That sounded like a very simple statement at the time, but I have to admit that there’s a lot of truth to it.

Think about the best teacher you ever had in school — it was probably a person who introduced you to complex concepts by first relating them to something you could readily relate to or understand. Now, of course, you can argue that, as an IT pro, your job is not to teach people (unless you’re in the training sector).

But you do have to be able to put your theoretical know-how into real work. When an interviewer asks you to explain a technical topic like you would to a non-IT person, what he is looking for is if you can see how technical tools and practices relate to the business as a whole. You can’t sell technology to end-users and executives unless you can effectively explain to them why it is needed.
On a broader scale, this is a form of IT/business alignment — a term you’ve heard so many times in the last decade that it has become jargon-ish. But it is important, and potential employers are looking to see if you have the ability to understand the business and translate technology to shareholders.
http://reservedbits.tumblr.com/

Things I can never remember how to do in Excel

Excel is a good example. I use it every day, but I seldom need to do more than enter data or a simple formula. So when a job requires something a little more sophisticated, I waste a certain amount of time trying to remember how I got it to work before. Then I waste even more time trying to extract a useful answer from online help.

Frustrating, unproductive, and a little embarrassing.
So I made a list of a few Excel techniques I occasionally need but inevitably forget. This is bunny stuff, and not for you power users out there. But if you’re a casual Excel user (or you’re on the help desk but don’t spend much time in Excel yourself), maybe this list will help you cut to the chase.

1: Toggle the display of formulas

When you need to see what’s going on under the hood of a worksheet, you may want to turn on Excel’s formula display. There’s a convoluted way to do this via Excel options (and Excel 2007 offers the Show Formulas button in the Formula Auditing group of the Formulas tab - if you want to remember that). But you can toggle the display on the fly just by pressing [Ctrl] ~. If you select a cell whose formula you want to troubleshoot before turning on the display, Excel will also show you the dependent cells for the formula.

2: Convert a formula to its results

Sometimes, you may need to replace a formula with its results - either to preserve a static value or to optimize your sheet by reducing calculations. There’s a pretty simple trick for this, but a word of warning: Be sure you really want to wipe out a formula before you do it. (There could be undesirable consequences.) In fact, a good practice is to create a backup copy of the workbook as a safety net in case things go awry.

To convert a formula, click in its cell and press [F2] to enable in-cell editing. Next, press [F9] to calculate the formula and display its results. Then, hit [Enter], and your formula will be replaced by the value it produced.

You can also copy the formula and use Paste Special | Values to paste the results someplace else, leaving the formula intact in its original location.

3: Create a copy of an existing worksheet

Excel offers an efficient way to copy a worksheet, either within the current book or into a different one - handy when you need to start a new sheet that includes some or all of the data and/or formatting of an existing sheet. It works like this:

Right-click on the sheet tab of the sheet you want to copy.

Choose Move Or Copy.

Select the Create A Copy check box in the bottom-left corner of the Move Or Copy dialog box.

Choose a different workbook, if desired, from the To Book drop-down list. (That other workbook must be open to show up in the list.) You can also select New Workbook.

In the Before Sheet list box, specify where you want the copied sheet to go within the specified workbook.

Click OK.

4: Start a new line within a cell

This may seem beyond simplistic - until the day you can’t remember how to do it. If you need to create a multiple-line entry in a cell, you can’t just press [Enter] to insert a line break, since that will propel you into the next cell. Instead, you have to press [Alt][Enter].

5: Unhide hidden rows or columns

From time to time, someone will send me a worksheet with hidden rows or columns. I usually don’t need to see the data, so of course I forget how to unhide it on the rare occasions when I do need to see it. It’s easy, though: Highlight the row above and the row below the hidden row(s) - or the column to the left and to the right of the hidden column(s). Then, you can reveal the data in various ways:

Press [Shift][Ctrl]0 (that’s a zero).

Right-click the selection and choose Unhide.

Choose Column (or Row) from the Format menu and then select Unhide. In Excel 2007, go to the Cells group on the Home tab, click Format, choose Hide & Unhide, and select Unhide Rows or Unhide Columns.

