It's Rodeo Time in Playas del Coco!

It's party time once again in Playas del Coco, Guanacaste! Mid - to the last weekend of January is the popular Dias del Fiesta, where the downtown streets will be overtaken by people, parades and food carts - so much fun for the entire family!

One of the biggest events during Dias del Fiesta will be the cowboy rodeos! If you've never been, or even if you have, you'll see typical Costa Rican families attending all of the rodeo events scheduled throughout the weekend. Sometimes there are amusement rides set up for the kids as it's a really big celebration!

Horses will be paraded through the streets as the local cowboys show off their riding skills. Who knew? It's not something we heard about before visiting Costa Rica. We always thought eco-tourism, surfing and volcanoes. Not cowboys! Learn more about the Cowboy Culture in Costa Rica!

People will be partying in all the local clubs and bars, not so much in the streets, but you never know! Costa Ricans do know how to celebrate.

Costa Rica Whale and Dolphin Festival

To celebrate the yearly return of humpback whales to Marino Ballena National Park from July to October, the community of Bahia Ballena will hold it's 9th annual Costa Rica 2017 Whale and Dolphin Festival over 2 weekends in September and October.

What's the Whale and Dolphin Festival all about? It's about creating awareness of how valuable these majestic creatures are to our planet. Everyone is invited to enjoy concerts, attend environmental workshops and cetacean talks at resorts, plus there will be a sculpture contest, and of course, whale watching in a responsible and fun way. This increasingly popular event drew over 40,000 visitors in 2016.

Marino Ballena National Park is also know for its' annual visitations including several species of whales, dolphins and seat turtles. When you're visiting the park, don't miss seeing the giant whale tail that's formed by a natural sand bar!

Visit the park during these dates to join in on the fun: September 15-18; 23-24; and October 1, 2017. Prices to attend the Whale and Dolphin Festival include a narrated 1.5-hour boat tour of Marino Ballena National Park by a trained cetacean guide. The cost is 15,000 Colones or approx $26 USD per adult, and 10,000 Colones or approx $17 USD for kids are 3-9. Foreign tourists are required to pay an additional $6 for entrance to the national park.

Liberia, Costa Rica’s gateway to elsewhere, is worth a closer look

LIBERIA, Guanacaste — When I mentioned that I was taking Southwest Airline’s inaugural flight from Baltimore to Liberia, Costa Rica, someone asked if I was worried about the Ebola virus.

I had to clarify that I was headed to Liberia in Costa Rica, the Central American tropical paradise, not the beleaguered African country.

Ebola or not, foreigners and even Ticos may avoid Liberia like the plague because of the traffic and gritty conditions on its outskirts as they traverse the Inter-American Highway on their way to other destinations.

If headed for the beaches, they’re likely to avoid the city altogether after arriving at Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport, the country’s increasingly busy and second international airport.

Yet I made a point of visiting this city, even though it ate into my beach and mountain time, and I was not disappointed. The highlight was a stop at the home/museum/curiosity gallery of the man who many say epitomizes “local color.” Rafael Zuñiga, who is known as “El Pellejo” (“Skin”), was introduced to me by my tour guide Erick Wiessel.

Pellejo welcomed me to his home on Calle 7 and Avenida 2 next to the tiny river that flows through town. Although he was hurrying back to his “real job” as a sanitation truck driver, Pellejo proudly showed off his most unusual assortment of artifacts, tools, photos, animal skulls and other relics.

The stout, middle-aged man with his straw hat, peering eyes and perpetual smile treated me to a demonstration of his rapid-fire Spanish with a bomba, a short, funny poem popular among the local cowboys, or sabaneros, whose culture he is trying to preserve.

The front of his simple but crowded home was covered with hand-painted signs featuring Pellejo’s favorite proverbs, including “El tirano muere y su reino termina, el martir muere y su reino comienza.” (“The tyrant dies and his reign ends, the martyr dies and his reign begins.”) The one sign in English simply reads, “WELCOME MY FRIEND LIBERIA CITY WE LOVE YOU.”

Pellejo, who has been amassing his collection of random stuff since he was 10 years old, dubiously claims that it’s now worth hundreds of thousands of dollars. It’s kind of like a Costa Rican version of a “Ripley’s Believe It or Not” museum, a precious repository of regional lore.

But tour guide, professor and consultant Josué Duarte Montes says Liberia’s best local attraction is Pellejo himself.

“He is the best representation of the Tico, especially the sabanero of Guanacaste; the way he talks, the way he looks, but most of all … his knowledge and passion for the history of our cultural heritage,” Josué said.

All Pellejo asks from visitors is that they leave a donation to help with the display and maintenance of his collection.

I met Josué as I strolled through Liberia’s shaded and pleasant Parque Central, the central park, with its gazebo-bandstand facing a spacious, modern, whitewashed church.

