style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Tahoma, Helvetica, FreeSans, sans-serif; font-size: 13px; line-height: 18px;">In my opinion, we are in the beginning phases of Reparations without being declared in such a situation. With the collapse of our security system for many of us and our Buppies, (i.e. 401k, other retirement income, insurance, unions, high-pay, etc.), we have little to no reason to work for the continued improvement of our captors.

We should no longer be in the phase of realizing there is a problem. Denial and disbelief should be winding down. When the top dog (white men) of our captors start proudly using food stamps intended for the ‘lower’ class, we need to be retreating and preparing. They are.

The next phase is anger. Though many of our people are very much into this, it needs to be controlled to a point. Make it work for you. Be angry enough to ask questions and analyze. Be angry enough to be an exposer of injustice. Be angry enough to open up your own educational institution. Be angry enough to demand Afro-Americans and all their history be included in books for children or write your own. Be angry enough to defend you neighborhoods by whatever means available when enemies encroach. Be angry enough to vote. Be angry enough to demand a fair voting and counting system. Be angry enough to confront the injustices - in the media, on a megaphone at a rally, to your legislator, in front of a municipal building, on YouTube or Twitter. What other justices to defend can you get angry enough for?

We have all the tools necessary to rebuild and start our own. What do I mean? Many of the reasons why Afro-Americans* have put up with the crap of modern day jobs and careers was for the perks. Pay, prestige, benefits, overpriced homes, 60” flat screens, X-box 360, all-types of media blitz junk ‘must haves’, etc. Thanks to the super-greedy, now the means, to connect with the vices of life are gone. Why would anyone put up with the injustices of racism that is practiced in many of our jobs/careers?

Afro-Americans have all the manpower and expertise to fulfill our rebuilding. Architects, engineers, accountants, lawyers, educators, bankers, health care practitioners, therapists, first responders, military specialists, bricklayers, clerks, secretaries, farmers, artisans, mechanics, managers of operations, logistical experts, etc. This includes all the experts locked up in prison. You name it. We have someone as an expert in the field.

We need to understand that our captors and their descendants have done everything in their power to destroy us and keep us divided. Whatever they instilled in us, our parents and ancestors that lead us to fall for that trap, needs to be refuted by ourselves and all generations moving forward. This isn’t as difficult as many believe. No longer accept or give as an answer to anyone ‘You’re no good.’ Instead say, ‘That was not a good choice for you. I have faith you can do better’. In that and similar ways, you are letting them know their ‘behavior’ is questionable not their ‘person’. You may be stunting a future genius. Someone who is going to free your people for decades to come.

At the present time we still have Black-owned banks. Dole out some of your money to them. Thanks to radio announcer Warren Ballentine, there is an initiative called the People Empowerment Movement available at various black-owned banks nationwide, which will reinvest through us in our communities. Take advantage of it. Freedom and justice is for us all and it starts with a small seed - You.

As our economy ‘collapses’, we need to remember, as our parents, pastors, and ancestors told us ‘we made a way out of no way’. We have what it takes. Our spoiled captors have been away from it for too long. They have no idea of what hard work really is. Let’s communicate and align ourselves with each other in our not too distant past and take advantage of this ‘change’ in the proverbial guard for our future. We need to pinpoint, with as much accuracy as possible, 1 year out, 5 years, 20 years, 50 years, 100 years and beyond, what our Reparations package will look like. Now is the time.

Like other things we value, good health is appreciated most when we don’t have it. During the year I have witnessed the passing or transition of several Brothers and Sisters. The unfortunately thing about these Brothers and Sisters were that in one way or another, they were reparation activists and all of them died under the average life expectancy age, and to my understanding, all used the US healthcare system for treatment. Well! You might ask: why would that be so significant? For one reason, many of us who are elders realized that the movement has not attracted the youth in any great numbers, which is necessary to sustain it in time. Consequently, that may required many of us to be around for awhile to develop a successful strategy which does bring in the youth in great numbers. We would need to be healthy and alive! Let me try and tell you the other reason!

Let me say on the outset, that the remarks which follow are very critical of the medical establishment, the health industry, or the healthcare system, in the US. However, my comments in no way are aimed at criticizing Brothers and Sisters who cared for our departed warriors and who tried to help sustain their lives to the best of their ability. My remarks are aimed at the medical establishment and suggest that we may need to look at this establishment more critically and to explore alternative approaches to healthcare for those we represent.

According to the Mayo Clinic, heart disease kills the largest number of Americans per year. According to the American Medical Association, heart disease kills more people in the US, than all forms of cancer combined. The Mayo Clinic also claims that lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths for both men and women in the US. Take a look at the two figures below:

Fig. I is a picture of a clogged artery (not very pretty is it) and Fig. II is a graphic representation of an unhealthy heart. By-pass surgery would be recommended to replace or bypass the clogged artery and replace with a vein from probably the leg. If successful, the surgery would then allow the patient’s heart to carry life sustaining fluids, oxygen, and nutrients throughout the body. We think! Unfortunately, the cause for the artery being clogged in the first place is not being addressed. Consequently, another bypass surgery may be required. MORE MONEY!