6: Enter a fraction in a cell

Say you type 1/4 in a cell, wanting to enter the fraction one-fourth. Ordinarily, Excel will turn the value into a date - 4-Jan. To prevent that, just preface your entry with a zero and a space: 0 1/4. Excel will leave your fraction alone. Without the zero, you’ll see 1/4/2009 (or whatever year you happen to be in) in the Formula bar. With the zero, you’ll see 0.25.

7: Simultaneously copy data into noncontiguous cells

To copy data from one cell into adjacent cells, you just drag the cell’s fill handle across the cells where you want the copied data to appear. But sometimes, you’ll need to copy data into cells that are scattered around the worksheet. The most efficient way to handle that task is to copy the desired data, hold down [Ctrl], and select all the other cells where you want to paste the data. Then, press [Ctrl]V and Excel will insert the copied data into each of the selected cells.

8: Simultaneously enter data into noncontiguous cells

Similar to the previous trick, you can save time when you need to enter the same data into cells that aren’t next to each other. Start by holding down the Ctrl key and selecting all the cells into which you want to enter data. Then, type your data and press [Ctrl][Enter]. Excel will insert the data into all of the cells in the noncontiguous selection.

9: Enter text in the same location in multiple worksheets

This may not come up all that often, but it’s a cool trick when you need it. Let’s say that you’re entering month names as column headers at the top of a sheet - and you want them to appear on your other sheets as well. Click in the cell where you’ll be entering January. Then hold down [Ctrl] and click on the sheet tabs of the other sheets where you want the month names to appear. This will group the sheets so that what you do now affects all of them.

Go ahead and type January. Then (another cool trick coming…), drag the cell’s fill handle to the right across the next 11 cells. Excel recognizes that January is the first item in a built-in series, so it will insert the rest of the month names for you.

To complete the process, right-click on one of the selected sheet tabs and choose Ungroup Sheets from the shortcut menu. If you check those sheets, you’ll see your month names have been entered in all of them.

10: Transpose data from a row to a column, or vice-versa

Once in a while, I’ll set up a worksheet using one structure that seems to make sense, only to realize it would make a whole lot more sense if the rows were columns and the columns were rows. And apparently I’m not alone in this befuddlement, because Excel provides a Transpose option to facilitate the necessary flip-flopping of data:

Select the range of cells you want to transpose and click Copy or press [Ctrl]C.

Click in a new location (not overlapping your selection).

Go to Edit | Paste Special and select the Transpose check box. In Excel 2007, click Paste in the Clipboard group of the Home tab and select Transpose.

You can then delete your original, wrong-structured data.

http://reservedbits.tumblr.com/

Where functional programming fits ?

In the last few years, functional programming (FP) languages and the ideas the languages implement have risen to prominence. This is partially due to various languages that contain some functional ideas becoming more mainstream (e.g., Ruby), and developers learning how to better leverage those functional features. It also helps that the .NET platform (particularly C#) has adapted and adopted many FP ideas and become more of a hybrid model. To further push things along, the Java platform (with Scala) and the .NET platform (with F#) now have full-featured languages that support the OO and FP paradigms at the same time; in .NET 4, F# is given the same weight as C# and VB.NET. Now that most developers have the ability to tap FP languages and concepts, when does it make sense to do so?

Here are a few things to keep in mind if you’re thinking about using FP:

FP code does not have “side effects.”

In FP, there are no literal values, simply functions that always return the same value.

Many FP languages have “lazy evaluation,” where functions are not evaluated until their results are needed; in such a case, if you define “x” to be equal to “y + 5,” “x” will be defined with no value until you try to use the value of “x,” at which point execution returns to its definition, and the value is calculated and provided to the caller. This is a boon (better performance) and a curse (non-deterministic values in some cases) at the same time.

While none of these traits of FP languages should be considered hurdles, they do represent a radical change in thinking. You can leverage FP languages in ways that may dramatically improve the code writing process and the quality of code. However, if you FP languages, you need to be mindful that you aren’t overengineering or overthinking the problem, especially if it requires using a technique or a language that may confuse other code maintainers.

In my experience (which is limited when it comes to using FP in production code), I find that FP techniques and languages shine in algorithmic coding scenarios. Maybe I am stereotyping FP based on its “everything is a function” approach, but I find that FP works very well for that kind of work. Math, for example, is very nice in FP. A few months ago, I saw an F# sample where the author defined various units of measurement as functions that provided conversion, so you could add 10 meters and 45 inches in code perfectly naturally. Another impressive example of FP’s strength was the Xbox Live ranking system; it was rewritten from C# into F#, with about 10% of the total lines of code, and ran at 95% of the speed. Again, it is an example of algorithmic code.

