PandaLabs says hackers are breaking records

According to the latest internet security report from PandaLabs hackers are breaking all established records when it comes to the nefarious business of creating new threats.

The security firm said that it had recorded five million new strains of malware in just the last three months. Alarmingly most were banking trojans, the rest a mix of adware, worms, hacking tools and spyware. Trojans took a 38 per cent share of all infections, adware was responsible for 18.68 per cent, and worms 14 per cent. Country to country, Taiwan was found to have the most active infections, 29 per cent, but is closely followed by the US and the UK, which both have roughly 25 per cent.

The risk of infection continues to worsen, according to PandaLabs, which paints a bleak picture of the future. "We are currently receiving some 50,000 new examples of malware everyday, this compares to 37,000 just a few months ago. There is no reason to believe that the situation will improve in the coming months," explained Luis Corrons, technical director at PandaLabs.

PandaLabs said that crooks would throw almost every resource at their disposal in order to infect the maximum number of machines. It said that these varied from social networking attacks to search engine manipulation. The firm also fingered a few firms for exposing their users to potential risks. It called one of the vulnerabilities patched by Microsoft, 'Striking', and another, 'Alarming'.

What with all these risks out there PandaLabs suggests that users install some web security software. You shouldn't need to look too far to find a supplier of that.

How low is public trust in data security?

New Symantec research released today has found that public confidence in the data security standards of various business sectors is shot to hell.

Unsurprisingly for a vendor looking to shift as many units of its data loss prevention solution as possible, the research paints a pretty grim picture. Of the 1,000 UK adults asked to rate their level of confidence on a scale of one to six, with one the most confident, banking came out top with 3, while retail, telecoms, transport and the public sector fared slightly worse.

Online retailers may have something to think about if this research is to be believed as they scored the worst, with a 3.7 average.

Symantec's senior product marketing manager for data loss prevention, Chi-Chi Liang, did a wonderful job of marketing Symantec's product for data loss prevention, by declaring that the low level of trust can be linked to an increasing number of high profile data loss incidents - many of which have been caused by simple employee error.

"The task for organisations in both countries is to win back customer confidence by reassuring them that world-class data loss prevention measures are in place," added Liang. We can't think whose DLP tools Ms Liang might be referring to.

To take a more glass-half-full view of this research though, isn't it more noteworthy that public confidence is still so high, despite the ever-increasing barrage of data loss incidents from public and private sector?

If most sectors scored around a 3, which is mediocre, then one could say public confidence is more resilient to media scare stories than we perhaps give it credit for.

Second phishing attack targets Facebook users

Facebook users are facing yet another malware attack this week, after security experts warned of a new phishing scam with a nasty payload.

Email hosting provider AppRiver said that the Zbot, or Zeus, botnet is delivering 30,000 messages a minute, and warned users to take extra care with unsolicited emails.

"We have already seen about 1.65 million messages from this campaign. As we've come to expect from Zbot, the phising email is well crafted and could easily trick the unsuspecting recipient into falling for its ruse," Fred Touchette, a senior security analyst at AppRiver, said in a blog post.

"The graphics are well done and all look like something you would see from Facebook. The email informs users that Facebook is updating their log-in system to 'make things more secure', and urges people to click on the update button in the email.

"This should be enough anyone needs to see, considering that Facebook, your bank or anyone else, doesn't need every one of their users' participation in order to update their product."

Clicking on the link leads to a genuine-looking Facebook login screen that asks for the user's password. Another screen then asks them to download an update tool, which is actually the Zeus Trojan that typically targets bank accounts.

"Stay away from these emails. Zeus or Zbot spares no effort in making their attacks appear to be genuine. It is very important to protect yourself by being vigilant," said Touchette.

"If you don't personally know the sender, I would avoid clicking any links in emails, especially when the term 'your account' appears anywhere in the email."

This is the second phishing attack on Facebook users in as many days, following the discovery yesterday of a widespread attempt to trick users into giving away password and login details.