Stroke is the number three cause of death for women and the number four cause of death for men in the US. Type 2 diabetes, which can cause kidney damage, heart disease and blindness, is also a leading cause of death in both men and women. Kidney disease is the ninth-leading cause of death for both males and females in America. It can be caused by high blood pressure or diabetes, according to the Mayo Clinic.

Why am I citing the Mayo Clinic or the American Medical Association? Well, it’s not because I have any great love for these institutions. But I do know that many people, including many Blacks, consider these institutions credible, and speak the truth. Well, for argument sake, we’ll assume that they are correct in diagnosing significant health problems in the US. If there is doubt, I am sure that many of us know love ones, either in our family, among friends or associates, who may have transition from the above named diseases, especially since Blacks are affected disproportionately than whites or Latinos. It’s the recommended solutions to these problems that I have issues.

What does this has to do with a Medical Industrial Complex, and what is this Medical Industrial Complex? The Medical Industrial Complex refers to the health industry, which is composed of the multibillion-dollar congeries of enterprises including doctors, hospitals, nursing homes, insurance companies, drug manufacturers, hospital supply and equipment companies, real estate and construction businesses, health systems consulting and accounting firms, and banks. The primary function of this health industry or healthcare system in the United States is business (that is, to make profits). Thus, to make profit, the system needs SICK PEOPLE! Therefore, it might not be an incentive of the system to cure or make sick people well. In fact, it can be argued that the motivation of the system is to make well people, SICK. The industry can not profit from well people (however, the insurance companies are trying to with President Obama’s healthcare program. I will speak to this later). If institutions are profiting from our sickness and are not motivated to cure or make us well, then this must be addressed by NCOBRA, because HEALTH and ECONOMICS are two of our injury areas.

Because, this is an important topic, and since space has to be conserved in the newsletter, I am breaking the article up into three parts. In parts II and III, I will go into more detail how this country’s healthcare paradigm is flawed and doesn’t deliver healthcare, regardless of the health initiatives before us. I will argue why the reparations movement, especially N’COBRA, must address this issue as seriously as it does promoting HR-40, and offer an approach for a NCOBRA Health Commission.

National N’COBRA Education Commission

As soon as the South Florida chapter of N'COBRA received word that TransAfrica Forum, the A. Philip Randolph Institute and the Institute for Justice and Democracy in Haiti were headed to Miami for an Education Conference, it mobilized by contacting these and other groups. While on their way to the Conference, TransAfrica had noted, hundreds of members across the continent had agreed to have organized a protest in front of the Immigration and Naturalization Services, also known as the Department of Homeland Security Headquarters. This demonstration was an effort to reiterate their support for Haiti and a just immigration policy.

The local N'COBRA Chapter, along with volunteering members from the Veye Yo Haitian Community Center decided to arrive early for a meet and greet. The climate was clear though somewhat cloudy, which made for Perfect protest weather on an August day in Miami.

Upon arrival we greeted Sister Joia Jefferson Nuri of TransAfrica, point person for this event, along with IJDH's Steven Forrester and other leaders of human rights organizations and activists determined to stand for Haitians whenever possible. Joining forces to rally outside of the building, the group previously there had been told that the rally would necessitate a permit. Also, that the huge speakers brought in by the local SEIU would have to go – meaning that holding the protest right alongside the building was not a viable option.

The local chapter of N'COBRA, would like to applaud these two groups mainly for their relentless work in Human Rights issues, be it on Just Immigration, Prosecution of Crimes committed in the political arena on the island state of Ayiti or their interest in seeing that the Haitian electoral scenario find a more balanced field. However, having previously rallied in front of the Department of Homeland Security and Immigration office in Miami and being led by one of the most savvy of N'COBRA National Representatives; General Kuratibisha X. Rashid, everything fell right into place with the stroke of a Haitian Flag.

People immediately were led to the sidewalk and away from the building. The N'COBRA bullhorn coming in handier that ever, as this was the only means of audio present. Smaller Haitian and New Afrikan flags were handed out in the crowd beginning this protest with one of the many Keyol chants for social Justice!

Protestors said they were demanding changes in U.S. immigration policy for Haitians. Just as soon as a motorcade of Homeland Security cars lined up behind us, three traveling coaches loaded with a couple of hundred activists from across the nation pulled up in front. More than 200 demonstrators unloaded from the buses - ready to take on the world!!

They were calling attention to what all agreed are the “discriminatory policies that continue to treat Haitian immigrants in the U.S. by standards differently than immigrants from other countries, most notably Cuba.

South Florida N'COBRA was also calling for the White House to adopt the Haitian Family Reunification Plan (HFRP). The HFRP would help Haitians in Haiti and the Diaspora by granting immediate parole in the U.S. to already approved immigration beneficiaries. This plan would help reunite 16,000 minor children and spouses with their families and allow parolees to be eligible for work.