Where FP loses its advantage is in the basic “library glue code” and creation of structure classes that constitutes much of the modern, mainstream software development experience. If your code consists of a lot of classes that look like structures, and most of your “algorithm code” is shuffling properties from one object to another, using FP just will not be worth the effort, unless your project is going to use it anyway.
In summary, FP is not necessarily the answer to all of your development challenges, but it is something worth checking out and seeing where it can fit into your toolbox.
http://reservedbits.tumblr.com/

How to Open/View Excel 2007 files without Excel 2007 Software

If you ever get into a situation whereby you need to open/view an Excel 2007 file (.xlsx) but the computer you are using does not have Excel 2007 installed then these tricks could come in handy. This was particularly very helpful to me when I was checking my email from my friends computer and I received an Excel 2007 file as attachment that I wanted to view immediately but my friend’s computer didn’t have Office 2007 installed.

Option 1

If the computer you are using has Excel 2003 installed then you are in luck. You can just download and install the Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack which automatically converts the excel 2007 file and let you open, edit and save workbooks using Excel 2003.

Option 2

What if you don’t have Excel 2003 installed on the computer? Well you can download and install the Excel viewer from Microsoft which lets you open, view, and print Excel workbooks, even if you don’t have Excel installed

Option 3

You can use Open Office to view the excel files. OpenOffice.org is the leading open-source office software suite for word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, graphics, databases and more.
The same trick can be applied to Microsoft Word 2007 files too. Do you know of any other ways to do this?
http://reservedbits.tumblr.com/

Clear Cache Firefox

In the following Simple Solution, I'll show you an easy way to Clear Cache in Firefox. We will Add a Clear Cache Button to Firefox Web Browser by using an extension or addon called Clear Cache Button and then adding the button to our toolbar. This eliminates any additional steps (I.E. Ctrl + F5) that may be commonly used to Clear Firefox Cache and enables you to perform the task on demand via a single mouse click.

Adding a Clear Cache Button to Firefox:

1. Open Firefox and go to this link: Clear Cache Button
2. Click the "Add to Firefox" Button from the page and follow the steps to install the addon
3. A: In Windows Vista
, many folders that used to be used by earlier versions of Windows have been moved to a new location or given a new name in Windows Vista. However, the old folders can still be seen if you have enabled Show Hidden Files, and they look like the following:

Windows Vista hidden junctions folders

Notice how these folders are displayed with a transparent icon and a shortcut symbol. These folders are what is known as a junction. Junctions work like shortcuts, but in Vista's case look like regular folders with an arrow. The purpose of a junction is to redirect programs that access them to their Windows Vista equivalent. Since junctions aren't really folders, it is not possible to access them, and any attempt to do so will give you an "Access Denied" error.

Here is a comprehensive list of all the junction folders that have been moved in Windows Vista, along with their new location:

XP: Documents and Settings
Vista: Users

XP: Documents and Settings\$USER$\My Documents
Vista: Users\$USER$\Documents

XP: Documents and Settings\$USER$\My Documents\My Music
Vista: Users\$USER$\Music

XP: Documents and Settings\$USER$\My Documents\My Pictures
Vista: Users\$USER$\Pictures

XP: Documents and Settings\$USER$\My Documents\My Videos
Vista: \Users\$USER$\Videos

XP: Documents and Settings\$USER$\Application Data
Vista: Users\$USER$\AppData\Roaming

XP: Documents and Settings\$USER$\Cookies
Vista: Users\$USER$\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Cookies

XP: Documents and Settings\$USER$\Local Settings
Vista: Users\$USER$\AppData\Local

XP: Documents and Settings\$USER$\NetHood
Vista: Users\$USER$\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Network Shortcuts

XP: Documents and Settings\$USER$\PrintHood
Vista: Users\$USER$\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Printer Shortcuts

XP: Documents and Settings\$USER$\Recent
Vista: Users\$USER$\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Recent

XP: Documents and Settings\$USER$\SendTo
Vista: Users\$USER$\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\SendTo

