Don’t Trust Your Vacation to a Stranger: Survey Reveals What Travelers Need to Know Before Booking a Summer Vacation Rental

Wyndham Vacation Rentals survey finds 88% of do-it-yourself hosts dread dealing with travelers’ top concerns – filthy rooms, lack of service and safety issues

Nearly 70% of travelers who have tried renting both ways prefer the peace of mind that comes with renting from a professional manager over renting directly from an owner

The arrival of spring kicks summer vacation planning into high gear – for many that means finding a vacation rental. Before booking that dream vacation home, travelers need to think twice about who they rent from as it makes a big difference when it comes to safety, service and peace-of-mind according to a new survey from Wyndham Vacation Rentals.

Nearly 90 percent of do-it-yourself hosts secretly dread doing the things needed to deliver a great vacation experience – dealing with guests, handling inspections and cleaning the house. As a result, nearly 70 percent of travelers who have tried both would prefer to rent from a professional management company as opposed to an owner during their next stay.

Stranger Danger: Rental Guests Book with Caution

The private space and home-like amenities of vacation rentals have strong appeal - 89 percent of those who never tried a rental would consider doing so - but tales of vacation rentals gone bad when booking directly with a homeowner weigh on renters’ minds.

Unmet expectations. 62 percent of all vacationers worry about not being able to get problems solved quickly and nearly half (46 percent) are not confident that they’ll get what they anticipate when renting directly from an owner.
Unsafe rentals. Nearly half (45 percent) of all vacationers worry about the safety of an owner-managed property.
Guests want to vacation with confidence. Nearly half (49 percent) of all vacationers look for a name they can trust when booking accommodations.

“The survey underscores that travelers want to know their vacation is in the hands of someone they can trust,” said Gail Mandel, CEO, Wyndham Vacation Rentals. “Being a homeowner doesn’t necessarily make you qualified nor interested in running a bed and breakfast. The reality is most homeowners don’t have the time to adequately meet guest expectations when it comes to safety, cleanliness and assistance, and as a result they find the tasks daunting.”

Who You Rent From Matters

Nearly seven in 10 guests (68 percent) who have stayed in a professionally managed vacation rental and one managed by the owner prefer the managed option.

No Complaints. Virtually all guests (99 percent) who stayed in a professionally managed home had a positive experience during their last visit.
At Your Service. 95 percent of vacationers can think of at least one reason why they would choose to rent from a management company over the owner. Top reasons included the company resolving issues quickly and providing a 24/7 contact.
Peace of Mind. Nearly half of all vacationers would choose a professionally managed rental over owner-managed because it provides greater peace of mind.
Safety. Guests who have experience with both options are two and half times as likely to feel extremely confident in the safety of a home rented through a management company as opposed to one rented directly from the owner.

While peer-to-peer listings may dominate the headlines, professionally managed properties account for nearly half of all transactions annually in the U.S. In fact, many of today’s most popular vacation rental listings are peppered with professionally managed properties.

Unlike direct-from-homeowner rentals, vacation rental managers like Wyndham Vacation Rentals oversee the process from start to finish ensuring a great guest experience. Vacation rental managers have established standards for quality, service and security for their properties whereas peer-to-peer rentals leave the standards up to each individual homeowner.

Mandel adds, “Guests should know they do not have to go it alone. But if they do, they should keep in mind important tips, like renting from a reputable source, watching for signs of fraud and only using secure payment methods. If they have any hesitations at all, they should consider a professional manager who will keep their concerns top of mind.”

This study was conducted by Kelton Global from December 14, 2015 – January 5, 2016 among the following audiences: 1,000 nationally representative Americans 25+ who have ever traveled outside the home overnight, including 447 Americans who have experience being a rental guest in someone else’s vacation home and 561 Americans who own two or more homes and have ever rented out one of their homes to travelers (this group includes U.S. vacation rental homeowners who have a rental agreement with Wyndham Vacation Rentals and those who do not).

More Non-Skiers Heading to the Mountains, Finds Wyndham Vacation Rentals® Study

Study finds 10 percent increase from last year in number of non-skiers taking ski or snowboard vacations with family and friends

More non-skiers are visiting the slopes this ski season, and they’ve got opinions on where to stay. This year, nearly one in three non-skiers said they join their skiing and snowboarding friends and family on ski vacations, up from one in five last year. Eighty-two percent prefer to stay in a vacation rental when tagging along. These are among the findings of a recent study* of more than 9,000 skiers, snowboarders and non-skiers conducted by Wyndham Vacation Rentals, the world’s largest professional manager of vacation rental properties and part of the Wyndham Worldwide family of brands (NYSE: WYN).

The study shows each party tends to agree when it comes to lodging for a ski vacation, with 84 percent of both skiers and snowboarders also preferring vacation rentals. This preference has strengthened from last year when 77 percent of skiers and snowboarders reported a preference for vacation rentals.

