But it isn't often that a woman is chosen as a presidential candidate's running mate! I was very impressed with Sarah Palin's speech and although I was hoping McCain would pick Romney as his running mate, Sarah has convinced me that she will make a very fine vice president. Below, some highlights from her speech:

Notable Quotes:

“The pundits overlooked just one thing when they wrote [off John McCain’s candidacy for president]…the caliber of the man himself. The determination and resolve and the sheer guts of Senator John McCain.”

“Sometimes even the greatest joys bring challenge, and children with special needs inspire a very very special love. To the families of special needs children all across this country, I have a message for you: for years you’ve sought to make America a more welcoming place for your sons and daughters, and I pledge to you that if we’re elected you will have a friend and advocate in the White House.”

“[Small town folks] are the ones who do some of the hardest work in America; who grow our food, and run our factories, and fight our wars. They love their country in good times and bad, and they’re always proud of America.”

“The difference between a hockey mom and a pitbull: lipstick.”

“I guess a small town mayor is sort of like a community organizer except that you have actual responsibilities.”

“In small towns we don’t quite know what to make of a candidate who lavishes praise on working people when they’re listening, and then talks about how bitterly they cling to their religion and guns when those people aren’t listening.”

“Here’s a little newsflash for those reporters and commentators: I’m not going to Washington to seek their good opinions; I’m going to Washington to serve the people of this great country.”

“While I was [effecting ethics reform], I got rid of a few things in the governor’s office I didn’t think our citizens should have to pay for. That luxury jet was over the top. I put it on eBay.”

“When oil and gas prices went up dramatically and filled up the [Alaskan] state treasury, I sent a large share of that money back where it belonged: directly to the people of Alaska.”

“As governor I insisted on competition and basic fairness, to end [oil companies’] control of our state and return it to our people.”

“Our opponents say again and again that drilling will not solve all of America’s energy problems, as if we didn’t know that already. But the fact that drilling won’t solve every problem is no excuse to do nothing at all.”

“We’ve all heard [Obama’s] dramatic speeches before devoted followers, and there is much to like and admire about our opponent, but listening to him speak, it’s easy to forget that this is a man that has authored two memoirs, but not a single major law or even a reform, not even in the state senate.”

“[Obama] is a man who can give an entire speech about the wars America is fighting, and never use the word ‘victory’ except when he’s talking about his own campaign. But when the cloud of rhetoric has passed, when the roar of the crowd fades away, when the stadium lights go out, and those Styrofoam Greek columns are hauled back to some studio lot, when that happens, what exactly is our opponent’s plan? What does he actually seek to accomplish, after he’s done turning back the waters and healing the planet? The answer is to make government bigger, and take more of your money, and give you more orders from Washington, and to reduce the strength of America in a dangerous world.”

“How are you going to be better off if our opponent adds a massive tax burden to the American economy?”

“There are some candidates who use change to promote their careers, and then there are those, like John McCain, who use their careers to promote change.”

“[John McCain is] a leader who is not looking for a fight, but sure isn’t afraid of one either.”

“There is only one man in this election who has ever really fought for you; in places where winning means survival, and defeat means death. And that man is John McCain.”

“For a season, a gifted speaker can inspire with his words, but for a lifetime, John McCain has inspired with his deeds.”

Suprisingly, Reagan's name is not mentioned in all the essays. I really enjoyed the book at the beginning, but as I reached the end it started to get quite repetitive. Bartley, p. 1

“[’Conservative’] is a faith; the humbling perspective that not every change represents progress; a fierce defense of individuals and national freedom; and a healthy skepticism toward institutions too large, too remote, and too impersonal to be truly democratic.” –Bob Dole, p. 9

“The …[conservative] camp always and everywhere is made up of those who just want to be left alone to arrange their own lives, earn an honest living, and raise their children as they believe they ought to be raised. They are skeptical of those who tell them they ought to live differently ‘for their own good’ and leery of a government under the control of such people.” –David A. Keene, p. 30

“Establishment liberals feel so certain that their ideology represents the only valid response to reality that they diagnose any dissent from their ideas as a form of psychological dysfunction.” –Michael Medved, p. 32

