Gain a better understanding of how employers evaluate your online presence and use reputation management to land your next job.

College graduation is upon us, which means thousands of bright-eyed recent graduates are beginning their job search. Each job seeker must recognize that his or her online reputation, how he or she is perceived online, will play a major role in their ability to land a job.

The dynamics of searching for a job have changed considerably. A glut of job seekers has led hiring managers to be more diligent during the hiring process, seeking out as much information about an applicant as possible before making a decision. What does this mean for you if you are a talented job seeker? Your resume is gradually losing value, as companies begin to realize that a paper resume only tells part of the story. Google is now your online resume, and social media is your background check.

91% of hiring managers say they use social media in order to screen job applicants, with roughly half of hiring managers viewing an applicant’s social media profiles before deciding whether to bring him or her in for an interview (according to a study by Reppler). 70% of hiring managers say they have rejected a job applicant because of information they found about the applicant online (according to The Washington Post). Content that prompted hiring managers to reject these applicants included inappropriate photos; inappropriate written articles, blogs and/or comments; and even data on lifestyle.

You can clean and protect your online reputation through a process called reputation management. When a Google search of an individual’s name pulls up negative links or content, they will need to practice reputation management in order to overcome this negative content. Individuals who are not experiencing a crisis, however, often do not recognize that they can also benefit through reputation management.

In other words, your social media profiles might be clean and there might not be anything negative in your search results, but is there anything positive? Having no online presence is like having an empty resume. Hiring managers even say that when they come across a job applicant who does not have a Facebook profile, they become suspicious (according to an article by Forbes). Fortunately Reputation911 can help job seekers build an online presence.

Our engineering team will help you take control of your Google search results by creating search engine optimized websites, blogs, and social media profiles that will show your skills and accomplishments. We will also help you obtain credibility in your industry by arranging guest blogging opportunities and improving your social media influence and fanbase.
Now that it’s finally heating up, pools are beginning to open, and everything is no longer blanketed by allergenic pollen , it is time to do some spring cleaning. Once you have finished a deep clean of your house, focus on your online profiles.

Whether you are a recent graduate who is embarking on a job search or an eligible bachelor who cannot wait to meet dates on the beach or by the pool, your online reputation will play a major role in determining whether 2013 is a summer to remember. Below are three tips for spring cleaning your online profiles:

1. Hide the swimsuit.

When you are spring cleaning your home, it is tempting to unpack your swimsuit and have it all ready to go for summer. Your online profiles, however, should have no sign of your swimsuit, as hiring managers view such photos as unprofessional. The Washington Post found in 2010 that 70% of surveyed hiring managers had rejected job applicants because of something they found about the applicant online. 55% said they rejected a candidate due to inappropriate photos.

2. Get rid of old pictures.

You can free up space in your home while spring cleaning by storing old photo albums and switching outdated, framed photos with newer photos. Unfortunately it is not as easy to make older photos disappear digitally. Content scrapers can take photos that you or a friend shared publicly, host these photos on their site, and then charge you money to have them removed. The only sure fire way to keep old photos from making their way online is by going back and deleting them. Alternatively, you can reduce the chances of a privacy breach by updating the privacy settings for your profile. For Facebook photos, simply locate your Privacy Settings and select “Limit old posts” (the third option) so that all photos you have shared publicly or with friends of friends will switch to only being shared with friends.

3. Don’t be afraid to bring in reinforcements.

During spring cleaning, it is not unusual to hire outside help to ensure a job is done right. Competent contractors can reduce costs, save homeowners time, and deliver improved results for a wide range of services. Something could go wrong if you try to pressure wash your house without any experience, and the same holds true for attempting personal reputation management without experience. Fortunately Reputation911 has helped individuals of all ages, in a wide range of industries, to repair their online reputations. Our engineering team uses an investigative approach to locate and remove old profiles on social media websites, online dating sites, and online directories. Reputation911’s online privacy attorneys will also send cease-and-desist letters to third-party websites that are using your private information without your permission. Our engineering team can also help suppress outdated, misleading, or incorrect content from your personal search engine results so that a hiring manager, potential client, family member, or online date only sees positive content when Googling your name.

