NightWaves hit us up with some slick material after my Fabian post a while back, and now I’m getting around to sharing the love with you all (And there was much rejoicing!)

Well, first some background. NightWaves hails from LA and aim to bring back more lush, synthed out dance out melodies (and less RAWR RAWR DANCE GRGGLR Bangers –or whatever it is that Shaun calls them). Self described as :

a walk down the beach at sunset with the Pacific ocean crashing right next to you

they definitely have a discod-out, almost-french-house-jam style going on –good tracks for evenings and afternoons alike

“Even Money” is one of those tracks that treats you to an unexpected wanna get up and dance feeling after about 3/4’s of the build up. Now for those of you with no patience, I guess that sucks, but for everyone else its the making of a good track to use in a set!

NightWaves - “Even Money”

“Blue Dress” is just as funky, in the same vein and just as much fun.

NightWaves - “Blue Dress”

Since these style tracks work best in mix form (maybe you remember my May mix? Or that I even mix? Because I forget that sometimes) here’s quality 50 min mix of Binary and Valerie artists abound!

NightWaves Presents: The Dreamwave Hour

Also, since this post is very nicely timed, The Binary Collective is putting on their first event tonight (October 6th) at the Dragonfly in Hollywood, CA. Admission is FREE, so all you west coast kids go party it up. You can check the full flyer for the event here, or you can find out more info via the Binary Blog

If you dig any of this, be sure and check out some of the other Binary Artist:
Fabian
On Off On

Sometimes, I get what I want. From a press release:

Chicago by way of New Orleans duo Telefon Tel Aviv has signed to
BPitch Control, who will release the band’s third official
full-length, Immolate Yourself on January 20, 2009 - it’s the band’s
first official full-length in five years. The band has remixed tracks
for the likes of Nine Inch Nails, Apparat and Bebel Gilberto, to name
a few. The band’s previous albums were released via Chicago label
Hefty Records. They will also tour North America this Fall with
Ghostly artist Matthew Dear.

This is where I begin prancing about like the gross dirty southerner I actually am, acting the fool and doing the dirty bird ’til the cows come home or the Falcons win again (no chance of either). TTA? On BPC? Finally, after years of me bemoaning the state of electronic music in THIS VERY BLOG, something GOOD has finally happened. The TTA duo made one of my favorite electronic albums ever, the lush, R&B-storming heartbreaker Map Of What Is Effortless, almost a half-decade ago. I wrote and wrote and wrote about them elsewhere, to the point of becoming fairly fucking obsessed, and then…then they vanished. Now, to see them re-surface on BPC, the single most forward-thinking, cutting-edge, never-bought-into-the-fake-Justice-electro-war tech-tronic label in existence at the moment? I feel like I’m playing Fantasy League Dance Music All-Stars. This means that a conversation BETWEEN THE GUYS IN TELEFON AND ELLEN ALLIEN HAD TO OCCUR. It probably went something like this:

Hi, is this is to be the Telefon? I am is to is the Ellen Allien.

   Sup?

You would like to have been make a new the music with as to for being my label, no yes?

Suhweet. That kid at that blog will effing love that.

I am having the hooray! Now we techno party!

Ellen? We are two dudes who make sad, heartbreaking works of staggering genius, all right?Ok. We don’t dance. No Way. We just take our Louis rags out and wave them around in the air. We take our Gucci rags out and wave them around in the air. Now we must get back to constantly breaking up with our girlfriends and being alone in dark rooms with tinkley things.

I assure you, that’s how the conversation went.

Telefon Tel Aviv: Helen Of Troy

Gauzy and fuzzed as hell, this is the first taster of Telefon’s forthcoming BPC debut and third full-length original album. There is a part of me that misses the operatic, aching soul stylings, but if this is the new direction I can acclimate.

Telefon Tel Aviv: I Lied

From the beautiful Map Of What Is Effortless album, this is Telefon then (and I can’t assume it’s them now).

Telefon Tel Aviv: Street Spirit

A typical Telefon re-working of a Radiohead classic, into something hushed and something that walks in the realm of both dreams and nightmares.

If you haven’t heard Edwin Van Cleef before.. you’re in for a treat (And no, not the Edwin Van Cleef that used to own people in the WoW beta –he one-shot my lock at the time ;_;). He’s slowly been sneaking up as one of my favorite producers and remixers to look out for. I haven’t posted him up before (always meant to, but just dropped the ball..) but he hit us up with his new remix this week, and now I can make a relevant post about him.