After creating quite a storm, dancing, singing Haitian chants and hugging with Chapter members in her usual style, Marlene told the N'COBRA Camera and the media, that: "Creating the Haitian Family Reunification Program could be the United States' most direct and significant form of support to Haiti's rebuilding. The Cuban Family Reunification Program has been renewed in 2009 and 2010 but a similar program for Haiti remains outstanding. We are coming together to ask in one voice: 'Equal Treatment for Haitians Now!'"

MAAFA refers to recent 500+ years “Great Tragedy” destruction of African peoples’ civilization through foreign invasions, rip off of human and natural resources, captivity of productive young people, removal from homeland, chattel slavery, colonizing oppression, dehumanization, and exploitation worldwide.

Why the Kiswahili term MAAFA vs. “Black Holocaust?”

Out of the movement of self-determination of Africans to define for ourselves what happened to Africa and it’s people forced brought in captivity to the Europeans’ “new world,” Dr. Wade Nobles, Marimba Ani and others deliberately used the Kiswahili word MAAFA. It describes the “Terrible Occurrence” or “Reoccurring Disaster” perpetrated upon African descent people. They maintained that MAAFA is a more fitting term of the unprecedented historical Great Tragedy, because holocaust (sacrificial burning) signifies what happened to other non-“Black” people.

MAAFA REMEMBRANCE OF THE MID-SOUTH PART OF BLACK & BLUE CIVIL WAR SESQUICENTENNIAL (150th Anniversary)………OCTOBER 1, 2011 NATCHEZ, MISSISSIPPI

Our MAAFA for the Mid-South covers the region below Memphis, Tennessee to Baton Rouge, Louisiana on both sides of the Mississippi River. Natchez’s Forks of the Roads “slave” markets sites are the center focus.

Thousands of enslaved fore-parents and Ancestors were brought by force in chains on the internal American, over ground railroad, middle passage from the upper old south and sold into chattel slavery again in the new lower south. It’s time for the MAAFA movement to manifest in the mid-south with the Forks of the Road at the center, the second largest “slave” selling market in the deep old southwest.

Who, Where are MAAFA Commemorations Taking Place? All over the Diaspora and in Africa!

MAAFA Remembrances: Chicago, MAAFA Healing Ceremony St. Paul’s Community Baptist Church (17 yrs) Brooklyn and Buffalo N. Jywanza

N'COBRA Education Commission

Black August originated in the prisons of California to honor fallen Freedom Fighters, Jonathan Jackson, George Jackson, William Christmas, James McClain and Khatari Gaulden. Jonathan Jackson was gunned down outside the Marin County California courthouse on August 7, 1970 as he attempted to liberate three imprisoned Black Liberation Fighters: James McClain, William Christmas and Ruchell Magee.

Ruchell Magee is the sole survivor of that armed rebellion. He is the former co-defendant of Angela Davis and has been locked down for 40 years, most of it in solitary confinement. George Jackson was assassinated by prison guards during a Black prison rebellion at San Quentin on August 21, 1971. Three prison guards were also killed during that rebellion and prison officials charged six Black and Latino prisoners with the death of those guards.

These six brothers became known as the San Quentin Six. To honor these fallen soldiers the brothers who participated in the collective founding of Black August wore black armbands on their left arm and studied revolutionary works, focusing on the works of George Jackson.

In the month of August the brothers did not listen to the radio or watch television. Additionally, they didn’t eat or drink anything from sun-up to sundown; and loud and boastful behavior was not allowed. The brothers did not support the prison’s canteen. The use of drugs and alcoholic beverages was prohibited and the brothers held daily exercises because during Black August emphasis is placed on sacrifice, fortitude and discipline. Black August is a time to embrace the principles of unity, self-sacrifice, political education, physical training and resistance.

The tradition of fasting during Black August teaches self-discipline. A conscious fast is in effect FROM SUNRISE TO SUNSET (or suggested from 6:00 am to 8:00 pm), this includes refraining from drinking water or liquids and eating food of any kind during that period. Some other personal sacrifice can be made as well. The sundown meal is traditionally shared whenever possible among comrades. On August 31, a People’s Feast is held and the fast is broken. Black August fasting should serve as a constant reminder of the conditions our people have faced and still confront. Fasting is uncomfortable at times, but it is helpful to remember all those who have come and gone before us, Ni Nkan Mase, if we stand tall, it is because we stand on the shoulders of many ancestors.

Jywanza aka Queen Mother Awusi Noamesi II spoke at the anit-slave image rally on Saturday, July 30, 2011. The rally was held on the steps of the Indiana state house. Queen Mother Awusi represents N'COBRA Indianapolis chapter on the Citizens Against Slave Images (CASI) committee.

Queen Mother Awusi pointed out the importance of having positive images to represent our people. "We have always fought and resisted the brutal treatment, psychological and physical, that has been inflicted upon us since we were stolen from our homeland and still affects us today. Our image today is constantly being twisted and distorted. We must take a stand so that our children, grand children and future generations with not have to wage this fight. There will be many more fights for them to fight but they will know "we" have stood up and resisted."

It had been proposed by the cultural trails committee to place this image of a slave in front of the city-county building directly across from the jail. The announcement from the city is one small victory for CASI and the Indianapolis community! It was our efforts and our standing together that brought this decision about.