XP: Documents and Settings\$USER$\Start Menu
Vista: Users\$USER$\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu

XP: Documents and Settings\$USER$\Templates
Vista: Users\$USER$\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Templates

XP: Documents and Settings\$USER$\Local Settings\Application Data
Vista: Users\$USER$\AppData\Local

XP: Documents and Settings\$USER$\Local Settings\History
Vista: Users\$USER$\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\History

XP: Documents and Settings\$USER$\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files
Vista: Users\$USER$\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files

XP: Documents and Settings\All Users
Vista: ProgramData

XP: Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data
Vista: ProgramData

XP: Documents and Settings\All Users\Desktop
Vista: Users\Public\Desktop

XP: Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents
Vista: Users\Public\Documents

XP: Documents and Settings\All Users\Favorites
Vista: Users\Public\Favorites

XP: Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu
Vista: ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu

XP: Documents and Settings\All Users\Templates
Vista: ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Templates

XP: Documents and Settings\Default User
Vista: Users\Default
http://reservedbits.tumblr.com/

Configuring Google's new public DNS

s there anything Google isn’t going to do? Google has recently announced Google Public DNS services for Web engines and other systems to query for address resolution. This makes some sense, as Google crawls the Web frequently and has a good idea of where Web presences are located. The goals of this service are to provide an option for current DNS configuration, reduce ISP loads, and make the Web faster.
I have historically used ISP DNS information for all information but have supplemented that with another ISP’s public DNS servers as a secondary server. The thought of Google providing a DNS service is appealing at this point, and I’ve set it on a few servers in my test environment. So far, it works fine as expected.

Google’s DNS offers two IP addresses. They are 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4, which are very easy to remember. Configuring a few systems with this DNS engine is straight forward, and resolves in a standard fashion. Figure A shows a DNS query run against the Google DNS servers:

Figure A

While using this service may seem attractive, there are concerns with using a popular and very public DNS server. Above all, we are not given any information about how much traffic is going to use these addresses. This is not relevant for resolution, as the Google DNS is not authoritative for any domain; but in the security area. Google has outlined a number of security features for this service, documented on the Google Code Web site.
Realistically, I see the Google DNS entries as being used in conjunction with your ISP’s DNS. Do you see yourself implementing Google’s DNS? Concerned about a target like this? In a blog post this morning, Google announced the release of a public DNS resolver called Google Public DNS, one of the things that the company is doing as part of its ongoing effort to make the web faster.

As Google explains in its post, the DNS is like the switchboard operator that takes easy-to-remember Web address - such as Google.com or ZDNet.com - and links them to their more complex IP addresses that come as a series of numbers. In its blog post, Google writes:

The average Internet user ends up performing hundreds of DNS lookups each day, and some complex pages require multiple DNS lookups before they start loading. This can slow down the browsing experience. Our research has shown that speed matters to Internet users, so over the past several months our engineers have been working to make improvements to our public DNS resolver to make users’ web-surfing experiences faster, safer and more reliable. You can read about the specific technical improvements we’ve made in our product documentation and get installation instructions from our product website.

If you’re Web savvy and comfortable changing your network settings, Google is offering detailed instructions on its code blog of how to give Google Public DNS a test-run.
I know a lot about tech and can do my fair share of network troubleshooting but I think I’ll leave this one to the truly savvy. If you decide to give it a run, be sure to chime in on the talkbacks to share your experiences. I’d be interested in knowing if speed difference will really be that noticeabe.
http://reservedbits.tumblr.com/

Labview Digital Signal Processing: And Digital Communications

Product Details

Hardcover: 205 pages

Publisher: McGraw-Hill Professional; 1 edition (May 6, 2005)

Language: English

ISBN-10: 0071444920

ISBN-13: 978-0071444927

From the Back Cover

Create sophisticated DSP virtual instruments with LabVIEW

Take full advantage of all the digital signal processing capabilities LabVIEW has to offer with help from this hands-on tutorial. When something doesn’t lend itself well to the written language, you can insert a voice comment. For instance, you might want to include a personal greeting or clarify a point.
Of course, this feature is dependent upon the creator and the recipient having the appropriate hardware, so it won’t work for everyone. The creator needs a microphone and the recipient needs speakers. If you can’t control the recipient’s hardware, you might want to skip this option. It won’t help to insert a voice comment the recipient can’t hear.