Yay!

His latest is a synth-bliss remix of DatA (who, if you’re following along at home, has gotten some Res Lovin’ in the past). Its very much a sunrise/sunset kinda track and gets people unassumingly bouncing along to the beat. Man, so the track came on again as I’m proofing my post, and I’m digging it more and more –totally a track you’ll need to play a few times before you pass judgment.

DatA - “Rapture (Edwin Van Cleef Remix)”
LINKS: DatA | More DatA

His remix of “Heartbeats” is also one of the best remixes of this year, IMO. Its a about a half a year old or so now? But I still rock out to it all the time and always get people coming up to me asking what it is.
Just.
Stellar.

Grum - “Heartbeats (Edwin Van Cleef Remix)”
LINKS: Grum

As an added bonus, here’s some original production work as well. It hearkens back some to that Kavinsky sound, but “Tracer” throws in a bit of chip with a bit more of a funkier bassline then what you normally get when that comparison is made.

Edwin Van Cleef - “Tracer”

Also, here’s his track “Radius”.. its a bit similiar to “Tracer”, but it ups the chip synths a bit and is a lot more trancey.

Edwin Van Cleef - “Radius”

So sail on over to his MySpace and leave a hot one.. and remember: don’t fuck up the pull!

We Plants Are Happy Plants doesn’t just have super fun name, he also makes super fun music! I first stumbled upon him through some hype digging and was totally hooked by his “Superheros” remix (which quickly ended up in my deejay playlist, but never quite made it onto Res). As I do, I friended him on his social networking site of choice to keep tabs (as I do with tons of artists). Well the the other day I get an update saying he’s got a new original track out called “Trance Steel”.

And you know what?

Its good!

Stuck somewhere between a fun trancey dance track and the harder edge electro sound, its a track that should work on a variety of dance floors.

We Plants Are Happy Plants “- Trance Steel” (320)

His remix of Bronksi Beat’s “Small Town Boy” is light and synthy as well, and totally worth the listen:

Bronski Beat - “Small Town Boy (We Plants Are Happy Plants Remix)” (320)
LINKS: Bronski Beat

Finally.. the track that brought him to my attention. While the “8 million remixes a day of Daft Punk Era” seems to have died out (can I say thankfully?… Because I just did), there’s still people who are making quality edits/remixes of Daft tracks that haven’t been remixed to death. WPAHP totally accomplishes that here, with a stellar edit of “Superheros” (from the 2001 release: Discovery). The original is super french house and dancey, and WPAHP notches that up a bit and gives it more floor pounding bass to keep the kids moving. “A+” edit in my book.

Daft Punk - “Superheroes (We Plants Are Happy Plants Remix)” (320)

Be sure and swing by his MySpace and give a hearty welcome. You can also download more of his remixes (for free!) from his Four-On-The-Floor remix pack

Keep it dancing!

We sat down with Julian of The Presets recently to talk about the current Cut Copy/Presets co-headline tour, as well as everything from clothing, to being audiophiles, to new music and just about everything in between. The two New York dates are currently SOLD OUT, but ATLANTA kids: your show is NOT! The last time they played there ,everyone there was a sweaty mess and had giant smile from ear to ear after from dancing all night. So, if you haven’t gotten your tickets for that show, I’d recommend to do so now!

Relevant Dates:
Sep 21 2008 7:00P SOLD OUT! Webster Hall SOLD OUT! New York City, New York
Sep 22 2008 7:00P SOLD OUT! Webster Hall SOLD OUT! New York City, New York
Sep 27 2008 8:00P Masquerade Atlanta, Georgia
(All dates are included beneath the cut)

Also, Julian wanted to make sure we passed this along:
The Presets will be playing BEFORE Cut Copy –so be sure and get there early!

Here’s the full 20 minute interview for your listening pleasure as well. Its been a while since you heard my voice on here, so hopefully you’ll find it as lovely as my dog does..

Today is impossible. Yesterday was the same. I predict the same for tomorrow. My head is a bleak place, not in the way an atrocious Dickinson poem pretends to be but more like a silent space-scape: a vast void. Into that scape, then, not land but ether, comes this set from intelligent Dubstep pioneers Kode 9 and Space Ape.