Online reviews are a powerful marketing tool as a recent study showed that consumers view online reviews as the second must trustworthy source of information, ahead of every form of online advertising you can imagine. A doctor with many positive reviews will see an influx of new patients while a single negative review could send current patients scrambling to cancel their appointments. Turning your online reviews into an effective marketing tool requires more than just being a good doctor and hoping that patients write positive reviews about their experiences.

Use doctor reviews management to collect positive reviews and regain a positive online reputation.

Unfortunately selection bias makes unhappy consumers more likely to write a review, and this problem is even worse for doctors. When patients leave appointments with their physicians, they generally do not think, “Time to write a really positive review online about my experience.” It is more often the disgruntled patients who will take time out of their busy lives to rant about the terrible disservice they think they have received. A new study by BYU confirms the large gap between the number of patients reading reviews and the number writing reviews, as their data shows that “41% of people have consulted online rankings or reviews of doctors and healthcare facilities” while “only 10% of respondents actually posted reviews.”

Reputation911 can help you close the gap between the number of people who read your reviews and the number of people who write them. Our My Online Reviews™ package uses proprietary platforms to collect patient reviews right from your practice. After our Engineering team analyzes your existing presence across important online review sites, they will strategically place collected reviews ensuring that they receive maximum exposure while suppressing all of your bad doctor reviews.

The aforementioned BYU study also shed some light on how social media and online reviews are playing a greater role in shaping a physician’s online reputation. Data shows that three-fourths of consumers go straight to Google or Yahoo for their initial point of contact, whether they are researching hospitals, doctors, or general health information. One third of those surveyed have visited social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter by the end of their search. No more Encyclopedia Britannica or Yellow Pages! If patients search for you in a location where you have a negative presence or no presence at all, they will move on and consider another physician.

Reputation911 also uses proven reputation management techniques to suppress unwanted content in your Google search results. Do you and your practice lack a social media presence? Were you involved in a lawsuit? Do you want to promote a published journal article? Whether you want to suppress damaging or misleading content or simply build a larger online presence, we can help you take control of your first page search results with My Online Reputation™. Learn more about our doctor reviews management and reputation management products by scheduling a free consultation.

Despite the multitude of websites that show people when they are acting like fools online, including We Know What You Are Doing (learn more) and the newly created Fire Me, individuals continue to make mistakes online that affect their job security, relationship status, and online reputation.

Even though today is April Fool’s Day and you might be tempted to prank your friends, family, and coworkers, you should first consider how your seemingly innocent prank will affect your online reputation. To keep from suffering permanent online reputation damage, avoid these pranks:

“Rickrolling” is a popular form of the bait-and-switch, a prank which seems harmless to some that might negatively impact your reputation.

The Bait and Switch

This prank made Nick Astley’s 1987 song “Never Gonna Give You Up” relevant, as internet users tried to “Rickroll” their friends by tricking them into clicking on the singer’s YouTube video. If you’re thinking of trying something similar, either by sharing a fake news headline or promising a nonexistent photo, reconsider. If someone you do not know, such as a professional you have connected with on Facebook or a family friend, falls for your prank, there is no guarantee that they will laugh it off and move on. These individuals could react by unfollowing you or viewing you in a negative light. While you might not think it is a big deal if a family friend stumbles upon an inappropriate picture because of your “bait and switch” and subsequently believes you to be unprofessional, this could be a problem when you reach out to them about a job opening at their company.

The “bait and switch” could cause you to develop a negative reputation.

Fake Tweets

We get it, you’re awesome. You’re so awesome that your friends and family probably check your Twitter feed every 60 seconds to make sure they have up-to-the-minute updates on your personal life. While a Tweet like “I’m getting married”, “Today I quit my job”, or “I’m pregnant” will surely get your friends and families’ hearts racing, you could come to regret that Tweet. Google publicly indexes some of the most popular Tweets, which means your prank will continue to fool Google searchers for years to come. That’s not ideal when a potential online data searches for you online and finds a recent Tweet announcing your marriage. If you must attempt this prank, try texting your friends and family so that you can do a better job of containing the message.