“I believe in fiscal responsibility, which means, ‘Don’t spend it if you don’t have it.’” –Trent Lott, p. 39

“While liberals may attempt to change human nature, conservatives try to constructively accommodate it.” –John Kyl, p. 56

“As the organization that led the fight to abolish slavery, enacted constitutional civil rights for all persons, and established voting rights in the Constitution for women and for people of all races and creeds, the Republican Party stands for now and has always stood for liberality in the classic sense: freedom of the individual.” –Christopher Cox, p. 80

“Conservatives tend to believe there is a close and necessary connection between prosperity and freedom—that economic freedom is an essential part of human freedom.” –Edwin J. Feulner, Ph.D., p. 108

“I became a conservative by choice when I finally learned that free choice is a more important guide to action than maudlin sentimentality that encourages reliance on government intervention in managing economics.” –Reed Irvine, p. 144

In my life, I have learned more from noncommissioned officers I have known and served with than anyone else outside my family. And in combat, no one is more important to their soldiers, sailors, marines, and airmen, and to the officers who command them, than the sergeant and petty officer. They are very hard to replace. Encouraging people not to choose to become noncommissioned officers would hurt the military and our country very badly.”
-John McCain, on the hotly debated proposed 4-year college scholarship for veterans

Now I listen to him all the time! I wasn't sure if I was going to like this book or not, but the summary sounded great so I gave it a whirl. Trace is a true blue Republican, and he's not the blithering redneck you might expect a country singer to be (no offense to rednecks or country fans, I like both!). I found myself agreeing with Trace every step of the way and reading some great anecdotes about this guy's life in the process. You don't have to like country music to enjoy this book. Trace offers a refreshing look at politics from someone who's not involved in them. Are we the only offending portion of the planet screwing things up?” p. 58

“So that’s why Tony Soprano could dump asbestos in New Jersey? He bought up a bunch of carbon credits and nobody gave a damn! It’s like a get-out-of-jail-free card, and it’s nuts.” –p. 60

“We all remember the gamous ‘Morning in America’ election commercial that redefined conservatism and his ‘Mr. Gorbachev, tear down that wall’ speech. But I became a real fan of Ronald Reagan after he bitch-slapped Muammar Gaddafi” –p. 86

“I hate to see all those daytime self-help television shows that encourage people to blame everybody but themselves for their problems.” –p. 101

“We know that America is a magnet that draws people from all over the world. But sorry, if you can’t pay the monthly dues and go through the proper channels of arrival, you shouldn’t be able to stay.” –p. 138

“[H]ere in America, we have the freedom and the chance to break loose the chains of poverty and reinvent ourselves with opportunity that comes from education and hard work. It’s never too late or impossible for an American to clean the slate and start anew.” –p. 152

“Some educators complain that teachers might end up only ‘teaching to’ the standardized tests. So what? Isn’t that what it’s always been about?…That’s what life is. We all have to take tests.” P. 164

“There’s never been a meeting of the minds of radical Islam, and there never will be…Liberal politicians, who seem to be suggesting that we pay and appease these rogues, are simply advocating that we repeat history.” –p. 188

“Natalie Maines behaved badly when she uttered those words onstage in England about Bush and Texas. She didn’t stand up and say she was sorry. I’m not saying she should be sorry for what she said. It’s how and where she said it.” -p. 220

“[L]iberals take on causes in order to make themselves feel better about themselves while conservatives do things simply to help other folks out.” –p. 226

“Never a day goes by when I don’t thank my lucky stars. He acknowledged all of the reasons America criticizes president Bush and he explains very rationally why he disagrees. He even criticizes Bush himself a few times...for being too liberal. This is a great read for people who are sick of the one-sided view the media gives of the Bush administration and would like to read intelligent literature exploring the many challenges with which this man has been presented as leader. The one downside is, having been written in 2004, it only covers his first term. I'm looking for Bush Country Part 2! You can click on the book cover or hereto purchase the book for yourself or as a gift.