Josué was speaking to aspiring young tour guides, including some surfers, about how the gazebo accommodates not only musicians but also cultural, religious, community and political activities, with a design that allows sound to travel from the center of the gazebo outward.

As Josué led his group to the church, I spotted four Belgians that I had played pool with the night before at Buena Vista Resort in the nearby mountains (proof that some tourists do indeed make a trip to Liberia, and not just around it.)

Someday tourists and Ticos alike may give Guanacaste’s provincial capital (population 57,000) a second thought, as tourism inevitably grows in the least populated of the country’s seven provinces.

But the increasingly busy airport and the Inter-American Highway (Route 1) is undergoing a major improvement that will create an overpass so motorists will not be slowed down anymore on its blighted and perpetually congested edges.

If completed next May as expected, it will speed traffic away along that edge, but my hunch is that the relative anonymity of Liberia seems destined to change.

In some ways Liberia reminded me of the vibrant, preserved downtowns of Antigua, Guatemala, or Granada, Nicaragua, or Costa Rica’s own Heredia. With its colonial architecture and clean, tree-lined streets, it’s a pleasant place to go for a stroll.

One of those streets is not only tree-lined but has a huge guanacaste tree, for which the province is named, smack in its middle, allowing for traffic to go around it.

Diagonally opposite from the Parque Central is an imposing and fortress-like masonry structure with the words Comandancia de Plaza atop a huge archway with iron grates and doors. It’s the old jail, or carcel, which is being turned into a gallery and eventually a museum about the Guanacaste region, according to Josué, but on a recent visit there were no exhibits yet.

An old sign that said “Museo de Guanacaste” had fallen and was leaning upside down against a tree in the courtyard. That sign may have hinted at neglect or delays, but the painters and plasterers working there and people in business attire hunkered down in a meeting room dispelled any such notions.

Liberia also has an attractive public market that is clean and inviting, with both fresh and prepared foods and plenty of clothes and other items for sale. Not far from there, I enjoyed a lunch of traditional Costa Rican food at the pleasantly air-conditioned El Pilar.

While Pellejo and others may look to the past for inspiration, two nearby institutions are definitely focused on the future. While the mission of Earth University’s La Flor campus is to research sustainable and clean energy, agricultural innovations and waste transformation technology, the rocket scientists at Ad Astra look to take us to space with the development of Plasma Rocket Propulsion systems.

Whether there’s a tourism boom in Liberia’s future remains to be seen. But with the airport and highway moving an ever-growing number of visitors, it seems inevitable that more of them will visit Liberia, especially if the city takes steps to make it more inviting, such as opening the museum in the old carcel.

Josué rhetorically asked, “Why people should visit Liberia — why not?? … Liberia has history hidden in every corner but exposed on the people’s faces, and culture that comes from centuries ago and is still vivid in everyday life.”

Where is Playas del Coco?
Playas del Coco is a small fishing village with shops & restaurants in the northwestern province of Guanacaste on the Pacific Ocean. It's just west of Costa Rica's second largest international airport, Daniel Oduber Quiros International Airport in Liberia, about 20 minutes from our condo.

About Our Condo
Our condo is located in a small, quiet complex of only 17 units (not like you'll find with some other bustling condo developments in Playas del Coco). It's a 2-story condo that offers views of the beautiful Pacific Ocean and Tortuga Island from the second-floor bedroom balcony or the spacious rooftop terrace, that also offers mountain views to the back of the property.

Our condo offers a pool just 7 steps down from our door! We have spacious 10-foot-high ceilings that create an airy feeling, plus it's fully air-conditioned throughout to keep you cool and comfortable during your stay. We have a custom kitchen featuring Costa Rican wood cabinets, granite countertops and all the necessities. There's a dining room (plus a shared poolside dining area) and a living area. We offer a safe for personal belongings, a flat-screen TV and of course, free WI-Fi! The bedroom features a plush pillow-top bed so you can get a restful night's sleep after a day of fun in the Costa Rican sun.

Please Note: We have several sets of stairs leading up to our condo, plus a roof top terrace that's accessed by a spiral staircase, so unfortunately if stairs don't work for you, our condo may sadly not be the best fit :(

How Affordable is Our Condo?
We purchased our condo in 2011 and are proud to say we've never raised the rates! During high season, November to March inclusive, our rates are as follows:

$75 (US) per night, with a 3-night minimum stay
$400 (US) per week
$1,100 (US) per month

Playa Hermosa:
An 8 km drive north, Playa Hermosa is famous for it's black sand that sparkles with a touch of gold, which is rumored to provide healing properties. The calm waters of Playa Hermosa are popular for swimming, as well as scuba diving and snorkeling.