Hardware issues aside, inserting a voice comment is easy:

Display the Reviewing toolbar: From the View menu, choose Toolbars and then select Reviewing; or right-click the background of any toolbar and select Reviewing.

If the Insert Voice icon isn’t visible, add it: Click the Reviewing toolbar’s drop-down arrow (at the right end) and choose Add Or Remove Buttons. Then, select Reviewing and select Insert Voice. In Word 2007, click the Office button and then click Word Options. Select Customize and then select Commands Not In Ribbon from the Choose Commands From drop-down list. Select Insert Voice and click Add and then click OK.

After you add the Insert Voice button, you’re ready to record a comment. Position your cursor where you want to insert the comment or highlight a word or phrase if you want to attach the comment to content.

Click the Insert Voice button.

When Word displays the Sound Object dialog box (which seems to take a while the first time), click the Record button (that’s the red button at the right end).

Start talking.

When you’re finished, click Stop (that’s the rectangle to the left of the Record button).

Close the Sound Object dialog box .

Word will insert a comment balloon that looks just like any other comment. However, instead of text, the comment balloon will display a speaker icon. To play the voice comment, simply double-click that icon.
http://reservedbits.tumblr.com/

Determine physical location of IP addresses with these resources

For any of us that administer some sort of Web-facing resource, logging the IP addresses is necessary but not always very useful by itself. I’ve found it important to have resources lined up that allow me to get a little more information about the addresses that are logged.

For Web server logs, LogMeIn connected IP addresses, and simply checking into my own IP address when using public Internet access, simply having the IP address is not enough information. I’ve used two strategies to get detailed Internet IP address information. One is the free product demo of IP2Location and others include generic Web queries with this Whois query resource that doesn’t offer domains for sale.

Available for free on the Web, these services allow you to put in a TCP/IP address and determine geocoded information. The commercial applications from IP2Location are available among other things to allow Web programmers to put logic into Web-based code to enforce geographic laws, offer products and services relevant to users in designated locations, or provide more descriptive logging.

Using the IP2Location Web engine is pretty reliable. I took a sample of all my systems that I support via LogMeIn, and each entry was correct. For each of these systems I am very familiar with the Internet connection, location, and users involved with them. The one curve ball was one system that uses a mobile broadband connection. The IP2Location information was correct to the provider, but the location was not as specific as it could have been.

To use the IP2Location Web tool, simply place a TCP/IP into the Live Product Demo field. Very detailed results are then returned by the Web service. Figure A below shows a sample query.

Figure A

For corporations that reserve their IP address space, those names will frequently display as the owners of the addresses. Yet, this type of query is not flawless. In the case of corporate Internet connectivity, there are plenty of scenarios where the location would display the Internet connection point and not the actual Web browser or endpoint location as wide area networks or other network technologies may be in use.
The IP2Location Web service is probably one of the quickest ways to get a lot of information about a specific IP address without the added step of resolving it to a DNS name. How do you get curious on IP address information? Doing so makes all that information a bit easier to organize and manage. However, occasionally, you need an overall view — perhaps you’re searching for email from a specific person or company, but you can’t remember where you stored it. Numerous folders inhibit the ability to view all of your mail, as a whole. When you need to work with all of your messages, without stepping through folders, create a special search folder as follows:

In the Mail window, select New from the File menu. Then select Search Folder. Or press [Ctrl]+[Shift]+P.

In the resulting New Search Folder dialog box, double-click Create A Custom Search Folder in the Custom section (at the bottom of the list).

Give the new search folder an appropriate name, such as All Mail.

Click Browse.

By default, Outlook will include Personal Folder and all its subfolders.

necessary, check Personal Folder and the Search Subfolders option at the bottom of the list.) To omit the Junk E-mail folder, uncheck it. You might want to uncheck more than just the Junk E-mail folder. Sometimes, it’s easier to start with all mail and uncheck a few specific folders to exclude.

Click OK twice. When Outlook warns you that it will include all mail in all selected folders, click Yes. That’s exactly what you want.

Click OK to return to the Mail window.

