This tawny stone sculpture is the image of a lady of ancient Egypt, complete with incised hieroglyphic writing. It was probably made for a souvenir, possibly from a museum. The woman is standing against a column that is part of the plinth under her bare feet. She is wearing a wrap skirt composed of very narrow pleats.

This rare example of a memory vessel is a massive primitive wooden bowl covered with over 100 fascinating mementos. The bowl was hand hewn from a solid log; it's darkened with age and still bears the rough tool marks on the inside. The exterior of the bowl has hand hammered tin and copper objects, both large and small, attached with tiny nails. Many of the items are milagros, Mexican religious amulets used to beseech favors and give thanks. Unlike memory jugs or jars, which are covered with putty or plaster and then completely encrusted with trinkets, the adornments on this vessel were carefully spaced to achieve an artful balance.

Anchored by the spectacular tin heart with a copper center, a sampling of the varied range of symbols includes: A cowboy hat, coiled snake, and a couple of scorpions; lots of crosses, large and tiny; several crowns and the Vitruvian Man; parts of the body such as an arm and a leg; an ankh and a peace symbol. Memory vessels like this began in the South as memorials for loved ones. Given the presence of the milagros, we believe this bowl was made in the southwest in the 1800's and then decorated as a memorial at a later date. Most of the memory jugs we've seen (and sold) were decorated with jewelry, coins, mirrors and other personal effects. The strong religious theme of the mementos on this bowl suggest an origin in a southwest town bordering Mexico, probably in Texas.

The bowl itself is 14 inches wide across the top and 10 inches across the bottom. It has a thick rim over 1 inch wide and tapers inside to a 4 1/2 inch diameter bottom. It stands 8 inches tall and weighs an amazing 11 1/2 pounds. The bowl has several narrow age cracks, which do not affect its sturdiness. The trinkets are all in very good condition, with only eight empty nails. Four round white foam pads were attached to the bottom at some point to protect surfaces; they could be easily removed if you wish.

Folk art pieces like this memory bowl are rare and obviously unique. It's a 3-D scrapbook, the symbolism endlessly fascinating, the vessel itself a remembrance of a time, a place and a life.

Lidded Jar OOAK Sgrafitto Original By Dryden

Dryden pottery was founded by James Dryden in Ellsworth, Kansas in 1946 and relocated to Hot Springs, Arkansas, in 1956, where it is still in business making beautiful pottery. This striking deep blue glazed lidded jar is a one of a kind original, signed by the artist C. Roark and dated 86. The throwing ridges are evident on the interior, while the exterior has been incised with hundreds of small ovals that provide a pebbly surface and 8 large flowers with 8 petals each, all highly textural. Both the top of the jar and the lid are incised with tiny notches; the lid fits into the mouth with a cup like that on a French butter dish. This piece is a tribute to the creativity and patience of the artist.

The dry unglazed bottom is signed 'Dryden Roark Original' and dated '86'. The jar also retains its black and gold foil label that states "ONE OF A KIND SIGNED ORIGINAL FROM Dryden HOT SPRINGS, ARK.' It weighs 3 1/4 pounds, is 8 inches tall with the lid, 6 1/2 inches at the widest across the belly and has a base of 4 1/2 inches across. It is absolutely pristine, appearing to be a cabinet piece for the last 30 years. There is one minute rough spot on the lid knob, which was done during the firing; all white spots in the photographs are either a product of the lighting or were the intent of the artist.

Beer Barrel Shaped Mug WGP Jasba Keramik

This sturdy mug was made in West Germany by Jasba Keramic, known for their vibrantly colored ceramics. The company was founded in 1926, producing styles like this one in the 1960's. They're still in business, but production of pottery items stopped in 1971 and they currently make tiles for kitchens and bathrooms. The name JASBA is an acronym of the name of the founder Jakob (JA) Schwaderlapp (S) and the town of Baumbach (BA).
This is form number 402011, with a thick loop handle and a pot-bellied body. The outside of the mug, the handle and the bottom (except for the foot ring) were given a deep red glaze, then coated with a glossy clear top glaze, including the interior. It's decorated with two brown "studded" straps that mimic the metal hoops on a barrel. The form number is embossed on the bottom along with the oval Jasba mark. The clay used is the off-white typical of Jasba, although they occasionally used white clay, also.
This mug stands about 5 inches tall, measures 6 inches across including the handle and sits on a 3 1/2 inch diameter base. It weighs a little over a pound and holds a pint comfortably. It's in excellent condition, appears to be unused, and is ready for your collection.