Playa Tamarindo:

Discovery Costa Rica

Wow, talk about growth in Guanacaste! Besides a huge supermarket and the recently expanded Liberia airport - here we go again with the latest development breaking ground in 2018.

Discovery Costa Rica (ie. the Discovery Channel) will be an 880-hectare eco-tourism theme park just 2.3 km from Liberia airport. This $400-million adventure park will showcase Costa Rican culture through a combination of outdoor and indoor spaces. Highlights will include a water park, a wellness complex, hiking and biking trails, along with a hospital and a school.

And don't worry, even though Costa Rica is a country that struggles with droughts resulting in water rationing, the Costa Rican government says the Discovery Costa Rica project will supply it's own water from already existing wells located on the property.

Set to open in 2020, Discovery Costa Rica will employ 2,000 workers in the course of the construction phase, and will ultimately generate approximately 4,000 indirect and direct employee opportunities.

Discovery Channel will be building 3 additional developments throughout Guanacaste including Discovery Beach, Discovery Ocean and Discovery Volcano.

Ancient Petroglyph Found in Liberia!

Wow, Liberia in Guancaste is such a happening place! Besides all of the recent news, the Costa Rican Electricity Institute (commonly known as ICE; pronounced ee-say) just found an ancient petroglyph in Liberia!!

Said to be 1,000 years old, this engraved rock was found on the Blanco River banks when ICE was working on a geothermal project. Scientists believe the petroglyph was part of an indigenous cemetery dating between 300 and 800 A.D.

The drawing shows two spiral rivers and a bird, which symbolizes fertility. How cool is that?! Plus you can view even more petroglyphs in Liberia right near the airport -read:

Parque Nacional Volcan Poás

While staying at our spacious 2-story, 1-bedroom condo with an ocean-view rooftop terrace in Playas del Coco, Guanacaste, a trip to visit the stunning turquoise lake waters of Parque Nacional Volcan Poás, Alajuela, may be in your travel plans.

But if that's currently the case, you may have to wait awhile. As of April 17th, 2017, Parque Nacional Volcan Poás is closed indefinitely due to seismic activity, which includes gas and vapour eruptions that have been spewing volcano rock into the paths of visitors, some reaching as far as 1 km away, eek! This 1 km distance also coincides with the height of the white plume seen above the Poás lake crater.

Once the rumbling dies down, it's sure to open again to the public but in the mean time, check out the current status of Parque Nacional Volcan Poás hours here.

Manuel Antonio National Park

One of the most scenic drives we enjoyed in Costa Rica was traveling south inland and then down the coast from our ocean-view condo in Playas del Coco to stunningly beautiful Manuel Antonio National Park.

The first thing we notice along the way was the increasing heat and humidity as we left the relative comfort of the northern climate in Guanacaste. It's perfect that the drive allowed us to climatized as we went. And don't be fooled, the 365-km journey took us a good day to drive. Read: Driving and Car Rentals in Costa Rica.

Gaia Hotel & Reserve

When we visited Manuel Antonio, we were lucky enough to stay at the chic, boutique Gaia Hotel & Reserve, an amazing eco-friendly 5-star boutique hotel experience. This gorgeous terraced property offers gourmet dining and 24/7 room service, as well as a spa, a gym and an inviting outdoor pool, which we had to ourselves every evening. Heavenly! And since award-winning Gaia is located on a private nature reserve, we also took the complimentary guided tour to explore the properties trails while viewing orchids and wildlife.

We left the resort and followed our GPS map of Costa Rica while driving to the Manuel Antonio National Park entrance. Here we were bombarded by ticos (locals) yelling at us to 'Park here! Park here!', and as it was a little confusing as to where the road did actually end, we parked in one of theses lots with the yellers. In the end it was safe and secure, which is all that really mattered to us.

Although Manuel Antonio National Park is the country's smallest national park, it packs a big punch into a small space of 1,983 hectares (7.66 square miles). It's rugged natural beauty and 4 beaches tucked beneath the lush green mangroves is as about at pristine and gorgeous as it gets. The only thing that really got to me was the incredible heat after having been in the north and then in an air-conditioned vehicle for hours on end. There were families having picnics, hikers everywhere and just a few people actually enjoying the ocean waters including a handful of surfers.

Manuel Antonio National Park

Surrounded by tropical rainforest, Manuel Antonio National Park is home to 4 species of monkeys, 109 species of mammals and 184 bird species. It's important to note that the park is open from 7:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m., and is closed on Mondays. The admission fee is USD $16 per adult, while children 11 and under are free. The park offers swimming areas, lookout points and washrooms/showers. Local guides are available for tours at a cost of $51 per adult and $35 per child. Oh, and once you've left the park, you're ticket becomes invalid. So in other words, don't leave the park to have lunch and expect to get back in without paying another entrance fee. Quepos is a bustling, former banana-driven town that's a seaside neighbor to Manuel Antonio. It's streets are full of restaurants, including popular sodas, along with shops and casinos. There's also a new marina full of huge to-die-for yachts. The only tricky part we experienced was consistently finding the turn off road to get to our hotel on the hillside, which took more than a few attempts on one occasion but of course, was more than worth our temporary confusion.