April Fool’s Day is a good time to enjoy some cheap laughs, but a negative online reputation is no laughing matter. If there is negative, inflammatory, or misleading information about you online, you need reputation management. Repuatation911 can help you take control of your online reputation with our proven reputation management techniques.
The rise of social media has dramatically changed the way modern job seekers find, apply for, and are considered for job openings. Companies are tweeting their open jobs instead of listing them on job boards and job applicants are showcasing their talents on personal blogs and reaching out to hiring managers on social media resume sites such as LinkedIn, Zerply, and VisualCV. One chief marketing officer even went so far as to declare that the paper resume is dead, while other companies are using Twitter to conduct the entire interview process for social media job positions (source).

In order to secure an interview, job applicants must be practicing reputation management at all times. Savvy applicants are not only using reputation management techniques to remove or suppress negative and unprofessional content, but are also using these same techniques to promote positive content. A properly executed reputation management strategy can even improve your credibility in a specific field, transitioning you from a hiring manager’s fallback plan to first choice. Here are a few ways that job seekers can use reputation management to aid in their social job search:

Promote positive content: When job applicants reach the interview stage, it is important for them to use each interview question as another opportunity to sell themselves. Yet applicants should be using existing positive content to sell themselves even before reaching that point. If you have a “Bio” or “About” page on your existing employer’s webpage, promoting that page will give you legitimacy and credibility so that hiring managers know you really work where you said you work. Additionally, positive content about an award that you won, your participation in a charitable organization or event, and content that you have published online should all be promoted to enhance your personal brand.

Remove or suppress unprofessional content: Hiring managers are generally not allowed to ask you about your political affiliation, religious beliefs, or health, but if this information is already available online for them to discover, there is no guarantee that it will not be taken into account during the interview process. A Google search for your name can turn up your quote in the local newspaper when you were asked about your beliefs on a hot button political issue, it could show that you have liked or commented on a religious organization’s blog, and it can even turn up reviews that you have written for your doctor. Poorly worded or profane tweets and public Facebook status updates will also reflect negatively on a job applicant. These are just a few examples of the harmful unprofessional content that could appear in your personal Google search results. By using reputation management techniques, you can remove or suppress unprofessional content so that a Google search enhances your personal brand instead of damaging it.

Remove or suppress negative content: Negative content is a step above unprofessional content because instead of causing hiring managers to be hesitant about hiring you, it will cause hiring managers to stop considering you right when it is found. A mugshot, news article about your arrest, or viral video of you misbehaving will all cause hiring managers to go in a different direction; however, most job applicants do not want to let one mistake define who they are. By using reputation management techniques, you can remove or suppress content related to your missteps and build a positive personal brand. Reputation911 can help with this process.

This infographic by OnlineColleges.com illustrates the growing use of social media profiles.

In our last post, we had the chance to speak with “Internet Man of Mystery” Alex Broches about using a surge in buzz to boost your positive reputation. Today we take a look at the flip side of the coin: what does an individual or business do once they have built a strong online presence and positive reputation? Should they act differently when interacting with customers on social media?

Alex learned about what it takes to preserve a strong reputation while working as actor Andy Dick’s social media intern.

He explained that managing a celebrity’s social media presence is much different than managing the social media presence of a business:

In this particular case, I not only had to post about Andy as an entertainer, but as Andy as a person. You have to find that perfect blend of personal and business. Everyday we would talk briefly on the phone about what he wanted to do online, and I would come up with suggestions for him. I edited all his pictures and posted certain ones during certain times of the day, post upcoming events, and also personal fans messages for him. It was a great experience and I loved working for him. I had come up with several ideas for posts each day. If Andy liked him, he would say go with it and if he didn’t, he would say to bounce the idea. It was quite easy to work with him, our plan was straightforward with growing his fan base and we did just that. We were able to get over 4,000 new “Likes’ in just a few short weeks.

On whether he found himself second-guessing a post because he was not sure how it would affect Andy’s reputation:

Yes, because not only are you dealing with a famous actor, but you are also about to post to thousands and thousands of fans. One bad post will cause online trouble so I always made sure to double check with him on any ideas/content we would post. From this experience, I learned that social media is a very powerful tool. This made me appreciate social media that much more as far as being careful what to post online to your audience. The internet can make you or break you with one click.

After managing Andy Dick’s Facebook page, Alex continued to focus on building websites while offering social media consulting. The reputation he built for himself helped him to land clients:

I think the fact that I was a social media intern for an actor and was on national TV a few times (on MTV’s “True Life” in 2011 and on “TMZ” in 2012) and let people know online through blogs that I was good at what I do. Quality works speaks for itself, and my clients are happy so far.