Google Launches New Social Search Experiment!

Google has announced it has introduced a new experiment in search. ‘Social Search’ is said to be a way to find content that has been written or published by specific people… such as friends and colleagues.

Anyone can try the new Social Search, provided you have, and are logged into, a Google Account. The social search actually integrates online blog posts and other sources from Google’s search results pages. (SERPS)

Google can actually look for contacts in your Gtalk or Gmail lists, and information from social websites like Twitter, to build up a list of your ‘friends’ and then cross checks them against posts and online content published by these people, and then Google can display these contents to you in their search results! – We at kingpin-seo feel that this takes Google personal search to a whole new level!

Maureen Heymans & Murali Viswanathan, two Google representatives did however stress that it takes peoples privacy VERY seriously…

It is now actually possible to see search results on the mighty Google from just your online contacts!

This has been a busy year for Google, with several new services launching,and others undergoing heavy updates (such as the Caffeine update for it’s search results). In addition to this, the iGoogle homepage saw several new social tools added to its interface this year.

Also announced a few days ago was the news that Google will start to show twitter tweets in its SERP results, as part of the companies drive to provide fresh, ‘real time’ content to searchers.

Google is seemingly gaining momentum in its new, cutting edge tools and search options, and this is causing many to point out that Microsofts newer search engine, Bing, is getting somewhat left behind.

Bing Introduces Visual Search

It’s a pretty simple concept and one that various search engine developers have been experimenting with for several years: Can users make a successful search using images instead of plain text? While we’ve seen various search engines attempt something like this, either with product images or snapshots of websites, we’ve not seen something quite as large scale or interesting as Microsoft’s attempt to integrate a visual search into Bing.

Bing accounts for around 6% of all internet searches in the UK, although it’s performing over twice as well in the US where Microsoft has invested serious amounts of money into marketing for the search engine, which could become the first serious rival to Google since the search engine took the global search crown.

On their Bing blog Microsoft have announced that visual search allows users to find what they are looking for 20% faster than using standard text links, stating that it’s clear “images play a big part in helping consumers with a variety of search activities.” – Something the popularity of Google’s Image search proved long ago.

While we’re not really sure about Microsoft’s numbers and we’re not terribly impressed that you have to install Silverlight before you can use the function, the visual search feature is certainly an interesting an idea and one we can see catching on the in the future, at least for certain types of searches. It’s unlikely that visual searching will ever replace a standard text search in the vast majority of cases but it could be something we see used more and more to supplement standard searches in the future.

It’s also a great reason to make sure all of your images and image tags are set up for maximum SEO potential.

Trojan attack targets Facebook users

Security experts have warned Facebook users to be on the alert after the discovery of a new password malware scam linked to the Bredolab Trojan.

Email security firm Websense claimed yesterday to have seen 90,000 instances of the attack, calling it a "new wave of malicious spoof email attacks".

The messages purport to come from Facebook and are designed to appear as a simple password reset confirmation. However, a .exe file in the mail contains a hidden virus with a nasty payload.

Websense said in a security alert that the .exe file connects to two servers in order to download additional malicious files. The victim's PC then joins the Bredolab botnet, giving hackers full control.

"This spam email attack is designed to play on the subject at the forefront of users' minds: their password security," said Carl Leonard, Websense security labs manager.

"Falling for this scam could lead to the unsuspecting user becoming part of a botnet. With the recent hack of web email accounts, users would feel more compelled to open an attachment that purports to hold their new password, as they'd be worried who changed it in the first place.

"Our advice for users is to always go directly to the web address you have an account with and reset passwords there."

Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant at Sophos, confirmed that the malicious emails have been spammed out widely across the internet.

"The 'from' address has been forged, and the attached file is in fact a piece of malware. Sophos detects the malware as Troj/BredoZp-M or Mal/Bredo-A," he wrote in a blog post.

