publicly traded car rental companies. (Look for the form 10-K and then scroll down to “Legal Proceedings” for an enlightening read.) They’re littered with lawsuits over fees, surcharges and add-ons that motorists say broadsided them when they rented a car.

How to stay ahead of these extras? Knowing is half the battle. Here are five of the newer charges that could sideswipe you on your next trip.

A fee for something you’ve already paid for
This is one of the more creative new ways of separating you from your money: charging you twice for the same thing. “Three times now, with three different companies, they have tried to charge me for gas when I’ve returned the car with a full tank and claimed it was an honest mistake,” says Sid Savara, a software engineer in Oahu, Hawaii. “It leads me to suspect they are just tacking the fee on and most people aren’t noticing or complaining about it.”

Boston-based author John DiPietro brought his own E-ZPass toll transponder when he rented a car in Massachusetts recently, but Budget billed him for the toll roads anyway. “We’re still trying to resolve it,” he told me.

Now more than ever, it’s important to be on the lookout for duplicate charges on your rental bill.

A fee for something that should come with the car
Such as tires. Enterprise recently charged one of Edgar Dworsky’s readers a $2 “tire fee.” (He edits a Web site called Consumer World, and like me, he hears a lot of horror stories from travelers.) What’s a tire fee? Enterprise told Dworsky it was required by the state of Florida. “I guess the consumer advice is to order a car without tires next time,” he joked.

But other fees can’t be blamed on the state, including surcharges that cover the cost of oil and grease. It might be interesting to show up at a car rental counter with four tires and a can of Pennzoil, and ask to have those fees waived. You think they would do it? Yeah, neither do I.

Surcharge on surcharges
Scott Lerman found a “privilege fee” on his last car rental in Florida, which applied to rentals picked up within 48 hours of flight arrival. “Never seen anything like it,” says the Livingston, N.J.-based freelance publicist. (The fee covers the costs of operating an off-airport location.)

Other renters have reported seeing a similar surcharge combined with what’s often called a concession recovery fee, which amounts to a surcharge on top of a surcharge. At best, car rental companies are coming up with new and confusing names for their fees. At worst, they’re charging us a fee on top of another fee. Next thing you know, there’ll be a surcharge on a surcharge on top of a surcharge. Don’t laugh — I’m sure they’ve already thought of it.

The stadium tax
Fees for new stadiums and concert halls are technically not new, and technically they’re not even controlled by car rental companies. Except that municipalities keep coming up with new ones and car rental companies don’t lobby hard enough to have the fees removed. So rental firms are not completely blameless.

Seth Mendelsohn, the president of a food store in Boulder, Colo., found a $4 “downtown arena” fee on his bill when he visited Kansas City recently. “Apparently the city is trying to pay for part of the Sprint Center through car rental fees,” he told me.

There are dozens — perhaps hundreds — of these so-called stadium taxes across the country. And new ones keep popping up. One of the latest is a car rental tax in Gwinnett County, Ga., to build a stadium for the Atlanta Braves.

Extra driver fees
These aren’t brand new, but the way in which they’re being enforced has changed recently. When Carol Stevenson and her sister rented a car from Payless in Phoenix, they were asked to pay $9 a day more if Stevenson’s sister wanted to drive. “And that didn’t include their insurance waiver,” she remembers.

Why charge for an extra driver? The simple answer: because they can.

In the past, car rental agents looked the other way when two drivers showed up to rent the same car. But now, with money tight, they’re applying more pressure to authorize a second driver. If you don’t fork over the money and happen to get into an accident, they warn, you won’t be covered by their insurance. Of course, that assumes you buy their overpriced collision-damage waiver in the first place. Odds are, your credit card or car insurance offers comparable coverage.

Most of these fees can be avoided by pre-paying for your car through one of the “opaque” travel sites such as Hotwire.com or Priceline.com, or by buying through an online travel agency that guarantees its rates. But car rental companies are trying to find a way to stick it to customers with prepaid vouchers, too. I’ll have more on that in a future column.

Where will it end? Something tells me we’re not there yet. Not even close.

Do You Need Car Rental Insurance?

So, have you planned your upcoming holidays? You may want to rent a car once you reach your holiday destination. Renting a car affords you the flexibility of movement instead of having to rely on public transportation.

One headache experienced by most folks when they set out to rent a car is determining what type of insurance coverage they would need for the vehicle. Usually a car rental agency would ask if you would like to purchase a Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) also known as Loss Damage Waiver (LDW) or personal liability insurance. Do you need such coverage?

Let’s look at LDW first:

LDWs waive financial responsibility on your part in the event that your car is damaged or stolen. In most instances, LDWs also cover loss of use. This is the loss sustained by the car rental company in the event the rented car is damaged and is being repaired at the workshop.

LDWs may come with hidden clauses. Check to see if the waiver becomes void if accident is caused through speeding or driving while under the influence of alcohol. If your existing auto insurance policy does not include adequate LDW, be prepared to fork out between from $9 to $20 a day.