Depending on the amount of mail you have, the process of creating this new search folder could take a few minutes. When Outlook is done, the All Mail search folder will contain a shortcut to every message in your Personal Folders (or the folders you selected). Use this search folder for global searches rather than repeating the same search task on individual folders. By default, Outlook sorts the new search folder by the In Folder field, not by folder structure.

This process won’t include messages in the Inbox, Sent, or Deleted folders, but you can include them by checking them in step 5.

http://reservedbits.tumblr.com/

3idiots Hindi Movie MP3 SOngs HQ Download

<img style="cursor: pointer; This six-core Intel Gulftown processor is from the 32nm Westmere family flagship with 12MB shared L3 cache and compatible with Intel Socket LGA1366 based motherboards. As per the tests, this multi-core Gulftown chip showed 50 percent boost in the performance. These Gulftown lines up CPUs are likely to be dubbed as Core i9 chips.

PC Labs found that 2.86GHz clocked 32nm Core i9 'Gulftown' CPU showed about 50 percent faster video encoding and 3D modeling than the Core i7 with the same clock speed. Other multicore core tests didn't show large gains for the non-optimized tasks. Only when more multi-core utilization friendly applications will be released, the maximum would be made off the six cores. The memory speed and performance may not be as high as anticipated. Though BIOS for the available motherboards didn't offer any support, PC Labs guys managed to over clock the chip to 4.3GHz on the air cooling.

The 32nm die shrink brought significant reduction in power consumption and used less power as compared with its Core i7 and Core 2 Quad counterparts. The current engineering sample was able to carry maximum load at a temperature lower than the Core i7 chip. More efficient transistors are packed in the smaller 32nm die shrink so they will give power efficient performance as compared with the other Socket LGA1366 chips.

It's the additional two cores and hyperthreading support backed by appropriate power consumption that will prove true prowess of Gulftown chip. Intel is rumored to release this hexa-core chip in first quarter of 2010 and might get delayed to early second quarter.
http://reservedbits.tumblr.com/

Google's web analysis tools face German scrutiny

A group of state and federal data protection experts is meeting on Thursday and Friday to discuss whether the use of informational tools such as Google Analytics are legal according to German law.

The weekly newspaper Die Zeit reported that the authorities are looking into ways of discouraging German websites from using Google Analytics, including penalties if necessary.

“We only heard from a third party that they would be meeting this week and want to come up with a resolution in terms of all web analytics and web tracking software,” Google Germany’s spokesperson Kay Oberbeck told The Local on Thursday.

“They are not singling out Google Analytics, but are looking at a general resolution on all the big players in the market.”

The authorities fear that Google and other internet companies could compile profiles of millions of web users, detailing their interests, habits, consumer behaviours, as well as political and sexual preferences, Die Zeit reported. The paper added that what makes privacy experts nervous is the possibility that this data could be combined with fundamentally personal details such as addresses, bank account numbers and health insurance details.

Along with officials from Berlin, Hamburg, and Bavaria, the ULD, an independent centre for data protection in Schleswig-Holstein is expected to attend the talks. The organisation argues such web analysis is illegal and that internet users should have the option to “opt out” of observation by tracking tools.

“Without this opt-out option, it won’t work,” ULD head Marit Hansen told Die Zeit.

Meanwhile Stuttgart data privacy lawyer Carsten Ulbricht told the paper that such data analysis without user permission violated the country’s telecommunications law, which could mean that fines of up to €50,000 apply.

But Google is confident that its Analytics tools remain within European Union privacy laws and Oberbeck told The Local the program only aggregates anonymous user information.

“We have signed on to the Safe Harbour contract between the US and the EU, which complies with the EU’s personal data laws,” he said.

Furthermore the “opt-out” option is unnecessary, because Google Analytics requires all sites that use it to disclose this on their privacy policies and users can choose to reject the cookies it sends via their web browser, he added.

“What may come out of the meeting is subject to speculation,” Oberbeck said. “We don’t know if they will do anything or not.”
http://reservedbits.tumblr.com/

E-Books : Running a Perfect Internet Site With Linux

Product Details

Paperback: 388 pages

Publisher: Que; Pap/Dsk edition (January 15, 1996)

Language: English

ISBN-10: 0789705141

ISBN-13: 978-0789705143

A not surprising excelent book, because the well known experience of the autor. And nothing is coming anytime soon: the final version is at least a year away, the mega giant web company said.