“Vacation rentals can provide a lot of great benefits for all types of travelers,” said Mary Lynn Clark, president, Wyndham Vacation Rentals North America. “While a non-skier might appreciate being able to relax by the fire or read a book on the couch, skiers can benefit from fueling up after runs in the kitchen or having extra space for gear.”

Other findings show the reasons vacation rentals reign in ski country.
From the convenience of a kitchen to value, space and privacy, see where each type of traveler’s priorities lay when booking a vacation rental property for a ski vacation:

•  Skiers and snowboarders crave value. When rating the significance of vacation rental features, skiers and snowboarders place the most importance on value, perhaps to help offset the price of lift tickets or gear rentals. The kitchen remains the second most significant feature from last year’s results, possibly pointing to the cost-saving benefits it allows.

•  The larger the group, the more important a kitchen becomes. The appeal of having a kitchen grows as group size gets larger. 75% of groups of two or more find the kitchen very to extremely important, while that number reaches 88% for groups of six or more.

•  Non-skiers want their space and privacy. 75% of non-skiers find privacy very to extremely important, compared to 66% of skiers and snowboarders. When it comes to space, 73% of non-skiers find it very to extremely important, compared to 64% of skiers and snowboarders.

Vacation Rental Travelers Relax More, Finds Wyndham Vacation Rentals® Study

92 percent say they feel less stressed after returning from a vacation rental stay compared to other lodging options — and one amenity in particular makes a big difference

Vacation rental travelers know how to kick back. Cost savings, peace of mind and flexibility are among the reasons why 92 percent find vacation rental stays more relaxing than other lodging accommodations. These are among the findings of a recent study of more than 11,000 vacation rental travelers conducted by Wyndham Vacation Rentals, the world’s largest professional manager of vacation rental properties and part of the Wyndham Worldwide family of brands (NYSE: WYN).

The study shows the kitchen is a major stress reliever, with 94 percent of vacation rental travelers agreeing that having one on vacation reduced their stress level. Of those travelers, 73 percent attributed the lower stress to being able to save money. On average, vacation rental travelers report having saved $742 over the course of a week by preparing some meals in their rental. They tend to prepare an average of 12 meals during a week-long stay, including breakfast five times, lunch four times and dinner three times.

“With July marking National Vacation Rental Month, there’s no better time to look at why vacation rental travelers choose this way to vacation,” said Mary Lynn Clark, president, Wyndham Vacation Rentals North America. “While you might think you’d never cook on vacation, it can be a tremendous source of savings. That added value along with the extra space and flexibility a vacation rental offers can make for a more relaxed vacation experience.”

Other findings show the kitchen saves vacation rental travelers aggravation.
In addition to travel savings, vacation rental travelers cited a number of reasons why having a kitchen on vacation helps them relax. Of the 94% who agreed it alleviates stress, here’s why:

• Dining out can be stressful. 60% felt not having to get ready to go out to eat allowed for a more enjoyable experience. Similarly, 36% liked being able to avoid the wait times of restaurants and the stress of eating out.
• Diets and allergies are a concern. 59% appreciated having a kitchen because they were better able to cater to everyone’s diets and allergy restrictions and stick to preparing healthier meals.

Vacation companions matter, too.
Vacation rental travelers prioritize when it comes to choosing who to bring on vacation. When weighing companions from parents and friends to in-laws and extended family, priorities tend to vary based on gender and age:

• Women are less likely to bring their in-laws. Perhaps stacking the odds in their favor, women are more likely to want to take their own parents, extended family and friends on vacation before adding their in-laws to the list.
• Men are more likely to bring help. More appreciative of extra hands, men are more likely to want to bring the housekeeper and the babysitter on vacation.
• Older travelers want to bring their friends. Surprisingly, the older vacation rental travelers get, the more likely they are to want to take friends on vacation. Of those ages 25-34, 26% were most likely to want friends with them on vacation, compared to 29% of those ages 35-54, and 36% of those ages 55+.

Travelers Are Hitting the Road This Summer, Finds Wyndham Vacation Rentals® Study

Nearly 90 percent plan on taking a summer road trip – and the majority are willing to drive farther than you’d think

Vacation rental travelers are in it for the long haul. The nearly 90 percent who plan on hitting the road this summer will spend an average of 12.3 hours driving to their vacation destination. These are among the findings of a recent study* of more than 11,000 vacation rental travelers conducted by Wyndham Vacation Rentals, the world’s largest professional manager of vacation rental properties and part of the Wyndham Worldwide family of brands (NYSE: WYN).

