One Year Anniversary

Today is the One Year Anniversary of my book blog! While I haven't been actively updating since my Summer abroad with limited internet last Summer to my crazy semester upon returning, I have been doing some behind the scenes work. The Harry Potter post about WB Studio Tour London is almost done! It has some fun pictures from my visit and mostly talks about the filming secrets that they used to bring the books to life. I also have read maybe 50 books since my last review so I have a bunch of notes being sorted and prepared for review posts, which might look a little different since I am trying a new review format. So while right now I haven't been actively updating I am getting to a point where I hope to be posting at least once a week.

So while that is a update on my life and progress to returning to the blogging world, I wanted to take a minute to acknowledge that I have had this blog since March 29, 2013 and I'm quite proud of it! I hope to continue to gain connections and expand my blogging because I am a reader! Reading is my escape from life. I will never stop reading and I enjoy putting my opinions in the world and finding other book blogs to get recommendations from. This blog brought me many wonderful things in the months I began it and I can't wait to get back to that point again.

I hope that despite my extended hiatus my followers will still be with me when I begin posting again in the next few weeks.

My FIRST Meg Cabot Book

I was about to start 5th grade in 2003 when I discovered the amazing author Meg Cabot. Our local library had a program where you earned prizes for reading a certain amount of pages/books depending on your grade. I remember that I was trying to find a book at the library because I was a few books away from whatever prize I wanted. Searching the shelves I picked up the first book of the 1-800-WHERE-R-YOU series and decided to read it. It was devoured in one night. I went back and borrowed the rest of the series from the library and read it all that summer. I eventually purchased them because I loved re-reading the story. The Princess Diaries series was the next series I started and now I own all of these as well. I continued to follow her book releases and have read almost all of her young adult series. Since this is the book that started my currently vast collection of Meg Cabot novels I wanted to review it. I'm quite sure my opinions have changed as a now college junior from a then elementary fifth grader. But this remains my favorite of all Meg Cabot's series because it was my first and I still love picking it up to read, though I read it much faster now because I tend to rush to the parts I love!

Jess Mastriani was my role model then and ten years later I still love her. She has a fiery personality, is intensely loyal, and has an strong moral compass. I'm from the midwest and I strongly relate to her for that, as well as many other personal reasons. I feel she is character that many can make connections with. Jess also became an example that taught me many life lessons. She teaches never to back down from what you believe in, fix your mistakes, and put family first. All things that I still believe today! The first book strongly sets the premise that the rest of the books follow, which is to be expected. But it does it in a subtle way. In many series authors often make the first book an information dump, but Meg Cabot skillfully introduces us to the key characters, sets up the themes for the series, and tells an amazing story. When Lightning Strikes sets up relationships that the reader becomes very involved in, or at least I do! The book leaves you wanting to know whats next for Jess, as well as several other characters. I think that Jess's newfound talent was also a very unique thing. I had never read another book like this when I first read it, and even now I can't think of another book quite like it. Weekend Update: Apologies, Excitement, and News

Where in the World is Lisa Jean?

I mentioned I had news, but then I was too busy to announce it. Now my journeys at an end, but I want you to know why I have been gone from my blog for so long. I had meant to post during these past seven weeks, but I couldn't find the time.

I'm in London!!!

I have been on a study abroad in England touring for a few weeks, but mostly stationed near St. Paul's Cathedral. I even spent a weekend in Scotland. I am sorry that this update is coming when I only have a week left in my eight week trip. But that is what happens when you stay in a flat that limits the data (mb) and minutes you can use each week. And with travel blogging was a lower priority. But next time I am going to disappear I promise to let you know first!

Still I have been working on blogging plans in some ways. I have pictures from travel that are tributes to some of my favorite British Authors. Look forward to a post dedicated to my Harry Potter experience in London and Scotland. Also look forward to a post all about the amazing author of Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austen. I took pictures of some other London landmarks featured in books I have read and re-read so I might do a blanket post for those books or individual reviews. This is still to be decided.