On whether his clients were practicing online reputation management:

In the beginning when I started taking on clients, it really wasn’t something I paid attention to. But as I started to get more and more clients, I noticed that it was an issue with some businesses. I’ve had a few clients bring it up, and one client actually told me that two bad reviews on Yelp lost them their business. It was unfortunate because one of the client’s workers was acting up, caused a bad experience for that 1 customer and made the business fail. I think sometimes an online reputation is more powerful than an offline reputation.

Thanks to Alex Broches for sharing his thoughts on reputation management. Are you thinking about how what you post on social media will affect your reputation or your company’s reputation? Are your old social media posts affecting your ability to land a job? Are negative reviews keeping customers away from your business?

Reputation911 has spoken in our other blog posts about the importance of using reputation management to build a strong, positive reputation so that when the spotlight is on you or your business, you will not suffer reputation damage. Yet a crisis is not the only time when a spotlight shines on you or your business. In many cases an individual or business receives added exposure because of something positive, and this exposure can be leveraged to build and enhance your online reputation.

MTV’s “True Life” documented Alex’s efforts to build the website CollegeJunkEE.com.

“Internet Man of Mystery” Alex Broches had the chance to do just that and we spoke with him recently about online reputation management, celebrity, and how these two realms overlap. A little background on Alex: he studied Geography at Northern Illinois University but was drawn to the world of social media. Alex began experimenting with social media as he tried to figure out how businesses could increase their social media engagement, and worked as the social media intern for comedian Andy Dick. At the time he was also working on a social dating site called “College Junkee” that he started out of his mother’s basement in 2009. A producer from MTV found about Alex’s website and covered his journey in the TV show “True Life.” Following that exposure, his online reputation grew and he transitioned to offering social media consulting and training.

Alex Broches explains how his online reputation caught the attention of MTV:

A random person on Facebook had messaged me and heard some stories about my goals in the online world. These goals included, well, just making it big. In my senior year of college I had started a website called “collegejunkEE”, which at that time was a site where students can upload class notes and files and help other students study online and chat. He forwarded me an MTV producers contact info to “hit up asap” with my interesting story and an MTV producer from New York showed up to my door 2 months later. At the time, my online reputation was “unique”. I was praised by many people as an internet marketing wizard, and at the same time called by many people “controversial and edgy” with some of my websites that I run. I think the bottom line comes down to that face that I am talented at what I do, and I have had proven results for my own websites and past/current clients.

After appearing on “True Life”, Alex found that his reputation and the reputation of his business grew immensely:

My reputation did change somewhat after the episode aired. I think people thought “now that he’s on TV” he really knows what he’s doing; that kind of thing. Being on TMZ this year and MTV a few years ago helped as far as getting new social media clients. The whole few weeks [after appearing on MTV] were surreal and I was trying to manage all the exposure I had gotten for my business and myself. Before the show, my online reputation was, like I mentioned earlier, “unique and controversial”. After the show, I did get several thousand messages from fans who gave me their input on the show and myself. I had everything from “Your websites are awesome” to “You’re a complete douche”. Also I found my name in quite a few forums after the show with people talking about my websites, which was pretty neat. Sadly, when the show aired, my website was not ready for the amount of traffic the show would bring. My site had crashed multiple times, and was not able to take full advantage of the show. I did however receive upwards of 2,000 emails from fans around the world. A lot of them were internet related questions from fellow internet entrepreneurs who had heard of me previous to the MTV and TMZ show, also received a lot of random messages from fans who wanted to see what I’ve been up to since the show.

In 2012, Alex Broches appeared on “TMZ” via Skype to discuss Facebook’s disappointing IPO.

On “True Life”, Alex was working on developing his website CollegejunkEE. Here is an update on that site:

CollegeJunkEE has been rebranded, and will be live in just a few short days actually as a college party blog and clothing store for college students. After a few months of planning on where to go with the site, I had teamed up with a talented web designer and we will be showing our fans a NEW and IMPROVED site.

Check back next week to hear from Alex about what it was like to intern with Andy Dick, and to hear the reputation management lessons he learned while doing social media consulting for businesses.