As might be expected, the study also found that men tend to take the wheel on road trips. However, the actual disparity between genders is steep. Nearly four in five men (79%) say they drive on a road trip compared to just one in five women (23%). Perhaps more surprising, women are the more aggressive road trippers. They’re more likely to describe their driving style as “Pedal to the Metal” (49% vs. 41%) while men are more willing to take the “Long & Leisurely” route (29% vs. 21%).

“A travel tradition that may have once been seen as a means to an end actually holds much more reverence among vacation rental travelers today,” said Mary Lynn Clark, president, Wyndham Vacation Rentals North America. “They’re a unique group who often travel with larger parties and appreciate spending as much time as they can with each other, whether it’s on the road or vacationing together under one roof.”

Other findings show that food plays an important part in the road trip.
Vacation rental travelers can be very particular when it comes to snacks for the ride, even making unique and specific choices like egg and lobster sandwiches or summer sausage with squirt cheese. When it comes to choosing between food groups, here’s where they stand:

• They try to snack healthy in the car. When picking their favorite road trip snack or beverage, only 4% of vacation rental travelers cite fast food as their top choice. 26% prefer healthier options like nuts, seeds and trail mix.

• Where you live might affect your choice. Vacation rental travelers from the Pittsburgh, PA metro area have the biggest sweet tooth, while those near Cleveland-Akron, Ohio are more likely to crave something salty. Tampa-St. Pete, Florida and Denver, Colorado tie for the most health-minded vacation rental travelers, while those from Los Angeles, CA are most likely to be found in the drive-thru.

Surprisingly, most vacation rental travelers don’t really get annoyed by things like talking too much or playing “I-Spy.” However, when they start to get agitated, here’s what sets them off:

• Bad driving is their biggest complaint. Nearly half (49%) of vacation rental travelers agree that bad driving is far and away the most annoying road trip occurrence. 22% rank backseat driving their second biggest annoyance.

• Men and women clash on car-ride fun. Men are less appreciative of aspiring singers with 35% finding singing or humming moderately to extremely annoying compared to just 25% of women. Women are more likely to roll their eyes at steering wheel drumming with 26% finding it very to extremely annoying (compared to 18% of men).

Right lodging and plenty of activities make mountain experience just as fun for the one in five non-skiers that still take ski vacations

Non-skiers are headed to the mountains this season, and they’re ready for their own winter fun. One in five non-skiing travelers still take ski and snowboard vacations on occasion with family and friends who enjoy the sport, according to a recent study conducted by Wyndham Vacation Rentals, the world’s largest professional manager of vacation rentals and part of the Wyndham Worldwide family of brands (NYSE: WYN).

More and more U.S. ski resorts are enhancing the destination experience for skiers and non-skiers alike. Olympic gold-medalist and ski racer, Picabo Street, who has been on the mountains all her life, has seen the changes first-hand.

“One of the best things about ski resorts these days is the long list of activities they now offer,” said Street. “There’s fun for the whole family, whether it’s snowmobiling and mushing behind the dogs or a relaxing afternoon at the spa. If there’s a non-skier in the group, they can choose from a ton of attractions and enjoy the winter vacation experience just as much as those on the slopes.”

The Wyndham Vacation Rentals® study’s full findings are captured in the 2014-15 Ski Trends Research Report, which explores today’s ski and winter vacations. The findings reflect data collected from more than 11,000 travelers, including skiers, snowboarders, and non-skiers.

Non-Skiers Have Distinct Travel Preferences

They want to be dined. 90% of non-skiers find dining very to extremely appealing when taking a ski/snowboard vacation with family and friends.
They enjoy the snow, too. Non-skiers don’t avoid the snow. 57% find other outdoor activities like dog sledding, snowshoeing and snow tubing very to extremely appealing while on a ski/snowboard vacation.
They hit the town. Ski towns are a hot spot for non-skiers on vacation. They find the area’s arts and entertainment (68%) and shopping (64%) very to extremely appealing.
They’re ready to relax. Nearly twice as many non-skiers find an on-site spa very to extremely appealing compared to skiers and snowboarders (42% to 22%). Non-skiers also find a pool/hot tub more appealing (74% to 62%).
They crave comfort and convenience. Nearly twice as many non-skiers feel privacy is extremely important on a ski/snowboard vacation compared to skiers (44% vs. 23%). They also place more value on the extras that may be available with their vacation rental. 39% of non-skiers found concierge services very to extremely important compared to 24% of skiers.

Gearing up to plan a ski trip this winter or spring? Here are 10 fun facts about skiing in Park City while you stay with Wyndham Vacation Rentals:

1. Ski two resorts in one day—on one pass. Park City Mountain Resort (PCMR) and Canyons are only 7 miles apart, and both are on the Epic Pass™. Buy your pass or lift ticket and ski both resorts in one day, or switch off during your stay.

2. Don’t get overcrowded. During the busiest ski days, Deer Valley® Resort actually limits the number of tickets they sell to prevent congestion at lift lines. It’s still busy on the slopes, but lift wait times are typically shorter than other resorts on the busiest days.