Either way I look forward to sharing some of my bookish experience on this trip with you when I return to the states the week of August 12th. I will also be participating in Meg-A Readers the next week as well, which I am very excited about since I followed that even last year! Lastly, Thanks to all my followers for dealing with an extended absence with little information. I'm grateful you didn't abandon my blog and I hope to continue to make it better!

The second book starts of with the warnings that filled the first book, but then jumps straight back into the action! As you read you see Jack Templar evolve and mature and I also felt that the author's writing evolved and matured. It got five stars because I felt that the second book outshines the first in many ways such as writing style and characterization.
The book is filled with adventure and the unique premise that attracted me to the first book gets more interesting. While definitely still a middle grade book, the sequel more than the original is enjoyable for older audiences. Written for reluctant readers, this book keeps you interested and turning the pages.
The book ends with another hook to keep you wanting to continue the series. I will be interested to see if the third book in the series continues to make the series improve.

The second book of the Rockland Ranch Series, which started with Peace River, Above Rubies can also stand alone. It features the characters you meet in Peace River, but the focus is on the newly introduced Kit Star. Also remember that this is a LDS contemporary romance series. Which means its a clean romance and has religious aspects to it. I enjoy that, but its not for everyone.

Kit Star is another girl with a troubled past that doesn't let it define her. I love the strong female roles that Jaclyn M. Hawkes writes. Kit rises above her past and lets faith conquer fear. I so respect her for that. Some of what she deals with I don't know if I could handle the way she did.

Rossen plays a much larger role as well. I enjoyed getting to know him better. He is the kind of guy I want in my life. Who doesn't love an intelligent cowboy?

The story was well written and its a pretty fast read. Both characters were beyond stubborn which got a little frustrating and I also felt that they communicated with everyone but each other!

Still if you want a clean contemporary romance with musical talent, strong women, overcoming trials, and powerful messages to share then go get Above Rubies!!

She is a powerhouse and a brave person to tough out the hard situations. The mystery was very well-done (I didn't guess right at all till the end) and the book keeps you on your toes. It had solid friendships and intrigue. It was well written and created a unique world. I think the series has a lot of potential. It lived up to it in the first book. Without giving spoilers there was one familial relationship that I felt to be unrealistic, stupid, and detracting. Maybe its setting up for the next book, but it diminished my enjoyment of this one. And I also found the romance poorly done in terms of balance. So while this book has a lot of highlights and is well worth the read, I took a star for these two annoyances that detracted from the overall positive aspects of the book.

First I want to make readers aware that this is a LDS contemporary romance. So if religious aspects or mentions are unappealing to you then don't read this book. I felt that the religious aspect was well written and it added another dimension to the characters. Being a Christian myself I felt it made the characters more realistic to me and think that it doesn't detract from the overall story, but adds to the theme of the book.
This book had a lot of things I enjoyed. I read it on a plane ride where I was delayed and had to sit on the tarmac for over and hour. It was the perfect escape from the diaper smelling plane I was stuck on. I loved horses and enjoyed reading about the cowboys and horse events. Being a horse back rider I could tell immediately that Jaclyn Hawkes was also a rider. She was so realistic when writing about the experience of traveling to horse shows and caring for horses.
I loved Carrie and could see why she had so many loyal friends. Despite the many things that go wrong for her she had this quiet personal strength that I really admired. I felt that she was a wonderful example of persevering through life and the trials we are given.
The reason Peace River lost a star for me is I couldn't quite accept that depiction of the police. While I know that sometimes police forces don't intervene when called upon, it seemed to me that I couldn't understand why they weren't getting involved here and if that was realistic or not. I also found it strange that she mostly stayed in Carrie's perspective, but occasionally would throw in another point of view and it wasn't always a smooth transition.
Overall if you want a enjoyable clean romance that has horses, hot men, and religious tones take a leap of faith and give Peace River a chance.