While you wait, ask yourself if you or your business has built up its reputation to a level that will allow it to succeed with increased exposure. A press release or AdWords push might bring more people to your company’s site but you still have to have a positive reputation in place to capitalize on that buzz. Fill out the form on the right side of this page or call 1-866-MY-REP-911 to find out your or your company’s online reputation score.

Recently we came across an article on Software Advice about how doctors can shift negative reviews to positive reviews (read the full article here). Online reviews continue to play a major role in reputation management as customers across many industries routinely check online reviews before visiting a business for the first time. A report released by the Pew Internet and American Life Project found that 44% of Internet users look online for information about healthcare professionals. As the new Healthcare bill goes into effect and patients find their doctors are no longer covered by their healthcare plans, more and more patients are going to begin searching online for information about healthcare professionals. If the patient finds good reviews, he or she will be more likely to schedule a consultation, but if the patient finds bad reviews then he or she will look elsewhere.

Every doctor should monitor what is being said about him or her online.

Managing negative reviews can be a tricky process because a business that does a poor job of handling negative buzz will do even more damage to its online reputation. There are plenty of examples of companies that responded to negative reviews so harshly that one comment from an unsatisfied customer ballooned into a full-blown reputation crisis. Software Advice contributor David Fried provided a few tips for how doctors can manage negative reviews, but here are some additional points to consider:

A Response is Better than No Response

Fried brings up some very good points about checking federal and local laws to make sure it is legal for you to contact a patient about his or her review. Fried also mentions the 24-hour rule but be wary of taking too long to respond to a review. Taking some time to think about a negative review before responding will keep you from reacting poorly and escalating the conflict. However, customers who post a negative review do want to see that the doctor has noticed the review and is interested in fixing things. Instead of waiting 24 hours to acknowledge a negative review, use a standard reply similar to the one in Fried’s article (including an apology and a way to reach you or someone in your office to handle the problem) when you first notice the review. Doing so shows that you care and gives you time to digest the review and brainstorm a solution to the patient’s problem. After sending out this reply, you can always go back 24 hours later and add a more personal response to a negative review.

Be Strategic About Collecting Reviews

Collecting positive reviews is a great way to diminish the impact of negative reviews. However, it is not enough to encourage happy customers to create an account on a review site and leave a positive review. Review sites have put measures in place to weed out spam, so an influx of positive reviews from patients could be mistakenly viewed as spam and become flagged or filtered off the page. Additionally, asking patients to only write positive reviews might leave a bad impression and cause patients to suspect that having a positive overall score is a greater priority to you than recognizing and solving problems. Instead of simply asking customers to post positive reviews, create a system for managing online reviews that works to improve your online reputation.

Reputation911 works with doctors to turn online review sites from a source of reputation damage to a strategic advantage that can be used to promote your positive reputation. Learn how our online reviews package has helped doctors gain new patients and improved existing patient satisfaction, and find out how Reputation911 can use reputation management to help your practice by calling 1-866-MY-REP-911 or by filling out the form on the right side of this page.

Last week Reputation911 was able to attend Raleigh, North Carolina’s Internet Summit 2012. Speakers addressed a wide range of topics including advanced SEO strategies, increasing engagement with mobile apps, and the rise of cloud computing. The Internet Summit also had a separate event for startups, Startup Summit, where we were able to network with entrepreneurs from all over the country. The Startup Summit also featured panels where experts shared tips for acquiring seed funding and venture capital funding.

Although these panels primarily focused on the issue of funding a startup, the experts frequently addressed reputation management. Here are some of the thoughts on reputation that were shared by panelists:

Without a business reputation, customers will make decisions based on the CEO’s reputation.

Mark Rostick of Intel Capital

Typically buyers make a purchasing decision depending on how much they trust the company they are purchasing from. When a company is too new to have its own reputation, buyers are instead gambling on the CEO and his or her ability to deliver on promises. Startups should make sure that CEOs and other visible leaders have a positive reputation online, by ensuring that no negative content appears when someone searches for these leaders on Google. Companies can go one step further by building a positive reputation for organizational leaders, and promoting them as experienced, expert individuals. Panelist Mark Rostick of Intel Capital emphasized this point, noting that all businesses that reach the venture capital stage have good reputations. He added that Intel Capital decides which company to invest in based on the people attached to that company, so the reputations of organizational leaders must be on par with the organization’s reputation.