But there was some significant news for the community today. Google made the early code available to the open source community and claims external developers will have the same access to the code as internal Google developers.

All the code is open and sketches of the design documents are available now. The final version of the cloud-based operating system is expected to ship at the end of 2010, before the holiday season, executives said.

Google also provided an early demonstration of the web operating system, which sports a Chrome browser-like interface that features application tabs instead of web page tab and a seven second bootup time that is expected to be much faster on its release.

For example, users will see the same clean tabbed style interface but the tabs on the upper left hand of the screen are for gmail, Yahoo, Facebook and any other web service or application customers use on a day-to-day basis. All of the data, of course, is stored in the cloud.

Executives who showed the demo Thursday said the Chrome OS functions more like a TV than a computer. It is entirely solid state and based on Flash memory storage so there’s no latency that comes with using a hard disk.

The OS uses web-based security model. The software offers a verified boot and cryptographic signature keys that check for and ensure there’s no malware impacted the applications. Like the Chrome browser, it will also feature security sandboxing to isolate one web application from another.

The web operating system will offer auto-updating and synchronization capabilities.

Go To Market

Google is working with partners to specify hardware competence and reference implementations at the hardware level. That is, Google Chrome OS will support only solid state drives and select wireless cards. This means that customers will have to buy a new next-generation netbook or device that is designed for the Chrome OS.

The initial form factor for 2010 is the netbook. Laptops and desktops may follow in the future.

Google expects hardware devices to fall in same price range as netbooks are today. Chrome OS netbooks will be larger and feature a full sized keyboard.

“The code is open. We would not be here if it were not for several large open source projects such as Linux kernel, Ubuntu, Moblin and webskit,” said Caesar Sengupta, Group Product Manager. ”We’ll be a good open source citizen.”

The open source operating system won’t support other browsers natively but third parties including Mozilla and Microsoft can take the code and do Firefox-based and Windows-based versions of the OS.

http://reservedbits.tumblr.com/

keyboard shortcuts to help you deliver a smooth PowerPoint presentation

How do you feel about standing in front of an audience — even a friendly one — to give a talk and run a slide show? If you’re just slightly nervous, things will probably be fine, assuming there are no technical glitches and you don’t lose your speaker’s notes. But if you’re an audience-shy basket case, remembering how to back up to the previous slide while having an out-of-body stage-fright experience is likely to escalate into a full-scale meltdown. Not that I speak from personal experience.

We have published a number of articles aimed at helping people create and deliver effective presentations. (A few links appear at the end of this entry.) And nearly all of them include the words “Be prepared.” They generally mean you should know your subject backward and forward and make sure your presentation will run on the provided equipment.

I’d like to expand that a bit: Learn to drive PowerPoint so well you could do it in your sleep, and you’ll have one fewer thing to worry about.

Here are some simple shortcuts to master so that you can give your undivided attention to the Presentation Angel on one shoulder (”Slow down, make eye contact, don’t read your notes like a zombie; you’re doing fine”) and the Presentation Devil on the other (”Is your fly zipped? Why are your hands shaking like that — are you holding a belt sander? Did your boss just roll his eyes on his way out the door?”)

The shortcuts

Action

Shortcut

Start presentation from first slide

F5

Run the next animation or advance to the next slide

Enter or Spacebar (or click the mouse)

Return to the previous slide

Backspace

Jump to a particular slide

Type the slide number and press Enter

Jump to the first slide

Home

Jump to the last slide

End

Go to a black screen or resume slide show from a black screen

B (or period)

Go to a white screen or resume slide show from a white screen

W (or comma)

End a slide show

Esc or - (hyphen)

Erase annotations from a slide

E

Change pointer to a pen (and display it and the Popup Menu button, if hidden)

Ctrl + P

Change pointer to an arrow (and display it and the Popup Menu button, if hidden)

Ctrl + A

Hide the pointer and the Popup Menu button

Ctrl + H

Hide the pointer and the Popup Menu button after 15 seconds

Ctrl + U

Display the shortcut menu

Shift + F10

Jump to the next hyperlink on a slide

Tab

Jump to the previous hyperlink on a slide

Shift + Tab

Launch selected hyperlink

Enter

http://reservedbits.tumblr.com/