Worthy Quotes

“Bush asks for double what anyone would imagine he could. He does not offer his adversaries the chance to enter his confidence and then betray it to gain political advantage. Instead, he states his case as strongly as he knows how.” –p. 111

“Bush has the instincts of a successful riverboat gambler. Not the kind of gambler who is so addicted to the thrill of the easy win that he inevitably loses everything, but rather the poker player who wins most of the time by exerting the kind of self-control that a compulsive gambler cannot.” –p. 6

“’Critics of section 215 [of the USA Patriot Act] deliberately ignore the fact that any request for items under the section requites judicial approval. An FBI agent cannot simply walk into a flight school or library and demand records.’” –Heather Mac Donald, p. 143

“Bush would not pursue the Al-Qaeda terror network by indicting its members and attempting to arrest them, as his predecessor, Bill Clinton, chose to do when terrorists first struck the World Trade Center in 1993. Bush believed he had to dig up Al-Qaeda by its roots.” –p. 3

“When [Bush] stood atop the rubble of the World Trade Center with a megaphone and spontaneously told a shouting crowd, ‘I can hear you, the world hears you, and the people who knocked these buildings down will hear all of us soon,’ he instantly ascended from the prosaic to the prophetic.” –p. 240

“’Containment is not possible when unbalanced dictators with weapons of mass destruction can deliver those weapons on missiles or secretly provide them to terrorist allies.’” –George W. Bush, p. 4

“Many Democrats didn’t have the guts either to oppose the war or to embrace Bush. They knew war was probably inevitable, and they were hoping the United Nations would provide them cover from their own antiwar constituents.” –p. 131

Sean Hannity is a little further to the right than I am, but I still loved what he had to say about America. He also exposes Bill Clinton for the incompetent president that he was. Hannity is a passionate debater, and it is evident in his strong viewpoints and the amount of research he does to back them up. Although it 4 years old, it is still very relevant, and a must read for all conservatives. But isn’t electing leaders committed to a[n]…urgent…effort to rebuild our military and protect our homeland security far more important?” –p. 11

“Did Bill Clinton or Al Gore ever bother to distinguish between legal and illegal immigration—or were their only concerns in this area to discredit Republicans and pander to the various immigrant constituencies?” –p. 55

“I think the foremost responsibility of a president really gets down to the national security of this country” – George W. Bush, p. 73

“[I]t is time to enthusiastically embrace the people and policies that are committed to ensuring the survival of our civilization against those who are dedicated to destroying it.” –p. 85

“There’s something odd about the argument that the killing of a mass murderer is morally indefensible, yet the commitment of tens of thousands of troops to defeat his network or regime is legitimate.” –p. 89

“How could a former president [Bill Clinton] suggest that Muslims are somehow justified in killing innocent Americans because of the Crusades? It’s not just untrue—it’s unconscionable.” p. 96

“If you are here in this country and you are somehow offended by this flag, I really and truly have only one message…get the hell out.” –Tom Tancredo, p. 120

“[L]iberals begin with the belief that the money you and I produce is the government’s money. The portion not taxed is what that beneficent government, in all its abundant graciousness, allows you to keep.” P. 215

“[Liberals’] tolerance extends to ideas and people of which they approve—no further, which means it’s not tolerance at all. Among the tolerant Left, there is no respect, much less protection, for conservatives and their ideas.” –p. 232

“[Some people] expect material blessings to be bestowed upon them without any effort on their part.” -p. 281

They suffered the worst during the Depression, but it did not shake their faith in, and fidelity to, America. They did not turn to their religious faith and cultural traditions out of resentment and a feeling of powerlessness to affect the course of government or pursue prosperity. On the contrary, their faith had given generations of their families' purpose and meaning, as it does today.”
-John McCain, responding to Barack Obama's comment on so-called "bitter" Americans

I voted for him in February and I was crushed when he dropped out. However, I can't say this book was a real winner for me. It's not about politics, if that is what you're hoping for. It is basically a blow by blow of every waking second of Mitt's life as CEO of the 2002 Olympic Games in Salt Lake City. Don't get me wrong, parts were interesting, but if you are not obsessed with the Olympics this might be a dry read. You can click on the book cover or Click hereto purchase the book for yourself or as a gift.

Worthy Quotes

“Democrats might say that it’s our government that makes us great, and it’s true that we do have a great government.