Everyone notices a good reputation.

Sarah Lacy of PandoDaily.com

This thought came up during a panel on seed funding as one of the experts suggested that accelerators and venture capitalists are more likely to invest if someone else has already invested. In essence, many minimize risk by following the herd. Customers are the same way, and they feel that they are minimizing risks by doing business with companies that have a good reputation. Businesses of all sizes can build brand loyalty by recruiting individuals to be brand ambassadors. Asking a former customer to write a review for your business or to like your page on Facebook will make consumers and even investors more interested in working with your business. During a Lunch Q&A, writer Sarah Lacy of PandoDaily.com noted that “when you’re the first person to write about a company, you’re putting your own reputation on the line. Knowing the company has venture capital funding gives them credibility.” Instead of pitching members of the press too soon and being rejected, organizational leaders can build a good reputation that the media is unable to ignore.

A good reputation is built by networking, and then networking some more.

Rob Go of NextView Ventures

Job seekers know that they need to reach out to past connections and make new connections to ease the hiring process, but entrepreneurs must also do a good job of networking so that they can build their business. Once a business owner wants to attract a venture capitalist, he or she should use networking skills to build on a good reputation. Panelist Rob Go of NextView Ventures explained that one of his firm’s leads came in through his company’s blog, and that entrepreneurs have had success gaining the firm’s attention through social media. Go added, “some founders build a reputation on social media or by blogging. Socializing online starts you on second base when you meet [a venture capitalist] face-to-face.”

Halloween is right around the corner. Do you have your costume planned? Have you stocked up on candy to appease kids in your neighborhood? While this American holiday is synonymous with free candy, wild costumes, and innocent debauchery, one Halloween mistake could affect your online reputation.

Why is an online reputation important? When the individual you met at a party is deciding whether or not to call you the next day, he or she will search for you on Google. When a hiring manager is determining who to bring in for an interview, he or she will search your name on Google. Even college admissions officers now use a Google search to learn more about applicants. To keep you from damaging your reputation during this Halloween season, Reputation911 has prepared these reputation management tips:

Don’t share that picture of your slutty Halloween costume.

You probably already know that you should only use professional photos of yourself on LinkedIn, Twitter, and for your Facebook profile picture. However, an unprofessional photo innocently shared via Instagram, SnapChat, or social media can still find its way online and become indexed by Google. These indexed photos then show up on the first page of Google whenever someone searches for you, undermining your online reputation management efforts. Even if your costume is not too revealing, politically incorrect, or unprofessional, it is still a good idea to refrain from uploading a picture of your costume online because you never know who will end up seeing it.

Avoid posting social media updates while at a party.

Halloween parties are a great way to socialize with friends and meet new people, but they also serve as a way for careless partygoers to ruin their reputation. Whether it is a picture of you in an inappropriate costume that gets publicly tagged on Facebook or a poorly worded public tweet you make after one too many drinks, one wrong move at a party will endanger your online reputation. Keep yourself from being tagged in an inappropriate photo by requiring all Facebook tags to be approved by you (click here to learn how to do this) and stay off of your phone to keep yourself from writing unprofessional status updates.

Do not put you or your home in danger by revealing your location

Every Halloween, someone’s house is pelted with eggs or covered in toilet paper. Vandals target houses based on whether or not the home owners are there, as an empty house means that they will not be caught. Burglars can use social media to determine which houses to target, so make sure to protect your privacy by not providing too much information about your whereabouts when posting status updates.

These are just a few of our tips for staying safe and protecting your reputation this Halloween. While the suggestions might seem tongue-in-cheek, keep in mind that everything you share on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr and other social media outlets will be used to shape your online reputation. Before you share something, ask yourself how you would feel if your boss, coworkers, parents spouse, or significant other saw it. If you do not like the idea of your boss or your parents seeing that status or picture, then it is best not to share it.

If you have already shared something that you regret, Reputation911 is here to help. Our engineering team has helped individuals and businesses alike to rebuild or repair their reputation online by removing and suppressing negative content. Ask for your free Online Reputation Report and learn how we can help repair your reputation by calling 1-866-MY-REP-911 or by filling out the form on the right side of this page.
