Adapting to the AUN environment has been challenging, especially as a freshman. It has been something I believe many freshmen students struggle with because, we have to adapt to a new lifestyle and environment. This is in addition to the fact that we are outgrowing the teenage stage and developing into adults. Even though adapting to a new community is challenging, AUN makes life easier and more convenient for us as freshmen. . . AUN is very involved in terms of community service, with many programs such as TELA (Technology Enhanced Learning for All). As a freshman, being actively involved in community service development initiatives has taught me the rewards of making good contributions towards life in more than an academic sense. I am grateful to the positive impact AUN has made on my life, and I look forward to carrying it on beyond my college education.

Residential Life unit consist of well trained staff that are available 24 hours as professional resource to assist students in overcoming personal, academic, psychological as well as social challenges. The unit provides genuine help to students by supporting and building their after classroom experience as well as providing a practical leadership skills upliftment and improved moral residential learning programs. We ensure the safety and the security of the residents and university properties and also maintain and improve the physical living environment of the residence halls by overseeing, reporting and follow through of maintenance problems in the residence halls. We are building a sense of community, where collectively we participate in common practice, depend on one another, make common decision and commit ourselves to the overall well being of the students and AUN at large.

To All Students!

It is hard to believe that it is time once again to begin another academic year at AUN. I do hope that the summer has been productive and that you are all ready to resume your academic work and your campus involvement. We have been very busy preparing for your arrival and are excited to get the new year underway. I am including some very important announcements and dates for you to note as you plan your travel, arrival, and engagement over the next few days.

REGISTRATION FOR RETURNING STUDENTS - The registration center will begin receiving returning students on Sunday, August 23rd, beginning at 12:00 Noon. The center will remain open on Sunday until :00 p.m. ALL RETURNING STUDENTS MUST REPORT TO THE REGISTRATION CENTER AND CLEAR BEFORE PROCEEDING TO THEIR RESIDENCE HALL FOR CHECK-IN. Registration will continue on Monday August 24th from 12:00 Noon until 8:00 p.m. Returning students cannot check-in before Sunday August 23rd unless you have been given permission to arrive before then. The Registration Center will remain open from Tuesday, August 25th until Friday August 28th from 9:00 a.m. until 6:00 p.m..

FALL CONVOCATION AND PLEDGE CEREMONY - The Fall Convocation and Pledge Ceremony will take place on Monday, August 24th beginning at 10:00 a.m. in the Commencement Hall. All students are expected to attend this event as we welcome our new students and usher in the new academic year.

FIRST DAY OF CLASSES - Classes will begin on Tuesday, August 25th.

LATE REGISTRATION - Late registration will begin on the first day of classes which is Tuesday, August 25th and the late registration fee will begin. If you have not cleared registration before the first day of classes, on that day we will purge your schedule from Open ERP and you will then have to register over again prior to completing your clearance. This may cause you to lose spaces in classes so I would encourage you to arrive on time and clear registration before the first day of classes. Your classes will become available to those students who are seeking to add a course during the drop/add period. We will also purge your residence hall space.

CLOSE OF LATE REGISTRATION - THE LAST DAY TO REGISTER FOR FALL SEMESTER CLASSES WILL BE TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 1ST. NO STUDENT WILL BE ALLOWED TO CLEAR REGISTRATION AFTER THAT DATE. PLEASE PLAN ACCORDINGLY.

DROP/ADD PERIOD - The drop/add period will commence on Tuesday August 25th and will conclude on Tuesday September 8th.

NEW ID CARD SYSTEM - We have implemented a new ID card system. All students will be provided with a new ID card. Returning students will have their ID card pictures taken, after they clear the Registration process at the Registration center. You must present your old ID card at the time your new one is issued. Because of the upgrade in the new ID card, the replacement cost is now set at 10,000N. It is very important that you keep up with your new card as it contains a magnetic chip that captures your bio-metric data.

CURFEW - We will begin the year with a curfew that will be in effect from 11:00 p.m. until 6:00 a.m. each day. We will evaluate this curfew mid semester and make adjustments as necessary based on security information gathering during the course of the year. This means that students must be on campus by 11:00 p.m. every night. The curfew will be strictly enforced by our security operatives at the main gate of the campus. It is currently in effect.

Please be certain to check your AUN emails often as we will be sending out important announcements regularly during the year.

Byron Bullock

Vice President for Campus Life andDean of Student AffairsAmerican University of Nigeria

DEAN Bullock came to AUN in March 2011 prior to which he served as the Associate Vice-Chancellor for Students Affairs and Campus Life and the Director of the Center for Student Development at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and a top-tier University in the United States. He holds a Masters Degree in Counseling Psychology with a concentration in Student Personnel Administration from James Madison University and a Bachelor degree in English from Lincoln University in Pennsylvania. He has vast experience in budget management, recruitment, retention, students services, judicial affairs and professional development.

A trained generalist in Student Affairs Management, with over thirty five (35) years of practical experience in progressive higher education management, Bullock is one of the greatest allies and mentor a student could possibly have. He has so far succeeded in building a Student Affairs Unit at AUN as well as created diverse leadership opportunities for both students and staff. He held several positions both past and present to his name.

RESIDENCE ALL HALLS STORIES

The Fame of Residence Hall AA lies not with the building itself, but with the residents its houses. It is seen as the starting point for the residents and teaches them a variety of life related issues like knowing their aim and purpose in school, building their grades, managing their time, balancing their studies, school activities/events and their personal lives. In 2013, it became the freshman dorm for girls and its residents always wish to be till their commencement. They see themselves as one big happy family despite their cultural differences, ethical group, background, belief, and a place where they see as their second home.