Undeadly was a book I bought on a day I was feeling low. The premise seemed like it had so much promise. I love mythology and was excited by the idea of modernized Egyptian mythology. So I went into the book with a lot of excitement and found it to be a disappointment.
Undeadly had two major flaws. The first was the plot. The plot was confusing. The book throws you into a world of necromancy with explanations and new facts emerging in an order that had me stumbling to catch up. It also included sub-plots that were hard to follow or understand. I felt like the book included useless aspects as well as wandering plot lines.
The second major flaw was the characters. Molly Bartolucci was the most annoying character! I couldn't connect with her and often she just grated on my nerves. I often felt she behaved much younger and immaturely than any sixteen year olds I have been around. I
I was excited by the idea of a necromancy boarding school, but was left frustrated and was let down. I know that some maybe can overlook these issues, or may disagree that they exist.While I'm not going to read Undeadly again I understand that some people really enjoyed it.

When I first heard the title I was a little thrown, but after reading the book I felt it really fit the novel. I was grateful that Jennifer Thompson gave me the chance to read her novel. I could tell a lot of time went into this work and it really was a success.
The novel is very long, at 57 chapters and 464 pages, but I don't feel like anything could have been left out. I read it in one day because the action makes it difficult to put down! I was frustrated every time I had to stop reading. I also felt like I got way more of a story. It builds up multiple characters and develops the major ones very strongly. I felt like it gives you more then most novels and this may come from the length or from the writing.
Lilliah is a strong female lead who I really admired and connected with. She values her family, sticks to her values, and knows how to take care of herself. But I also like that she can accept help and isn't too proud either. I think that she was a driving force for me in this book, because I liked her reactions and personality.
I love the relationship she develops with Marek. I felt the pacing for relationships and actions were well-done. I know for me I couldn't help but drool over some of the descriptions of Marek and go "I want one!". I also appreciated that this was a clean romance, since I always prefer not having to read that sort of thing.
I think all fans of paranormal romance will enjoy this read. It keeps your attention and is worth a chance. I know she is writing a continuation of two of the side characters stories called The Sound of a Silent Heart and I plan to read it when it comes out!

Top Ten Things to Read When You Need Something Light and Fun
I think I am going to agree with what I have found to be the consensus of this weeks Top Ten Tuesday, which is that this is a great list because we all have days where all we need is a light, fun book to cheer us up! While I had a few I tend to turn to myself, finding ten was harder then I thought. So I decided I'm just going to post the covers of a six books I did think of. They are linked to goodreads so feel free to have a look. These are books that I personally find to be fairly quick and simple reads that remain fun and mostly light!! FYI: This list includes two adult chick-lit novels (Authors: Sophia Kinsella and Shannon Hale)

I thought Jack Templar did a good job of keeping my interest and having a fairly unique premise, but the writing style got bothersome on occasion. I understand that this is probably because it is a middle grade book, but the repetition of this is real and this is not a joke and you need to be careful got both repetitive and a little grating. So it lost a star because I might read it again, but it has little annoyances like this. Still I know it will appeal to middle schoolers (mostly boys, but also for the girl who likes a good adventure).

But beyond my annoyance with Jack's continued warnings, I gave this four stars because I think that middle grade readers will definitely love it and I enjoyed the plot. The premise of monster hunters and Jack's involvement with them is intriguing. Jack's adventures keep your interest and the characters, both main and secondary, are well written. I think the fights were well described and that the book has a good message of believing in yourself.

I plan to get the sequel because it leaves you wanting to know what happens next and the kindle version had a preview for it that caught my attention.

I was contacted by Arundel Publishing and given the opportunity to read Agent Colt Shore: Domino 29 before it is officially released on May 15th. I have to say that not only was I honored to get this opportunity, but I was more excited to read this new teen spy novel.

