An exquisite peformance

At 7:30 p.m. Jan. 19, the American Bach Soloists performed Bach's B Minor Mass at the Mondavi Center.

This was the last of a series of performances that started in Belvedere on Friday. The American Bach Soloists expose audiences to music of the 17th and 18th century, more prevalently from Johann Sebastian Bach.

The director/composer of the American Bach Soloists is Jeffery Thomas. The main choir soloists consist of two sopranos, Ellen Hargis and Abigail Haynes Lennox, an alto, Judith Malafronte, a tenor, Derek Chester, and a baritone, Joshua Copeland. There were several notable instrumental soloists: a violinist, Katherine Kyme, a flutist Sandra Miller and the oboist Debra Nagy.

High-stress Parking 1A

This quarter I have truly experienced one of the grotesque troubles of being a UC Davis commuter. Who knew how big a pain parking could turn out to be?

See on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays I don't start my physics class until 12:10 p.m. and on Tuesdays and Thursdays my music class doesn't start until 1:40 p.m.

At first I thought that having my first classes later in the day would be so much better than having 8 a.m. classes like I did my previous quarter but oh how wrong was I.

Out of the dorms, and back at home

My first week of school is over and not living on campus, let alone in Davis, has been trying. I mean I don't mind driving back and forth almost every day, but it is very different from living on campus in the dorms.

Just on Monday after class, I was walking back to my car while passing my old dorms. It felt as if I had this big void in me. Just a year ago I was living in the dorms and after class would come back to friendly UC Davis students eager to talk and chill out in the lounge. In the dorms there was always someone around whether you liked it or not. There would be random fun events, like game night. Our floor would even plan many breakfasts, lunches, and dinners together.

Freshman year went by so fast that I still can't believe I am a sophomore.

There's only two more days left of summer vacation : ( . Starting this week, I will be taking math, organic chemistry, physics, and an intro engineering class. I'm not looking forward to physics very much, but the other classes should be interesting.

Finals are finally over. Yes, that's right I said finals.

This summer wasn't a typical summer for me. Instead, I enrolled in summer sessions to finish up my math series and general ed early. Summer sessions at Davis were a completely different experience. One that I surprisingly enjoyed.

Open a new window

How many people does it take to open a UC Davis Kearney 4 window?

Apparently more than one. Interestingly enough, today my roommate and I had our own version of the sword in the stone game, except the winner of course wasn't knighted.

My roommate Julie and I tried profusely to open her glued-shut window. We pushed with all our might but still the window remained closed. Finally, we gave up the battle once again, for we've had trouble opening this same stubborn window before. So, we called our fellow floor mates.

Explosive situation on campus

Wednesday night my roommate and I were relaxing in our chairs pushing off the loads of homework we needed to finish and instead conversing with two of our other floormates, Joe and Smit about politics and jokes.

Out of nowhere, Julie and I heard a faint voice traveling through the cracks of our partly opened window. The words, "Tercero ... evacuate immediately" instructed by the Davis police officer were about the only words that processed through our heads.

Immediately our two friends Joe and Smit bolted out of our room and my roommate Julie yelled, "grab your laptop!"

Learning in labor and delivery

On Saturdays, I volunteer at the Sacramento Memorial Hospital in the labor and delivery department for one of my internships at UC Davis. As a volunteer I usually just assist the nurses with stocking the rooms, cleaning the rooms, transporting patients and mostly appreciated transporting lab specimens.

I must say my first day wasn't all roses and rainbows. In fact I just cleaned rooms and made beds like a maid would in a hotel. To me it seemed very boring and there were times where I would just sit doing nothing because Saturdays were much quieter than on the weekdays.

A busy winter quarter

It's already week five and registration for spring quarter has begun. However before I get into spring quarter, I'll talk about this quarter.

This quarter, to say the least has been pretty laid back. When I went to register for my winter classes in the fall, I found myself in quite the quandary.

Chemistry 2b had to be my No. 1 priority for classes because certain scheduling was best for going premed. At first I registered for a 7:30 a.m. class because it was the only one open at the time. Then I registered for Statistics 13 and concert band.

Bill Clinton comes to campus

On Wednesday, Jan. 15, 2008, former President Bill Clinton delivered a monumentous speech to around 8,000 UC Davis students, which luckily included me.

Some 3,000 were declined because the ARC didn't have the capacity for 11,000. The word of his arrival spread like wildfire throughout the campus. I luckily happened to find this out because my dear friend, Chelsea Thomas, who called and invited me to come three hours before his timed speech.

I'm glad she called, because I would have never found out. I still don't know how other people found out this information. I know my floormate, Joe, only knew Bill Clinton was coming when a person handed him a "Vote For Hillary" board while he was exercising in the ARC.

Torturous wait for an apartment

At last I can finally rest about apartment shopping, well maybe just for the time being. Primero Grove, one of the two apartments considered on-campus housing, started accepting applications this Monday. So I, with my roommates, turned the applications in. I am relieved that this task is crossed off my list of things to do.

Let me just say though, that trying to live in Primero Grove is extremely difficult, not to mention that their application process was just plain ridiculous. You would think that the leasing office would tell us exactly when they started accepting applications, but no, the leasing office played mind games with us instead.

Hard hunt for an apartment

Just try to envision biking long and hard in the blazing, icy shrill wind.

You may have gloves on, worn long jeans and dressed warmly in more than two layers, but the cold still manages to find you. The wind ices up your ears to where they feel frozen and your face feels like an ice cube in the freezer. These are the cruel circumstances that I have and still need to undergo in order to find an apartment next year.

Yes, I still have two quarters of staying in the dorms and have plenty of time before fall quarter, but to find a really good place, I need to start looking now. One place that caught my eye were the Colleges at La Rue.

A wonderful first quarter

Man does it feel so nice to just sit in front of my computer and listen to music and chat on aol instant messenger.

I don't even remember the last time I had a chance to do this. Relaxation sure does feel nice. I've been so used to always having something to do, always having some task to complete or always having to go somewhere that it feels almost odd that I don't have to worry about anything for awhile.

It feels like all this weight of grades, school, quizzes and tests have been locked away for now. Three free weeks of doing absolutely everything and anything I want to.

It's time to de-stress

One more week and fall quarter is finally finished. I can't believe how fast time has passed by.

Once finals are done, I will finally be on vacation with absolutely no homework to do, unlike high school. Even though college class schedules are more free than high school ones, there seems to always be some academic assignment that needs to be finished.

My roommate and I had a conversation earlier on in the week where it seems that for every task that we finish, three more replace it. The workload seems almost endless and daunting. For now, at least all the classes, midterms, and homework have died down, well at least after today.

Freshman seminars. What are they?

I for sure didn't know what they truly were or what good they would do me. The general consensus of most students are that freshman seminars are just class fillers for those who need an extra unit or two.

In a sense, freshman seminars are that, but I've learned through this quarter that they are more than just units.