"Don't make life easy for the hackers hell-bent on infecting your computer, stealing your identity and emptying your bank account. Exercise caution when you receive unsolicited emails, and protect your computer with up-to-date security software.

Allow More Simultanious Downloads in IE

You can configure Internet Explorer to allow 10 simultaneous downloads (the normal maximum is 2). Copy and paste the code below into Notepad and save it as 'Downloads.reg' (remember where you saved it to):

Tips to Clean PC and Reclaim the Space

I often hear from computer users the complaint that the space on their hard-drive seems to be "shrinking", and sometimes they can't figure out why or what they can do to reclaim disk space.

Outlined in this post are are few useful suggestions on how you can help to reclaim disk space on your hard-drive(s).

Uninstall Programs:

Uninstall programs you don't use and you're sure that Windows doesn't need.
In Windows, click on Start, then open up your Control Panel. In the control panel click on the "Add or Remove Programs" in XP, or for Vista it should be under "Programs / Uninstall a program" or in classic view it's "Programs and Features".

After the list of installed programs loads in, scroll through the list and see if there are programs listed there that you don't use. If you're not sure of what a program is for or what it does, for the time being, I'd suggest to leave it alone as it could be an important program for Windows or some hardware to operate properly. You could do some research for what an unknown program is to get an idea of what it is for and if you need it on your computer or not.

So if you are sure it's a program you don't use or is not needed, click on it to select it, and often times a "Remove" or "Uninstall" button will appear that you can click on. After uninstalling the program(s), it's good practice to re-start the computer to help ensure all changes take effect and clean the memory.

Recycle Bin Tips:

Empty your recycle bin. Of course first be sure there's no files in it that you will need.

By default, the Windows Recycle Bin takes up around 10% of your hard-drive's space.

System Restore Tips:

System Restore can also take up a large chunk of disk-space over time and can grow way too large. To reduce this, you can check out the following site for instructions on how to do this.

In XP, it's easier to do:
To resize windows restore, right click on “My Computer” and choose “Properties” then “System Restore“.
Click on “C drive” (the Drive that you want to resize) then “Settings..” button. On “Disk space usage”, move the slider to the left to decreace the amount of disk space for System Restore. The better size is about 1000-1500mb or may be less that it. Then “Ok” to confirm.

Delete User Account Temp Files:

As you use Windows and various programs on a user account, some temporary files and folders may automatically be created. However, these temp files are not always deleted when they are no longer required, and over time this can add up to a sizable amount of disk-space they use.

So here is a quick and easy way to access these temp file and then you should be able to safely delete them all.

Click Start, then select Run. Now enter the following command: %temp%

This should open up the Temp folder for your user account. You may see a list of folders and files within this Temp folder. These are all temporary folders and files that you can safely delete to reclaim some disk space. Don't delete the actual Temp folder itself, only all of the folders and files within it.

To select all of the files for deletion, click on the top file on the list to highlight it, now scroll all the way down to the last file, hold your Shift key, then click on the last file. This will highlight the whole list. Now right-click on any highlighted file and select "Delete". If a file is currently in use, perhaps an open program is currently using one of these temp files, then you may get a warning that you can't delete it. You can then skip that file, or close any applications running that may be using it then try again.

Once you choose to delete all of these file, they may be moved into your Recycle bin. Once they are in the Recycle Bin, then you can simply empty it to permanently delete these files and reclaim some disk space.

Crap Cleaner to Remove Junk Files:

I also suggest getting a good and free utility that can easily help clean up junk from your computer and regain disk space, CCleaner:

IE Temp Files Tips:

Also, if you use IE browser, reduce the storage size setting for temp files. From the Internet Explorer top menu bar click on "Tools" then "Internet Options". From the General tab, the section that reads "Temporary Internet Files", click on "Settings". You'll see a slider that reads "Amount of Disk Space Used". Move that slider more to the left to save disk-space. Then "OK" everything.