The Goodreads blurb: When an ordinary kid learns he’s the heir to a secret agent dynasty, F.A.L.C.O.N puts him on a case to protect a famous rock group and find a missing journalist. Before he knows it, Colt Shore has gone from body guard to rock star to full-fledged agent when he learns that a human trafficking ring plans to kidnap a group of teenage girls. It will take more than his ingenuity and skills and a couple of cool gadgets to protect his new friends and rescue the captured girls before it’s too late.

I loved Agent Colt Shore. I stayed up until 2am and read it straight through the day I got it. As it says on the cover, this was a thrilling must-read. It has everything you want from a spy novel, including spy gadgets, mystery, and danger. This is an imaginative book with action and adventure that hooks you from the start.

I loved that Colt Shore remains very relatable. He wants to do his best, but he doubts himself. I found Colt to be realistically portrayed (for a spy novel) and a very charismatic of a character. I could connect easily with Colt and appreciate him as a person and as an agent.

Other things I enjoyed were the connection of the dominos throughout the novel. On the back of the book it says "Start with a domino the size of a piece of gum, and 29 dominos later, you're knocking down one the size of the Empire State Building". Like this analogy the story build with the domino effect, and is used to connect moments in the novel. But it also paces itself so you don't feel like it rushes straight into action. While I wish the conclusion could have been longer, I still felt the rest of the book did a good job of not rushing into the exciting parts. The story really builds as you read it. I can't wait to read the next book in the series, Agent Colt Shore: The Games Begin.

If you like teen spy novels, like Alex Rider by Anthony Horowitz, then you will love Agent Colt Shore.

You may (or may not) have noticed I missed last weeks Top Ten Tuesday. I spent the day studying for my last final and getting ready to fly to Arizona to spend the rest of the week and weekend with my grandparents. But I promised myself that I wouldn't miss this week.

Top Ten Words/Topics That Instantly Make Me Buy/Pick Up A Book

1. Magic

I love books that have elements of magic. A magic system, a magic world, etc.

2. Travel

I want to see the world! Books that include travel (even road trips) are ones that I always try to check out.

3. Royalty

I have a thing for monarchies, royalty, and castles. I love books that feature a monarchy.

4. Mythology

I love all kinds of myths and legends Modern retelling or books that incorporate the ancient gods or goddesses are always interesting to me.

5. Academy

I don't know why, but I always loved the idea of attending a boarding school. So when a book has an academy or boarding school I take a look.

6. Dystopia

I don't know why they are so appealing, but there is something about a someone making the best of a horrible world that I find both cautionary and fascinating

7. Gifted

I love super intelligent people and otherworldly gifts. When someone has something extra about them in powers or smarts, but it isn't magic.

8. Strong, Sassy Female Lead

So this is more of a topic then a word, but I really identify with strong, sassy female leads and love to find books with a independent, strong heroine

9. Clean Romance

I love romance, but with New Adult novels I find myself returning books that give too much graphic detail. I want a romance that isn't explicit.

10. Redemption

I love stories of redemption! It reminds me that we can change and become our best selves.

The blurb gives more away then I think it should, but there is still a lot to learn. This book was amazing! I am so looking forward to seeing the film now and how they adapt it to the big screen.

This book was very, very emotional. I got so invested in the characters and the experience. I could not read the book straight through. I got so involved I had to step away. I was cheering for Ender and horrified by Peter. I laughed and cried. It was a moving experience. I wish more novels were this complex and moving. I can understand why it won awards because I would nominate it myself.

I think my favorite part was how this book made me look at myself. I compared myself to my siblings and really examined our personalities I examined my relationships with other people and how I see myself versus how other see me. I don't think you can read Ender's Game without looking at your relationships with people and looking at yourself.

I will say despite knowing it was a war novel I was surprised at some of the descriptions of violence. I don't tend to enjoy that sort of thing so it was a little bit off-putting. But the complexity of the novel really helped me get paste my own distaste for it.