3. Visit a ski-in/ski-out distillery. PCMR is the only U.S. resort with access to a ski-in/ski-out whiskey distillery. Take the Town Lift to High West Distillery and sample fine food and drinks from Utah’s own distillery. Then hop back on the lifts to finish up the day.

6. Kimball Junction is the new Old Town. Located just north of Downtown Park City and easily accessed from Salt Lake City, Kimball Junction is growing in popularity. Younger adult skiers and snowboarders want their friends by their side, a good deal in their pockets, and plenty of off-mountain entertainment. These are among the findings of a recent study of today’s ski and snowboard traveler conducted by Wyndham Vacation Rentals, the world’s largest professional manager of vacation rentals and part of the Wyndham Worldwide family of brands (NYSE: WYN).

The study’s full findings are captured in the Wyndham Vacation Rentals® 2014-15 Ski Trends Research Report, which explores today’s ski and winter vacations. The findings reflect data collected from more than 3,000 skiers and snowboarders.

“For the industry to cater to the evolving needs of ski and snowboard travelers, it’s important we get to know the next generation,” said Mary Lynn Clark, president, Wyndham Vacation Rentals North America. “By listening to their wants and needs in a ski vacation, we can hone our offerings and help deliver the well-rounded mountain experience they’re looking for.”

Next Generation Finds Ways to Enjoy a Better-Rounded Trip

They value promotions over tradition. 53% of younger travelers (ages 18-34) are most motivated by promotions when booking a ski or snowboard vacation compared to just 38% of mature travelers (ages 55 and up); meanwhile, mature travelers are more likely to be most motivated by tradition than younger travelers (24% to 14%).
They seek a shared experience. More younger travelers find recommendations from friends and family very to extremely important when planning a ski trip, as compared to mature travelers. They are also more likely to travel with friends (71% to 43%).
They want service and cuisine. Younger travelers place more value on amenities like on-site dining and concierge services. 44% of younger travelers find an on-site restaurant very to extremely important compared to 25% of mature travelers.
They don’t just ski. More younger travelers (60%) find other outdoor activities outside of skiing very to extremely important when choosing a ski destination to visit compared to mature travelers (48%).
They look for convenience. 59% of younger travelers find onsite equipment rentals extremely important on a ski/snowboard vacation vs. 42% of mature travelers.

Aspen, Colorado property completes significant upgrades and helps revive the Buttermilk Mountain base

Wyndham Vacation Rentals, the world’s largest professional manager of vacation rentals and part of the Wyndham Worldwide family of brands (NYSE: WYN), congratulates The Inn at Aspen on a multi-million dollar renovation funded by the property’s homeowners. The Inn at Aspen, with units professionally managed by Wyndham Vacation Rentals, began common area renovations in April 2014 to bring a fresh appearance and better guest experience to the ski-in/ski-out property at the base of Buttermilk Mountain. The renovation is slated to be completed in November for the 2014-2015 ski season.

The Inn undertook a grand renovation of the lobby and the adjacent bar and onsite restaurant to provide guests with a warm and welcoming gathering place. The enhancements include an expanded ceiling and new floor-to-ceiling windows that offer unobstructed mountain views. The lobby was also updated to include a four-sided fireplace, wood design elements, and leather seating for a comfortable après ski spot. In addition to housing the front desk, concierge and car rental counter, the renovated lobby also features a new business center and a grand entryway leading to a stone patio with a gas fire pit and an adjacent outdoor pavilion for dining and events.

These common area enhancements follow room renovations completed in 2013, which included brand new bathrooms, fresh décor, new carpeting and drapes, updated furnishings and select new appliances for most of the rooms.

The Inn at Aspen’s renovation comes alongside major improvements to Buttermilk Mountain, home of the famous ESPN Winter X Games. Aspen Skiing Company, the company that owns the mountain’s base, is redeveloping the area with improvements including a new kids’ center that will house a ski school and include play areas designed to feel like a kids’ hideout. There will also be a revamped parking lot, new bus and shuttle drop-off, and pedestrian plaza.

Domestic holiday giant Hoseasons today unveiled a new logo and brand messaging at the ABTA convention in Slovenia in response to the evolution in its product range and customer profile.

Following extensive research, the new look moves away from the seaside blue logo with seagull motif, to a softer countryside feel with new typo-graphic, colours and green ‘leaf’ icon.

As a member of the Wyndham Exchange & Rentals senior leadership team, Clark will be responsible for leading and growing the company’s North American rental businesses, which include such well-known brands as ResortQuest, Kaiser Realty and Oceana Resorts. Clark will be based in Parsippany, N.J. and report directly to the COO & CFO of Wyndham Exchange & Rentals, Gail Mandel.