Gilded Porcelain Basket 1920's ES Germany Erdmann Schlegelmilch

This exquisite porcelain basket was made in Suhl, Germany, by the Erdmann Schlegelmilch factory, founded in 1895 and out of business by 1937. Their green mark on the bottom of the basket was registered in 1902 and includes: PROV SXE (Suhl was part of Saxony for over 200 years), the initials ES and beneath that Germany, all of this enclosed in the outline of a vase.*

The basket is made of very white porcelain clay, with a white lustre glaze on the interior. The exterior has a semi-matte glaze with a faint blush pink tinge and was hand painted on both sides with yellow and white daisies and trailing green vines. The realistically molded handle and the upper and lower rims are heavily and beautifully gilded.
This lovely bibelot is 5 inches tall, 5 inches long and 3 inches front to back between the handles. It's in superb condition, with the gilding and painting still fresh and bright, no crazing and not a chip or crack to be seen. Every aspect of this elegant basket is extremely high quality and will add a sumptuous note to any decor.
* This mark was used in the 1920's, according to "Collector's Encyclopedia of R. S. Prussia," by Mary Frank Gaston.

Tidbit Plate 1932-1938 RS Tillowitz Reinhold Schlegelmilch Gilded

A beautiful tidbit tray hand painted with white and pink roses, this fine porcelain piece was made by the Reinhold Schlegelmilch factory in Tillowitz in what was then German Upper Silesia. The printed green mark on the bottom that reads RS Tillowitz was used from 1932 to 1938.*

There is a gilded loop handle on each side, making it comfortable to use to offer guests a bonbon or petit four. The painting and shading is very well done and the rim is gilded, also.

Everything about this tray is in excellent condition, with very minor wear even to the rim. This probably was a cabinet piece. The width is 8 1/2 inches including the handles; the tray itself is 6 3/4 inches in diameter by 3/4 inch high. It's lovely to use and lovely to display.

Sgraffito Vase Marked Ming Jia Chinese Contemporary

This fascinating vase was made by Ming Jia Ceramics. This pottery is located in southern China in the city of Chaozhou, a famous ceramics center for 1300 years. The vase was created of heavy, cream colored stoneware type clay, the very modern body ridged and finished with a swirl in the bottom and lacking an upper lip and a foot. There are several kinds of decorations on this piece.

The exterior is covered with brushed on, pale brown matte glaze. The technique of sgraffito (cutting through the top layer) was then used in two ways. The first was to cut large irregular shapes that were filled with a glittering high gloss dark brown glaze coating a bumpy texture, surmounted by shiny glazed characters. Sgraffito was also used on the rest of the vase to scratch dozens of small characters through to the cream color. All of the characters appear to be be Chinese, but, since there are tens of thousands of those, we have not attempted to translate any of them.

This vase has an incised mark enclosed in a square on the bottom; it is a large capital letter M, with the name Ming Jia beneath. We tried to capture the mark in photograph #4 but it is difficult to picture. The vase is in wonderful condition; what looks like a chip in photo #4 was actually created at the time the vase was made, as it is partly glazed. There is also a smudged area in the brown glaze, shown in photograph # 2, upper center, that was also done in the making--it's about the size of a thumbprint and may actually be one.

Standing 5 1/2 inches tall, the vase has a 3 1/4 inch wide mouth and a 3 3/4 inch diameter bottom. It weighs just under two pounds. It's not only beautiful but tactile. Very decorative, very intriguing, very Asian....

Picture Frame Petrified Wood, Beach Pebbles & Seashells

This very large antique picture frame was hand made in the early twentieth century from a combination of beach pebbles and various size chunks of petrified wood, with a few sea shells added on the base. Even the "supports" on each side of the frame are pieces of petrified wood. The framework is wood, with the natural decorations glued on and then given a glossy topcoat.

Created by a visionary craftsman or craftswoman, it's reminiscent of the rockwork gardens and grottoes that are built by artists using the materials they have at hand to express themselves and their art.

Overall, this frame stands 11 1/2 inches high and is 13 inches wide and 4 inches front to back. It weighs a substantial 4 3/4 pounds. A photograph or picture can be added from a slot on the back. The actual glassed sight area is 4 1/2 inches wide and 6 1/2 inches high; it will accommodate a 5x7 picture. The bathing beauty picture is a copy we made and can easily be removed. The frame is in amazing condition, with all the rocks, shells and pebbles firmly attached, the glass in fine condition and the wooden frame tightly joined and undamaged. The bottom of the base is covered in yellow felt to protect surfaces.

This is a one of a kind piece of folk art and a fabulous frame for a treasured photograph.

Pre-Columbian Mesoamerican Warrior Sculpture

This tall, heavy jar was molded in the shape of a warrior from the Moche culture which flourished on the northern coast of Peru from about 100 to 700 AD. Moche pottery documented the activities of their civilization, including war. Made of terracotta clay, this Moche male is holding a club and a shield. He's wearing a rolled headdress, a bandanna at his neck and a chin wrap, also. His large staring eyes are painted with cream colored slip, as are many of the other details.

