The prototype is a near-shore, surge-type wave energy converter (WEC) that is mounted on the seafloor just outside the surf zone and captures energy from waves that pass overhead. In addition to funding from DOE, RME received valuable support from the University of North Carolina Coastal Studies Institute (UNC-CSI) and the North Carolina Aquariums Society which owns and operates the Jennette’s Pier facility where testing took place. RME Senior Engineer Cliff Goudey said, “These tests were our first foray into the ocean after many years of hard work developing computer models and conducting numerous tests in wave tanks.” “We learned a lot about the behavior of our WEC in real-world conditions and now we’ll move on to the next design iteration and ocean trials in what we hope will be a pre-commercial context.” RME CEO Bill Staby added; “This is a landmark event for both RME and the U.S. MHK industry.” “We’re really starting to prove beyond a doubt that marine hydrokinetic (MHK) technologies can be a significant contributor to global energy needs in the near future.”

RME CEO Bill Staby was today elected Chairman of the U.S. delegation to the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) TC-114 standards development committee. As Chairman of the U.S. delegation, Bill will be managing eight project teams that are developing technical standards applied to the marine hydrokinetics (MHK) industry in areas including device performance assessment, resource measurement/characterization, design integrity and operational safety. “The development of standards is critical to the advancement of the MHK industry,” Mr. Staby said. “Without them, MHK project developers, insurers and financiers cannot readily evaluate various risks or rely upon third party certifications.” Bill continued; “I’m honored to have been selected by my peers to lead the U.S. Technical Advisory Group (TAG).” “My goals are to increase the number of U.S. experts serving on our project teams, improve communication and collaboration among team members and effectively represent U.S. interests in international proceedings.”

Resolute Marine Energy was selected as one of six finalists in the 2011 Cleantech Open Global Ideas competition. The Global Ideas competition is a hunt for the most promising clean technology ideas anywhere in the world and seeks to find and reward companies and management teams with “big ideas” for solving some of the most critical environmental and economic issues of our day. One national winner from each country was chosen to compete against the winners from other countries at the global finals in San Jose, California. This year, more than 1,000 applications were submitted from companies and entrepreneurs in over 50 countries around the world. Management teams from 23 countries were selected to travel and present at the Cleantech Open Global Forum and, of those, six were named finalists in the competition to win the $100,000 grand prize.. "We were very proud to be chosen to represent the United States and we were very impressed by the quality of the other contestants" said RME COO Olivier Ceberio. "Even though we didn’t win, being chosen as a top finalist in this extremely competitive international competition is a huge endorsement of our business vision and management team.”

Resolute Marine Energy was announced to be one of the 26 winning startups in the 2011 MassChallenge Startup Competition and Accelerator. The second annual $1M competition launched on March 7 and attracted 733 applications from 24 countries and 34 states. The 125 highest-impact, highest-potential startups were invited as competition finalists to participate in a 3-month accelerator providing intensive mentoring and access to free resources including office space, legal support and targeted introductions to customers and funding sources.

Bert Jacobs, Founder and Chief Executive Optimist of Life is good gave a rousing keynote to a packed crowd at the Awards Ceremony. Bert said he had "three goals in speaking with this group of young pioneers. First, to have a few laughs. Second, to emphasize the important role of optimism in their work. And lastly, to encourage them to include strong social missions which will help to build their businesses and add deeper purpose to their lives."

"The entrepreneurial ecosystem in Massachusett is one of the strongest in the country," said Olivier Ceberio, COO, "and winning this competition is a huge endorsement of our business vision and of our capacity to execute our roadmap. To paraphrase Mr. Jacobs, it is easy for us to keep optimistic when we are focusing on the incredible social mission to provide water where it is needed. We are very proud of being part of MassChallenge and grateful to the incredible accelerator program the MassChallenge team has put up”.

MassChallenge is an non-profit organization that aims to launch the world’s largest startup competition, solely motivated to support and strengthen entrepreneurs.

On Saturday November 5th, RME CEO Bill Staby will participate in a panel discussion at the “Juice 3.0” conference at the Camden Opera House in Camden, ME. The panel will tackle the topic “Risking Energy Revolution: Sustainable Energy and Innovation Funding” with the goal of inspiring conference attendees to make a personal commitment to help solve the challenges facing our planet. “This is the second Juice Conference I’ve attended,” Staby said. “To me, it’s a terrific example of how to harness the creative “juices” of local and regional communities through dialog.” “The Juice conferences have the gravity of TED, but with an added dash of diversity, camaraderie and beauty that is unique to the Maine seacoast experience.”

The Juice Conference (www.juiceconference.org) connects leaders of the creative economy to foster growth and prosperity. Weaving together the arts, technology, and entrepreneurship, Juice inspires innovation by bringing talented people together from widely different backgrounds to build on Maine’s traditions. Juice is a forum where attendees can learn, exchange ideas, share success stories and provide input to shape the development of strategies for Maine’s future.

RME attended the 7th annual Rural Energy Conference which is sponsored by the Alaska Energy Authority and was held in the capital city of Juneau on September 26-29, 2011. RME CEO Bill Staby remarked “I was really shocked by the challenges facing Alaska’s rural communities when it comes to energy costs.” “Many of these communities are 100% dependent upon diesel generators for heat and power and, due to high fuel costs, are paying the equivalent of more than $0.60/kWh.” “We think that, for certain of these communities, wave power can significantly lower energy costs and thereby help stem the flow of out-migration which is so threatening to their viability."

RME COO and project Principal Investigator Olivier Ceberio said, “this grant, along with funding from private capital sources, will allow us to finish development of our wave-driven desalination system and thus start providing relief for the millions of people worldwide who lack access to adequate supplies of clean fresh water.” “We wish to thank all our federal funding partners, but especially the Department of Energy and the Department of Interior, for sharing our vision of how technology can contribute to a more healthy, peaceful and productive world.”