Personal Liability Insurance

Car rental companies are required by law to specify the amount of liability insurance required. Be prepared to fork out anywhere from $7 to $14 a day should you decide to take up this coverage.

If you regularly rent cars and this is a steep sum to pay, it would also be wise to purchase a non-owner liability policy. This policy not only provides you with protection when you rent a car but also when you borrow someone else’s car.

Here are two important steps to take before deciding whether you need insurance coverage for your rented car.

Existing Auto Insurance Policy

Talk to your auto insurance policy company. Does your existing auto insurance policy cover your rented car and what amount does it cover? In most instances you would find that your existing policy covers your rental car, in which case you need not purchase a CDW.

What about personal liability insurance? Will it cover damage to other cars and passengers? If they do cover these areas, then you would not need the rental company’s personal liability insurance. But then if you’re renting a luxury car, your current auto policy may not sufficiently cover damage that occurs to it and you may want to consider additional coverage the rental company has to offer.

Credit Card Coverage

Before considering taking up insurance coverage for your rented car, check also with your credit card company as to what insurance coverage you’re already offered. What type of card do you hold? If you have a platinum card, you will most likely be offered more coverage than a gold card.

Depending on the credit card you have, you may be offered coverage for loss of a rented car, coverage for towing or loss of personal belongings. Coverage may not be offered for bodily injury or claims. To be on the safe side, ask for details of the coverage to be sent to you in writing.

When you rent a car, there's always that moment of truth, the moment when the salesperson asks you if you would like to purchase insurance (or more accurately, a loss waiver) through the rental company. According to most of these salespeople, if you do not purchase the insurance (which can bump the price of your rental up $20 per day or more) the consequences for the slightest scuff on the door will send you spiraling into bankruptcy. The cost of insurance at the rental car counter may also vary depending on the rental car company, state and the type of car you wish to rent. Car rental insurance can be complicated and you might even feel pressured into purchasing it, but before you commit yourself to spending the money on a loss waiver, take a moment to think about some other options.

Car Insurance

If you carry comprehensive and collision coverage, your personal auto policy will generally cover the cost of replacing or repairing a stolen or damaged rental car. Because each insurance company is a little different, however, it is a good idea to speak with your insurance agent and confirm that the rental car is covered by your existing policy.

Remember that any deductibles you have will apply to the rental car. For instance, if you have a $500 deductible and sustain $450 worth of damage, you will be responsible for the full cost. If you have a $500 deductible and sustain $1000 worth of damage, you will be responsible for the first $500 and the insurance company will pay for the balance.

Remember, too, that for your rental car to be covered you must carry comprehensive and collision insurance. If your insurance protects you only against liability, it will not cover the cost to repair or replace a rental car if it is wrecked or stolen. You may also want to take note that in the event of a car accident with the rental car, your personal insurance premium may go up in cost.

The meaning of a "Car" (automobile) by definition - is a wheeled vehicle that carries its own motor and transports passengers. Cars as we know them wasn't fabricated in a by a single originator - the progression history of cars took effect all over the world in the 19th century and the start of the 20th century - and it is estimated that around hundred thousand of patents been registered.

Car rental companies came a short while after cars became popular. Rent-a-car agency is a corporation that allows someone to use their car in return for regular fees. Today most car rentals company's got local branches primarily located close by airports or at big cities.

The largest motor company in the world today is Ford and is a primary piece of the car rental history. Henry Ford started a small workroom in his backyard. Fords vision was to make cars financially manageable and directed at every person.

Landmark Ford models contain the Model T (over ten million were built until 1925), and also Ford V8 (which used by Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow - known as Bonny and Clyde the famous bank robbers).

The car rental manufacturing had its commencement nearly fastened to Ford's presentment of the "frugal" type of "Model T" - which was in 1908.

Car Rental history started at 1916 by Nebraskan goes by the name of Joe Saunders which was reputedly the first human being to run a car rental business.

Joe let out the Ford Model T and rented it to representative businesses that showed around and needed a car because he wanted to take a native girl out.)

Car rental companies mainly function as an alternative for someone who his car is briefly impossible to reach or broken.

The first big car rental company started at September 1918 by Walter Jacobs - a 22 year old at the time from Chicago - opened a rent-a-car business. He began with twelve Model T cars, but within 5 years the firm was producing revenue of $1 million annual incomes. John Hertz - owner of a few local cab companies purchased Jacob's place, and that way it got the name "Hertz".

The car rental industry is in a radical manner competitive in the last 50 years, and there's a lot of small renting companies all around the world, European companies like Europcar and even there are big local companies in the Middle East like car rental in Israel companies such as Eldan. There are 2 primary types of car rental corporations: corporations that own fleet of cars (a group of cars operated under integrated supervision), and corporations which control on a middleman ideal - and have cooperation with car hire companies to provide approach to their cars.

But with today’s competitive market, I wouldn’t be surprised that when trying to rent a car you can end up renting a car that sounds like lawnmower instead. Do not forget, the idea is to rent a car inexpensively, not one that is destined to be scrapped the minute you return it.