Kode 9 and Space Ape: Live for Giles Peterson

Performed and recorded live for Giles Peterson’s BBC show on the 24th of July this year, this bleeding-from-the-cut-at-the-edge-of-beyond set from the man who is Hyperdub Records (essentially, the home for that beating-heart, pumping-blood futuretech dubstep sound that’s gaining steam every day) is the soundtrack to manic moods and paranoia. With MC/future-poet Space Ape less “rapping” than discussing, presenting, dangling the unknown and the hopeless just in front of the bleak sonic architecture, the stuttering and stammering kicks and heavy low-end that Kode 9 layers underneatth him, this set sounds like the embodiment of futureparanoia. When Space Ape breathily intones on “the mechanics of stress…”leaving a pause, an emptiness that Kode 9 fills with some of the heaviest, most world-altering shit you’ve ever heard, all I’m able to gasp is “this is what I wish Radiohead sounded like”. And it is. Though people talk about Thom Yorke being the harbinger of the future, this stuff makes him sound achingly dated and, worse yet, feeble.

This is a 27 minute trip through bleakness and brilliance.

Anyway, back to the MMMan. MMMatthias gives this a bit more glitchy, in your face action while keeping some of the pseudo annoying epic synthed guitar out of it. Pretty good remix for dancefloors and playlists alike.

Unlike most artist right now, hard does not equal fidget (thank fking god!) so you get to actually listen to these all the way through without having to skip the verses!

He’s the newest artist on Binary -an LA based family of musicians- who I beleive was started by the NightWaves kids.

“Alpha” is my favorite of the two –slick little lead in, and some killer hooks to keep the energy up mid way through the night.. I expect the kids will enjoy this one.

It could be David Foster Wallace’s suicide. It could be any number of things. I’m pensive and ponderous and have that not-wonderful ennui that involves thoughts of running. This, then, is the perfect soundtrack:

The Enemy: This Song Is About You (Rollo and Sister Bliss mix)

There’s something about this, this post-rave post-post grime UK street-rock not-punk that rings reminiscent, to these ears, of Springsteen standing in a steel factory and pumping his fist in the air. And that’s not a bad thing. Rather, UK group The Enemy, no relation to the undies-wetting GA-based former Drum N Bass heart-throb (thankfully), takes a Streets-esque approach to a chronicle of LDN-town and sets the bar fairly high by aiming totally low: what’s going on right *now*. Faithless’s Rollo and Sister Bliss spin spin sugar out of webs of bleakness, and it’s fitting, then, that the first time I heard this was as the proper intro to Sister Bliss’s recently-released Nightmoves mix.

There’s something about the handeling of this sense of unease, of restlessness, in it being turned into a slow-burning prog-trance anthem, that raises the hairs on the back of my neck and hands and sends chills down my spine. I raise issue with the placement of this remix on Nightmoves:this isn’t an opening-moments kind of remix. This is midway through the end of the night, raising questions that can’t be answered and causing unease, angst, that has to be remedied through movement rather than stasis.

Personal favorite Metronomy dropped their latest offering “Nights Out” to a UK Release recently and a digital copy has been on repeat for a bit now. It comes as this huge refreshing set of sounds, bleeps and oddly disjointed synths which coalesce into this massively appealing listening experience. Most of their stuff seems unavailable for purchase in the US, so looks like you’re going to have to wait/dig around for the album.

Anyway, in celebration of this release (and in true Hacks style): here’s a collection or remixes/mashups for your enjoyment!

First, an original from “Nights Out” .. this has been floating around in various forms for a while now, but completely encapsulates Metronomy’s sound:

Metronomy - “My Heart Rate Rapid” (V0)

From earlier this year.. a very solid breaky remix:

A bit trancey, but that’s what Kris Menace does best

Metronomy - “Heartbreaker (Kris Menace Remix)” (320)

Pretty solid mix, kinda grungy and a bit harder.. good for the middle of a set.

Metronomy - “Heartbreaker (KODH remix)” (320)

Nice little edit/mixup from the Mad Decent crew… only 128 though, so be wary of its usage!

From waayyy back in the day (Maybe you remember from one of my Mobius sets?) It just screams fun and is a perfect way to end this post.

“Nights Out” is available via Play and also via Amazon.co.uk. As I said, no US release seems to be set (but if that’s otherwise, please let me know!)

Visit them on MySpace OR Facebook and leave a hauntingly cryptic message for ‘em