Defrag your Hard Drives:

As outlined in one of my previous posts. I'd suggest to run a disk-defrag on your hard-drive(s) about once a month or so to help reclaim some possibly wasted disk-space, as well it will help to keep things running more smoothly.

Computer users sometimes ask: "How can I speed up my internet connection?"
Well, there are several factors that can determine your connectivity speed to the internet.
You may be limited by what Internet Service Provider (ISP) you're using, what type of service plan you're using, if you're on dial-up or broadband and even geographical location.

However, there are a few tweaks and tips you might do in Windows that could help to improve internet connection speeds. (I've used all these tweaks and utilities mentioned here with good success, but as a precaution though, make a System Restore checkpoint just in case something messes up and you wanted to revert back to your current settings).

How to disable Right click on Desktop?

Lets start:

To use this feature, you will need to be logged into your computer with administrative rights.

1. Go to Start > Run > type REGEDIT and hit enter. Navigate to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

2. Here in right side panel, right click to create a new DWORD value with the name NoViewContextMenu (it is case sensitive), then assign number 1 in value data box.

Adding the registry tweak above will disable mouse right click for ALL users. If you only want to disable for the current logged in user, you should add the registry tweak to HKEY_CURRENT_USER instead of HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.

Free Portable Apps Suite For Windows

For those using more than a computer (think about the desktop/laptop combo, for example), having a portable apps suite around can come in really handy. After all, why bother installing all those programs one by one, when you can simply download a single package and keep it on a thumb drive? If you’re really lazy, you don’t have to install anything – just insert the USB drive into the computer you’re going to work on, then move it to the other one when needed!

PortableApps.com is the address of the site you’ll have to visit to find out more about the package with the same name, and you’ll also be able to download one of those three versions available – Platform Only, Lite, and Standard. Their sizes are 1 MB, 46 MB, and 124 MB – but we are only talking about the downloadable files here. The rest of the things to know… we’ll get to them right in the next paragraph!

The Platform Only version has only 1.3 MB installed, so you can use it with virtually any flash drive available, but it doesn’t come with any programs – you only get the platform you’ll use to download the software and use it on any computer you connect the USB device to. The good part is that this seems to be the only multilingual version.

Moving on, we have the Light suite, with 150 MB installed, and including Mozilla’s Firefox, Thunderbird, and Sunbird, next to ClamWin, Pidgin, Sumatra PDF, KeePass, Sudoku, Mines-Perfect, CoolPlayer+, Pnotes and Abiword.

Finally, there’s the Standard version, a package that requires 355 MB for installation, and includes the same stuff as the Light suite, only that Abiword is being replaced by the portable version of the OpenOffice.org office suite.

Since PortableApps.com has won a lot of big prizes so far, I am sure you’ll love this suite, although there’s always room for better, and the big challenge with it is that new freeware programs worth using will keep popping up regularly, so keeping the suite up to date and adding the best tools when needed will always require a lot of work. Anyway, it was a pleasure to tell you about this free portable apps suite, and I am sure it’s going to be a pleasure for you to use it, too!

Oh, yeah… Did I mention that PortableApps.com also works in Linux, as long as you’re using Wine? Even more, it’s fully compatible with Windows 7!

How to Disable Notification Balloons in XP
If you are annoyed with Windows popping up a balloon notification telling you things you already know every time you turn on your machine, here is a quick tip on completely disabling them.

Click on Start--> Run and type in regedit

Now we will navigate to this path in your registry.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced

On the right pane right click on an open area and choose New \ DWORD Value

You will see New Value #1. Change this to EnableBalloonTips.

Next double click the new registry entry you created. In the Value Data field set it to 0 (zero). Make sure Hexadecimal is selected under Base. Click OK.

Finally restart your system and enjoy the clean boot up with no balloons popping up at you.