This Moche portrait vessel is hollow with an open spout at the top of the head that has a diameter of approximately 1 1/2 inches. Interestingly, there are tiny markings impressed on the bottom that are not Latin alphabet letters and are unreadable to us. (Zoom photograph #4 and you can barely see them on the foot on the left). We've identified this jar as vintage ---made before 2000---since we cannot state positively that it is pre-Columbian (which is why it's attractively priced).

Standing 11 inches tall, this pottery jar measures 5 inches across the shoulders, 4 inches front to back and weighs 2 pounds. There is light surface wear and a minute hairline crack running at the back of the unmarked foot for about 1/16th of an inch (again, zoom #4 and you'll see it faintly on the foot on the right). The wonderful condition of this handsome Peruvian Moche jar makes it a nice find.

Sculptures of a Young Black Couple

These substantial sculptures of a young black man and woman were carved from solid blocks of beautifully grained wood, possibly African mahogany. The date 1975 is incised on the bottom of each, along with the name Abner. We’ve seen several pieces by Abner, all of fine carvings, but we don’t know if Abner is a first or last name and we’re unable to find further information on him or her.

This couple was, however, sculpted by a master carver. The youthful male with his high forehead, curly hair and collared shirt is very handsome and the young female with her bonnet on her head is very beautiful. He stands 13 ½ inches tall and she is 12 ½ inches. They each stand on 4 inch oval bases and weigh 2 pounds 6 ounces each.

Their condition is excellent; the male has an age split which begins on the left side of his head and continues down into the base. Someone has written in black on the bottom of the female “Mother’s Day 2002”—we cannot imagine doing that to a piece of art but there you are. Both pieces stand flat, but the male one is a little wobbly when you first set him down.

You’ll enjoy these 20th century folk art pieces in traditional or modern interiors.

Bavarian Porcelain Mayo Bowl by Winterling

This is an absolutely pristine example of Bavarian porcelain, made by Winterling in Marktleuthen, Bavaria. The green printed mark on the bottom was used by the company starting around 1950 until they replaced it with a newer mark in 1970.

The pattern is WIG1363, pure white porcelain with a gold rim on the underplate and a brocaded gold upper rim on the mayo bowl. Below that is a row of deep blue scalloping and then a row of pink roses interspersed with a design of tiny ovals and dots. They were probably meant to represent tassels on the points of the blue scallops.

This mayo bowl holds about 1 1/2 cups and measures 4 3/4 inches across the top. The attached underplate has a 6 3/4 inch diameter and the piece stands about 3 inches high overall. The condition is truly like new, with only a small amount of rubbing on the unglazed bottom rims. The gold in particular is in excellent shape. This beautiful piece of porcelain was probably a cabinet piece and possibly never used.

Oil Painting by Zaza Meuli

This beautiful impressionist oil was painted by Zaza Meuli (or Milieu), a noted Russian American artist, born in 1892 according to Askart.com. She was known to be a master with the palette knife and the heavy impasto on this work confirms that.

The wonderful texture and layers add to the gauzy feeling of this painting of a bouquet of pink and white roses with lots of green leaves in an oval brown basket. The background is composed of daubs of gray, pale green, pale pink and white, further adding to the hazy romantic quality of the work.

There is a professionally printed label on the reverse; the printing is in turquoise, partly faded and printed on paper that has yellowed over the years. The label states the following:

The frame size is 18 ½ inches by 14 ½ inches; the outermost wood molding is 1 ½ inches wide, carved and painted in matte speckled gold. There is a middle liner of beige linen and an innermost fillet of high gloss gold. Actual visual area of the painting is 14 ½ inches by 10 ½ inches. The frame has some wear but shows well and complements the painting nicely. The painting is in very good condition; the back dust paper is torn in areas and has some water spots. There’s a wire hanger already installed. Someone, possibly Ms. Meuli, has written in ink Zohe Rose on the label; this is probably the title of the painting.

This work will please anyone who loves impressionist paintings, particularly florals

The whole bowl except for the very bottom is topped with a clear glaze that's very satiny to the touch and rises to a dimple in the center of the bowl. The throwing ridges are evident on the underside and Michael Hoyland's mark, the conjoined initials MH, set into a rectangle with rounded corners, are impressed into the side of the bowl directly over the rim.

The bowl measures 9 1/2 inches across the top, tapering to a 4 1/2 inch diameter round base. It's 2 1/2 inches high and weighs a hefty 2 3/4 pounds. It's a very striking piece of hand thrown studio art pottery.
