Kilauea Point National Wildlife Refuge (Point NWR) was established in 1985 to protect and enhance migratory seabirds and threatened and endangered species and their habitats. The focus of the refuge is to expand and enhance existing habitats for those species they are protecting. Learn more about this refuge and all the amazing animals and sights to be seen!

The refuge is home to thousands of migratory and resident birds including: mōlī (Laysan albatross), ‘ā (red footed booby), koa‘e ‘ula (red-tailed tropicbird), koa‘e kea (white-tailed tropicbird), ‘iwa (great frigatebirds), ‘ua‘u kani (wedge-tailed shearwaters), kōlea (Pacific golden plover), nēnē (Hawaiian goose, threatened), ‘a‘o (Newell’s shearwater, threatened), and pueo (Hawaiian short-eared owl). You can also spot humpback whales, green sea turtles, spinner dolphins, and Hawaiian monk seals from the Humpback Whale Marine Sanctuary just offshore. The refuge supports one of the largest populations of nesting seabirds in Hawai‘i.

The refuge is also home to the historic Kīlauea Point Light Station. The lighthouse sits on the northernmost point of Kauai and for 62 years the light guided ships safely along Kauai’s north shore. The Kīlauea Point Light Station is a significant historical site, featuring a notable lighthouse and Fresnel lens.

For more information regarding visiting hours, the refuge is open Wednesday through Saturday from 10am to 4pm. The full schedule of hours and events is available on the refuge’s website. Visitors must arrive before 3:30pm and the refuge is closed on major federal holidays, such as Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Day, as well as the Saturday before these holidays. Reservations are required for all adults 16 and older, check out their website here to make a reservation. Upon arrival entry, visitors must buy a pass at the entrance, bring cash and a photo id for the transaction.

Passes and entry options include the ability to buy pass at the entrance, where beautiful passes such as the America the Beautiful pass, golden age pass for seniors, and other federal passes are accepted. These beautiful passes not only grant access but also symbolize entry to the refuge’s stunning landscapes and wildlife. Pass holder entry is available, and a pass holder can select the interagency pass holder entry option during booking; pass holders must be present for entry. Passes admit the pass holder and up to three additional adults. Interagency pass holder entry is a dedicated option for those with qualifying passes. Kamaʻāina pass is available for Hawaiʻi residents with a valid state id, providing special access and discounts. Hawaiʻi residents can also purchase site-specific annual passes with a valid state id. A valid state id is required for Hawaiʻi residents to access these discounts or passes. Military personnel may use a military id for entry or discounts. A photo id is required for all pass purchases and to verify eligibility for discounts. Mobile users can make reservations or buy passes via their mobile devices.

The parking lot is conveniently located near the entrance, with a paved path leading to the visitor center. Visitors needing assistance can use the golf cart service from the parking lot to the visitor center.

Stop 2: Hadley Fruit Orchards

This stop in the nearby Cabazon area is another great option for satisfying your date shake craving. Make sure to go straight to the café to order this treat as there is usually a line, but it’s always worth the wait. They also have an incredible backstory, with the business being launched in 1931 by Paul Hadley and his wife Peggy. They were incredibly successful until 1951 when a fire made the couple switch courses and sell their goods at a roadside stand. Now it has turned into a destination that might even have a tour bus or two parked in the lot. As for the date shake itself, this one is chunkier with bits of dates throughout the blended treat. 

Stop 3: Great Shakes

Located in Palm Springs, this stop is a great place to indulge in unique shakes, floats, malts and sodas made from their premium ice cream. Not to mention the delicious toppings they include on top, these shakes are not only delicious but picture perfect too!

Stop 4: Lappert’s Ice Cream

Here you can find a vast milkshake assortment made from the best ice cream, and of course the popular date shake is included as well. Their version of the date shake involves a smooth date paste, made daily in-house, that they blend into their ultra-premium date ice cream. It may look different from the others as some of that paste can stick on the side of the cup, but it’s just as delicious!.

Stop 5: Jus Chillin’

Located in the busy downtown Palm Springs area, this treat shop not only has the famous date shake offered but you can also indulge in self-serve frozen yogurt, Hawaiian-style shaved ice, and scoops of gelato. They also use a similar method as Lappert’s Ice Cream mentioned above and mix the date paste into vanilla ice cream.

FOR THE MOUNTAIN BIKER

If you’re looking to step it up a notch and take it off road, there are a number of great options to make your Tahoe mountain biking adventure a memorable one!

TAHOE RIM TRAIL

Kick off your adventure on the Tahoe Rim Trail. This trail that circles all of Lake Tahoe offers a wide variety of routes and sights, so whether you’re looking to climb to a peak, head out to a beautiful waterfall, or coast through gorgeous wildflowers, you can find it all in a breeze.

The Picnic Rock Vista Trail from the Brockway Summit Trailhead is a great first climb, as this easy 3 mile out and back rewards you with a stunning 360 degree view of Lake Tahoe at the top. For a tougher challenge, tackle the Martis Peak Trail from the same trailhead, which becomes a nearly 10 mile out and back with an incredible ride downhill awaiting you after getting to the top. The Painted Rock Loop is another great climbing option on the TRT, featuring incredible scenery throughout the 10 mile ride.

For a more scenic off-road ride, the Page Meadows Loop is bursting with wildflowers, and it’s a fantastic family adventure. Take it easy on the mostly flat 1.4 mile loop, or you can do the full Page Meadows Loop and turn it into a 13 mile all day adventure!

FLUME TRAIL

On Tahoe’s East Shore, the Flume Trail awaits. This iconic 14-mile single track offers breathtaking lake views and a thrilling climb of over 1000 feet in the first four miles. Start at Tunnel Creek Café, take the shuttle to Spooner Lake State Park, and ride back while soaking in the scenery. This trail does traverse across a number of steep drop-offs, so fair warning to those that are afraid of heights.

FOR THE ROAD BIKER

Start your road biking adventure on the stunning Lake Tahoe East Shore Trail. This 3-mile coastal path connects Incline Village to Sand Harbor State Park and is perfect for the whole family. Enjoy the ride and make it a beach day by stopping at one of the many beach access points along the way.

Their hours are 8:30 to 11am for breakfast every Thursday, Friday and Saturday. For dinner, they are open from 4pm to 8pm every Friday and Saturday.

Potato Chip Rock

Potato Chip Rock is considered one of the more difficult trails in San Diego County with a 2,000+ ft. elevation change. Those who are brave enough for this challenging uphill hike will run into a uniquely shaped “potato chip” rock at the end of the trail. This is the perfect spot to pose and snap your photos so you can boast about your conquest!