I absolutely recommend getting this book and reading it before the movie comes out!

This week the question surprised me. Its about reading in other languages.

"I saw a Latin edition of “The Hobbit” last time I was at the bookstore… Do you read any foreign languages? Do you ENJOY reading in other languages?"

I wish I could read in other languages. I did two years of German in high school and learned to read Hiragana, but I have not gotten far enough into a language to be able to read a novel in it. I really want to learn another language though, but currently don't have the time or the money to invest in learning a language. So for know its a future goal. Though picking just one language is going to be the tougher part.

Though I am going to London for the Summer and I'm considering getting the British editions of some of my favorite series. They may be the same stories, but they would be fun to have in my bookshelf!

April 16: Top Ten Tuesday REWIND -- pick a past topic you missed or one you want to revisit!

So since I have missed a lot of Top Ten Tuesday's the list to pick through was long! But this one popped out to me immediately. Top Ten Fictional Crushes. I don't know how I can pick just ten! Also note this are in a random order and a person's place in said order has no bearing on how much more or less I crushed (or am crushing) on them!

1. Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy from Pride and Prejudice. He is a classic literary figure and is the behind the scenes hero. My favorite quote of his "you have bewitched me, body and soul"

2. Harry Potter from Harry Potter. When I read this series I was so in love with Harry! All the things he went through and overcame. He had a pull to him and I fell for it.

3. Gabriel from Clarity. Even in the blurb it describes him as the "the smoldering son of the new detective". He starts out unlovable in some ways, but you fall for him in the end.

4. Numair Salmalín from Wild Magic. A powerful mage who is attractive and acts childish. He definitely grew on me. Swoon!

5. Derek Souza from The Summoning. He is unbelievable rude and unlikable in the beginning but as you see his protectiveness and compassion throughout the series it he becomes more lovable and attractive. I always fall for the misunderstood.

6. Edward Cullen from Twilight. You all know you crushed on him at one point. His gentlemen nature, his protectiveness, his fierce love are all things I appreciated about him.

7. Chase from Raised By Wolves. I just loved him! He is so sweet. I don't know how to put it into words, but the way he treats Bryn made me want him.

8. Levi from Flight. He had this attractive arrogance which is hard to do. And despite some flaws I really loved his devotion and protectiveness.

9. Prince Charmont from Ella Enchanted. I liked seeing him grow and change and come out of the shadows. And he is a prince. Whats not to love?

10. John Hayden from Abandon. A modern Hades with all the smoke and sizzle! He is also very protective, attractive, and loving. I want one!

Totally realizing I have a thing for protective guys! I don't like when they get too overboard, but still a factor that came up a lot.

Because I love Harry Potter and Percy Jackson I was recommended the Jack Blank Adventure series. This Middle Grade series of books had an interesting premise so I gave it a chance.

Covertly reading old comic books is Jack’s only solace. But his life changes forever when he meets an emissary from a secret country called the Imagine Nation, an astonishing place where all the fantastic and unbelievable things in the world originate. Including Jack. Jack soon discovers that he has an amazing ability—one that could make him the savior of Imagine Nation and the world beyond…or the biggest threat they’ve ever faced.

This book kept be guessing and had many twists and turns that you don't see coming. I loved the originality of Imagine Nation and all the things that went along with it. I also really felt for Jack Blank and rooted for him throughout the book. I think that while the originality made it appealing, it could have been more detailed. It leaves a lot to your imagination, but some readers may enjoy this. The reason it lost a star was because while it is a start to a series, it asked more questions then it answered. While this is one way to insure that people continue the series, for this book it made it feel more like a placeholder. So while I recommend it to others, be aware that your going to want to finish the series because it leaves you wanting to know a lot. Still its worth reading if you want an original tale of triumph and courage.

Welcome to another Booking through Thursday question! This week it is:

What’s the last book that made you spring to your feet, eager to spread the word and tell everyone how much you enjoyed it?