Google Wave beta test application

Google Wave, a product considered to boost the online communication will be delivered to about 100000 beta testers on Wednesday (30 Setember 2009). What is Google Wave? Google Wave is an internet application designed to combine services of email, Wiki information, blogs and photo-sharing websites in order to generate a kind of web communication named "wave" or "hosted conversation". The 100000 beta testers will help Google to trace and remove the bugs out of the application before an oficial release scheduled for the end of 2009. The "Wave" application was brought to life by Jens and Lars Rasmussen, the Australian brothers who designed Google Maps.
For more clarity, in the video the Rasmussens explain for about 20 minutes about Google Wave principles.

Uninstalling/ Removing Fedora the easy way

This post is about Uninstalling Fedora from your Computer the Easy way.

I assume before you Dual Booted with Fedora you used Microsoft Windows XP.

i also assume the reason you installed Fedora was to help you in your college course work and reason you are uninstalling is you want to get back to your comfort zone -”win xp”. (my 2 bits :its always betterto stay out of your comfort zone to get an “edge” over your competitors).

if you are still reading this i believe you are determined to remove fedora, maybe you want to install more friendly version of linux (try ubuntu) or you want to regain your precious hard disk space.

whatever it is here is the solution you’ve been looking for.

there are 2 bootloaders basically.

Windows MBR (master boot record)
Linux bootloader (GRUB)

when you installed fedora over XP ,grub was installed as the actual boot loader taking over MBR.

if you delete the fedora partition directly from XP ,you might not be able to boot into either of the operating systems.

there are 2 ways of getting rid of fedora.

1) Install a new microsoft operating system :

if you were planning for installing the latest operating system from microsoft you can do it now. windows 7 RTM is just released and its definitely better than xp.you can download it for free,worth a try if you are not bent on having XP as your soul operating system.This will automatically set MBR as boot loader.All the content on the XP primary partition will be saved under windows.old folder and you wont loose any data this way.

2) I just want to remove fedora please do not distract me.

ok alright .you want to be loyal to xp .i understand. what you seek is what you get.here goes….

step 1: Install XP Recovery Console

How to install the Recovery Console

This article describes how to install the Recovery Console to your Microsoft Windows XP-based computer. To install the Recovery Console, you must be logged on as an administrator.

Although you can run the Recovery Console by starting directly from the Windows XP CD, it is generally more convenient to set it up as a startup option on your startup menu.

To install the Recovery Console, follow these steps:

Insert the Windows XP CD into the CD-ROM drive.
Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open box, type d:\i386\winnt32.exe /cmdcons where d is the drive letter for the CD-ROM drive. In the case of ‘Microsoft Windows XP Professional x64 Edition, type d:\amd64\winnt32.exe /cmdcons where d is the drive letter for the CD-ROM drive.
A Windows Setup Dialog Box appears. The Windows Setup Dialog Box describes the Recovery Console option. To confirm the installation, click Yes.
Restart the computer. The next time that you start your computer, “Microsoft Windows Recovery Console” appears on the startup menu.

Step 2: Use Recovery Console

The Recovery Console takes several seconds to start. When the Recovery Console menu appears, a numbered list of the Windows installations on the computer appears. (Generally, only c:\Windows exists.) Press a number before you press ENTER, even when only one entry appears. If you press ENTER without selecting a number, the computer restarts and begins the process again.

for a list of commands that are available in Recovery Console, type recovery console commands or help at the command prompt, and then press ENTER. For information about a specific command, type help commandname at the command prompt, and then press ENTER.
Type following commands at the command prompt to fix the bootloader.

bootcfg /rebuild fixboot fixmbr

To exit the Recovery Console and restart the computer, type exit at the command prompt, and then press ENTER.

Now you should not be seeing the grub Bootloader when you restart the computer.

step 3:

Boot into windows xp. go to control panel.

select Administrative tools>>computer management>>storage>>disk management>>.

select the partition which contains fedora ,right-click and delete the partition.again right-click and choose “new simple volume” to gain the unallocated space.