So here it is, our list of 5 Things You Need to Know About Renting a Condo In Costa Rica (as they apply to our condo in Playas del Coco, Guanacaste, for simplicity's sake):

Location, location, location.

This is a relatively easy one - what do you want to do when you're in Costa Rica? If you narrow down the activities and experiences you'd like to have, it will much easier to pick a destination. The Guanacaste area offers so many things to do: excellent surfing, fishing, scuba diving, monkey-viewing, a variety of different sand beaches, turtle watching and so much more. But when it comes to location, you'll also need to ask how far away is the condo from:

the airport? 20-minutes by transfer/bus/taxi.
the beach? 5-minutes by taxi, USD$4
shopping, grocery stores and restaurants? 5-minutes by taxi, 15-20 minute walk

Amenities, amenities, amenities.

Here's a list of amenities and services that we offer at our condo - asking about these items can be useful when considering any vacation rental. What are the check-in and check-out times? Between 12 noon and 2:00 p.m.; check out 12 noon - if you'll be arriving later, just let us know ahead of time and we'll arrange our property manager to meet you.
What do we do if there is a problem with our stay? Contact the local property manager by telephone/onsite security/and/or contact the owners directly by email. We pride ourselves on being able to solve any issues quickly and efficiently.
Does your potential rental property allow pets or smoking? In our case, the answer is a strict 'No' for both.
How late is the pool open? 24/7 for your convenience.
Is the condo wheelchair accessible? We're sorry to say that ours is not - it's a 3 level condo with two sets of stairs leading up to the property, great for exercise without exercising!
Is the neighborhood safe, can we walk at night? Yes!
How do we access a taxi? It's as easy as visiting the onsite security office and requesting one.
Is there onsite parking? Yes, there is plenty of onsite parking in a secure area so you'll never have to worry.
Is there maid service? Our condo offers maid service at your request for a $25 fee but there's also a self-serve washer and dryer onsite.
What is the cancellation policy? In order to cover our costs, the initial deposit paid is non-refundable.
Is there a pharmacy and hospital nearby? Yes, the brand new CIMA hospital in Liberia opened in 2012.
How do we access local tours and dive shops? We can give you advice on our personal favourites so it's as easy as asking ;)

IRONMAN Coming to Playas del Coco, Costa Rica!

Wow, after all the recent exciting news about Playas del Coco, we've got something else to tell you! IRONMAN 70.3 is coming to Playas del Coco, Costa Rica!!

For the first time ever in Costa Rica, this world-renowned event takes place on June 18, 2017. It's estimated 1,800 will compete to win the circuit that includes a 1.9-mile swim in the Gulf of Papagayo; 90 km of cycling between San Blas and Sardinal; ending with a 21-km race in Playas del Coco.

Playas del Coco, Guanacaste

With more than 400 miles of coast line, the Guanacaste tourism area comprises the Pacific Coast area from the border of Nicaragua to the Bongo River estuary in the Nicoya Peninsula. This area boasts a significant number of protected areas including water, land, mountain, and coastal ecosystems that are teaming with life.

The incomparable beauty of its landscapes, ranges from tropical dry forests to lowland mountain forests, warm climate, and flourishing nature. All along the Guanacaste coastline are a number of beaches where you can swim in their warm Pacific Ocean waters. The coastal landscape is exceptional. Wow, our little corner of Costa Rica is growing once again!

Our 1-bedroom ocean-view condo in Playas del Coco, Guanacaste, is located only 20-25 minutes from Daniel Oduber International Airport in Liberia, making it a perfect location for your Costa Rica adventure.

Liberia, the capital city of Guanacaste, has a population of about 57,000 people while tiny Coco only has about 2,000 at most. And we're guessing here, facts and figures are sometimes hard to come by in Costa Rica.

Liberia is getting a new Walmart Supermarket (or super mercado), and that's good or bad depending on how you want to view it, but this new store is expected to provide about 90 jobs. The Walmart Supermarket will be the first of its' kind and the largest super mercado in all of Guanacaste. And don't be surprised, but Walmart already owns stores across Central American under the brands: Maxi Despensa, Maxi Pali, Despensa Familiar and Pali. And, in early 2019 there will be a Hard Rock Hotel Papagayo!

But of course, we don't want you to stay at a pricey hotel when you could stay at our 1-bedroom, ocean-view condo and save, save, SAVE for all the fun stuff including renting a car to explore, or to go surfing, or seeing the volcanoes and so much more!!