My first thought was Evren by Marian Tee. It was free on Kindle one day so I downloaded it, but didn't read it for several months afterword. But when I started reading it I devoured it!

Goodreads blurb: Sixteen-year-old Deli Winters wakes up, dying. A voice asks her if she wants help, no matter the cost, and she agrees. The next thing she knows, a monster is bathing her in fire. But Deli is in love with him and in between dodging the traps of Sanger High’s Queen Bee and working hard at becoming an ass-kicking Evren warrior chick to avenge her parents’ murders, Deli is determined to win Lucian’s heart…whether he likes it or not.

It is an amazing young adult book with magic and dragons! It has mystery/intrigue as well as romance. I feel in love with Lucian and while Deli got annoying, she is so innocent it makes her appealing. I think that it was an exciting read because it was so original. It had so many ideas I had not experienced in other books so that made it even more appealing. And it could have gone graphic, but it didn't which is my preference.

This Thursdays Question:

What’s the silliest (most foolish?) book you’ve ever read? Did you enjoy it?

I spent awhile looking through my bookshelf and kindle cloud before coming up with the answer to this one. I can think of many books that are silly, but the most silly or foolish? I think I'm going to have to say that the Spy Goddess series by Michael P. Spradlin. I enjoyed reading it, but they are very silly.

Goodreads blurb: Not really. I'm just misunderstood. Of course, that's not how the judge saw it. That's how I wound up at freaky Blackthorn Academy. Talk about boring. There isn't even a mall nearby. I mean, what did they expect a girl from Beverly Hills to do? Also, from the start I could tell there was something really weird about Blackthorn: The headmaster, Mr. Kim, knew way too much about me. The class schedule features Intro to Code Theory and Microelectronics. A whole section of the school is off-limits. Then the FBI showed up ... and Mr. Kim disappeared. Well, here's something Mr. Kim didn't know about me: Rachel Buchanan never gives up when there are secrets to uncover. Watch out, Blackthorn Academy

Even the blurb makes it sound a bit silly to me. Its a semi-original idea and I got into the book for the most part, but book seems a bit too childish as you read it. I enjoy spy novels, but this one went about it in a way that just seemed a bit contrived. And the main character is endearing, but hopelessly foolish. It probably was about a 3.5/5 because I enjoyed the read but I also felt it was a bit ridicules overall.

Wild Magic

I wanted to post a review about a book that isn't new to me. This is a book that I read for the first time about six years ago when I was fourteen. I then went on to finish this series (and every other one) by Tamora Pierce. This is a very big repeat read for me because I loved Daine and her story. I have read this book probably five times now. While I recommend you start with Alanna: The First Adventure because it is the first book in the world of Tortall. Reading that one first will prevent you from getting spoilers that Wild Magic has as being a set in the same world with many overlapping characters.

The Goodreads blurb: Young Daine's knack with horses gets her a job helping the royal horsemistress drive a herd of ponies to Tortall. Soon it becomes clear that Daine's talent, as much as she struggles to hide it, is downright magical. Horses and other animals not only obey, but listen to her words. Daine, though, will have to learn to trust humans before she can come to terms with her powers, her past, and herself.

Tamora Pierce is amazing a several things. She creates series kick-butt characters, an immersive world, and amazing magic. Wild Magic is probably tied for my favorite series of hers (with Trickster's Choice which should be read after this and the Alanna Song of the Lioness series). The immersive world of Tortall is irresistible and compelling. If you read all her series in order you get beyond well-developed characters that grow and change.

But speaking strictly about Wild Magic I enjoy the book because we get to see Daine grow and develop. We see relationships between characters progress and strengthen. I love the animals that we meet and the way we get to watch Daine's confidence with animals grow. And most of all I love the magic that brings the world and the book alive. If you want a great fantasy series with magic, adventure, and romance then stick with this book series and you won't be disappointed.
